              Dunkel - Write up

              NFL

              Cleveland at Houston
Nothing on the line in this game except pride and that would seem to favor the Texans, who look to end the season on a winning note for the first time in the team's five-year history. Houston is coming off a confidence-building 27-24 win over the Colts that marked their first win against Indy after dropping nine straight. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the performance of Ron Dayne, who suddenly looks like his Heisman Trophy season of 1999. Dayne ran for a career-high 153 yards against the Colts and now has five TDs in his last four games. He looks to have another big day against a Browns' defense that ranks 30th against the run (145.3 yards per game). Stopping the run may be the least of Cleveland's problems as the offense looked awful in last week's 22-7 loss to Tampa Bay. Complicating matters is the fact that third-string QB Ken Dorsey has been forced into service after injuries to Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson. Houston looks like a solid pick to cover the Vegas line (-4) according to Dunkel, which has the Texans favored by 8. Dunkel Pick: Houston (-4).

              NCAA Football

              Nevada vs. Miami (FL)
Nevada ended the regular season with a 38-7 loss to Boise State, raising questions about whether the Wolf Pack can hang with the elite teams in college football. In Miami, Nevada will certainly face a team with an elite reputation, but the performance on the field has been another matter. The Hurricanes fell to 6-6 this season costing coach Larry Coker his job. And only one of those victories (Boston College) came against a team with a rating higher than Nevada's. The 'Canes also had trouble on the road, losing four of five with the only win coming by just five points against lower-rated Duke (20-15). Traveling to Idaho for the MPC Computers Bowl is not exactly what Miami has become accustomed to in postseason play. For Nevada it doesn't get much bigger and the Pack should bring plenty of energy. Nevada looks like a good underdog pick in this one according to Dunkel, which has the Wolf Pack favored straight up by 3. Dunkel Pick: Nevada (+3 1/2).

                      Six-Pack for Sunday

There were three bowl games Saturday; the team that led at the half lost all three games.

The Big 11 is now 0-3 in bowls, with Iowa, Purdue and Minnesota all losing, Gophers, Hawkeyes blowing leads. .

Iona lost to Princeton by 11; they still haven't won game or even covered one yet.

Tony Bennett is doing nice job with Washington State's hoop team; Coogs got win at USC to split LA trip.

Was very impressed by Jason Campbell Saturday; he is going to be much better in NFL than he was in college.

TV networks have to be sick that the Giants won, making just about all the NFL games Sunday meaningless.

                        Sunday's List of 13:

Notes from the ESPN Sports Almanac

My mind is pudding from watching games and handicapping so I am using the ESPN Sports Almanac to help me through today. Here are some things I learned from scanning the book

                        13) Of the top 10 teams in the final 2001 college football poll, only four of them are still at that school, five years later, and only 10 of the Top 25 are still in the same place.

                        12) It has been 19 years since someone stole 100 bases in one season; Vince Coleman did it three years in row ('85-'87).

                        11) Bulls' coach Scott Skiles holds the NBA record for assists in one game, with 30 vs Denver back in 1990.

                        10) If you look at the final AP college basketball poll from six years ago, only seven of the top 16 coaches are still at same school they were at then.

                        9) Americans won ten of the last twelve British Opens.

                        8) Smarty Jones earned $7,563,535 in 2005, the most a horse has ever won in one year; the next highest was Cigar in 1996, with $4,910,000.

                        7) The highest average on the Pro Bowlers' Tour was in 1999, when Parker Bohn averaged 221.54. The two years I bowled in a league, think my average was 153, partially because I had sauce from chicken wings on my hand all the time. Not good.

                        6) Tommy Prothro is in College Football's Hall of Fame; I had no idea, just remember Prothro as the coach of the Rams in between George Allen and Chuck Knox, the first period of lean years in my tenure as a Ram fan. He had lot of trick plays which I liked, but the Rams were in decline; he actually did a lot to get them better for when Knox took over.

                        5) Gary Smith once lost 48 games in one season as goalie for the California Golden Seals, most losses by an NHL goalie in one season. The Seals were owned by Charles O. Finley, and they wore white ice skates. Seriously.

                        4) Kentucky Wesleyan played in D-II national championship game in basketball six years in row, from 1998-2003, but lost four of the six finals.

                        3) Elmore Smith holds the NBA record with 17 blocked shots in one game, vs Portland in 1973.

                        2) David Klingler once passed for 732 yards in a game against Arizona State in 1990.

                        1) From 1993-2005, five of the twelve receivers with the most receptions in that season played for University of Nevada.
