  • Yankees Pick-Up Sheffield Option

I like Sheffield as an offesive talent. I think, when healthy, he is on eof the most dangerous hitters in baseball. But why would anyone pay him $13 million at his age, coming off an injury and knowing he can be a malcontent? I am surprised the Yankees picked up the option and I am equally surprised that there are teams interested in trading for him at that number. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out....

NEW YORK -- Gary Sheffield was told Wednesday that the New York Yankees will pick up his $13 million option for next season, according to a newspaper report.

    Sheffield

Sheffield said he was hoping to test the free-agent market and get another three-year contract, USA Today said in a story on its Web site.

"This will not work, this will not work at all," Sheffield told the newspaper. "I don't want to play first base a year for them. I will not do that."
Sheffield, sidelined from May 29 to Sept. 22 with an injured left wrist that required surgery, hit .298 with six homers and 25 RBIs in 39 games this season. He played first base for the first time in his major league career after he returned in September.

"I don't know what they're [Yankees] going to do," Sheffield said. "Maybe they picked it up just to trade me. If they do that, if I just [go] to a team for one year, there's going to be a problem."
A message was left by The Associated Press seeking comment from Sheffield's agent, Rufus Williams.

It's possible the Yankees are positioning themselves to trade Sheffield, as several teams are reportedly interested in a player of his type. The New York Daily News reported Wednesday that at least a half-dozen teams -- the Angels, Orioles, Cubs, Giants, Astros and Rangers -- are in the market for a power-hitting corner outfielder, and that doesn't include the Red Sox and Mets, who could also use the help. The Yankees can now prevent Sheffield from going to such rivals without getting anything in return.

One GM reportedly called Yankees GM Brian Cashman last week about Sheffield. "To be honest," he said, "I was kind of put off, leaving me to believe he's got at least a couple of teams really pushing him hard [for Sheffield]."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

the thing is no one is gonna take cancerfield for that kinda coin. nyy is either gonna have to do 1 of 2 things.

1 trade him for a couple prospects

2 trade him for someone decent and eat 1/2 his salary

There is no room for him on that roster... it was a mistake to go after him and not Vlad a few years back... with Vlad you had a future... with Sheff you had an ego that would not fit well with that team...

They will trade him away to someone who is desperate and in order to get something decent eat up around $6.5 million of that salary.

This is what it all boils down to.. the yanks picked the option up so they can trade him.. that was a brilliant move by the yanks.. this statement right here is the entire reason as to why they did this..

Why on earth would they pick up his option and then trade him and eat part of the salary? If thats not the stupidest thing you have ever heard of than everyone needs their heads checked and please do not tell me they need to get something for him because even if he left they wouldve been compensated with a draft pick.

Yankees have no regard for cash and are absolutely stupid with the moves they make......Cashman needs to be smoked, IMMEDIATELY

                        PEACE

Even if they want to keep him it can work out.. Giambi can play 1B.. Let Sheffield DH.. IF Abreu gets hurt then you already have a player that has played that position before in Sheffield.. IF you want to give Abreu the day off boom insert Sheffield and IMO you lose NOTHING as far as offensive stats go.. If you want to put sheffield in the field for the hell of it let Abreau DH.. Simple as that..

pay him 13 million to trade him to someone who cant haunt the Yankees down the road?

Im sorry but c'mon please think this out....

Honestly if they keep him I think they are better off.....he can play some OF, some 1B and some DH enough to get him 500AB's and he will put the numbers up

But please do not tell me signing him just to trade him is a shrewd move......if a team knows that is the case they wont get shit for him anyways

                            PEACE
