    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Orlando Magic at Philadelphia 76ers (3 PM ET)
The Magic have a 1 1/2-game lead on Indiana for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and have three games left after today. That means a win today would make put them in prime position to clinch a postseason spot. EDGE: MAGIC
The 76ers have won three straight games and have not played Orlando this season with their new lineup. Allen Iverson and Chris Webber were still on the team in the earlier two meetings, both won by Orlando. SLIGHT EDGE: 76ERS
Orlando is 5-12-1 ATS in its last 18 road games.
Philadelphia is 14-6-2 ATS in its last 22 games overall.
Underdog is 20-6 ATS in the last 26 meetings.

Denver Nuggets at Memphis Grizzlies (8 PM ET)
The Nuggets are the hottest team in the NBA right now, winning eight straight and going 6-2 ATS during that stretch. They are coming off a big win in Oklahoma City last night and are just 8-11-1 ATS when playing without rest this season. SLIGHT EDGE: NUGGETS
The Grizzlies have dropped six straight and have not played since Tuesday. They certainly seem like they don't care how the season ends. "In three games, the season's over with, and that's how I look at it," said guard Chucky Atkins. EDGE: NUGGETS
Denver is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
The OVER is 6-2 in the last 8 home games for Memphis.

Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz (10 PM ET)
The Jazz snapped a season-high five-game losing streak last night in Dallas but remain 1 1/2 games behind Houston for home-court advantage in their first-round playoff series. They have won the last four meetings with Phoenix and are 4-1 ATS in the last five games between the teams. EDGE: JAZZ
The Suns also have something to play for here, as they are just two games up on San Antonio for the #2 seed in the Western Conference. They shot a season-low 38.2 percent from the field last night yet still won their fourth straight game. EDGE: SUNS
Utah is 2-15 ATS in its last 17 games.
The UNDER is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings.
The UNDER is 4-1 in Phoenix's last 5 overall.
The OVER is 5-0 in Utah's last 5 overall.

Weekend list of 13: Random thoughts on a windy day......

            13) If you like magazines and you want to learn about sports, you read The Sporting News, not Sports Illustrated.

            12) Billy Joel is here in Albany Tuesday; tickets for Row K in Section 101 are $80 a pop. Thats an expensive Tuesday night.

            11) College football honchos wisely changed clock rules back to what they were in 2005, which will increase amounts of the plays teams run by roughly 14 a game. Good for them.

            10) How does the DA in Durham keep his job? Seriously, he tried to ruin lives of three college kids and he gets to keep a high-paying job? Why doesn't Oprah put those three kids on her show and complain how they were falsely prosecuted?

            9) Carl Crawford hit inside-park homer Friday night, helping Devil Rays end Santana's long regular season home winning streak, a night after he committed the worst baserunning error I've ever seen by a big leaguer.

            8) Tampa was tied 2-2 in 9th Thursday; they had man on first, no one out, when Crawford lines double to rightfield corner, but he tries to stretch it to triple, not knowing that runner in front of him had stopped at third. Zobrist gets in rundown as Crawford stood at third, which was bad, but not as bad as.....

7).......Crawford trying to go back to second as Zobrist is put out between home and third. Crawford gets thrown out, and Rays have bases empty, two out after a double. Inning ends, first Minnesota batter in bottom of ninth homers, game over.

            Whoops.

            6) NBC has hired the outrageous Don Cherry to work on the Stanley Cup final telecasts; the former Bruins' coach, who is (or at least, he used to be) an advocate of fighting in hockey, could be just what this country needs for NHL telecasts.

            5) Last year in major leagues, only ten games were played all season where starting temperature was under 45 degrees. So far, through Thursday's games, there were 32 such games in this month alone.

            4) Nationals are the first major league team ever that failed to score a single run in first three innings of any of their first 10 games. That new ballpark they're building down there better be something, to draw fans in to watch this terrible team.

            3) When Rangers won in Atlanta Thursday, they snapped a 10-game losing streak in playoff series openers.

            2) If Jeremy Shockey and Plaxico Burress won't go to New Jersey for offseason workouts with Eli Manning, why doesn't Eli head to south Florida for workouts? In this day and age, QB and receivers need as much practice as possible.

            1) Can I apply for the Hawai'i coaching job? Is it too late?

                      HOT

Rich Hill (Chicago Cubs) - Hill came out of the gate this season throwing some serious smoke. His first start may have come against a lackluster Milwaukee Brewers' lineup, but when you toss six strikeouts, no walks and give up just a solo home run, it's a money outing. He'll look to build on that today against another soft lineup in the Cincinnati Reds. The Cubbies are listed as -127 home favorites.

Orlando Hernandez (New York Mets) - Whoever said El Duque's stuff was now non-existant must not have seen him pitch in awhile. The 38-year-old right-hander has been money for the Mets in his first two starts this season, lasting an average of 6 1/2 innings and posting a 1.38 ERA. If he can limit the walks he gives up, Hernandez could be in for a stellar comeback year. He'll square off against Shawn Hill and the Washington Nationals today as a -240 home favorite, a team he's dominated throughout his career.

Jake Peavy (San Diego Padres) - If this year's Padres could offer some run support to Peavy, he would have a 2-0 start on his resume. With a staggering 0.69 ERA and an average of 4 1/2 strikeouts, San Diego's ace has been close to untouchable so far. If history serves him well then tonight's start against the Dodgers should bring in more of the same numbers used to, as he has a 6-1 career record against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Oddsmakers list the Padres as -115 as road favorites.

                      COLD

Sidney Ponson (Minnesota Twins) - When was the last time you saw something positive about Sidney Ponson? No matter where he takes the mound good things rarely follow. This year is no exception. In his first start against the Yankees he gave up eight earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, managing just two strikeouts. His fortunes may change tonight against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, but don't underestimate the strength of the young D-Rays batters. The Twins are -139 home favorites.

Barry Zito (San Francisco Giants) - The Giants paid a hefty price to get the A's former ace and so far they haven't seen much bang for their buck. Zito's pitching combined with the Giants' lack of hitting has produced an 0-2 start and an 8.18 ERA. His opponents weren't exactly stacked with sluggers either. Even though the Giants are listed as -122 road favorites against the Pirates, don't automatically give Zito the nod.

Odalis Perez (Kansas City Royals) - Starting the season against the Red Sox and the Blue Jays usually doesn't lead to fantastic numbers. However, most teams would like their pitchers to last longer than an average of three innings. Perez has started the year about as poorly as any other starter in the majors, posting a 10.80 ERA and 2.40 WHIP. Perez has enjoyed some success against his opponent tonight, the Baltimore Orioles, but books have paid little attention to that, making him a +161 underdog.
