    Six-Pack for Sunday

We're looking at all thirty big league teams during spring training; today, we look at the Chicago Cubs

-- Alfonso Soriano got $136M for eight years, but he isn't a pitcher, and thats where Cubs need most help.

-- Cubs committed six errors in game last year against the Dodgers, and still won.

-- Derrek Lee has homered on his birthday (Sept 6) the last four seasons.

-- Rich Hill was 6-3, 2.93 in his last 13 appearances last year.

-- Cubs allowed eight home runs in game twice last year.

-- Its all about players; otherwise, Piniella would have won in Tampa. We'll see if the Cubs have enough pitching.

Saturday night's list of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

      13) The NCAA tournament never disappoints; even though Thursday was an uneventful day, Saturday more than made up for it with three OT games and eight highly competitive games. Tremendous action all day long.

      12) I wouldn't want to sit behind Acie Law III at a game; the guy never seems to sit down. His son is terrific; Dominique Kirk is Michael Cooper; solid defender, scores when needed, clutch player. He's a 10-year NBA guy. Quite a set of guards Aggies have; the Sloan kid is explosive with the ball.

      11) If they called every foul that occurred in A&M-Louisville game, they'd still be there, shooting free throws. Aggies are lucky they get to rest for few days, and very lucky to have a pair of games in Texas (San Antonio) next weekend.

      10) Sometimes, handicapping comes down to making best out of what the damn selection committee gives us; for example, I would have loved to have picked both Vanderbilt, Wash St in this second round, but they got put in same bracket, so you can't pick either one. Some years work out better than others.

      9) Washington State is more aggressive on offense than you think, because of the Bennett reputation, but they'll take the opening for a quick hoop anytime its given.

      8) My favorite player to watch this season, of all the games I watched, was Kyle Weaver of Washington State; he is tough scrappy, can score when needed. Underpublicized because he plays out west, but he had a super season.

      7) Tubby Smith is catching grief on many fronts, but mainly because they've lost six in row vs Florida, four in row against Vanderbilt. From what I've seen, those teams are really good, so while UK fans should be disappointed, you really want to fire a guy because he's lost some to really good teams?

      6) Michigan fired Tommy Amaker; question is, where do they go from here? Gillespie? Montgomery? Tubby? Theus?

      5) I would have three questions for Kentucky fan who wants Tubby to quit/get fired:
      a) Who are you going to get who is a better coach?
      b) How did you ever let Pitino get away?
      c) Do you have any idea how much harder it is now to get in the Final Four? To expect a coach to get there every three or four years really isn't realistic anymore.

      4) I never get enough of the Budweiser commercial with the mascots. When Holy Cross won Patriot League tournament this month, their womens' hoop coach (a guy) was mascot for that game. I would love to be a mascot for a game sometime.

      3) Len Elmore seems like a normal, reasonable guy who rarely gets angry. They should team him with Gus Johnson, to keep the overly hip Johnson in his place.

One thing, though; the first half of UCLA-Indiana was awful, even though the teams were trying very hard. Elmore kept telling us what how great the defense was. Bull. Kids were clanking free throws, missing layups; don't mistake effort for achievement. Every game can't be great.

      2) How was Greg Oden's fifth foul not an intentional foul; he decked the kid!!!! Ohio State doesn't win if the call is made.

      1) Final tally on the day: underdogs were 6-2, after a 9-23 first round; over was 6-2, and is now 22-18 for tournament.

                    Kentucky vs. Kansas
Kentucky survived the first round with a solid win over Villanova behind Randolph Morris' 12th double-double of the season (19 points, 11 rebounds). No doubt Tubby Smith will rely heavily on Morris today. But the Wildcats run into a Kansas team that is a notch above Villanova in both size and speed. No team has been hotter down the stretch than the Jayhawks, who have won 12 straight including a 107-67 blowout of Niagara in Round 1. Bill Self's team is outscoring opponents by 18 points and outrebounding them by 7 1/2, while keeping up a frenetic offensive pace. Four scorers average in double figures with a fifth (Sherron Collins) just missing (9.8 ppg). The Wildcats lost to Kentucky a year ago by 27 (73-46) at Allen Fieldhouse. While the outcome should be closer on a neutral court, the Jayhawks still look to have enough to cover the Vegas line (-8) according to Dunkel, which has Kansas favored by 14. Dunkel Pick: Kansas (-8). Here are all of today's games.

                            San Jose at Colorado
The Sharks have cleaned up against lower-rated teams lately with four straight wins over Edmonton, Chicago, Phoenix and Columbus by the combined score of 18-2. But Colorado represents a step up in competition today as the Avalanche come in with a 7-0-1 record in their last eight games. The streak has pulled the Avs to within six points of slumping Calgary for the final playoff spot in the West. Paul Statsny continued his rookie record point streak (20) by scoring two goals against Phoenix in a 6-3 win on Saturday. Peter Budaj has also been solid in net, allowing only 16 goals over the eight-game span. The Avalanche look like a good home underdog pick according to Dunkel, which has Colorado favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Colorado (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

The return of Yao Ming has been a shot in the arm for Houston as the Rockets have won five of their last six, including a 114-100 win at Toronto on Friday. But they run into a surprisingly hot Philadelphia team today that actually still has a shot at getting back into the playoff picture in the East. Home cooking has helped the Sixers as they've won eight of their last nine at the Wachovia Center with the latest coming by a point over Northwest Division-leading Utah (89-88) on Kyle Korver's bucket with 5.1 seconds left. The Sixers look like a good home underdog pick (+5 1/2) in this one according to Dunkel, which has Philadelphia favored straight up by 1 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Philadelphia (+5 1/2).
