    Streaking Pitchers

    Friday, April 27

    HOT

Ramon Ortiz (Minnesota Twins) - Ortiz (3-1, 2.48 ERA) has been a wonderful surprise in the Twins rotation so far this season. Picked up on the cheap in the offseason, the veteran righty has gone at least seven innings in each of his four starts and has not allowed more than three runs in a game. He has been particularly efficient (averaging fewer than 13 pitches per inning) and hasn't reached 100 pitches yet in a start despite pitching late into games. He has earned backers 2.11 units and has the potential to increase his earnings as a +142 road dog today in Detroit.

Jason Marquis (Chicago Cubs) - Marquis takes the mound against his old club once again and would love to duplicate the success of his last outing, a 6-0 defeat of the Cardinals. Like Ortiz above, Marquis hasn't allowed more than three runs in any start this season but gives bettors an edge as a road underdog (+103). Including his time with the Atlanta Braves, he is 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA against St. Louis. He has dropped his ERA this season to a miniscule 1.88 entering tonight's matchup.

    COLD

Anthony Reyes (St. Louis Cardinals) - The luster of his World Series start has worn off quickly for Reyes. He has compiled an 0-3 record this season thanks in no small part to the Cardinals' bats, receiving a grand total of three runs of support in his three starts. His pitch counts have approached 100 in each start despite pitching into the sixth inning only once. Reyes is 0-3 for his career against the Cubs.

Chuck James (Atlanta Braves) - James began the season with style, winning his first two starts while allowing only one run in 11 innings. But the young lefty has come back down to earth after losing his last two starts in which he allowed nine runs. James has not pitched more than six innings this season and he sports a 9.00 career ERA against the Rockies.

Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) - The other side of today's Coors Field matchup is also struggling, especially at home. Francis has allowed 13 runs and 22 hits in his past two home starts and the Colorado hitters have not been able to keep pass. His ERA has ballooned to 6.46 and he has walked 10 batters on the season. With cold pitchers on both sides of today's game and the thin Denver air thrown into the mix, an over play may be worth while. The 10 1/2-run total is tied for the highest on the board, but the over is 6-2-1 in the last nine meetings between these two teams in Colorado and 11-4-2 overall.

Los Angeles Angels at Chicago White Sox: Pick White Sox -125

It’s been a tale of two cities for the Angels so far this season. The team is an impressive 11-3 at home, but just 1-7 on the road.

Making it even worse is the discrepancy between home and away for Angels starting pitcher Ervin Santana. Santana, who takes the mound today, is 21-5 with a 3.01 earned run average in 33 home starts. He is 9-13 with a 6.78 ERA in 27 starts away from Angels Stadium.

“I think you guys think too much about that,” Santana told the Los Angeles Times on Sunday. “I don’t worry about it. I just try to do my job, do my best and see how it goes.”

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees: Pick Red Sox +122

The New York Yankees pitching staff is a mess. Mike Mussina should return to the rotation next week, which is good news. But now manager Joe Torre has decided to put starter Kei Igawa in the bullpen after a shaky start to the year.

Igawa was scheduled to play Saturday, but Torre has elected to go with Jeff Karstens instead.

“I thought Karstens pitched a more controlled game the last time he pitched as opposed to Kei,” Torre told the New York Times. “Kei really struggled the other night. His stuff was fine, except he couldn’t command it.”

Boston isn’t hitting well against lefties (.253) but the Yankees bullpen is seriously overworked. Unless starter Andy Pettitte goes into the eighth inning, the Red Sox should be able to score some runs at the end of the game and come away with the win.

Atlanta Braves at Colorado Rockies: Pick Braves -118

The Braves have one of the best lineups in the National League and it starts at the top of the order. Leadoff hitter Kelly Johnson is making Braves fans quickly forget about former second baseman Marcus Giles.

Johnson is hitting .306 and has scored 19 runs. His high on-base percentage (.438) is one of the main reasons the Braves are one of the top teams in runs scored (107 in 22 games).

“Listen, when he was in our minor leagues, he was our No. 1-rated hitting prospect,” Atlanta manager Bobby Cox told the Associated Press. “He’s got a great set-up at the plate, stays on the ball, draws walks. His on-base percentage is No. 1. He’s doing a pretty good job of that right now.”

If Johnson continues to get on base today, Atlanta’s big bats should bring him in a few times.
