          Tuesday, April 17

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego at Cubs – Padres -105

This isn’t a road game for Greg Maddux. The 41-year-old former Cub is obviously familiar with the dimensions of Wrigley Field and no pitcher in the league is better at pitching to particular ballparks.

Expect Maddux to baffle the bats of some of his former teammates. The Cubs are a classic example of a team whose stats don’t tell the entire story. They are hitting .273 at home this season and their pitching staff has a 3.17 ERA, but the Cubs are still just 2-4 at home and have dropped 4.16 units.

The reason is an inability to win close games. The Cubs’ two wins have come by a combined 15 runs. Their four losses have come by a total of six. That’s not a good sign against a Padres bullpen that’s allowed just 11 runs in 45 innings.

          Wade Miller starts for Chicago.

Kansas City at Detroit – Royals +180

Mike Maroth shouldn’t be a 2-to-1 favorite over anyone, even the Royals. The 29-year-old left-hander did pick up the win in his last start, allowing just two runs in six innings on the road against Toronto, but Maroth allowed nine hits and two walks to that stat line, while striking out just two.

He is also backed by one of the most anemic offenses in baseball. The Tigers are hitting just .235 over their last 10 games. That includes being shut down by Kansas City starter Jorge De La Rosa on April 6. The 26-year-old left-hander threw seven innings of four-hit ball against the Tigers in a 3-1 Kansas City win.

Atlanta at Washington – Nationals +194

Home field advantage and a little stronger play recently, makes Washington a little smaller underdog this time around, but still a strong value bet nonetheless.

The Nationals pulled off a massive upset the last time these two teams met, beating the usually dominant John Smoltz 2-0 as a +265 underdog for just their second win in the season’s first 10 games.

That game sparked a run of three wins in four games for Washington, during which its pitching staff has allowed a total of six runs.

Smoltz will start again for Atlanta and will face Washington’s Jerome Williams.

Boston at Toronto – Blue Jays +137

Dominating Kansas City and Seattle is one thing, but how will Daisuke Matsuzaka fare against the major league’s top offense?

The Mariners and Royals have combined to hit just .232 and average just 3.9 runs per game. The Blue Jays are baseball’s early leaders in both batting average (.294) and runs scored (67), and they trail only the Rockies in hitting at home.

Toronto is hitting .295 at the Rogers Centre (Colorado is hitting .325) and are scoring almost five runs per game.

Dice-K’s opponent has had a lot of success against the Red Sox in his career. Left-hander Gustavo Chacin went 4-0 against Boston last year and earned 5.11 units. He had a 3.43 ERA in those games.

            Streaking Pitchers

            Tuesday, April 17

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            HOT

Daisuke Matsuzaka (Boston Red Sox) - Matsuzaka could make our hot list on hype alone, but the Japanese right-hander has been producing up to expectations. After a dominating 10-strikeout performance in his debut, Matsuzaka put in another solid effort against the Mariners last Wednesday even though he took the loss as his Red Sox were shut down in Felix Hernandez's one-hitter. He doesn't have nearly the competition today in Toronto Blue Jays starter Gustavo Chacin. Dice-K plus an injury depleted Toronto team makes Boston a tempting play at -145.

Matt Belisle (Cincinnati Reds) - Belisle comes into today's start against the Milwaukee Brewers after winning his first two games and sports an impressive 1.50 ERA. He has distinguished himself from the other Reds starters so far, having given up only two runs and seven hits through 12 innings. He has held opposing batters to a low .171 average and cashed in on the under in both outings.

Ramon Ortiz (Minnesota Twins) - Ortiz was brought into Minny to add experience to a weakened rotation and so far he's been lights out. The veteran righty is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA after giving up only three runs in 15 innings. He is even pitching late into games, shutting down the stacked New York Yankees lineup for eight innings in a 5-1 win on Wednesday. The only caveat to his success is that both wins have come at home and he starts on the road today against the Seattle Mariners, a team he hasn't faced since 2004.

            COLD

Jerome Williams (Washington Nationals) - Expect to see a lot of Washington starters on the frigid side of the streaks this season given the level of run support provided by this team. Williams is off to an 0-2 start thanks to the Nats' bats. He has not received a single run of support while pitching in either of his starts despite only allowing two earned runs through five innings last week against today's opponent. Against John Smoltz the under (8 runs) looks enticing here.

Wade Miller (Chicago Cubs) - Miller has made only one start for the Cubs but it was so bad it can qualify for a cold streak of its own. He gave up six runs and nine hits in only four innings of a 9-4 loss to Milwaukee and he has had nine days off to think about it. After missing most of 2006 recovering from shoulder surgery Miller has not won since August 2005 and has surrendered six home runs in 23 1/3 innings against the San Diego Padres.

Houston starter Roy Oswalt is taking the mound on three days' rest to give fifth starter Chris Sampson an extra day to recover from a tight calf muscle. Oswalt is 3-2 with a 4.12 ERA in six career starts on less than full rest. SLIGHT EDGE: ASTROS
Oswalt has pitched well against the Marlins in his career, going 3-2 with a 1.98 ERA in seven starts against them. EDGE: ASTROS

Los Angeles Clippers at Phoenix Suns (10 PM ET)
The Clippers would clinch the last playoff spot with a win over Phoenix and on Wednesday versus New Orleans combined with one loss by the Warriors. EDGE: CLIPPERS

Even though the Mavericks have clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, they may try particulary hard to win tonight and hurt the postseason hopes of the Warriors and former Dallas coach Don Nelson. EDGE: MAVS
No Western Conference team has swept a season series from the Mavs since the Los Angeles Lakers in 2000-01. EDGE: MAVS
