Twins in dire straits with Santana losing Tuesday; with pitching duel in Game 1, would expect little more fireworks here. Loaiza is 0-2, 10.67 in his last three road starts, and gave up six runs back in April loss at Metrodome, tossing four innings in 6-5 Twin win. Rookie Bonser is 4-1, 2.63 in his last six starts; Twins won seven of his last nine starts. He lost 4-0 to Zito back in June.
Odd contrast here, as Mets basically clinched division in April, while Dodgers fought tooth-and-nail for six months to get into this tournament. Dodgers are 10-3 in Lowe's last thirteen starts (2-0, 2.25 in last three). OHernandez (3-2, 2.17 in last six starts) strained calf Tuesday, but Glavine can't pitch until Game 2, so guess Maine gets start for Met team if El Duque can't go. NY has as many pitching issues as any favorite in recent memory. That is what happens when all your good starters are 35+. Anyway, Mets are 10-2 in last dozen Maine starts, but one of losses was 5-0 to Dodgers on this field September 8. Trachsel lost three of his last four starts, was routed by LA Sept 10, so doubt he goes
Verlander is 1-2, 9.00 in his last three starts; Detroit lost six of his last nine starts. he gave up six runs in five IP at home vs Bronx in game Tigers later won June 1 (7-6). Bronx won five of last seven Mussina starts. Getting swept by Royals last weekend doesn't exactly make you optimistic Detroit can hang in this series. Just so you know, Mussina actually had complete game win May 31 in Detroit, 6-1, tossing 101 pitches. I'd rather see Angels or the White Sox opposing the evil Bronx team here, but no such luck.
