Falcons @ Panthers- Carolina crushed Atlanta 44-11 in season finale last year, after Birds had been eliminated from playoffs week before; last year was first time Panthers swept season series since '97. Five of last six series totals were 37 or less; under is 11-5 in Atlanta's last sixteen road openers, 9-1 in Panthers' last ten season openers. Loss of Finneran for season hurts Vick's passing game; can rookie Norwood replace Duckett as inside runner? Panthers ran ball for 371 yards in two wins vs Birds LY. Carolina covered just two of last nine home openers; they've been 0-1 in six of last nine seasons. Atlanta is 4-2 in last six openers, with both losses in OT.

Saints @ Browns- It took all summer, but Browns finally found center, liberating Fraley from bench in Philly. Cleveland is 1-6 in openers; they lost only other time they favored in this spot. Cleveland went through five centers this summer, before finally getting Fraley from Eagles last week, which solidifies that position. New-look Saints have Brees at QB, two quality RBs and a lousy defense- they've won five of last six road openers, covered seven of last eight. In fact, Saints have been 1-0 five of last eight years. Frye started five games for Browns last year (2-3) scoring five TDs on 55 drives, one on last 37.

Seahawks @ Lions- New-look Detroit now has Martz' offense; problem for them here is, Seattle has faced this offense twice a year since they've been in NFC, playing Rams, so they'll know it better than Lions will. Seattle lost Super Bowl on this field, now they try to win road opener for 7th time in last ten tries. Under is 16-2 in Seattle's last 18 road openers. Lions covered eight of last ten home openers, winning last three SU. Detroit has been 1-0 in five of last nine years. Have Seahawks gotten over Super Bowl loss yet? This game was bet up from 3.5 to 6 during summer. How much will Seattle miss Hutchinson, who left via free agency?

Eagles @ Texans- Philly started 0-1 four of last five years, but after TO debacle last year, Eagles eager to start new era on right foot. Philly covered five of last seven as favorite in road opener; they're 12-6 vs spread in last 18 road openers. Teams met once, with Eagles winning 35-17 (-20.5) at Vet in '02. Texans figure to be better with Kubiak in charge; they averaged only 14.6 yards per opening drive last year, so having offensive head coach will help, but can rookies carry load running ball? WR Stallworth will spark Eagle offense that was 30th in 3rd down conversions last year.

Bengals @ Chiefs- How healthy is Carson Palmer? He looked good in preseason win over Packers, but that wasn't on road, vs all-out pressure of regular season game. Home team won six of last seven series games, with Bengals losing five of last six visits to this site (three of five losses were by five or less pts). Chiefs pounded Cincy 37-3 last year, in season finale that Bengals didn't need, while KC was taking out their frustrations for missing playoffs; Green was 23-29 for 335 yards passing. How different will Chiefs be with Edwards in charge? Will they defend better?

Bills @ Patriots- New England won last four series games by average score of 29-9; Bills lost last five visits to this site, by 10,10,31,23,5 points; only one of their last seven series totals at this site was higher than 37. In two losses vs Patriots last year, Buffalo scored only two TDs on 21 drives, scoring just nine points in five red zone drives. Pats scored 42 pts on seven red zone drives. Patriots are 3-0-1 vs spread in last four home openers; six of their last seven went over total. Bills are 2-6 in last eight road openers, with four losses by 13+ pts. First game as Buffalo coach for Jauron-suspect Losman gets nod at QB.

Broncos @ Rams- Home side won last six Bronco-Ram games, with Denver losing last three at the Rams (by 4,6,5 pts), dropping only visit to Dome 41-36 in '00 opener, Rams' first game as World Champs. Broncos are 3-4 in last seven road openers; they lost AFC title game at home, then they drafted QB Cutler, putting Plummer's future in Mile High jeopardy. Linehan begins Ram tenure here; they should be more sound on special teams and defense, and less explosive on offense. Seven of Rams' last nine home openers went over the total. This is third time in last seven years these teams met in season opener.

Ravens @ Buccaneers- Baltimore returns to scene of their Super Bowl title, to face Bucs' squad that is 1-3 in home openers under Gruden. Ravens lost last five road openers, outscored by average of 22-9, but McNair makes his Raven debut; he figures to be major upgrade over Boller; Baltimore turned ball over 36 times last year, and scored just 0.76 ppd on drives that started 80+ yards from end zone (28th). Their 21.6 ypd on opening drive of a half was 31st in league. Expect Fassel to be more aggressive with a poised vet at QB. Under is 7-1 in Ravens' last eight road openers, 13-2 in Bucs' last fifteen openers.

