          Write-up

          Sunday, April 1

Once season gets underway a bit, we'll have lists of hot teams, cold teams, totals, umpires, hot and cold pitchers. The first week we're gathering info and using last year's pitching stats as point of reference. Enjoy the season, and good luck.

Glavine was 3-1, 1.17 in his last four '06 starts, 2-1, 3.18 in three starts vs St Louis. His first seven starts last year stayed under the total, as NY started out 14-2 in his first sixteen starts. Cards were 10-4 in Carpenter's last 14 starts; he was 0-1, 7.11 in pair of playoff starts against the Mets, both at Shea. Carpenter was 3-1, 1.80 in six April starts last season. St Louis beat the Mets in the NLCS in seven dramatic games.

            Season Opener Info

            Sunday, April 1

            Cards, Mets open MLB season

The 2007 Major League Baseball season opens on Sunday night with a rematch of last year's National League Championship Series; Chris Carpenter and the St. Louis Cardinals will be gunning for another victory over Tom Glavine and the New York Mets.

After struggling down the stretch and finishing last year with a record of just 83-78 (worst amongst all the playoff teams), the NL Central champions weren't considered strong contenders to advance even a round in the postseason. Nevertheless, the Cards knocked off the San Diego Padres in their NLDS, got past the Mets in a seven-game series, and then defeated the Detroit Tigers in just five games for the World Series title.

And now the Cardinals will be looking to defend that championship in 2007. However, they'll have to do it with a revamped pitching staff behind ace starter Chris Carpenter. Gone from the rotation are Jeff Suppan, Jeff Weaver, and Jason Marquis, while Mark Mulder isn't expected back from a shoulder injury until later in the summer. Those losses allow Anthony Reyes in move into the rotation full-time, while free-agent signing Kip Wells and converted relievers Adam Wainwright and Braden Looper fill out the staff.

It's Carpenter, though, who will get the ball for the Cardinals on Sunday night. The righthander went 15-8 last season with a 3.09 ERA and 184 strikeouts. Those numbers were down from 2005 (21-5, 2.83 ERA, 213 strikeouts), but Carpenter was still one of the best pitchers in the National League and a contender for another Cy Young award. Both of Carpenter's starts against the Mets last year came in the playoffs; he gave up five runs over five innings in his first start (but St. Louis got the win), and two runs over six innings in his second start (but St. Louis took the defeat). The OVER/UNDER was at 1-1.

On offense St. Louis is still led by first baseman Albert Pujols, who batted .331 with 49 home runs and 137 RBI in 2006 (so any spring struggles have been largely ignored). Scott Rolen adds some pop on the other side of the infield, while center fielder Jim Edmonds is recovering from shoulder surgery but should be in the lineup on Sunday. Chris Duncan will have a starting spot in the outfield as well, while Scott Spiezio will fill in for the injured Juan Encarnacion (sore wrist) to start the year. The combo of David Eckstein and Adam Kennedy has been reunited in the middle of the infield, while Yadier Molina (.216 batting average in 2006) resumes catching duties and attempts to avoid killing rallies.

Battling those hitters on Sunday night will be Mets starting pitcher Tom Glavine. The veteran lefthander has been handed the ace role on New York's pitching staff, with Pedro Martinez sidelined until after the All-Star break. Glavine turned in another solid campaign in 2006, going 15-7 with a 3.82 ERA, and collecting 131 strikeouts. As well, the Mets went 2-1 in Glavine's three starts against St. Louis last season (1-0 in the regular season, 1-1 in the playoffs), and he allowed just six runs over those 17 innings.

Glavine will be followed in the Mets' rotation this year by Orlando Hernandez, John Maine, Oliver Perez, and prospect Mike Pelfrey (who beat out veterans Chan Ho Park and Aaron Sele for the spot). Martinez is still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, and the Mets would be very happy if he could return to the mound in early July.

However, it's the offense that's expected to carry New York to a second straight NL East division title (they finished 12 games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the standings last season with a 97-65 record). The infield of Carlos Delgado, Jose Valentin, Jose Reyes, and David Wright is one of the most potent in the league, while star Carlos Beltran will be joined in the team's outfield by veterans Moises Alou and Shawn Green (at least until super-prospect Lastings Milledge takes over the job from Green). Paul Lo Duca will once again be the team's primary catcher for the '07 season.

The Mets and Cardinals will take Monday off, then resume their series at Busch Stadium on Tuesday night. The third and final game of the opening set is slated for Wednesday night. New York will then travel to Atlanta for a three-game series against the Braves, while St. Louis will hit the road for three games against the Houston Astros.
