Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but................

    13) ESPN.com's Buster Olney must have written half a dozen articles last year, saying how the A's were going to trade the free agent-to-be, Barry Zito. Of course, this never happened, but now Olney is at it again, saying the A's should trade Rich Harden. Does the Bronx baseball team pay this guy's salary?

    12) Speaking of which, Suzyn Waldman, the worst analyst in the history of major league baseball (she does Bronx games on the radio) cracked me up last night. After Jason Giambi got thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double, play/play guy John Sterling asked Waldman if she thought that Giambi should have tried for second

Waldman tersely replied, "No, he's too slow." Sterling, never at a loss for words, almost got caught speechless. Waldman is probablly only analyst in country who doesn't do play-by-play, forcing Sterling do all nine innings of every game.

    11) I have Philip Hughes on my fantasy team, so watched his debut with certain amount of interest; the kid couldn't get a curve over, but you can tell he's going to be good, just not in 2007. He did strike out five guys in 4.1 IP, though.

    10) Jake Peavy has struck out 16 batters in game twice in his career, but Padres lost both games, 3-2/3-1.

    9) Can you believe NFL draft prospects don't have their eyes tested at the Combine? Isn't this information you would want, whether a kid can see or not? They give them every obscure test you can think of, but not eyesight. Brilliant!!!!

    8) Rams grabbed kick returner deluxe Dante Hall for a draft pick (5th round) this week; superior personnel move. Not too many kids taken in fifth round will have impact that a guy like Hall can have.

    7) Lookalikes: 2005 World Series of Poker champion Joseph Hachem and English actor Ian MacShane.

    6) Rarity in baseball Tuesday; both Seattle's Washburn and Oakland's Blanton threw complete games in the same game.

    5) The webbing of Devil Rays' 3B Akinori Iwamura's glove is made from alligator skin, because Iwamura read that there are lot of gators in Florida, so as a tribute, he had the glove made.

    4) Tampa Bay's Opening Day lineup, averaging 24.79 years of age, was youngest in major leagues since the '83 Twins.

    3) Lousy week for the Orioles, who went 0-4 at home, losing three close games, in addition to one of their broadcasters saying that Curt Schilling's bloody sock was fake. Bad week.

    2) Saint Louis is trying to hammer out deal with Rick Majerus to be its new basketball coach, which would make him, by far, the Billikens' highest-profile coach ever.

If I were athletic director, I couldn't hire Majerus as my hoop coach; the guy has health issues, and he is always wavering on whether he wants to coach or broadcast. I'd want a guy who is in with both feet, and thats not Majerus, even though he is a superior tactician.

    1) The perfect job for Majerus? Olympic coach; he could still broadcast, and he's smart enough that we'd start winning in these international tournaments again. His health wouldn't be as taxed, since it wouldn't take up as much time.

Nets led both games in Toronto at half, but Big 3 of Jefferson, Kiss, Carter combined to shoot 17-54 (31.5%) in Game 2 loss; in Game 1 win, Nets took 26 foul shots, 12 more than in next game. Raptors struggling on offense, shooting 41.3/40.8 in first two games, but they held Nets to just 83 points in win, after giving up 96 in Game 1.

Defending champ Heat down 0-2, after Bulls shot 55.1% from floor in Game 2 romp; two of three teams down 0-2 won Game 3 at home last night, we'll see how much Miami has in tank after pair of losses in Chicago, when they trailed by 3 at half in each game. Wade is playing hurt, but Wallace's defense is giving the Bulls added dimension they haven't had previously.

Golden State lost poise in Game 2, getting pair of guys tossed; they have avid fanbase eager for first playoff game in 13 years after Warriors split pair in Dallas. Golden State scored 97,99 in first two games, but Dallas scored 85, 112, shooting 48.7% from floor in Game 2, 35.3% in Game 1. Mavs were just 1-16 from arc in last game, still won going away.

              Friday, April 27

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baltimore Orioles at Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)
Baltimore starter Steve Trachsel has been solid at home this season, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.46 ERA in two starts. He picked up his first win last time out, throwing 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball in a 7-3 victory over Toronto. EDGE: ORIOLES
Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook is certainly a different animal at Jacobs Field than on the road. He's posted a 30-23 record and 4.09 ERA at home in 84 appearances. EDGE: INDIANS
The OVER is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings.

