        SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16

        Creighton at Fresno State
The Missouri Valley Conference has wreaked havoc for other conferences in the early going. Today looks to be Creighton's turn as the Blue Jays travel to Fresno State. Creighton is coming off a 73-67 win over higher-rated Xavier in which the Blue Jays defense held the Musketeers to 40.4 percent shooting while forcing 17 turnovers. Meanwhile the Bulldogs suffered their first defeat at UC-Santa Barbara (70-42) on the 6th as they shot just 28.3 percent from the field. A close call against lower-rated Montana State (82-77 in OT) three days later hardly looked much better. NFL

                        Sunday and Monday

Jets (7-6) @ Vikings (6-7)-AFC has dominated NFC of late, winning xx of last xx meetings, but Pennington will have to make plays for Jets to win, as Vikings haven't allowed more than 85 rushing yards in any game in second half of season; two of last four foes wound up with negative rushing yards. Jets are 4-2 on road, need to run table to make playoffs. Gang Green is 7-1 when they have positive turnover ratio, 0-5 when they don't. Vikings are just 2-3 in last five home games; they're 0-3 vs. AFC this season, scoring three TDs on 35 drives in those three games.

Browns (4-9) @ Ravens (10-3)-Baltimore is 6-1 since its bye, allowing four TDs on 40 drives in last four weeks, while Browns lost three of last four games; Ravens are 5-1 at home, winning last three (26-20/24-10/27-0)- they won 15-14 at Cleveland in Week 3, rallying from 14-3 halftime deficit. Cleveland is 2-4 on road, covering last three away games; they're one of three teams (Miami, Jets) that had opponent start at least one drive in their territory the last nine games. Last two Cleveland losses were 30-0/27-7. Last four Baltimore games stayed under the total.

Texans (4-9) @ Patriots (9-4)-Houston had hearts torn out in OT last week by QB they should have drafted, when Young ran 39 yards for winning TD in his homecoming game; Texans covered three of last four road games, but are 2-5 SU, with losses by 19, 28,6,4,15 pts. Patriots passed ball for only 66 net yards last week in Miami, as win streak ended at three- they're 1-5-1 as home favorite this season, with home wins by 2,10,4,7 pts. In their last seven games, Patriot opponents started 13 drives in NE territory, which isn't good, but they scored touchdowns on only two of those thirteen drives (!.78 ppd).

Dolphins (6-7) @ Bills (6-7)- Saban is 10-3 as Miami coach from Game 9 of season on (5-11 before that); Fish are 5-1 since bye, 2-0 on road, allowing eight TDs on last 68 drives- they let Taylor position himself last week. If that confused Brady, what will it to do Losman? Four of Buffalo's last five games were decided by three or less points; they covered last six games (4-2 SU) and are 3-3 at home, with wins by 5,14,3 pts. Bills won first meeting 16-6 in Miami, using 16-yard edge in average starting field position to keep Fish playing on longer field. Last four Buffalo games all went over the total.

Lions (2-11) @ Packers (5-8)-Green Bay is 1-3 in game following a win, with losses by 22,14,35 points; Pack won first meeting at Detroit, 31-24 (+7), averaging 9.4 yds/pass attempt, with two TD drives of 80+ yards, and 11-yard edge in average field position. Hard to describe how terrible Detroit; their backup QB is now playing some WR. Lions lost five games in row (1-4 vs. spread) with setbacks by 6,7,17,7,10 pts; they turned ball over 18 times (-10) in those five games. Pack is 1-1 as favorite this season. Six of last eight Green Bay games went over the total.

Steelers (6-7) @ Panthers (6-7)- Carolina longshot for playoffs after loss to Giants last week; Weinke threw 61 passes, as Panthers fell behind, got unbalanced. Steelers ran ball for 303 yards in win vs. Browns; they had ten days since that game, and allowed only one TD on 22 drives last two games, but those were at home. Steelers are 1-5 on road, and they were down 10-0 at half in game they won (at Cleveland). Carolina lost last three weeks and has been outscored in second half in 11 of 13 games. Five of Panthers' seven home games stayed under the total.

