    Ncaaf Injury Report

    Break a Leg?

Bobby Petrino must be wondering who wished his team good luck last week in their win against Kentucky this past weekend. The head coach of the Louisville Cardinals lost two players because of broken legs.

Everybody knows about the Cardinals star running back, Michael Bush, who is lost for the season with a broken leg. Receiving less attention is starting defensive tackle Adrian Grady. Grady broke his right fibula in Sunday’s contest and will not be able to play for 2-4 weeks.

Sophomore Earl Heyman should replace Grady. Heyman started at defensive end in last week’s game. Louisville is 40.5-point road favorites against Temple this weekend with the total for the game set at 58.

Bulldogs` have a little less bite

The Georgia Bulldogs’ special teams may be a little less special this weekend. Return man Mikey Henderson, who had two long punt returns last week, did not practice this week and will not suit up against the South Carolina Gamecocks this weekend.

Henderson pulled a hamstring during a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown against Western Kentucky this past weekend. Georgia is a 3-point road favorite against South Carolina with a total for the game at 39.

    Quarterback question mark

The Boston College Eagles still are uncertain as to who will be their starting quarterback for their home showdown against the Clemson Tigers. Last week’s starter, Matt Ryan, threw for 321 yards but also suffered a sprained ankle in the contest. Ryan returned to practice on Wednesday, but back-up Chris Crane has taken all the snaps with the first unit offense this week in practice.

Eagles head coach Tom O’Brien has not named his starter even though Ryan has said he is good to go for the game. If Crane gets the nod as the starter bettors may want to be wary of the lack of experience. Crane threw four passes last year and completed three of them. The Eagles are 2 1/2-point home underdogs against the Tigers. The total for the game is set at 43.

    Out of the pocket

Eddie Royal, starting receiver for the Virginia Tech Hokies, will not be able to play this weekend against the North Carolina Tar Heels.

The Hokies, looking for more depth at receiver because of the injury, may put third string quarterback Cory Holt in some multiple receiver packages. Virginia Tech is 12 1/2-point road favorites. The total for this game is set at 41 1/2.

    Cougars` secondary licking wounds

Washington State will be missing a handful of players from their secondary in their game against Idaho. The Cougars will be without the services of their starting cornerback Don Turner and his backup Markus Dawes won’t be able to play either.

Two other backups in the secondary will not be available for action against Idaho. Washington State is a 17-point home favorite with a total for the game set at 53 1/2.

    RB Blues for the Bulls

University of South Florida will dig deep into their running back depth chart to find a back for today’s game against Florida International. The Bulls lost tailback Moise Plancher for the season after he tore a ligament in his right knee.

Plancher became the starter after sophomore tailback Ricky Ponton was suspended indefinitely during fall camp. Bulls head coach Jim Leavitt said on Thursday that he doesn’t know yet who would start Saturday against the Golden Panthers.

South Florida is 19.5-point home favorites with a total for the game set at 42.

        Dunkel Index - MLB

        SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

        Cleveland at Chicago White Sox
The Indians come in a heavy Vegas underdog today thanks to the pitching matchup that pits the hard-luck youngster Fausto Carmona against the recently rock-solid Jon Garland. While the matchup clearly favors the Chisox, Cleveland as a team has been playing better ball than Chicago of late. Over the last month, the Tribe has gone 20-9, while the White Sox have been a lackluster 15-15. In the first two games of this series, Cleveland thumped Chicago in the opener (9-1) and kept it within the run line last night (7-6). Given the two teams' recent performance, the Indians look like a worthy risk in this one according to Dunkel, which has Cleveland favored straight up by 1/2 a run. Dunkel Pick: Cleveland (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

            Streaking Pitchers - Sat. Sep.9

            HOT

Jon Garland Chicago White Sox - The White Sox starting rotation has been shaky this year but Garland has kept them afloat. He is 4-0 in his last five and 12-1 over his last 15 starts. He`s surrendered a total of just six earned runs in his last five outings. Chicago is a heavy –200 favorite against the Cleveland Indians tonight.