Florida Marlins at Philadelphia Phillies (7:05 PM ET)
Florida starter Anibal Sanchez certainly got roughed up in his only career start against Philadelphia, surrendering eight runs in 4 1/3 innings - issuing a career-high eight walks in the process. EDGE: PHILLIES
Phillies right-hander Freddy Garcia picked up his first victory of the season with a 9-3 win over Cincinnati on the road. He pitched the minimum in that contest, but he struggled in his only home start this season - giving up three runs and eight hits in just 4 2/3 innings against the Mets. SLIGHT EDGE: MARLINS
The OVER is 25-9 in the last 34 meetings in Philadelphia.

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (7:05 PM ET)
Twins starter Ramon Ortiz has pitched brilliantly in his first year with the Twins, going 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA in four starts so far. He's walked just two batters through 29 innings this season. EDGE: TWINS
Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander has come back strong from an impressive rookie campaign, posting a 1-0 record and 2.08 ERA in four starts this season. His lone win this year came in a 12-5 home victory against the Kansas City Royals two starts back. EDGE: TIGERS
The UNDER is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Detroit.

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (7:05 PM ET)
Boston starter Daisuke Matsuzaka surrendered a season-high six runs and eight hits in a 7-6 victory over the Yankees just five days ago. EDGE: OVER
Matsuzaka has had great success in striking out batters on the road, combining for 20 strikeouts in two starts. EDGE: RED SOX
New York starter Andy Pettitte has been dynamite in his career against the Red Sox. The left-hander is 13-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 24 appearances against them. EDGE: YANKEES
The Red Sox are 5-0 in the last five meetings.

Milwaukee Brewers at Houston Astros (8:05 PM ET)
Milwaukee starter Chris Capuano picked up his third victory of the year against the Astros last Saturday despite allowing four runs and issuing six walks in six innings of work. He's an even 3-3 with a 4.19 ERA in seven career starts against them. SLIGHT EDGE: BREWERS & OVER
Houston ace Roy Oswalt has thoroughly dominated the Brewers in his career with a 10-5 record and 2.67 ERA in 19 starts. He picked up a no-decision in his first start against the Brewers last time out, hurling 7 2/3 innings and allowing just a single run and five hits. BIG EDGE: ASTROS
The Astros are 6-0 in Oswalt's last six home starts versus the Brewers.

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (8:10 PM ET)
Cubs starter Jason Marquis pitched seven shutout innings against the Cardinals en route to a 6-0 win last Saturday. He's now 2-0 with a 1.20 ERA in four career games against his former team. Marquis might also be extra motivated here after former teammate Albert Pujols was quoted as saying he "gets lucky" in certain situations after the loss. EDGE: CUBS
St. Louis right-hander Anthony Reyes has suffered three straight losses to open the season, allowing 10 runs and 18 hits in 16 innings. EDGE: CUBS
The Cubs are 2-10 in their last 12 road games versus teams with a losing record.
The Cubs are 1-6 in the last seven meetings.

Los Angeles Angeles at Chicago White Sox (8:11 PM ET)
Los Angeles starter Ervin Santana has struggled mightily on the road in his career, and nothing has changed this season. He's 0-2 on the season and has given up 13 runs and 14 hits in just 8 1/3 innings. EDGE: WHITE SOX & OVER
White Sox right-hander Jon Garland has found the Angels to be an extremely difficult team to confront over his career, posting a dismal 2-6 record and 5.07 ERA against him. EDGE: ANGELS & OVER
The OVER is 9-4 in the last 13 meetings in Chicago.

San Francisco Giants at Arizona Diamondbacks (9:40 PM ET)
San Francisco's Barry Zito has been sensational over his past two starts, throwing 13 1/3 shutout innings in picking up his first two victories of the season. BIG EDGE: GIANTS & UNDER
Arizona starter Doug Davis is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in two home starts this season. He's been fighting control issues the entire season so far, issuing 14 free passes in 22 innings. SLIGHT EDGE: D-BACKS & OVER
The Giants are 11-5 in the last 16 meetings in Arizona.
The UNDER is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings.

