          Six-Pack for Sunday

Facts about college nicknames, from a 1989 book written by Michael Lessiter......

-- Cal-Irvine's Peter the Anteater was inspired by the comic strip B.C. UC-Irvine opened in '65, and held an election for the mascot. Peter got 56% of the vote.

-- New Mexico's Lobo mascot is actually the Spanish word for timber wolf, a ferocious, wild animal of the Southwest.

-- New Orleans' Privateer logo comes from Jean Lafiitte and the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Lafitte Privateers fought off British forces n that battle; their association with New Orleans is what inspired school leaders to pick that name.

-- Illinois-Chicago chose Flames as their mascot because its campus isn't far from the site of great Chicago fire of 1871.

-- Rider's Bronc mascot was designed by legendary hoop coach Clair Bee, who was AD at Rider in 1928.

-- Southern Illinois' Saluki mascot is not only the world's fastest dog, it is oldest pure breed in world, tracing back to Egypt as early as 3600 BC.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

            13) Tony Dungy once lost the NFC title game 11-6; now he's won a playoff game 15-6. What an ugly game.

            12) You just got the feeling that every time the Saints needed a helping hand Saturday night, a yellow flag came out to aid the cause. Saints seem like a team of destiny.

            11) Put it this way; the previous 39 years before this one, the fumbled pitch with 3:00 to play results in a TD that costs the Saints another bitter defeat. But not this season.

            10) Maryland played as hard as it could vs Clemson Saturday a maximum effort, and they played pretty well, but still could only beat Tigers by five. Clemson is #2 team in ACC for sure.

            9) USC-UCLA is now a bigtime rivalry; Saturday's ending was amazing and when OJ Mayo shows up next season, Trojans might have a better team. Tim Floyd was great hire by USC.

            8) Penn was 4-4 from foul line Saturday, Cornell 9-9. I cannot remember another game where neither side missed a foul shot

            7) San Francisco is 2-0 in WCC, winning both games in OT. One of their players is Alan Wiggins Jr, son of former major league second baseman who played for several teams.

            6) Pizza places need to hire people to work phones who can actually speak English. This isn't too much to ask.

            5) Iona coach Jeff Ruland is having nightmare season, at 0-15 but he was a good NBA player in brief career, scoring 17.4 ppg, grabbing 10.2 rebounds/game in 332 career NBA games.

            4) Air Force came from behind again to beat Wyoming; they scored winning hoop on out-of-bounds play with :01.2 left. Air Force bench played total of 12 minutes, not good.

            3) Michael Strahan won't be retiring anytime soon; expect to see some more Subway ads after he was ordered by court to pay his ex-wife $15.3M, thats million, with an M.

            2) Final score from D-III ranks Friday night:
Grinnell 142, Lawrence 130, in OT. Grinnell plays 15 guys and they run and chuck worse than Loyola Marymount used to.

            1) Colt-Raven game was fourth NFL playoff game without at least one TD, first since Rams beat Bucs 9-0 in NFC title tilt after 1979 season.
