    SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 12

    Houston at Jacksonville
Inserting QB David Garrard into the starting lineup is once again paying off for Jacksonville. After the Jaguars lost to Houston (27-7), coach Jack Del Rio decided to rest Byron Leftwich's bum ankle and start Garrard, who went 4-1 last season when he replaced an injured Leftwich. The result this time has been a road win over Philadelphia (13-3) and last week's pounding of Tennesssee (37-7) in which Garrard threw three TD passes. This weekend the Jags will try to exact some revenge on Houston, which has lost all four of its road games this season. Covering the Vegas line of 10 looks doable in this one according to Dunkel, which has Jacksonville favored by 18 1/2. Dunkel Pick: Jacksonville (-10). Here are all of this week's games.

              Some NFL tidbits:

New England has not lost back-to-back games since December 2002. That's a span of 57 games. The record is 60 by San Francisco (1995-99). The Titans and Jets beat the Patriots in Weeks 15 and 16 in 2002. The Patriots will play host to the Jets this weekend.

The Eagles under Andy Reid have never lost a game that followed a bye week (7-0). Philadelphia was off in Week 9 and will play host to Washington this week.

If the Colts defeat the Bills this weekend, they will become the first team in NFL history to have back-to-back 9-0 starts.

Washington became the first team in NFL history to score exactly 22 points in three consecutive games (Dallas, Tennessee, Indianapolis).

The Browns were the only team in Week 9 to lead at halftime and lose.

                2006 Week 10 NFL

Chiefs (5-3) @ Dolphins (2-6)- KC won, covered three in a row since 45-7 loss at Heinz, running ball for 170.3 ypg during win streak; they scored four offensive TDs in each of last three games, with five of the 12 TDs on drives of 80+ yards. Miami came off bye and stunned Bears in Chicago, running ball for 161 yards and forcing six turnovers; will they make another second half run, like they did in '05? LY, Chiefs ran ball for 185 yards, outgained Fish 462-286 in Week 7 win on this field (30-20 , +1.5). Over is 5-0-1 in last six Chief games, 3-0 in last three for Miami.

Texans (2-6) @ Jaguars (5-3)- Third straight road game for Houston team that drilled Jags 27-7 at home three weeks ago (+9), outgaining Jax 349-220, holding Leftwich to 4.1 yds/pass; Garrard is new Jax QB, even though Leftwich is well enough to play. Jags won his last two starts, mainly because defense allowed one TD on 22 drives- they have field position edges of +16/+19 in two games. Houston's defense is playing better, holding last three foes to 285 or less yards. Texans are 0-4 on road, losing by 19,28 ,6,4 pts. Four of last five Houston games stayed under the total.

Chargers (6-2) @ Bengals (4-4)-Rats starting to jump off ship in Cincy, with Johnson bitching about his touches, Henry not trying for catch on Hail Mary on final play last week. You need character during hard times, and Bengals little short on character guys' they've also run ball for less than 100 yds in five of last six games, converted only 16 of last 61 on third down. 25 of their last 55 drives started 80+ yards from end zone; defense isn't creating short field drives. Chargers won four of last five games, scoring 36.6 ppg in last four- four of their last five games went over total.

Browns (2-6) @ Falcons (5-3)- AFC is 12-4 vs. the NFC last three weeks, but slowish Browns lost 34-17 in their only other game on carpet this year, and are 1-3 on road, losing by 17,8,7 points- they beat Raiders for only road win. In last four games, Frye averaged 3.5/3.4/4.8/4.3 yds/pass, not good. Falcons are 2-3 vs. spread as favorite in '06, 3-1 SU at home, winning by 11,22,3 points; Atlanta is 4-0 when they score more than 14 points, 1-3 when they don't. Browns allowed 26.8 ppg on road, giving up 10 TDs on 48 drives. Falcons gave up 3+ offensive TDs in each of last four games.

Ravens (6-2) @ Titans (2-6)-McNair returns to Tennessee with Raven squad that scored 30.5 ppg in winning both games since Billick took over play-calling, but most of credit for those wins go to defense that forced eight TOs (six INTs, +7). Billick's renewed emphasis on running ball should work vs. Titan defense giving up 174.6 rushing yds/game in last seven games. Tennessee completing just 46.8% of passes in Young's five starts; they're 13 for last 53 on third down (24.5%). Last year, Ravens lost here 25-10 in Week 2, starting 11 of 14 drives 80+ yards from goal line
(-22 in field position), going 3/out on 10 of 14 drives.

Bills (3-5) @ Colts (8-0)-Indy off wins at Denver, Foxboro, so letdown possible here vs. Bills' squad that was beat Packers last week, despite being outgained 427-184- it was Bills' first win in last four games. Buffalo allowed 6,12,10 pts in their three wins, an average of 21 peg in their losses, three of which are by eight or less pts. Bills are 4-4 vs. spread this year (2-1 as road dog); they're +9 in turnovers when they cover, -12 when they don't. Colts are 2-1-1 as home favorite, winning by 19,7,1,14 pts. Four of last five Buffalo games stayed under the total.

