I think this is one of the worst and poorly balanced St. Louis teams in years, and in this instance they are very lucky that they were in such a weak division.
Even if they should defeat the Mets(which I doubt), in my mind they are not a team worthy of playing in the WS this year based on their mediocrity during the season and when compared to some of the really good Cards teams in past history which did go on to the playoffs.
Yeah I know the same can be said about a lot of other mediocre teams not only in baseball but in other sports also, but for me the Cards being in the playoffs this year is one of the drawbacks of the playoff system.
ps of course you should root for them, because they are "your" team;I am just trying to tell you how I feel about them as I would about any team in any sport which I don't think is worthy of being there.

If the Red Sox were in same position as Cards, I might in all honesty think differently(like you) since my emotions are tied up with them;its always easy to criticize a team when it is not YOUR OWN team which is the one which made the playoffs not because they are good but because of the structure of the system.
