btw...here is what the Chicago papers said about the candidates.
THE CANDIDATES
JOE GIRARDI
Considered the favorite in the mind of new team president John McDonough and Cubs fans who want one of their own in the job. Voted Sporting News National League Manager of the Year in balloting among his peers after first-year run with the Marlins.
LOU PINIELLA
Considered the favorite among the baseball people in the Cubs' front office. With the Yankees out of the picture, veteran manager covets Cubs job. He brings a wealth of experience -- and success -- unmatched by the other candidates.
BOB BRENLY
Cubs broadcaster will get a formal interview with Jim Hendry in Arizona this week, but he is considered a distant third in this horse race. Also will get an interview with the Giants, but is considered a long shot for that job, as well.
BRUCE BOCHY
Coveted by the Cubs, but the Padres are standing behind their manager, who has a year left on his contract. "Right now, Bruce Bochy is our manager," general manager Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "We expect him to be our manager."
I wouldn't mind that at all. I'd love to see Lou get in there in "whip" those bastards into shape
Same thing we said when Dusty Baker and Don Baylor took the helm ... this organization will not allow a manager to manage ... Popeye was the last manager to stand up to these idiots ... jmho

right on the money Spark.........Pinella will never be hired.....He would show the public what they really are............IDIOTS...................i wish some billionaire cub fan would by the cubs........Are their any out there?????????? or are we just broke bleacher bumbs??????
Piniella is obviously the most qualified and he clearly wants the job----almost lusting publicly after it.
Girardi is still the likeliest but may be blackballed for showing up his owner in Florida. Girardi did a great job with the Marlins but the fact of the matter is that a company owner shouldn't have to put up with being publicly told off by the hired help.
I'll guess Girardi with Piniella my backup. But the Cubs are so stupids nothing would surprise me.
I hope they take Lou but I know the Trib is not more than likely going to throw a lot of money into the manager. So I think they go with Joe. I would be happy with Lou or Joe so it's a win win as far as I see it.
I would give Ernie Banks a chance. He is only 75;if Paterno can coach at 80 and Hugh Hefner at 80 can still (need I go further?), then why not Give Ernie a chance at returning this team to respectability?

Saavy, Ernie would want to own them not manage them ...
On ESPN radio today in Chicago, Tim Kurkjian said the Piniella would end up managing the Cubs. He said Piniella wanted the job, and the Cubs wanted him. He also said Girardi didn't interview well.

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it ....... I know Spark doesn't want Lou but i TRULY think it is a GREAT MOVE by the Cubs.
It can't be any worse (imo) and i would be excited to get Lou in that dugout! Dusty & Lou are VERY different (imo) and i simply can't see the connection that has been made between the 2!