Saints (6-2) @ Steelers (2-6)-Pitt lost six of last seven games, allowing 34 ppg during three-game skid; they're 0-5 when they allow more than 17 points, a figure Saints topped in every game so far. NO is 3-1 on road, losing only 21-18 at Carolina (+7); they're 4-0 vs. spread as dog this season, but have run ball 49 times for just 84 yards in last two games. Steeler offense has gained 449+ yards in three of last four games, but they've thrown seven picks in last two games (-9 TO ratio). Last four New Orleans games and three of last four Pitt games went over total.

Redskins (3-5) @ Eagles (4-4)- Philly are 0-3 since they beat Cowboys, losing last three games before their bye; they're 3-0 if they score more than 24 pts, 1-2 if they score exactly 24, 0-2 if they score less- they're 2-2 at home, beating Packers (31-9) Dallas (38-24). All four Philly wins are by 14+ points. Redskins have zero takeaways in last four games (-3 TO ratio); they're 1-3 on road, losing at Dallas (27-10), Giants (19-3) and Colts (36-22) (0-3 as road dog). In their last three games, Philly's been outscored 31-3 in first half; that said, five of last seven Eagle games still went over total.

Packers (3-5) @ Vikings (4-4)-Minnesota lost last two games, scoring total of 10 points; in their last seven games, Vikings scored six offensive TDs on 75 drives; they are 3-0 when scoring more than 16 pts, 1-1 if they score exactly 16, 0-3 if they score less. Vikes turned ball over seven times in last two games, after having total of eight giveaways in first six games. Packers allowed 23+ pts in every game but their home win vs. Arizona (31-14). Pack is 1-1 on carpet this year, gaining 827 TY in 31-24 win at Detroit, 24-10 loss at Buffalo last week.

49ers (3-5) @ Lions (2-6)-Niners upset Minnesota at home last week, but they're 0-3 on road (1-2 as road dog) losing at Arizona (34-27), Chiefs (41-0) and Chicago (41-10); in game following their first two wins, 49ers lost to Eagles (38-24), Chargers (48-19)- they gained only 133 total yards in win last week (outrushed 135-42). Lion offense is better under Martz, scoring 20+ pts in five of last six games, but they're 0-1 as favorite this year (24-31 vs. Packers, -7); in upset win vs. Falcons last week, Lions still allowed 165 yards on ground- they've allowed 386 yards on 68 carries (5.7 per carry) their last two games.

Jets (4-4) @ Patriots (6-2)-Only one of Jets' four losses (41-0 at Jax) is by more than seven points; they lost 24-17 (+6) at home to Patriots in Week 2, as Pats went out to 17-0 halftime lead, then withstood furious Gang Green rally down stretch. Jets were outrushed 147-51 in first meeting, but converted 11 of 18 on third down to make game tight. Loss of Harrison hurts Patriot defense that hadn't allowed more than 17 points before loss to Colts last week. New England is 0-3-1 as home favorite this season, with wins by 2,10 points and losses to Denver, Indy. Seven of eight Jet games went over total.

Broncos (6-2) @ Raiders (1-7)-Oakland's defense is better (gave up three TDs on last 44 drives) but offense is so awful (283 total yards in last two games, no TDs on last 22 drives) that team still struggles, though they did win last two home games. Broncos shut Raiders down 13-3 at home in Week 6 Sunday nighter, outrushing Raiders 144-85 (Oakland had 13 penalties for 95 yds in game). Broncos just faced colts, Steelers, so in normal case, you'd expect letdown here, but Shanahan hates Al Davis (was stiffed out of $250K when Raiders fired him as HC) so Broncos never take this rival lightly.

Rams (4-4) @ Seahawks (5-3)-Still no Alexander/Hasselbeck for Seattle, which beat Rams 30-28 in Week 6 nailbiter (Hawks trailed 21-7 at half, kicked FG on last play to win), game Rams yet to recover from (lost last three, allowing 33 ppg). Rams win when they get takeaways (14 in four wins (+12)), lose when they don't (two in four losses (-5)); over is 3-1-1 in their last five games. Seattle has five TDs on last 35 drives; they're 3-1 at home, losing to Vikings (31-13) but winning other three by 11,12,16 points. Last stand for Rams to contend in very weak division- they're 2-2 on road this season.

