San Diego State at New Mexico
The Aztecs slipped at Wyoming (90-81) over the weekend, but prior to that they had won five in a row, including a 21-point win over Air Force (62-41 on Feb. 6). While San Diego State was done in by the Cowboys' Brad Jones (32 points), the good news was that the Aztecs' senior combo of Brandon Heath and Mohamed Abukar continued to put up solid numbers (22 and 16 points, respectively). Tonight they travel to New Mexico to face a Lobos team that has lost five of its last eight. In addition, leading scorer J.R. Giddens was kicked out of practice on Friday and has been suspended indefinitely. When these two teams met on Jan. 17, the Aztecs came away with a five-point win (73-68) with Giddens in the lineup. Vancouver at Anaheim
Vancouver has lost five straight to Anaheim, including both matchups this season by a combined score of 8-1. But the Canucks come in on a roll, having won four straight and seven of their last 10 to move past Calgary into first place in the Northwest. Their latest win, 5-4 over Colorado on Sunday, came despite an off night from goalie Roberto Luongo, who gave up all four goals. Prior to that Luongo had gone 3-0-0 with a 1.59 GAA in his previous three games. The Ducks looked sloppy in their last outing, losing at home to last-place Los Angeles in overtime. Overall Anaheim is just 3-5 in their last eight games. Vancouver looks like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Canucks favored straight up by 1. Minnesota at Washington
While Washington leads the division this late in the year for the first time since the 1978-79 season, the Wizards stumbled into the All-Star break with four losses in their last six games. The injury to Antawn Jamison has rippled through the entire team, including All-Star Gilbert Arenas, who averaged just 19.0 points per game on 31.6 percent shooting over the last three games. As a team the Wizards averaged just 82.7 points on 36.8 percent shooting over that span. The T'wolves won three of their last four going into the break. Kevin Garnett continues to put up big numbers (45 double-doubles), but the pleasant surprise has been Mark Blount, who is averaging 22.8 points over his last four games.
