          Thursday's List of 13:

          Nobody asked me, but................

          13) Still trying to fathom how the Red Sox spent over $100M on one pitcher, who has never pitched in the major leagues.

          12) Bill James is a Red Sox advisor; he once wrote long essay on how young pitchers who accumulate lot of innings early in their career tend to flame out earlier than guys who get a later start. Matsuzaka has thrown over 1,300 innings at age 26, and they don't coddle pitchers in Japan, so he has decent amount of wear on his tires. Uh oh.

          11) Blue Jays offered Vernon Wells $126M for seven years, and he hasn't accepted yet. What exactly is he waiting for?

          10) Baseball has gone completely nuts with spending, except for the lower rung of teams, who must shake their heads how the salary gap between the haves and have nots is widening.

          9) Tampa Bay is trying to sign some Japanese 3B this week, but Evan Longoria, their top minor leaguer, is also a 3B, so why exactly are they going after this guy? And even if they get him, out of 38 games vs Boston and Bronx next season, how many would you expect them to win? 8? 10?12? 4?

          8) Sen. Arlen Spector is going after the NFL for not letting the cable industry sell the NFL Sunday Ticket; people who have lot of trees or tall buildings near their house can't get a signal from DirecTV. This will be an interesting showdown.

          7) If Roger Clemens signs with Bronx, they should sell team to Vince McMahon and get it over with, because they would have turned the whole thing into a WWE story line. Never in a million years would I sign a player and let him skip a certain number of games. I doubt the Red Sox are still interested.

          6) You've got to love the Phoenix Suns; they let the guy who owns the pizzeria across the street from their arena sit in on their draft meetings. When a new assistant coach asked one of the scouts who the guy was, the scout shrugged and said, "Oh, thats the pizza guy."

          5) Falcons' TE Alge Crumpler has seven TD catches this year, more than all the Falcon WRs combined, which is part of why Michael Vick struggles in the passing game.

          4) Lamar Hunt, owner of the Chiefs and man who coined the term "Super Bowl" passed away last night at age 74. Original owners of AFL teams paid $2,000 for their teams back in 1960; what do you think the Chiefs are worth now?

          3) In their last five games, Chargers scored 24 touchdowns on 54 possessions. Pretty impressive.

          2) Patriots are 4-3 at home, with no wins by more than 10 pts.

          1) My last thought on Matsuzaka: my dad was telling me how the Red Sox have pretty good rotation, "if this Japanese guy is good.". They spent $111M on a guy, and no one knows if he is any good!!!!! What a country. The Japanese must think we are a bunch of idiots. Maybe we are.