Jets @ Titans- Jets cut C Mawae loose for cap reasons, now they face him in first game of Mangini era, but Titans not only have QB controversy, they haven't even named starter for this game yet. Fisher won seven of his last nine home openers; only twice in last nine seasons have they been 0-1. Jets are 6-12 in last 18 openers, with five of their last seven road openers staying under total. Jets won last two series games, winning only visit here 24-3 in '98. Not sure if Titans will give rookie Young a series each half; if Collins starts, he's only been with club couple of weeks. Tennessee was outscored 102-35 on opening drives of a half last year, worst in NFL.

49ers @ Cardinals- I have hard time laying more than seven pts in Week 1. In Cardinals' last 22 games vs 49ers, they have won by more than seven points only twice. Arizona opens at home for first time since coming to desert, thanks to gorgeous new dome; they swept 49ers last year (by 17,7 pts) after losing seven of its previous eight series games. Niners won three of last four visits to desert (this game was played in Mexico last year). In last year's wins vs Niners, Arizona outgained them 867-388, with SF scoring one TD on 23 drives. Why was Edgerrin James in Miami Monday night? Do the Cardinals practice?

Bears @ Packers- Since taking over in Chicago, Lovie Smith is 3-1 vs Packers, ending 18-2 Packer series run; they won last two visits to Lambeau by 11,7 points. Last year, both series games were played in December, after Packers' ship had sunk; Bears outrushed Pack 274-165- they beat Pack at home even though they completed just six of 17 passes. Favre tossed 29 INTs last year, surrounded by bad team; now Javon Walker is in Denver, but Ahman Green is back at RB, and McCarthy is new coach. Will it help? Pack lost last three season openers, allowing 25.7 ppg; they're 1-6 vs spread in last seven home openers. Dogs covered six of their last nine openers.

Cowboys @ Jaguars- Dallas makes first-ever visit to this site; they won two of three games vs Jaguars at home, with all three games decided by six or less points. Cowboys hung on to win opener in San Diego last year, first time in six years they've been 1-0; they allowed 32.4 ppg in last eight road openers. Jax covered eight of last ten home openers; under is 8-3 in their last 11. Interested to see how much Owens plays in Week 1, after not playing much during summer games. One area cowboys need to address is opening drive of a half; they were outscored 74-38 on those last year. Rumors flying in media that Romo will finish season as starting QB, ahead of Bledsoe.

Colts @ Giants- Peyton vs Eli, first time two brothers have both started NFL game at QB. Both sides thinking Super Bowl; Giants are in much tougher division. Indy lost James to free agency; can they achieve any kind of balance with Rhodes/Addai splitting RB duties? Giants allowed TDs on only 16.8% of drives last year (10th), while Indy scored TDs on 33.3% of their drives (1st). Colts opening on road seventh year in row; they're 5-1 last six openers, and 6-1-1 as favorite in road opener. Giants won seven of last nine home openers, covering four of last five; they've been 1-0 six of last nine years. Viniatiei in Colts' new kicker, but he has injured ankle.

Vikings @ Redskins- Washington had awful preseason, losing Portis in opener, then getting drilled 41-0 by Patriots, but all that is forgotten with win here vs new-look Vikings, led by former Eagle offensive coordinator Childress. Minnesota lost four of last five visits to DC; five of their last 17 series games were in playoffs. Vikings lost three of last four Monday night games, but covered seven of ten as dog on Monday night. Skins are 2-7 in last nine Monday games, but they won last four home openers, by 8,3,6,2 pts. Childress has gone up against Redskins twice a year with Eagles, while Skins learning Saunders' new offense. This game has been bet down from 7 to 4.5 during summer.

Chargers @ Raiders- Rivers finally makes Charger debut, after two years on bench; Bolts won last five game vs rival Raiders, winning by average score of 29-14; three of their last four series wins were by 13+ points. Oakland is 7-0 in last seven Week 1 home games (1-10 on road) and 14-4 in last 18 home openers, but they have new coach, new QB and are just 7-15 in last 22 Monday games, 0-3 in last three (outscored 89-27). Last three Oakland home openers stayed under total. Chargers outscored Oakland 61-24 in two games last year, scoring six TDs on 21 drives, despite a -1 turnover ratio- they forced 10 3-and-outs on Raiders' 21 drives in those two games.

                      Six-Pack for Saturday

-- I look at U of Cincinnati's sports program, and I think, at some point, they'll regret joining the Big East. First of all, if you look at a map, Cincinnati is in western Ohio, which is close to Indiana, so they're a midwestern school.

-- Second, their football program isn't good, and with hoop having sixteen teams in Big East, they'll have to be really good to make NCAAs every year. Think it was bad move, especially with Bob Huggins removed from the equation.

-- Another bad move is pitching to Ryan Howard; the guy hit two more taters Friday night, now has 56. Impressive.

