Weekend list of 13: Random thoughts, mostly on baseball....
13) Devil Rays' marketing team is better under new ownership they had their fifth sellout in 10 years Friday. It helps that the team finally brought up lot of their bright young prospects that should have been in majors last season.
12) Iwamura, the Japanese third baseman, is off to a hot start after a terrible spring; he is an excellent fielder, and hits a lot like Ichiro Suzuki, slapping ball to left field a lot.
11) Last season, Orlando Hernandez' starts averaged longest games in baseball, at 3:01 per start.
10) One of the worst rules in sports came up again last night, as Seattle-Cleveland game was washed out in top of the fifth inning, with Indians leading, 4-0. All games should be played out to nine innings; nothing should get washed out.
9) Not only is it stupid to play games in those conditions (the Indians lost Victor Martinez with leg injury), but to then wipe out results of things that happen is even goofier. If Tribe had gotten one more out, Paul Byrd would have had a five-inning no-hitter, much like David Palmer did couple of decades ago.
8) If you have Jason Michaels on your fantasy team (I don't), you lost two runs scored and 2-2 at the plate. So it goes.
7) Last season, Alex Smith became first 49er QB to play every snap in a season. Pretty impressive, considering some of the QBs they've had out there.
6) Dallas Cowboys haven't drafted an offensive player in first round since TE David LaFleur, back in 1997.
5) The last time a QB and WR from same school were drafted in first round was in '98 (Peyton Manning/Marcus Nash).
4) Kei Igawa is first pitcher in years, that I can remember, who wears shades on the hill. Igawa was awful Saturday, but was bailed out, by six-run ninth inning rally by Bronx.
3) Hideki Matsui left Saturday's game with hamstring issues. Football players have to look at baseball guys and scoff.
2) Arizona rookie Micah Owings looked like a keeper Friday.
1) The FOX Saturday baseball package is an insult to suckers like myself who buy the Extra Innings tier.We lose out on lot of games; FOX has exclusive rights on Saturday afternoons. We'd see all the Met/Bronx games, anyway.