#3 Toronto Raptors at #6 New Jersey Nets
                Game 3 - Friday, April 27th, 7 p.m. Eastern (ESPN2)

New Jersey's Vince Carter should be primed for a big game after two sub-par efforts to open the series in Toronto. Carter made just 13-of-43 shots (30 percent) in those games, and even the Raptors know he will be ready to go in Game 3. "I don't anticipate him shooting 8-for-24 again, but we said that last game, too," Toronto's Anthony Parker said. "He'll be at home and probably be a little more comfortable." BIG EDGE: NETS
The Raptors were an outstanding home team but were below average on the road, going 17-24 during the regular season. Meanwhile, the Nets won their last six home games against Eastern Conference opponents by an average of 12 points. EDGE: NETS
Both teams struggled with their shooting in Game 3, each making just 31-of-76 shots (41 percent). The Nets shot 46 percent at home during the regular season while Toronto allowed opponents to shoot over 47 percent on the road, which also favors the host. EDGE: NETS
UNDER is 12-3 in Toronto's last 14 vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
UNDER is 7-1 in New Jersey's last 8 vs. Atlantic Division opponents.
UNDER is 22-6 in the last 28 meetings.

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS (HOME team in CAPS)

Series tied 1-1 SU & ATS
                UNDER 2-0

                4/24/07 - Game 2: TORONTO 89, New Jersey 83 (ATS winner: Toronto -5.5 | UNDER 193.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The OVER in this game was virtually killed at the end of the first quarter with Toronto up 14-12. The Nets held an 83-82 lead with 46 seconds left and then Bostjan Nachbar missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left that would have tied it. Anthony Parker then sealed the deal for the Ratpors and their backers by making three straight free throws to earn a win and cover, tying up the series at a game apiece.

                4/21/07 - Game 1: New Jersey 96, TORONTO 91 (ATS winner: New Jersey +4.5 | UNDER 194)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Nets came out firing on all cylinders and took advantage of some first-half foul trouble by Toronto's Chris Bosh. Experience definitely looked to be the difference early on as New Jersey built a 51-41 halftime lead. T.J. Ford kept the Raptors in the game with 21 points and then backup Jose Calderon ignited a 17-5 run to open the fourth quarter and pull Toronto within 84-83. However, former Raptor Vince Carter overcame a poor 5-for-19 shooting day by making some key free throws down the stretch as the Nets held off the home team.

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Series tied 2-2 SU & ATS
                UNDER 3-1

                2/14/07 - TORONTO 120, New Jersey 109 (ATS winner: Toronto -9.5 | OVER 190)
                1/9/07 - NEW JERSEY 101, Toronto 86 (ATS winner: New Jersey -3.5 | UNDER 194.5)
                12/15/06 - TORONTO 90, New Jersey 78 (ATS winner: Toronto +2.5 | UNDER 193)
                11/1/06 - NEW JERSEY 102, Toronto 92 (ATS winner: New Jersey -7 | UNDER 202)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: This could very well be the best matchup in the first round since each team won two home games en route to splitting the season series. Both meetings in Toronto had players missing for each team, as Chris Bosh missed the first meeting there and Richard Jefferson and Jason Kidd sat out the second. The key could very well be former Raptor Vince Carter, who is a free agent at the end of the year and would love nothing more than to stick it to his former team. However, Carter averaged just 14.5 points in Toronto this season on poor 28 percent shooting. Bosh gives the Raptors a serious advantage inside though and could have a coming-out party in his first playoffs similar to Amare Stoudemire a couple years ago.

