    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago White Sox at Detroit Tigers (1:05 PM ET)
The White Sox dropped three straight before its current winning streak, scoring a combined two runs in those three games and batting .184. During the four consecutive wins, Chicago is averaging six runs. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Chicago starter Jon Garland is 12-6 with a 4.32 ERA in 22 starts against the Tigers. EDGE: WHITE SOX
Detroit starter Justin Verlander is 1-4 with a 7.82 ERA in five starts against the White Sox. Chicago designated-hitter Jim Thome is 6-for-12 with four homers and five RBIs against the right-hander. EDGE: WHITE SOX
The Tigers are 10-3 in Verlander's last 13 home games.

Atlanta Braves at New York Mets (1:10 PM ET)
Braves starter John Smoltz is 2-0 after Atlanta losses this season and will have a chance to give the Braves two straight series wins over the Mets for the first time since 2005. EDGE: BRAVES
New York starter Tom Glavine is 0-1 with a 2.19 ERA in his two starts against former teammate Smoltz, but he is 3-10 with a 5.55 ERA in 16 outings against the Braves overall. SLIGHT EDGE: BRAVES & OVER
A strong Mets lineup will try to break Smoltz's run of success against Glavine. New York has scored seven runs or more seven times this season, including twice against Atlanta. EDGE: METS & OVER
The Mets are 12-3 in Glavine's last 15 starts versus a team with a winning record.

Philadelphia Phillies at Cincinnati Reds (1:15 PM ET)
The Phillies will try to win consecutive games and a series for the first time in 2007 as they complete this three-game set. SLIGHT EDGE: REDS
Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel expects to have slugger Ryan Howard back in the lineup, after missing three games with a leg injury. EDGE: PHILLIES
Reds third baseman Edwin Encarnacion is hitting just .182 this season, but he picked up his first multi-hit game since April 7 on Saturday. SLIGHT EDGE: REDS
Phillies starter Freddy Garcia won both starts against the Reds while pitching in interleague games for Seattle and Chicago. He has limited Cincinnati to four runs and 10 hits in 16 innings. EDGE: PHILLIES
The Reds are 4-0 in Belisle's last four home starts.

Houston Astros at Milwaukee Brewers (2:05 PM ET)
Unlike last season when the Astros struggled to produce runs consistently behind starter Roy Oswalt, they have scored 20 runs in his last three starts. EDGE: ASTROS & OVER
Oswalt is 11-6 with a 3.39 ERA in 20 starts against Milwaukee, including two wins in 2006. EDGE: ASTROS
Milwaukee's J.J. Hardy went 2-for-3 with two homers and three RBIs on Saturday, giving him four homers and eight RBIs in his last three games. EDGE: BREWERS
Brewers starter Dave Bush has been solid against Houston, going 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA in four career starts against them. EDGE: BREWERS
The Astros are 7-0 in Oswalt's last seven road starts.
The Brewers are 5-0 in Bush's last five starts as a home underdog.

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs (2:20 PM ET)
The Cubs were an NL-worst 36-45 at home last year, but were 8-2 against the Cardinals at Wrigley and bounced back Saturday after losing 2-1 in Friday's series opener. SLIGHT EDGE: CUBS
Chicago starter Wade Miller is 8-6 with a 3.74 ERA against the Cardinals, but hasn't faced them since 2004. He was 1-3 with a 5.91 ERA against St. Louis while with Houston. SLIGHT EDGE: CARDINALS
The Cardinals have scored a major-league low 50 runs and just 12 in their last six contests. EDGE: UNDER
The OVER is 22-8-1 in the Cardinals' last 31 Sunday games.

Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants (4:05 PM ET)
The Giants have improved nicely after a slow start. They have won four straight games and seven of their last nine to reach .500 at 8-8 after a 1-6 start. EDGE: GIANTS
San Francisco starter Matt Cain has allowed only four runs and eight hits while striking out 17 batters, but he has received just six runs of support in 20 innings. EDGE: GIANTS & UNDER
Arizona starter Yusmeiro Petit was 1-1 witth a 9.57 ERA in one start and 15 overall appearances wwith the Florida Marlins in 2006. EDGE: GIANTS & OVER
The OVER is 5-0 in Cain's last five starts versus the Diamondbacks.

