Texas at Los Angeles: Pick Angeles -147

Last season the Los Angeles Angels had arguably the league’s best young pitching staff. Now, with one more year of experience and maturity, their staff should be even better.

Today’s starter Ervin Santana is excited about showing off his improved slider today against the Texas Rangers.

“It’s ready to go and it’s very good,” Santana told the L.A. Daily News. “I will throw it at any time, on any count.”

This isn’t good news for the Rangers lineup. Last year in two starts in Angels Stadium against Texas, Santana went 2-0 with a 3.21 ERA.

Oakland at Seattle: Pick Athletics -122

Don’t sleep on Rich Harden. At the start of last season, Sports Illustrated senior baseball writer Tom Verducci predicted the A’s flamethrower would win the American League Cy Young award. If Harden hadn’t been injured for most of last season he probably would be the opening day starter instead of No. 3 in the rotation.

Don’t be fooled by his spot in the rotation. Harden has a nasty splitter and his fastball tops out at 97 mph. He looked great in spring training with a 1.53 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 17 innings of work.

Expect Harden to salvage the last game of this series against the Seattle Mariners. Don’t forget Oakland won 17 of 19 games against Seattle last year.

San Diego at San Francisco: Pick Padres -102

What a weird offseason for the San Francisco Giants. Besides losing Jason Schmidt and signing free agent Barry Zito, the Giants grabbed two outfielders and a manager from the San Diego Padres. Their roster moves resemble a game of musical chairs involving Major League teams in California.

“It’s behind me now,” former Padres and current Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “It’s over; I’ve moved on.”

His managing days with the Padres are behind him, but he still has to find a way to beat his former team after yesterday’s 7-0 thumping.

Padres starter Chris Young hasn’t lost an away game since June of last year. During that stretch he’s complied a 9-0 record in 24 road starts.

New York at St. Louis: Pick Mets +100

The St. Louis Cardinals pitching rotation has reached an all-hands-on-deck situation because of an elbow injury to staff ace Chris Carpenter. Longtime reliever Braden Looper will make his first start since a Single-A game in 1997.

The New York Mets' batting lineup is as good as, and maybe even better than, the Yankees'. The key to the Mets offense is leadoff hitter Jose Reyes and how often he can get on base. If he’s on first, he’s always a distraction to the pitcher because of his ability to steal bases. The two walks and three runs Reyes has accumulated in just two games is a great sign for Mets backers.
