    Six-Pack for Tuesday

-- Zack Grienke threw 49 pitches in his start Monday, but he didn't escape first inning, as Tigers scored four runs. Don't think I've ever seen a pitcher throw 49 pitches in one inning.

-- Alfonso Soriano strained of his expensive hamstrings on Monday, so Cubs' 12-4 win was indeed a costly one.

-- Red Sox outscored Angels 25-3 in their three-game series.

-- By fifth inning Monday, Rocco Baldelli had been on base four times, and had only hit one fair ball, an infield hit. He walked three times and got hit by a pitch.

-- Of course, Tampa's bullpen imploded, blowing 7-5 lead in a 9-7 loss. Rays led 7-1 at one point, but no lead is safe.

-- Brad Penny is 3-0, 0.88 in his first three starts this year.

Tuesday's list of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) They had 7.6 inches of rain in New York City Sunday, the second-largest rainfall in recorded weather history.

      12) Golfer Boo Weekley had to be named after an Eagles' fan, no? Boo got his first win Monday; he was 39th on money list before this, now he's one of 2007's rising stars.

      11) Weekley attended college at that sports factory, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. Don't think they have much of a football team there, but they probably have a nice field.

      10) Joe Torre was apparently looking forward to keeping the #42 jersey he wore Sunday, but was told all the jerseys were being auctioned off. Carl Crawford wore a different jersey in all nine innings, so they're auctioning off all nine of those.

      9) If you had never seen a picture of Barry Trotz, Nashville Predators' coach, then you saw him, you'd nod your head and say, "Yup, thats what a guy named Trotz should look like."

      8) San Jose Sharks were first team in NHLplayoffs to win their game when they trailed after one period.

      7) Islanders have now lost their last five home playoff games.

      6) Caught some of South Carolina's spring football game on TV; just as they were saying how Gamecocks had hired a new special teams coach, the long snapper sails ball over punter's head, so it looks like the new coach has some work to do.

      5) Hawai'i chose assistant Bob Nash as its new head coach, a move that could have been done last fall, but no, they had to go through 71 applicants before realizing the best candidate (other than me) was right under their nose.

      4) I mean, who wouldn't love to be hoop coach at Hawaii'i? I could see myself laying by the pool before practice, going to pick up recruits at the airport with my Hawaiian shirt on. Has to be one of the best jobs in America.

As long as you win, of course. Winning solves everything.

      3) Henry Bibby was one of the finalists for the Hawai'i job, by the way. Bibby used to coach at USC and in the CBA, when the CBA was loaded with excellent coaches.

      2) Only on Arizona Diamondback telecasts does the analyst put his 6-year old kid on air in between innings. Mark Grace is fun to listen to; he even picks football games late in season.

      1) Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone at Virginia Tech after the most horrible of days. You never know in this world what is going to happen from one day to the next; we are guaranteed nothing, yet another reminder to live while we can, because it can end at any minute.

I think Larry Hughes cashes a $2M bonus if Cleveland wins to get to 49 wins for season, so you figure they'll try here, even if playoffs do start over weekend. Cavs are 1-7 vs spread in game after their last eight wins; their last five games stayed under the total. 76ers are 24-17 since trading Iverson.

Indiana split its last eight games; they drilled Atlanta 113-90 in last meeting, March 11 (-5.5); seven of their last eight contests went over the total. Hawks lost last three games, by 13,34 and 6 points; they're 2-11 in their last thirteen games, losing last night by 6 in Milwaukee.

Orlando clinched a playoff spot; they're 4-1 in last five games, but they lost 114-93 at home in last meeting vs Washington, in game when Wizards were healthy; seven of their last ten Magic games went over total, but six of last seven Wiz games stayed under. Washington lost 101-68 at home in last game, to Bulls.

Toronto won last six games, covered ten of last thirteen; they just beat Detroit 87-84 at home Friday night. Raptors covered their last five road games. Pistons split last six games, scoring 87.5 ppg in last two losses-- nine of their last thirteen games went over the total.

Clippers in dire straits, trailing Warriors by game for final spot in playoffs, but they win ties, and Golden State is playing the Mavericks at same time, so win here could put them back in 8 spot. Suns lost their last game in Houston, won't want to go in playoffs with back/back losses.

Dallas plays #8 seed in west, and Golden State has game lead for last playoff spot, so guess it comes down to who Mavericks would rather play, old friend Don Nelson or the Clippers. Dallas hasn't been trying that hard with playoffs coming up, while the Warriors have been smoking, winning seven of their last eight.

                      Boston at Toronto
The Red Sox come in off a three-game sweep of the Angels and have new sensation Daisuke Matsuzaka on the mound tonight. But Toronto counters with Gustavo Chacin, who is 5-0 lifetime against Boston tying him with Greg Maddux for the most wins against the Red Sox without a loss. While the Blue Jays are beat up with injuries to Reed Johnson, Troy Glaus and B.J. Ryan, they have enjoyed success against the Bosox in recent years, going 23-14 over the last two seasons, including 13-6 at Rogers Centre. The Blue Jays look like a decent underdog pick (+150) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Toronto favored straight up by 1 run. Dunkel Pick: Toronto (+150). Here are all of today's games.

                        Dallas at Golden State
The Warriors control their own destiny in the playoff chase and can clinch their first playoff berth in 12 years with a win tonight against Dallas combined with a Clippers loss at Phoenix. There's little reason to think Don Nelson's team won't be up to the task as Golden State has won seven of its last eight straight up and has beat the spread in five of those eight games. The Warriors have also played well against Dallas recently with a 4-0 record both straight up and ATS in their last four meetings.