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (ESPN | 8:05 PM ET)
After a disastrous home record against the New York Yankees last season, the Boston Red Sox are on the verge of their first sweep over their archrivals at Fenway Park in more than 16 years. SLIGHT EDGE: YANKEES

#7 Washington Wizards at #2 Cleveland Cavaliers
      Game 1 - Sunday, April 22nd, 7 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The Wizards stumbled down the stretch without two of their top three scorers, dropping eight of their last 10 SU and going 4-5-1 ATS. It's doubtful that they will be able to win a game in this series, but they may be able to stay within double digits. In those eight losses, the margin of victory for their opponents was more than eight points twice. Still, Washington will sorely miss the 47.6 points of offense generated by injured All-Stars Gilbert Arenas and Caron Butler. BIG EDGE: CAVS
Insiders believe Washington's best chance is to slow down the pace of the game. Chicago is the only team to score more than 96 points in the Wizards' last six games. The total went UNDER in all of those games along with eight of the team's last nine. EDGE: UNDER
Cleveland is 12-5 ATS in its last 17 home games.
Washington is 6-2-1 ATS in its last nine vs. Central Division opponents.
UNDER is 10-2 in Cleveland's last 12 games vs. Southeast Division opponents.

      REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Cleveland wins 2-1 SU (Washington 2-0-1 ATS)
      UNDER 2-1

      4/6/07 - Cleveland 99, WASHINGTON 94 (ATS winner: PUSH +5 | UNDER 197.5)
      11/18/06 - WASHINGTON 111, Cleveland 99 (ATS winner: Wash -4 | OVER 196.5)
      11/1/06 - CLEVELAND 97, Washington 94 (ATS winner: Wash +6 | UNDER 194)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: This is a very tough spot for the Wizards, who are severely depleted offensively without All-Stars Caron Butler and Gilbert Arenas. The duo averaged a combined 47.6 points per game, and Arenas scored a game-high 45 points in Washington's only win over the Cavs this season. Antawn Jamison will be counted on as the main offensive option and averaged 21 points against Cleveland in three games. LeBron James averaged nearly 24 points for the Cavs in the season series, and he will likely be too much for the Wizards to handle in what should be a clean sweep.

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#7 Los Angeles Lakers at #2 Phoenix Suns
      Game 1 - Sunday, April 22nd, 3 p.m. Eastern (ABC)

The Lakers were just 2-12 SU down the stretch when NBA scoring champion Kobe Bryant scored 40 points or less. They also lost the last three times he scored 50 or more, proving this team could be in big trouble here against a very balanced Phoenix team. LA dropped eight of 12 down the stretch, including two losses to the Suns. BIG EDGE: SUNS
LA is especially weak inside, where the Suns can take advantage with Amare Stoudemire and Shawn Marion. Stoudemire did not play in last year's first-round playoff matchup and averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds in the three wins during the regular-season series after sitting out the season opener. BIG EDGE: SUNS
LA Lakers are 5-16-1 ATS in their last 22 games.
Phoenix is 6-2 ATS in its last 8 games.
UNDER is 8-3 in Phoenix's last 11 home games.
UNDER is 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Phoenix.

      REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Phoenix wins 3-1 SU (Lakers 3-1 ATS)
      OVER/UNDER 2-2

      4/13/07 - PHOENIX 93, LA Lakers 85 (ATS winner: LAL +9.5 | UNDER 220.5)
      4/8/07 - Phoenix 115, LA LAKERS 107 (ATS winner: Pho -4.5 | OVER 218)
      3/4/07 - PHOENIX 99, LA Lakers 94 (ATS winner: LAL +10 | UNDER 219.5)
      10/31/06 - LA LAKERS 114, Phoenix 106 (ATS winner: LAL +5 | OVER 209.5)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The Suns sent a message to the Lakers by winning the last three meetings after losing the season opener at LA, 114-106. That lone setback in the season series came during a 1-5 start for Phoenix, and Kobe Bryant did not even play in that game. Lamar Odom scored a game-high 34 points in the victory while Bryant averaged 27.3 points in the other three meetings on 26.3 shots per game. Bryant and the Lakers still seem to be haunted by their collapse in last year's first-round series against the Suns, when they blew a 3-1 lead and saw him score just 1 point in the second half of Phoenix's Game 7 rout.

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#6 Denver Nuggets at #3 San Antonio Spurs
      Game 1 - Sunday, April 22nd, 7 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

The much-hyped pairing of Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson did not really pan out until the end of the season when the Nuggets won 10 of 11. Insiders believe this is the worst possible matchup for the prolific pair since San Antonio had the best scoring defense in the NBA this season, allowing just 90.1 points per game. BIG EDGE: SPURS
Experts see a very focused San Antonio team going into the playoffs following a strange wake-up call at Dallas last Sunday. Tim Duncan seems to be using that loss as motivation to make an early statement after getting ejected in the third quarter for laughing on the bench. Referee Joey Crawford was suspended indefinitely by NBA commisioner David Stern on Tuesday for his actions, and now the Spurs are on a mission to prove nothing can stop them. EDGE: SPURS
The Spurs dropped their last three games both SU & ATS after winning 12 of 13 (9-4 ATS).
The Nuggets finished the season on a 10-1 run SU, going 8-3 ATS in those games.
UNDER is 19-7-1 in the last 27 meetings between the teams, including 7-1 in the last 8 at San Antonio.

      REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

San Antonio wins 2-1 SU & ATS
      UNDER 3-0

      4/18/07 - Denver 100, SAN ANTONIO 77 (ATS winner: Denver +5 | UNDER 194.5)
      2/20/07 - SAN ANTONIO 95, Denver 80 (ATS winner: San Antonio -7 | UNDER 202)
      1/10/07 - San Antonio 92, DENVER 83 (ATS winner: San Antonio -5 | UNDER 200)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: The only regular-season meeting when both teams were at full strength came on February 20th. Denver's duo of Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson had a rough shooting night, making a combined 9-of-26 shots and totaling 24 points between them as the Spurs returned home for the first time in more than three weeks. San Antonio outscored the Nuggets 30-10 in the third quarter to take a 31-point lead into the fourth quarter. Neither team played their starters in the season finale, and Anthony missed the first meeting due to his highly-publicized suspension for fighting at Madison Square Garden. Denver averaged 108.5 points in winning 10 of 11 to close out the regular season, but whether or not this team can play with discipline against the defensive-minded Spurs remains to be seen.

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

#8 Golden State Warriors at #1 Dallas Mavericks
      Game 1 - Sunday, April 22nd, 9:30 p.m. Eastern (TNT)

Dallas won a franchise-best 67 games this season, and only team with as many wins did not win the NBA title - the 1972-73 Boston Celtics, who went 68-14. The Mavs have a monster edge in postseason experience after last year's appearance in the NBA Finals, going to the playoffs each of the past seven seasons. BIG EDGE: MAVS
Golden State has a strong advantage in the backcourt with big guards Jason Richardson (6-foot-6) and Baron Davis (6-3). Dallas had trouble with Dwyane Wade in the NBA Finals last season and could have trouble matching up. SLIGHT EDGE: WARRIORS
The Warriors have won the last five meetings with the Mavs both SU & ATS, and head coach Don Nelson is obviously very familiar with his former team. Nelson runs a similar high-scoring offense, as his Golden State team has averaged more than 117 points per game since March 29 in winning nine of 10 down the stretch. EDGE: WARRIORS & OVER
Golden State is 7-1 ATS in its last 8 road games.
Golden State is 17-5-2 ATS in its last 24 meetings.
Dallas is 2-6 ATS in its last 8 home games.
OVER is 11-2 in Golden State's last 13 games.
OVER is 10-2 in last 12 meetings between the teams.
UNDER is 7-2 in Dallas' last 9 games.

      REGULAR-SEASON RESULTS

Golden State wins 3-0 SU & ATS
      OVER 3-1

      4/17/07 - GOLDEN STATE 111, Dallas 82 (ATS winner: GS -10 | UNDER 215)
      3/12/07 - GOLDEN STATE 117, Dallas 100 (ATS winner: GS +7.5 | OVER 206)
      11/6/06 - Golden State 107, DALLAS 104 (ATS winner: GS +9.5 | OVER 197)

REGULAR-SEASON SERIES RECAP: Not to make excuses for the league's best team during the regular season, but the first meeting came during a four-game losing streak to start the 2006-07 campaign. The Mavs then proceeded to win 12 straight games after that loss and went on a 61-8 run, including a 17-game winning streak that was snapped by Golden State. The final meeting was meaningless for Dallas and very meaningful for the the Warriors, who needed to win to hold off the Clippers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Needless to say, Dallas will have no excuses here and will need to show up against a hungry but inexperienced Golden State team that is making its first playoff appearance since 1994.

New Jersey Devils at Tampa Bay Lightning (NBC | 1 PM ET)
After giving up three goals in each of the first four games, Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur made 31 saves on Friday night to shut out the Lightning and push Tampa Bay to the brink of elimination. SLIGHT EDGE: DEVILS & UNDER
Tampa Bay stars Vincent Lecavalier and Martin St. Louis have scored eight of the Lightning's 12 goals in this series. EDGE: LIGHTNING
The Lightning are 21-7 in their last 28 games playing on one days rest.

Detroit Red Wings at Calgary Flames (9 PM ET)
The home team has won each game in this Western Conference quarterfinal series. EDGE: FLAMES
Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff has played better at home so far this postseason, stopping 61 of 65 shots for a 2.00 GAA. EDGE: FLAMES
The Red Wings are 1-6 in their last seven games playing on zero days rest.
The home team is 8-0 in the last eight meetings.

Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles

The Toronto Blue Jays are sorely missing closer B.J. Ryan. The Jays’ bullpen blew another lead on Friday night and helped push the team’s losing streak to three games.

“If we jump ship on ‘em every time you have the young kids struggling, you have no damn team,” Jays manager John Gibbons told the Toronto Star after the 5-4 loss. “We’ve been in every game this year …. We’re in a position to win, it’s just not happening.”

It shouldn’t happen today either. Starter Gustavo Chacin rarely goes past five or six innings, meaning Toronto’s bullpen should be a large factor again today.

Also, outfielder Jay Payton is healthy and should start to see some time in left field. Payton was signed in the offseason but started the year on the disabled list because of a hamstring injury.

          Pick: Orioles +104

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs just can’t seem to get any clutch hits these days. Before Saturday’s game, the Cubs were hitting only .182 with runners in scoring position.

“I keep waiting for this thing to break out,” Cubs manager Lou Piniella told the Chicago Sun-Times. “It’s been a bit of a struggle early.”

Things probably won’t get any better for the Cubs until leadoff hitter Alfonso Soriano returns from a strained hamstring injury.

The St. Louis Cardinals have been a great road bet so far this season. Six of the club’s seven wins have come on the road.

          Pick: Cardinals -131

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels do not have an offense without Vladimir Guerrero. In the two games Guerrero missed after getting hit by a Josh Beckett pitch, the Angels scored just one run and only three extra base hits.

All that changed Friday night when Guerrero returned to the lineup and his team scored eight runs. Guerrero had three hits including a home run.

“Vlad comes to play every night and we all know what he can do,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia told the Los Angeles Daily News. “He’s extremely talented and he works hard. And I’ve never seen a guy swing the bat as hard as he does and still be able to square up the ball like he does. He’s in a special class.”

Guerrero still doesn’t have much protection in the batting order, but the Angels should be able to help him out today with Jeff Weaver starting the game for the Seattle Mariners.

          Pick: Angels -145

                    Denver at San Antonio
The Allen Iverson-Carmelo Anthony combination jelled down the stretch as the Nuggets went a franchise-best 10-1 in April. They also played well on the road with a 22-19 season record straight up, including winning six of their last seven, and an even better 25-15-1 against the spread. San Antonio lost only 10 games straight up at home (31-10), but dropped down to a less impressive 21-20 ATS at AT&T Center. Against a hot Nuggets team, the Spurs should have trouble covering the Vegas line (-8 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has San Antonio favored by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Denver (+8 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                          Sunday, April 22

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          Hot pitchers

Ramon Ortiz (Minnesota Twins) – New addition Ortiz has been a blessing for the pitching-strapped Twins. A return to the American League has seen Ortiz explode out of the gates with a perfect 3-0 start and 2.05 ERA. Oddsmakers have tagged Minnesota as underdogs in two Ortiz’s three starts but have them favored at -145 on the road at Kansas City.

Tom Gorzelanny (Pittsburgh Pirates) – The Pirates’ starting pitching staff is one of the biggest surprises of the young season and Gorzelanny is a big reason why. The young lefty has shown the ability to shut down top-notch teams away from home with road win over Houston and St. Louis. Pittsburgh travels to Dodgertown as +121 underdogs to take on an L.A. squad that hits .261 against southpaws.

Gustavo Chacin (Toronto Blue Jays) – Chacin is coming off one of the best starts of his career, out-dueling Daisuke Matsuzaka in a 2-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. Toronto will need a similar effort from Chacin if they are to snap their current four-game losing streak. The Jays (-108), are favored on the road in Baltimore against the Orioles who only have only three homers against left handed pitching in 2007.

                          Cold pitchers

Jeff Weaver (Seattle Mariners) – Seattle’s big free agent signing is turning out to be a big bust. So far this season Weaver is robbing the Mariners by earning slightly over $1.3 million per inning pitched. An inability to get hitters out has led to a whopping 15.75 ERA and only eight innings in two starts for the 2006 playoff hero. Oddsmakers have Seattle listed as +137 underdogs as they visit the Angels in Anaheim.

Jake Westbrook (Cleveland Indians) – Cleveland re-signed Westbrook to a 3-year, $33 million contract extension and then saw him promptly get blasted for eight runs in 1.2 innings against the Yankees on Tuesday. Overall the former 15-game winner is 0-2 in three starts this season with an inflated 12.08 ERA. The good news? Cleveland (-111) is playing against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday.