                -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#5 Chicago Bulls at #4 Miami Heat
                Game 3 - Friday, April 27th, 8 p.m. Eastern (ESPN)

Experts believe Miami center Shaquille O'Neal will be a much bigger factor at home than he was in the first two games at Chicago. O'Neal fouled out in Game 1 and had a relatively quiet 17 points and eight rebounds in Game 2. "I have been around a long time and I've been in all these situations before," O'Neal said. "Basically, the Bulls did what they're supposed to do and protect their home court. We have to play smarter basketball. We got to come with a lot more energy and play with a lot more effort and a lot more passion." EDGE: HEAT
The Bulls went 3-2-1 ATS against the Heat in last year's first-round playoff series, as Miami failed to cover its first two home games. The difference of course was that the Heat opened up a 2-0 lead in that series and were not faced with an 0-2 deficit. Insiders expect Miami to be much more aggressive offensively in Game 3 with the team's back against the wall. Look for 2006 NBA Finals MVP Dwyane Wade to come through with his best performance of the series, which should include more than the six trips he took to the free-throw line in Game 2. EDGE: HEAT
Chicago is 7-2-1 ATS in its last 10 games.
Chicago is 9-4-2 ATS in the last 15 meetings with Miami.
Miami is 1-9-1 ATS in its last 11 games.
OVER is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings in Miami.

                4/24/07 - Game 2: CHICAGO 107, Miami 89 (ATS winner: Chicago -3.5 | OVER 183.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Bulls used the 3-point shot to bail them out whenever they got into trouble - hitting 11-of-17 from beyond the arc - while Luol Deng again came up big when they needed him the most. Deng followed up a career-best playoff effort in Game 1 by scoring 26 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Ben Gordon led Chicago with 27 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Miami was challenged defensively by head coach Pat Rliey before Game 2 and remains defensively-challenged.

                4/21/07 - Game 1: CHICAGO 96, Miami 91 (ATS winner: PUSH -5 | OVER 182.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Heat got off to a strong start in Game 1 behind 10 first-quarter points from Shaquille O'Neal, who scored just nine the rest of the way as he battled foul trouble throughout. O'Neal and Dwyane Wade both headed to the bench just 3 1/2 minutes into the fourth quarter with five fouls apiece, but the Heat still rallied back to pull within 92-91 with 38 seconds left. That comeback came despite O'Neal fouling out, and Chicago's Ben Gordon nailed some late free throws to force the push.

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Chicago wins 3-1 SU (2-2 ATS)
                OVER/UNDER 2-2

                3/7/07 - MIAMI 103, Chicago 70 (ATS winner: Miami +1 | UNDER 184)
                1/27/07 - CHICAGO 100, Miami 97 (ATS winner: Miami +7 | OVER 191.5)
                12/27/06 - CHICAGO 109, Miami 103 (ATS winner: Chicago -5.5 | OVER 192.5)
                10/31/06 - Chicago 108, MIAMI 66 (ATS winner: Chicago +4.5 | UNDER 187)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Both games in Miami were blowouts, with Chicago spoiling the Heat's ring ceremony by handing a defending NBA champion its worst season-opening loss ever. Miami then returned the favor in the last meeting despite playing without Dwyane Wade. The two meetings in Chicago saw Ben Gordon score a combined 74 points and show just what a difference maker he can be. Gordon totaled just 14 points in the last meeting and needs to be a major factor offensively in order for the Bulls to have any shot at dethroning the champs. Meanwhile, Wade averages just 17.3 points per game lifetime vs. Chicago, and whether or not he can be as aggressive against Kirk Hinrich this time around will be the key to Miami's chances after his return from a serious shoulder injury.

#1 Dallas Mavericks at #8 Golden State Warriors
                Game 3 - Friday, April 27th, 9:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Golden State's Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson need to simply keep their cool in order for their team to have a good chance to pull off another upset. Jackson is infamous for his temper and can't afford to get into trouble in Game 3 or else he might face a suspension. Davis is the team's heart and soul and was clearly the difference in the Game 1 victory. Playing in front of the home fans should help both players stay in line and perform to the best of their abilities. EDGE: WARRIORS
The Warriors were one of the best home teams in the NBA during the regular season, going 30-11 SU and 25-16 ATS. They average nearly four more points per game there and will be hosting their first home playoff game since 1994. They are also an outstanding 23-14-1 ATS when playing on one day of rest. BIG EDGE: WARRIORS
The Mavericks continue to have trouble with Golden State's smaller, quicker lineup, as they have failed to take advantage of a signifcant edge inside. Erick Dampier started at center and had just two points and two rebounds while star 7-footer Dirk Nowitzki has made just 11-of-31 shots (35 percent). The Warriors have played 6-9 Al Harrington at center, and he has made only 4-of-22 (18 percent) of his shots and totaling 12 points in the first two games combined. Nowitzki is due for a big game and will need to have one here if the Mavs are to win. SLIGHT EDGE: MAVS
Golden State is 18-6-2 ATS in its last 26 meetings.
UNDER is 8-3 in Dallas' last 11 games.
OVER is 16-5 in the last 21 meetings.

