Toledo at Northern Illinois
Toledo went through a four-game stretch where it could do little right. The Rockets' downfall began with a 45-3 thumping at the hands of Pitt on September 30 and included a 42-20 loss to Central Michigan and 40-14 defeat at Kent State. Overall the Rockets were outscored during the stretch by a whopping 144-50. But Toledo finally showed signs of life last weekend against Akron. Jalen Parmele led a solid rushing attack with 145 yards and the defense recorded two INTs and four sacks in a 35-20 win. Tonight the Rockets visit Northern Illinois, which has faired better than Toledo this season although not spectacularly. The Huskies have gone 2-2 in their last four games with the wins coming against lower-rated Temple and by only three points against Miami (OH). While the Huskies are clearly the favorite at home tonight, the Vegas line of 11 1/2 looks a little high according to Dunkel, which has Northern Illinois favored by 7 1/2. Maryland looks to erase the memory of last year's disappointing season in which the Terps went 19-13 (8-8 in the ACC) and earned only an NIT bid. That is far below the standards that coach Gary Williams has set in College Park. The Terps open their 2006-07 campaign tonight against Hampton in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
