No question the Rockets will struggle without Yao as they did in losing to the Pacers (81-76) on the 26th. But Houston also showed it still had enough talent to beat New Jersey by 25 (96-71) the next night behind Shane Battier's 23 points and T-Mac's 17 points and six assists. Tonight the Rockets host an Atlanta team that hasn't been able to beat anyone lately and comes in with a five-game losing streak, the last three by double digits. Houston vs. South Carolina
The Liberty Bowl marks a revival of sorts for both Houston and South Carolina. The Cougars went from winless in 2001 to Conference USA champs in 2006 under coach Art Briles. The Gamecocks' turnaround has been no less impressive under Steve Spurrier and the team will be making its second straight bowl appearance with the old ball coach. Last year South Carolina blew a big lead against Missouri in the Independence Bowl before losing 38-31. That should be a welcome reminder to Houston, which came from behind in eight games this season. With Kevin Kolb at QB, the C-USA's all-time leader in total offense and threw for 27 TDs this year against only 3 INTs, the Cougars are always within striking distance. Even their three losses this year came by a combined eight points. This game should be closer than the Vegas line favoring South Carolina by 6 1/2 according to Dunkel, which has the Gamecocks favored by 5 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Houston (+6 1/2).
