    Six-Pack for Wednesday

-- Chris Carpenter already has sore elbow; Braden Looper is Cardinals' #3 starter; early mess for the defending champs.

-- Pirates and Brewers are both 2-0; could it be?

-- Best game of night was Colorado's 4-3, 11-inning win vs Arizona, when Snakes scored in top if 11th, then watched Rockies win game on Iannetta's game-winning single.

-- Giants lost Barry Zito's debut 7-0; hard to win when you don't score any runs. Barry Bonds did steal a base- his legs appear stronger this spring.

-- Boy, the Nationals appear to be an awful team.

-- Seattle, Angels are already two games up on A's, Rangers in the AL West. Oakland has dominated Seattle recently, but not so this season.

Wednesday's list of 13: Teams that slipped badly in 2007

Using the RPI as a reference point, here are the 13 teams that slipped the most from last season to this........

      13) Rutgers, -140 slots (75 to 215). New coach, no offense; in early season loss to Kansas State, they shot 19% from floor.

      12) Manhattan, -144 (87 to 231) New coach who lost couple of transfers when Gonzalez went to Seton Hall. They showed a little life at end of regular season.

T10) Sacramento State, -148 (154 to 302) Big Sky isn't a very strong league, and Hornets slipped intolower half this year.

T10) Coastal Carolina, -148 (121 to 269) This is case of 2005's mark being unusually high; #269 RPI was closer to the normal level Chanticleers reside at.

      9) Montana, -159 (61 to 220) Another new coach, plus loss of nucleus of team that had beaten Nevada in NCAAs in 2006.

      8) Denver, -162 (173 to 335) Fired coach after season; after it missed NCAAs with star player Nicholson in '05, outlook was bleak. Pioneers now have former coach Scott on board.

      7) LaSalle, -165 (103 to 268) Explorers haven't been same since they left the MAAC in early 90's; how can a team located in a hoops hotbed like Philly be this bad?

      6) Northern Illinois, -175 (126 to 301) Fired coach after season now have former Colorado coach Patton, which may mean it wasa blessing in disguise to be so bad this season.

      5) Colorado, -178 (59 to 237) Unless you consider that this is Patton's old team, which graduated ten seniors in '06; they knew in fall that Patton was lame duck this season.

      4) Wisconsin-Milwaukee, -184 (52 to 236) Bruce Pearl's magic (and recruits) finally moved on, and this team dropped like a rock in not-so-great Horizon League.

      3) St Peter's, -201 (127 to 328) New coach, but playing without all-time leading scorer Clark for first time proved a disaster. Doesn't New Jersey have lot of good young hoopers?

      2) NC-Wilmington, -234 (28 to 262) Bonehead administrator of year is UNCW's athletic director, who let Brad Brownell go to Wright State (they improved 107 spots this year) while the Seahawks' program went down the drain. Brilliant!!!!

      1) Iona, -262, (64 to 326) Not easy to drop 262 spots in a 336-team ranking, but Gaels won only two games, after leading at half vs LSU in NCAA game in '05. Gaels fired their coach, but haven't replaced him yet, so outlook is hardly brighter.

                    Charlotte at Washington
The absence of Caron Butler was noticeable last night as the Wizards were pounded in Charlotte (122-102). Washington will try to return the favor tonight in the second game of a home-and-home series. But Eddie Jordan's team has not been putting up big numbers lately and is just 4-6 against the spread in their last 10 games, including 0-2 in their last two at home. The Bobcats, meanwhile, are 7-3 ATS overall and 3-2 in their last five on the road. Charlotte looks like a good underdog pick (+7) in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Bobcats favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Charlotte (+7). Here are all of today's games.

                      Boston at Kansas City
No doubt the Red Sox will finish quite a few games ahead of the Royals in the win column this season. But on opening day it was Kansas City that looked like the World Series contender as the Royals beat Curt Schilling (7-1). Today Buddy Bell's team will face Josh Beckett, who was inconsistent last season. While Beckett won 16 games, he gave up a career-high 74 walks and 36 homers, second-most in the majors, to go along with his 5.01 ERA. With the KC offense coming off a 12-hit performance at home, the Royals look capable of getting to Beckett and are a decent underdog pick (+165) according to Dunkel, which has Kansas City favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Kansas City (+165). Here are all of today's games.
