The LSU men's basketball team went from the penthouse to the outhouse in one season. The Tigers, who made it to the 2006 Final Four, were left out of the 2007 postseason picture when they were left out of the 32-team National Invitational Tournament field announced tonight. The last time LSU missed the postseason was 2000-01, when the Tigers finished 13-16. LSU made NIT appearances in 2002 and '04 and NCAA trips in '03, '05 and '06. In fact, the entire state of Louisiana was left out of the men's postseason field.

BATON ROUGE -- The LSU men's basketball team will wait on its postseason future until 8 p.m. CT Sunday night when ESPN2 and ESPNU will present for the first time the selection show announcement of the field for the 32-team MasterCard National Invitation Tournament.

The tournament begins at campus sites this week with the first round of games set for Tuesday and Wednesday night.

Under the new NIT format, the tournament will be seeded into four eight-team brackets with the higher seeds hosting. Also the most important aspect for the Tigers appearance in the bracket is that regular season conference champions are automatically guaranteed a spot in the NIT if they do not win the automatic bid in the conference tournament or earn an at-large NCAA bid. As of Saturday mid-afternoon, six teams had earned NIT bids through the automatic qualification.

The first three rounds are played at campus sites before the national semis and finals are played at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
