The Yankees are made of money are not the type of franchise who needs to cut payroll....unless they have somebody in the wings who is better than Randy Johnson or Gary Sheffield then trading them was a mistake.

The Yankees are not a team who needs to develop talent so they can have them cheap for 3 or 4 years so they can be competitive while watching the budget...........the Yankees wait while others develop their talent then the Yankees swoop in and pay them.

This is MLB and this is how it works because the Yankees have enough television money to run 10 MLB teams......I think moving Sheffield and Johnson was not done because they are becoming economically savvy but it was done to better improve chemistry.......IMHO I think the Yankees are trying to get away from the star laden team and back to some of the basics of the late 90s teams that won with some star power and mostly grit.

Cashman IMO also is still plain stupid and cant touch the likes of a Dave Dombrowski or a John Scheurholtz from Atlanta or a Billy Beane....just my thoughts

      PEACE
I disagree MCP...I am always the first to bash Cashman as I think he has done a shit job with this team year after year. But I applaud him for getting rid of big contracts. I also think that while the Yankees have more money than anybody, they are being a little more savvy these days with how they spend it. If they weren't, they would have bid $70m on the Japanese pitcher, D Mat.

I don't think they got rid of Sheffield because of his chemostry issues....yes, he was a bad guy in the clubhouse but he became a malcontent because he had nowhere to play. Where did you expect him to play with Abreau, Damon and Matsui in the OF? He was a disaster at 1B, so that isn't an option and Giambi is the DH. And according to some of the baseball experts on ESPN, a couple of the guys they got from Detroit for Sheff are pretty good so the trade would seem to be a win-win.

And I think getting rid of RJ opens up some $$$ for Clemens. If he fails to get Clemens, he has stockpiled minor leaguers to take a run at Willis or Santana (some say the Twins may deal him if they aren't competitive later this year...who knows). With pitcher salaries being what they have become, small market teams are going to be looking for young arms more than ever and the Yanks are reloading. He also gained a decet middle reliever which has been a weak point for the Yankees for years.

It hurts me to say it, but I think Cashman has done good and he has been financially smart.

3Jack I agree with most of what you say but the only reason the Yanks even need prospects is so they have something to deal at the deadline.

Tigers last year depended on the likes of youngsters such as Granderson, Verlander, Zumaya, Miner, Inge, Monroe, Bonderman etc etc etc.......80% of MLB teams need contributions from unknown youngsters in order to compete but the likes of the Yanks do not.........they just run you with talent whether they are 23 years old or 43 years old.

What I dont like is when people assume Yanks were shrewd to cut payroll and gather up minor league talent........trust me when I say this if Steinbrenner thought for 1 second this is what Cashman was trying to do he would be fired yesterday.

Yankees do not prepare for the future.....they just pay for it......and honestly thats what they should do.......Steinbrenner isnt getting any younger. What I do like is this offseason with all the stupid spending is the Yankees didnt get involved.

When guys like Gil Meche and Ted Lilly are makin more than 10 million that makes Pavano and Wright (if they were ever healthy) look like bargains.......this is why I love baseball is because we can all look at the same thing and have many different opinions and to a certain extent we can all be right.

BTW I think Joel Pineiro at 4 million for a season was a bargain for the Red Sox......IMO this guy has a very live arm and can be a great closer with the right guidance and quite honestly I really cant distinguish him all that much from a guy like Lilly or Meche.....can you?

I look at some of these deals and I wonder what these GMs are smoking......guys like dependable Mark Loretta get these meager deals and guys like a Juan Pierre break the bank.......baseball is a beautiful game to watch and is by far my most favorite sport.

GL with yer Giants this weekend Bro

        PEACE

I agree 100% on this!! Now all we gotta do is move Giambi for more top pitching prospects and we will be all set....
