NFL injury watch: Polamalu in, Lewis out

      Patriots hurting on defense

Reports out of New England today indicate safeties Rodney Harrison (shoulder) and Eugene Wilson (hamstring) as well as cornerback Asante Samuel (knee) will not play when the Patriots visit Green Bay as 5 ½-point favorites.

Chad Scott is expected to start in Samuel’s place, with James Sanders taking Wilson’s position and Artrell Hawkins filling in for Harrison. Backup wide receiver Troy Brown could also see time at cornerback.

Starting tight end Daniel Graham is questionable with a sore ankle, but is expected to start.

      Favre to start

Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre was bothered by ankle and groin problems all week, but will reportedly start against the Patriots.

“His groin really bothered him,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy told reporters after Friday’s practice.

      Carr ready to go

The Texans expect to have David Carr at quarterback when they host the Bills as 2 ½-point favorites. Carr has been bothered by a sore right shoulder, but practiced Friday and appeared healthy enough to start today.

Starting fullback Jameel Cook (knee) is also expected to start, as are starting defensive ends Mario Williams (foot) and Anthony Weaver (knee).

      Bills running back out

Buffalo will be without starting running back Willis McGahee when it hosts Houston. McGahee reportedly has broken ribs, and will be replaced by backup running back Anthony Thomas.

      Ray Lewis out for Ravens

The Ravens won’t have Ray Lewis (back) in the lineup when they host Atlanta as 3 ½-point favorites.

Bart Scott is reportedly set to take Lewis’ spot in the lineup.

      Polamalu ready to go

The Steelers expect safety Troy Polamalu to start when they visit the Browns today.

Polamalu suffered a concussion in last week’s game with New Orleans, and was originally thought to be unavailable for the Cleveland tilt. It is the sixth concussion he has suffered (three in college, two in high school), but Polamalu isn’t losing any sleep over it.

“It was no big deal,” Polamalu told reporters. “I feel good enough to go.”

The Steelers are 3 ½-point favorites in Cleveland.

      Green returns for Chiefs

Trent Green returns to the Chiefs lineup today when they host Oakland as 9-point favorites. Green takes over at quarterback for Damon Huard, who returns to the sidelines after eight consecutive starts.

The Chiefs could be without starting tight end Tony Gonzalez (shoulder), giving Jason Dunn the start at the position. Even if Gonzalez suits up for this one, he is expected to see limited action.

      Brooks is back

Aaron Brooks is expected to start at quarterback for the Raiders today. Brooks has not played since Sept. 11 because of a strained pectoral muscle.

Raiders starting running back LaMont Jordan has a sore back, but is expected to play against Kansas City. Starting fullback Zack Crockett is bothered by a knee injury, but is also expected to suit up today.

      Berrian questionable

Early media reports this morning indicate the Bears will start Mark Bradley ahead of Bernard Berrian today when they visit the Jets as 6 ½-point favorites.

Berrian is expected to be a game-time decision, and if he does play he is likely to see limited action, according to various media reports.

      Alexander returns?

Reports indicate Shaun Alexander will likely see time at running back for the Seahawks today when they travel to San Francisco as 3 ½-point favorites.

Starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck remains out of the lineup, meaning Seneca Wallace will start again at QB.

      Moss out

The Redskins don’t expect receiver Santana Moss to play today due to an ailing hamstring.

Antwaan Randle El is expected to take his place in the starting lineup.

Washington is a 3-point underdog at Tampa Bay. Droughns out for underdog Browns

Running back Reuben Droughns is expected to be inactive when the Cleveland Browns host the Steelers as 4-point underdogs today.

Droughns has been wearing a protective boot on his sprained foot this week, and has not recovered enough to play in today’s contest. The Browns had been listed at +3 ½ for most of this week, but news of his status seems to be pushing the odds up at most online books.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up Rivalry Saturday:

                  13) When Ohio State gave Troy Smith his scholarship, it was last one they gave out that year, so not like they had any idea he was going to be this good.

                  12) Maryland coach Friedgen played ball at Maryland; BC's coach O'Brien went to Navy. Both guys were recruited to the college of their choice by assistant coach named Lee Corso.

                  11) If polls are going penalize teams for losses late in season, why should Ohio State-Michigan be played in November?

                  10) Amazing coaching job at Rice, where Owls won five in a row, are bowl eligible after being 1-10 last year. Not only have Owls won five in row, they were underdog in four of them, and only 3-point favorite yesterday.

                  9) Rough day for Cinderalla Saturday, as Rutgers, Maryland and Wake Forest all lost badly.

                  8) Boston College had two defensive TDs vs Terps before the BC offense hit the field.

                  7) What exactly is the design on Michigan's helmets? I know Delaware used to have same design, with a lighter shade of blue, but all these years, and I don't know what it is.

                  6) You get the idea Mike Shula might not have the best of off seasons. He probably needs to win big next year.

                  5) LSU was down 20-14 with 0:30 left vs Ole Miss; they score a TD, but the PAT is blocked, forcing OT. Strange how Ole Miss always plays well at Baton Rouge, but not that often in any of their other road games. LSU won the game in OT.

                  4) When he was Ohio State's coach, John Cooper was 2-10-1 vs Michigan; ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit was Buckeyes' QB for the 13-13 tie in his only season as Ohio State's starting QB.

                  3) Total yardage in TCU-San Diego State games;TCU 623, San Diego State 88. Rough first year for Coach Long, but how in the name of Marshall Faulk did Aztecs get so bad?

                  2) If I were Steve Spurrier, I'd say no to Miami and stay in Columbia; he's just about finished cleaning up mess that Lou Holtz built at South Carolina; why does he need to clean up an even bigger mess?

                  1) Life is simple if USC wins the next two games. This get bit more complex if they lose, especially with Arkansas, Florida both having two tough games left. I think Michigan being in clubhouse with one loss blocks Notre Dame from title game, since Wolverines hammered ND, 47-21.