                4/25/07 - Game 2: DALLAS 112, Golden State 99 (ATS winner: Dallas -9.5 | OVER 210)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: The Mavs weren't able to pull away in this one until the Warriors were without starters Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson, who were both ejected late in the game. Davis was assessed his second technical at the end of the third quarter and tossed for arguing with an official while Jackson was booted with 4:34 left in the game. Golden State again played Dallas tough, leading by two at the end of the first quarter and trailing by two at halftime. The game was fast-paced in the first and third quarters and did not go OVER the total until Kelenna Azubuike made two free throws with eight seconds left. Azubuike helped the Warriors go on a 7-0 run to end the game, but it wasn't enough to cover the spread.

                4/22/07 - Game 1: Golden State 97, DALLAS 85 (ATS winner: Golden State +10.5 | UNDER 213.5)
                Recap | Boxscore
SUMMARY: Golden State held Dallas to just 17 points in the first quarter and held MVP candidate Dirk Nowitzki to one of his worst playoff games ever to fuel a low-scoring yet dominant victory. Nowitzki totaled just 14 points on 4-of-16 shooting, and the Mavs shot just 35 percent as a team. Dallas did rally to tie the game at halftime by holding the Warriors to 15 points in the second quarter, but Golden State's Baron Davis scored 19 of his game-high 33 points in the third to re-establish the lead. Another sub 20-point quarter in the fourth ensured the total would go UNDER and secured a Warriors win.

                REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Golden State wins 3-0 SU & ATS
                OVER 3-1

                4/17/07 - GOLDEN STATE 111, Dallas 82 (ATS winner: GS -10 | UNDER 215)
                3/12/07 - GOLDEN STATE 117, Dallas 100 (ATS winner: GS +7.5 | OVER 206)
                11/6/06 - Golden State 107, DALLAS 104 (ATS winner: GS +9.5 | OVER 197)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Not to make excuses for the league's best team during the regular season, but the first meeting came during a four-game losing streak to start the 2006-07 campaign. The Mavs then proceeded to win 12 straight games after that loss and went on a 61-8 run, including a 17-game winning streak that was snapped by Golden State. The final meeting was meaningless for Dallas and very meaningful for the the Warriors, who needed to win to hold off the Clippers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Needless to say, Dallas will have no excuses here and will need to show up against a hungry but inexperienced Golden State team that is making its first playoff appearance since 1994.

The Brewers look like a good underdog pick (+160) according to Dunkel, which has Milwaukee favored straight up by 2 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Milwaukee (+160). Here are all of today's games.

                            Dallas at Golden State
Golden State's meltdown that included the ejections of Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson shouldn't overshadow a productive start to the series that saw the eighth seed steal Game One in Dallas. Now the attention turns to Oracle Arena for Game Three where the Warriors were 30-11 straight up during the regular season and and even better 35-6 against the spread. And Don Nelson's team still has the confidence in knowing they've beaten the Mavericks in six of the last seven. Golden State looks like a good underdog pick (+4 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Warriors favored straight up by 2. Dunkel Pick: Golden State (+4 1/2). NY Rangers at Buffalo
The Rangers were thoroughly outplayed in a Game One loss (5-2) and may have suffered from overconfidence after sweeping Atlanta. Four penalties in the first period and six through the first two didn't help as the Sabres' attack wore down the New York defense. The five goals given up by the Rangers were one shy of the total given up in the entire Atlanta series. But while the loss put a halt to the Rangers' run, it doesn't erase the fact that New York remains a dangerous team that went 17-3-4 in its previous 24 games. New York looks like a good underdog pick in Game Two according to Dunkel, which has the Rangers favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: NY Rangers (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