Mark Redman (Kansas City Royals) - Opponents have had a tough time just getting a hit against Redman lately. In his last two starts he has given up just nine hits and only one earned run in 16 innings of action. The Royals are +198 underdogs in Boston tonight.

Brett Myers (Philadelphia Phillies) - In his last three starts Myers is 2-0 with a sparkling 2.05 ERA. In his most recent start he pitched eight innings allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out 10 batters but had to settle for a no-decision. Oddsmakers have Philadelphia listed as a –137 fave against the Marlins tonight.

Esteban Loaiza (Oakland Athletics) - Out of nowhere, Loaiza has emerged as the hottest pitcher in baseball over the past month. He`s gone 5-0 with a 1.19 ERA in his last six outings and hasn’t allowed more then one earned run in any of his last five. The A’s are –146 favorites versus the D-Rays tonight.

Chuck James (Atlanta Braves) - James is unbeaten in his last five outings while posting a very impressive 1.84 ERA over that stretch. In his last start he pitched eight innings of one-hit ball in a 5-0 win over the New York Mets. James goes up against the Chicago Cubs tonight with Atlanta listed as a heavy –200 fave for the matchup.

            COLD

Josh Fogg (Colorado Rockies) - Fogg has been pounded all over the field in his last three trips to the mound going 0-2 with a horrendous 14.73 ERA. Over the stretch batters have hit .458 against Fogg. The Rockies have played over in each of his last six starts. Colorado is a –108 favorite against Washington tonight with the total set at 10 ½.

            Other Notables:

Chien-Ming Wang (New York Yankees) – Wang is 16-5 with a 3.69 ERA on the season.

Adam Loewen (Baltimore Orioles) - Loewen is unbeaten in his last four trips to the hill.

MLB Line Watch - Sat. Sep. 9

Kansas City at Boston – Kansas City +198

The chances of Kansas City winning six in a row against Boston just got better with struggling pitcher Josh Beckett getting the ball for the Red Sox in Game 2 of their three-game series.

Beckett has just one win his last eight starts, posting a 6.04 ERA during this skid. Beckett has allowed 24 runs in 22 2/3 innings pitched, but not all the blame can be put on the right-hander.

Boston has given Beckett only four runs of support in his last three starts, including just one run against Oakland that spoiled Beckett’s seven-inning gem last week. The Red Sox have been outscored 39-23 in their last five home games.

New York at Baltimore – Baltimore +166

With a firm nine-game grip on the American League East, the New York Yankees have started watching pitch counts.

"Whatever we can keep in the tank is probably going to help us later on," manager Joe Torre told the Washington Post about resting his starting rotation.

New York General Manager Brian Cashman mentioned he did not like to see pitchers go deep into games, searching for no-hitters and complete games. He knows this year’s team has a greater chance to win a championship based on its solid pitching, and does not want to lose that edge going into the postseason.

"After last year, we knew we needed to find more ways to beat people. And we had to cut down the ways we were beating ourselves," Cashman told reporters. "We relied too much on home runs. We were a station-to-station [offensive] team. And we were a bad defensive team with a pitching staff that didn`t hold runners."

Surprise Cy Young candidate Chein-Ming Wang will take the bump for the Yankees today, but will likely see limited time with only 23 games remaining on the schedule.

St. Louis at Arizona – Arizona -129

It’s the wrong time of year for the St. Louis Cardinals to alternate wins and losses.

St. Louis has jumped up and down in its last seven games and will have a hard time getting wins consistently with pitchers like Jason Marquis struggling down the home stretch of the season.

Marquis has only one win in his last six starts on the road, posting a 5.69 ERA in opponent’s parks and is 2-6 with a 6.10 ERA in his last eight appearances overall. The Cardinals right-hander has pitched past the sixth inning only twice in his last 10 starts.