-- Royals pitched to Ortiz with first base open and two out; Devil Rays pitched to Thomas with first base open and two out. You wonder why these teams lose? They let the best guy on the other team swing the bat in big spots. Stupid.

-- Have to tip the cap to Buddy Bell, though, they're 12-11 in their last 23 games, despite a bullpen that has allowed 20 runs in its last eleven innings pitched. Royals have spunk.

-- Funny that St Louis will make playoffs; they're really not a good team, having played poorly since mid-June. Team that wins the NL Wild Card will at least be a ht team.

Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..................

                        13) Last time two times #1 met #2 in a regular season college football game, the loser went on to win the national title that season.

                        12) Arkansas' 50-14 home loss to USC was enough to get touted freshman QB Mustain promoted to starter. Deposed starter Johnson seemed unhappy when he was yanked last week, so he should be real happy about this.

                        11) Its not bad enough that Iowa was playing I-AA Montana last week, but they had 34-7 lead very late in game, when they went ahead and scored 1-yard TD with six seconds left. Very classy. They shouldn't be playing the team in the first place.

                        10) Red flag for Kansas State: they got outgained 346-207 last week, by a I-AA team. Wildcats were lucky to win by a single point.

                        9) Speaking of K-State, their starting QB is Kerry Meier. Starting QB for archrival Kansas is Dylan Meier. Just thought you'd like to know.

                        8) The '05 49ers finished last in both yards gained and yards allowed; that just doesn't happen very often.

                        7) There is highly touted high school player out there who has gotten 20 football scholarship offers, including ones from Alabama and Ohio State, despite fact that he is facing armed robbery charges that could land him in jail for up to 20 years.

                        6) You associate Pittsburgh with defense, but over is 10-0-1 in Steelers' last 12 home games. Their cover Thursday makes whomever Super Bowl champ is 5-0-1 vs spread in their season opener the last six seasons.

                        5) Steve McNair will be the 10th different starting QB Brian Billick has employed as head coach of the Ravens.

                        4) Washington Huskies won last week, but had their smallest home crowd since 1981 (52,256). This was a powerful program not that long ago.

                        3) UL-Monroe is latest team to dump Indians as a nickname; they're now known as the War Hawks. How come no one calls their team the Armadillos?

                        2) The Maloofs are everywhere; they own the Sacramento Kings, the Palms casino and we found out this week that the winner of the New Mexico-New Mexico State football game wins the Maloof Trophy.

                        1) The last six Super Bowl losers have failed to cover season opener the following year.

                          Saturday's Games

                          Televised Games

Virginia Tech waxed North Carolina last year 30-3 in Blacksburg, outrushing Tar Heels 277-36 and holding UNC to 15-41/160 thru the air. Carolina covered eight of last 10 after loss; they lost last week at home to Rutgers 21-16, as Knights ran ball for 223 yards so rush defense still a problem. Tech covered 12 of last 18 after a win, seven of last nine league road games and seven of nine as a road favorite.

Rutgers led 27-7 at Illinois last year, but lost 33-30 in OT, one of two Illini wins in '05; Knights gained 517 yards in disappointing loss, but they still made bowl, and won at UNC last week, so lot of momentum for Rutgers' home opener- they're 6-11 vs spread in last 17 home openers, and 2-7 vs the spread in game after last nine wins. Illinois is 20-10 vs spread after win, but 3-11 in last 14 tries as road dog. Rutgers 4-5 as home favorite under Schiano.

NC State completed just 7-13/44 passing last week, so concerns over Wolfpack offense still exist; they're 4-12 vs spread in game after their last 16 wins, and just 3-10 vs spread in last 13 tries as home favorite. Akron covered four of last six as road dog; they held Penn State to 76 rushing yards last week, in 34-16 loss. One good thing for State; they had only three penalties last week.

Thought Schaeffer did enough to get Ole Miss home with a win last week, but 7-16/99 passing ain't going to do it on road. Rebs just 7-15 vs spread in last 22 non-SEC games, but are 6-4 in last ten tries as road dog. Their SEC opener is next week. Missouri covered just one of last six after a win, but they're 15-10 vs the spread after a win (they drilled I-AA Murray State last week). Sophomore Daniel got couple series at QB in every game last yr.

Army lost 14-6 as road favorite at Arkansas State last week, as Cadets were outrushed 222-69 and passed for only 95 yards, in bad loss. kent was blasted 44-0 at home by Minnesota, getting stopped twice near goal line by Gophers. Kent covered only two of last ten road openers; they're 3-6 in last nine tries as road dog Army covered nine of last thirteen games vs MAC competition.

Clemson lost at home in OT to Boston College last year, after a 10-0 lead disappeared; Tigers covered seven of their last nine road openers. BC is 24-14 vs spread in last 38 home games, but are 1-3 as home dog last three years. BC ran ball for just 85 yds in 31-24 opening win at Central Michigantotal yardage was just 408-366, and Chippewas used their second string quarterback. Eagles covered last thrteen series games.

