              Six-Pack for Saturday

Random notes from world of sports.......

-- Astros have kid named Pence who is hitting .722 so far in spring training.

-- They drew 9,111 for Red Sox-Phillies exhibition game.

-- Mets' prospect Philip Humber is getting pounded this spring, allowing eight runs in three innings so far. On TV broadcast Friday, they were debating how Mets are going to handle his imminent demotion to minor league camp.

-- Joe McEwing is on the Red Sox; this guy is amazing, he always finds a job somewhere.

-- Cleveland Browns traded Ruben Droughens, a decent RB to Giants for a totally unproductive Tim Carter, who is fast but isn't a good player. No wonder Browns always lose.

-- When was last time both Mississippi schools were alive in semifinals of SEC tournament?

Saturday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college hoop Friday

                13) Utah State-New Mexico State final in the WAC knocks a bubble club out of the NCAAs; not sure Rhode Island-GW games does in Atlantic 14, since in my opinion, Xavier isn't a cinch to get into tournament, while Nevada is.

                12) Jamont Gordon of Mississippi State is awesome; he had 26 pts, 11 boards in wild 84-82 OT win over Kentucky, game that saw three Bulldogs foul out, as referees, how can I say this, um, didn't exactly give Miss State an even whistle.

                12) Gordon hit huge fadeaway trey at buzzer of regulation to tie game, after lane violation cost Kentucky chance at a foul shot that would have clinched the win. Randolph Morris was huge for Kentucky, but their perimeter guys struggled.

                11) Miss State had been winless in games decided by five or less points, so this has to be huge relief for them.

                10) Three of four SEC teams that got bye Thursday were dog to team that played Thursday. Thats a little strange. Of three bye teams that were a dog, only Vanderbilt lost, but they did beat the spread, losing 72-71.

                9) Illinois got last laugh for this year vs Indiana, beating IU in rubber match of Big 11's newest blood feud, but next time the teams meet, Mr Gordon will be a Hoosier.

                8) Bob Huggins has 22 wins at Kansas State, Andy Kennedy is in SEC semifinals with Ole Miss, while Cincinnati was 16th in a 16-team Big East. Must be some happy fans out there in the Queen City.

                7) Texas was down 43-25 at half, but of course, Kevin Durant bailed Longhorns out, playing all forty minutes as Longhorns rallied to nip stubborn Baylor. Durant might be Superman.

                6) Houston had relatively easy 15-point win vs Rice, but they still had two guys play 40 minutes, as coach Penders had to be thinking of his team blowing 24-point second half lead in first game vs Owls this season.

                5) UNLV-BYU final in Mountain West, to me, isn't critical as it looks; I think they'll be the two MWC teams in field of 65.

                4) How would you like to ref Kansas State-Texas Tech game? Not lot of love for the refs from either bench in that one......

                3) Big East teams that win tournament game in OT are 1-17 in their next game of tournament.

                2) Long Beach State's eight seniors will get tough test from a red-hot Cal Poly squad in Big West final Saturday night.

                1) In the 33 lined games played Friday, 17 of them had double digit margins at halftime; in those 17 games, the team that had the lead lost five times, including Baylor (43-25), Louisville (37-26), Miami (38-28), Kent State (33-19), Virginia (40-26).
