              Dunkel Index - Baseball

              Dunkel Index – MLB

              WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4

              Oakland at Minnesota
The absence of Francisco Liriano in the Twins' rotation becomes more stark today as Ron Gardenhire must turn to Boof Bonser to start Game Two after the unexpected loss by Johan Santana yesterday. Bonser was sent back to the minors twice this season, but responded down the stretch by going 4-1 in September. Still the inexperience has to be a concern going up against veteran Esteban Loaiza, who bounced back from an awful April (0-3, 8.35) to finish with a decent season (11-9, 4.89). Oakland looks like a nice play getting the run line in this one according to Dunkel, which has Minnesota favored by only 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Oakland (+1 1/2).

Game 907-908: LA Dodgers at NY Mets

                    Oakland and Minnesota: Minnesota -134

Wasting a Johan Santana start is one of the biggest sins in baseball and after the Minnesota Twins committed this transgression yesterday, they find themselves down 0-1 to the Oakland Athletics.

The Twins will look to repent this afternoon with right-hander Boof Bonser taking the hill for Game 2. They will have to provide better run support if they hope to even the series.

The Twins went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday, scoring only two runs for their ace. They are 13 games over .500 when Santana starts and now must figure out how to steal two wins without him.

Minnesota’s main objective on defense is stopping Oakland slugger Frank Thomas, who crushed two home runs in Game 1. Thomas has been the A’s best bat in the past two months, but is not a threat on the base paths. Minnesota may resort to pitching around the MVP candidate, forcing a free-swinging Oakland offense that ranked 25th in the league to play small ball.

"You`ve got to be careful with him," catcher Joe Mauer to the San Francisco Chronicle. "But he hit some pitches that were pretty good pitches. Even when you`re careful with him, he still might get you. Right now, we`ve got to figure out how to get him out."

Los Angeles at New York: Los Angeles +116

The New York Mets should be more concerned about the Dodgers starter rather than worrying about who their own hurler will be for today’s Game 1 of the NLDS.

The Mets have Orlando Hernandez scheduled to start, but he has an injured calf which required an MRI yesterday and he`s currently listed as questionable.

Los Angeles will send playoff tested Derek Lowe to the mound today riding a two-month hot streak, during which the right-hander has gone 8-1 with a 2.39 ERA. Lowe is undefeated in his last 10 starts and has a three-game playoff win streak dating back to 2004.

“Everybody knows Derek Lowe. This is his time of the year. The playoff season is his time of the year,” says Dodgers manager Grady Little “For us, our playoff season started on Aug. 1. He stepped it up. He`s been outstanding. We don`t know where we`d be without him.”

Lowe has a 4-4 career playoff record with a 3.05 ERA in 62 postseason innings.

Detroit at New York: New York -217

It’s youth versus experience in tonight’s Game 2 of the AL Division Series with rookie sensation Justin Verlander facing off against Yankees veteran Mike Mussina. This is bad news for Tigers backers because experience usually pays off in the postseason.

Mussina not only has the edge in playoff games, making 21 postseason appearances for a record of 7-7 and an ERA of 3.30, but has also been stellar against Detroit throughout his career. The 37-year-old has a 17-5 record against the Tigers, including three straight wins in his most recent meetings with Detroit.

Mussina will be making his sixth playoff run as a Yankee, but is still without a World Series ring. The 16-year veteran is hungry for a championship and knows the importance of going up 2-0 against the Tigers.

"I always thought the second game was a pretty big deal," said Mussina. "But after Game 2, there`s three scenarios. You`re either up two, down two, or even. "A lot of times in these series, if it`s two games to nothing, one way or the other, you feel you`re in a pretty bad spot. So I think the second game is a big deal."