Buccaneers (3-10) @ Bears (11-2)- Could it be Grossman plays better on road (especially in a dome) away from harshest critics? Short week for Bears, who sewed up first round bye Monday night; they're 5-1 as home favorites this season, losing to Miami, but winning other five games by 27,31,33,31,10 points. Both teams that beat Bears held then to 13 points. Bucs are pathetic, losing six of last seven games (0-6-1 vs. spread); they're 1-5 as road dogs this season, losing all six games by 11,3,14,14,28,17 points. Eight of last ten Bear games went over the total.

Jaguars (8-5) @ Titans (6-7)-Young now 6-4 as starter, as Titans won last four games, covered last five, with last-minute comeback wins in each of last three weeks; last non-cover was 37-7 waxing at Jacksonville in Week 9, as Young was 15-36 passing with three picks, but boy have things changed since then. Titans are 13-26 on third down last two weeks, and scored 13 TDs on last 58 drives, after scoring 11 on first 88. Jax upset Indy last week, running ball for 375 yards; they're 2-4 on road and 0-3 in games decided by less than seven points, so if Titans can keep it close.

Redskins (4-9) @ Saints (8-5)-Washington is 1-5 on road, 0-5 as road dog, with losses by 17,16,14,24,3 points; they've been moving ball (381,415 TY last two games) but have been awful in red zone (one TD, three FG's on last six drives inside 20) which cost them in 21-19 loss to Eagles last week. Saints on serious roll after drilling Cowboys; they're 9-1 when they have less than three turnovers, are 7-2 vs. NFC, and 3-3 vs. spread as favorite, but they lost two of last three home games, and could have letdown after Dallas win, with trip to dreaded Meadowlands up next week.

Broncos (7-6) @ Cardinals (4-9)- Disparate results in recent weeks create value for contending Bronco squad, while also-ran Arizona spending another Christmas at home. Denver lost last four games (0-5 vs. spread in last five), allowing 31.3 pg during skid; meanwhile, Arizona won last two home games and three of four overall (4-0 vs. spread). Cards are 3-4 overall at home, losing by 2,3,1,17 points. Problem for Denver is they switched to rookie QB who is 6-24 on third down in his two starts. In their last four games, Broncos lost field position battle by 15,12,11,20 yards.

Eagles (7-6) @ Giants (7-6)-Pivotal game for both teams; if Dallas lost Saturday in Atlanta, winner here ties for NFC East lead. Garcia playing better than expected for Eagles, who scored 48 pts in last two games (five TD's/19 drives) and also got helped by huge pick-6 by their defense last week. Giants ended four-game skid in Carolina last week; they came back from 24-7 third quarter deficit in first meeting to beat Philly, 30-24 in OT, sending Eagles reeling to string of close losses. Philly is 0-2 on artificial turf this season (27-24 at Saints; 45-21 at Colts).

Rams (5-8) @ Raiders (2-11)-Two bad teams hook up here; Rams are traveling to coast off short work week, having lost seven of eight games, allowing 34,42 pts in last two games- they even made Rex Grossman look decent, not easy to do. Raiders lost six in row, scoring 14 or less pts in all six games- they failed to cover only game as favorite this season. NFC West teams have been awful road dogs all season. Bulger has bruised; even though Oakland is bad, their defense isn't, so could be another long day for #10. Over is 5-2-1 in Rams' last eight games.

Chiefs (7-6) @ Chargers (10-3)-San Diego won seven in row, scoring 35.3 pg, since losing 30-27 at Arrowhead in Week 7; in that game, KC scored TDs on all three trips in red zone, and on two of three drives that started in Bolt territory, while holding San Diego to 97 rushing yards. Chiefs lost last two games to jeopardize playoff chances: they're 2-4 on road, with losses by 3,38,3,3 points, so they've been close a lot. Chargers playing for home field thru AFC playoffs; Tomlinson already has TD record. In their last five games, San Diego scored 24 TDs on 54 drives, a tremendous percentage.

Bengals (8-5) @ Colts (10-3)- Colts need better field position; 13 of their last 21 drives started 80+ yards from goal line. Indy lost three of last four games, allowing 375 rushing yards, KR for TD and blocked punt at Jacksonville last week, but they're still 6-0 at home, with 1-point wins over Bills, Titans. Bengals are back in playoff chase, winning four games in row, outscoring last three foes 70-17. After scoring 10+ points in second half of first eight games, Colts have scored seven or less pts in second half in four of last five. Cincy defense much better since Charger loss, allowing two TD's on foes' last 30 drives.