Syracuse lost 20-10 at Wake Forest last week, allowing 247 yds on ground; Orange gained total of just 141 yards and were 2-11 on third down, despite having senior QB (he's not very good). Iowa failed to cover last three tries as road fave- they're 20-12 vs spread in game after their last 32 wins, and are 7-3-1 vs spread in last 11 games on carpet. Syracuse is 21-8 vs spread last 29 times they were home dog, but covered just 7 of last 23 home openers.

Washington beat San Jose State 35-29 last week, just fourth win in last 2+ years, but San Jose was 28-35/326 passing. U-Dub is 1-7 vs spread in game after their last eight wins, 4-13 vs spread on grass, 4-8 in last dozen tries as road dog. Oklahoma was life-and-death with UAB last week, holding on to 24-17 win that was tied at half. Rushing yardage was 141-135, but Sooners did toss ball for 277 yards in Thompson's return to QB position.

Penn State had just 76 yards rushing vs Akron last week; JoePa is concerned with young OL. Lions held NFL prospect Getsy to 23-43/192 passing last week, but now they move up in class, as they visit Heisman frontrunner quinn. Irish won 14-10 last week in Atlanta; they had 11 penalties for 80 yards, but held Tech to 2-11 on third down and shut Jackets out in second half. Penn St is 8-3 vs spread after a win, but 3-5 in last eight tries as road dog

Three Colorado State players, one a former starter at defensive back, were charged with felony fraud this week, as Rams prepare for rivalry game vs Colorado, which lost to I-AA Montana State last week, 19-10. Rams covered just five of last 16 after win and 16-26 in last 42 tries as favorite. Underdog is 13-3 vs spread in this series, with Buffs winning four of last five, but not scoring in second half vs I-AA team last week indicates that both sides here have serious issues, some on the field, some off.

Arizona is improved team with good OL and electric QB Tuitama but Wildcats were outgained at home by BYU last week, 312-254 with Arizona running ball for only 69 yards. LSU is superior club that held ULL to eight first downs in 45-3 thrashing last week, a game where Tigers were 17-23/299 passing. LSU has Auburn on deck, so lookahead threat looms. LSU is 13-6 vs spread in last 19 September games, but 5-8 in last thirteen tries as home favorite.

Cal got whacked in Knoxville last week, now they go home, face Minnesota squad that won its opener 44-0 at Kent, running ball for 322 yards and forcing six turnovers. Bears lost 35-18 last wk, running ball 23 times for 64 yards, and completing 20-42 passes, so QB guru Tedford has work to do. Minnesota is 5-12 in last 17 tries as road dog, but they have senior QB. Cal is 10-9 as home favorite under Tedford. Gophers faced this Northwestern-style offense every year in Big 11 play.

Arkansas State covered 14 of last 18 tries as home dog, but are 7-17 vs spread in game after a win; they upset Army last week, outrushing Cadets 222-69 and outgaining Army 319-164. last year, ASU lost 20-10 to Oklahoma State, even though ASU had a 322-273 edge in total yardage, running ball for 200 yards. OSU covered six of last seven tries as road favorite and seven of last nine non-Big 12 games.

Georgia won last four games vs South Carolina; they beat USC 17-15 last year, outrushing Gamecocks 238-43. Home team is 8-4 vs spread in last dozen series games. Carolina shut Miss State out in opener, but MSU's QB broke his collarbone. Dawgs have a senior QB who is program guy but not great player- they were just 12-25 passing last week vs Western Kentucky, and gained only 295 yards in total offense. Georgia is 12-6 in last 18 tries as a road favorite, but just 5-8 vs spread in last 13 road openers.

Texas had three-year starting cornerback suspended for this on drug/weapon charges; it has to hurt them. Longhorns won last year at Columbus, outgaining Buckeyes 382-255, but Young was 18-29/270 passing, and he's in Nashville now, while McCoy is making just his second college start. San Diego State's QB got hurt last week vs UTEP, but a sub came in and Aztecs were 24-30/275 thru air, which may not bode well for Miners vs Tech's aerial assault. Miners covered 4 of last five non-league games; Price's revival of UTEP program has generated lot of enthusiasm at the Sun Bowl.

Fresno State covered four of last five as home dog, is 24-13 vs spread after win, and 22-8 vs spread in last 30 non-WAC games; they're especially dangerous vs BCS teams, with ten outright upsets in recent years. Oregon covered fifteen of last eighteen games on grass, 24 of its last 29 road openers, but they trailed Fresno State 17-0 at home last year, before rallying for 37-34 win (-2.5).. Total yardage in last year's game at Autzen was 530-492 in favor of visiting Fresno State.