Cowboys (4-4) @ Cardinals (1-7)-Third week in row on road for Dallas, which is 3-0 vs. spread after loss this season; they allowed 14 or less points in their four wins, an average of 30 ppg in losses. Romo is good QB; Cowboys converted on 31 of last 57 third down plays (54.4%) so they're moving chains, but key drops and blocked FGs killed them in DC last week. Cards haven't won since Week 1, allowed 26.4 ppg in last five games; they're 1-3 at home, with losses by combined total of six points. In last two games, Leinart has completed only 40.3% of passes. Team held players' only meeting this week, to air differences and to try to get on same page.

Bears (7-1) @ Giants (6-2)- Bears suffered first loss last week; for second time in last three games, they turned ball over six times. Chicago defense had 18 sacks in first five games, has only three in last three. In three road games, Bears have only two TDs on 34 drives (they have 19 on 58 at home). Red-hot Giants 5-0 since their bye, winning home games by 16,14,4 points, but injuries at DE have Big Blue very thin on line. Five of Bears' seven wins are by 26+ points. NY was -1 in turnovers in both losses; they're 4-0 in games where turnovers were even. Four of last five Giant games stayed under total.

Buccaneers (2-6) @ Panthers (4-4)-Carolina continues to struggle on third down (11-46 in last two games, both losses); they've been outscored in second half of every game TY (107-42 for year, 35-0 in last two games). Panthers covered one of five as favorite this year, failing to cover in first meeting at Tampa (26-24, -3) despite leading 17-0 in first half. Bucs outgained Carolina 350-209 in that game, as Simms played gamely, despite being ill (spleen removed after game). Bucs lost last two games, by 14,17 points, converting just six for last 30 on third down; they've had zero takeaways in four of last five games.

                  Second Round of Playoffs

Toronto @ Montreal-- Argos lost two of three vs Montreal this year, losing 31-7 on road in Week 8, then beating them 31-6 two weeks later, before losing season finale 24-20 at home two wks ago. Toronto won four of last five road games- they had to play last week (edged Winnipeg 31-27) while Alouettes had day off. Montreal actually lost four of their last five home games, losing 8 of last 11 games after 7-0 start.

Saskatchewan @ British Columbia-- Lions won 11 of their last 13 games, but they lost three of four vs Saskatchewan this yr, with Riders winning last three meetings (45-28BC in opener, 32-24S in Week 2, then Riders also won 28-25/23-20). Riders pulled upset at McMahon last week; they're on road fourth week in row, but they covered four games in row (3-1SU). Lions are 4-2 vs spread in their last six home games.

                        Sunday's List of 13:

                        Wrapping up college football Saturday

                        13) I never thought I'd live to see the day where ABC took a Wake Forest-Florida State game off the air, because Deacons were winning by too many points. FSU maybe, but Wake?

                        12) Deacon fans better enjoy this magical run, because with every game you win, Wake's chances of keeping its coach beyond this season get less and less.

                        11) Halftime score: Georgia 30, Auburn 7. Go figure.

                        10) Wisconsin's offensive line averages 6-6.5, taller than any offensive line in the NFL.

                        9) Clemson's orange/purple ensemble has to go; they look a lot like the blackjack dealers' outfits at Excalibur in Vegas.

                        8) Rice won its last four games, all as underdog, scoring 38 ppg; they won one game all last year, a huge improvement.

                        7) Kentucky got its sixth win and will go bowling; they host a Sun Belt team next week, so they'll likely finish 7-5, saving the job of Coach Brooks.

                        6) Texas Tech led both Texas, Oklahoma at half this season, but got outscored 31-0 in second half of the two games.

                        5) At 8:07 of third quarter, Oregon kicked a FG, ending a 77-0 scoing run by Trojans, that started in their loss at Corvallis.

                        4) Ducks' first TD came when the replay official overruled an apparent Oregon TD; Coach Bellotti then challenged replay official and the reversal was reversed, restoring Oregon's TD. Had never seen that happen before.

                        3) Pitt has now lost three games in row, with Louisville,West Virginia on deck; an epic collapse from 6-1 to 6-6 is likely, and with a senior QB. Panthers'defense got very tired at UConn.

                        2) Maryland's five ACC wins are by a total of thirteen points.

                        1) Next Saturday is the best college football day of the year, including New Year's Day. Michigan-Ohio State, Cal-USC are the highlight games on a great rivalry day.

Good morning, guys, and good luck today!!!

Well, it's gonna be a while before roundball and hockey start coming out. While we wait, here's some of the fun reading we didn't get to include over the last two days:

                          Saturday's List of 13:
                          Nobody asked me, but.............

                          13) So JD Drew voided his contract, which would have paid him $33M over next three years. Why would he do this, or more accurately, why does scumweasel agent Boras do this?

                          12) Drew is 31, hit .280 this year, but has never played in 110+ games in back/back seasons- since he played in 146 this year, he's due for an injury or three. Who would give this guy more than $11M? OK, other than Isiah Thomas?

                          11) Drew is giving back $33M despite a career postseason batting average of .180, with 14 strikeouts in 61 ABs. Another Boras client who's great in the clutch.

                          10) Drew has knocked in 80+ runs in a season twice in his career. Dodgers are loaded with good young outfield prospects. Drew might have made their day; now they have more cash to throw at Barry Zito.

                          9) Zito, by the way, is also represented by Boras; is there a coincidence that Boras just freed up $11M of the Dodgers' money?

                          8) Does this guy Boras sleep? Or does he have operatives who do that for him? How can he possible represent so many high profile clients?

                          7) A's made playoffs this year with a payroll around $60M. Now, the Red Sox are rumored to be giving a Japanese team $35-40M just to negotiate with this ace pitcher. Then they have to sign him, and scumweasel Boras is this guy's agent too. Sounds like a great system baseball has going.

                          6) Just so we're clear, the Red Sox aren't paying the Japanese pitcher $35M, they're paying the Seibu Lions $35M, just for the right to negotiate with Boras on a contract for additional money. If they don't have a deal within 30 days, then the whole thing is off, and the pitcher goes back to Seibu for the '07 season.

                          5) You think handicapping football is easy? Fresno State (-11), Colorado (-8) and San Diego State (-7.5) are all favored this week, despite having just one win each this season.

                          4) Mike Davis era at UAB got off to bad start, as Blazers got drilled by Washington State, 71-60. Hard to go from the fast style of Mike Anderson to Davis' more traditional approach.

                          3) Southern Utah 76, Utah 73. Bad news for Coach Giacoletti, who hasn't done much since inheriting Majerus' program in Salt Lake City. Losing to the Thunderbirds isn't good.

                          2) With 2:23 left, UConn led Quinnipiac 48-46, before Huskies scored last five points of game, but Calhoun has lot of work to do before Big East opener vs West Va on December 30.

                          1) Northwestern State, which beat Iowa in NCAAs in March, opened this season by thumping Utah State, 88-71. Good for Coach McConathy, a genuinely good guy we had chance to talk with a little bit this summer in Florida.

                          Friday's List of 13:
Random thoughts as weekend is here

                          13) If the NBA wanted to change its basketball, why didn't they enlist the five top scorers from last year, and the five top assist men, and get their input? Wouldn't this have made sense? Instead, they have ball the players don't seem to like.

                          12) When was last time an NFL team was 8-0, and was an underdog in Games 7 and 8?

                          11) Spurs' Fabricio Oberto was 11-11 from floor Wednesday; the record for most hoops in game without missing is 18, set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1967; he also has the second and third-most hoops without missing. Wilt shot 68% from floor that season.

                          10) In switching from Rick Adelman to Eric Musselman as head coach, Sacramento goes from a free-wheeling offensive team to more of a defensive club; not necessarily better or worse, just a different style. Less fun to watch, though.

                          9) I think the NBA would be better with a 64-game regular season; easier on players, coaches and more time for skill development, which would raise the quality of play. This will never happen, but it would be a good idea.

                          8) Mike Bibby is 266th NBA player to score 10,000 points, but he's never been on an All-Star team. Go figure.

                          7) Is it a little weird that the Louisville QB coach screams at his brother, the starting QB, like he's Robert Duvall in movie The Great Santini. It just doesn't look good.

                          6) Rutgers has a kicker named Ito; wonder if he's a relative of our favorite judge, Lance Ito (of OJ trial fame). Wouldn't it be odd if Ito wound up kicking for the Bills, OJ's old team?

                          5) Rutgers-Louisville proved to be terrific showcase for the Big East- wouldn't surprise me if all eight teams in league got some benefit from that game, as far as national respect and a recruiting bump.

                          4) For first time in 16 years, Florida State won't be playing in a January bowl game.

                          3) Not only will Miami Hurricanes be playing with very heavy hearts Saturday after the death of a teammate, they're starting a new QB, as Kyle Wright broke his passing thumb last week. Very difficult situation for everyone involved.

                          2) The evil Larry Brown got himself fired from the Knicks, then not only wanted the $41 million left on his contract, but an additional $12M in damages. Not so fast, as it was ruled this week that the quirky little man would receive "only" $18.5M of the $41M.

                          1) So Brown had a bad day and still brought home a check for $18.5M. Not bad pay for doing nothing. Anyone who hires him from here on in, though, is an idiot.

                            Western Michigan vs. Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh's seven-footer Aaron Gray passed up the NBA this season because of his belief that the Panthers are a national-championship caliber team. The Panthers will have to find a way to replace leading scorer Carl Krauser, but coach Jamie Dixon has a lot of talent to chose from including senior forward Levon Kendall and junior guard Ronald Ramon. Today the Panthers open up against Western Michigan, which went 14-17 a year ago. Dunkel has Pitt favored by 20, covering the Vegas line of 16. Dunkel Pick: Pittsburgh (-16). Here are all of today's games.
