                Hot streaks:

Chris Capuano - (Milwaukee Brewers) - This All-Star has a stellar 2.37 ERA over his last three starts for the Brewers with a 0.84 WHIP. Capuano is averaging a strikeout per inning over that span, and the Brewers are priced as -108 home favorites tonight as they host the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Anibal Sanchez - (Florida Marlins) - Books and sharp bettors alike have caught on to the money train that is Anibal Sanchez. The rookie right-hander is undefeated since Aug. 4 with a 1.80 ERA for Florida. The Marlins are listed as -165 home favorites tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kenny Rogers - (Detroit Tigers) - Rogers has shown bettors over the last month that he is more than a first-half pitcher. In fact, he is currently baseball`s hottest starter. Rogers has won four straight decisions for the Tigers while posting a miniscule 0.43 ERA in 26 innings. Detroit is priced at -154 at home today against the Seattle Mariners

                Cold streaks:

Ted Lilly - (Toronto Blue Jays) - Lilly has been absolutely brutal lately. The inconsistent lefty has a whopping 9.00 ERA in his last three outings, having surrendered 18 hits in his last 14 innings. Lilly and the Blue Jays are set as -114 favorites tonight at Rogers Centre against the Cleveland Indians.

Randy Wolf - (Philadelphia Phillies) - The Wolfpack in Philadelphia hasn`t had anything to cheer about over the last month. Wolf has a 6.60 ERA since Aug. 19 while giving up 9 walks in 15 innings for the Phillies, set as -116 favorites at home tonight against the Houston Astros.

Jose Contreras - (Chicago White Sox) - Talk about questionable value. The White Sox are -126 favorites tonight at Fenway Park in Boston despite Contreras` status as the coldest pitcher in baseball. The Cuban is winless in four starts with a 9.95 ERA and a .448 OBP against.

                Other notables:

Chris Carpenter - (St. Louis Cardinals) - Carpenter is 6-3 at home this season with a 1.60 ERA.

Randy Johnson - (New York Yankees) - The Big Unit is 9-6 at night in 2006 with a 4.72 ERA.

John Smoltz - (Atlanta Braves) - The veteran of five World Series is 2-1 in his last three starts with a 3.43 ERA.

MLB Line Watch - Wed. Sep. 6

Houston at Philadelphia – Astros +108

                  Andy Pettitte, Silver Slugger?

Don’t laugh because it’s a distinct possibility given the Houston Astros pitcher’s .231 average with five RBIs and one home run this season.

“It`s a legitimate call,” said manager Phil Garner, noting one player at each position must be given the award and only Chan Ho Park has a better batting average among pitchers.

But tonight bettors are more concerned about his pitching and just how solid the left-hander has been lately, winning three of his last five games while allowing more than two runs only once.

That’s not encouraging for a Philadelphia Phillies squad that is hitting only .256 off left-handers and has not beaten a southpaw since a 6-3 win over Ryan O’Malley and the Chicago Cubs Aug. 22.

Chicago White Sox at Boston – Red Sox +118

                  Everyone loves Big Papi.

So just imagine the emotional boost the slumping Red Sox received when Big Papi (AKA David Ortiz) returned from his irregular heartbeat scare to play versus the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night.

“I was thrilled,” manager Terry Francona told the Providence Journal.

Unfortunately though there were no towering walk-off shots as Ortiz and the Red Sox offense sputtered in a 1-0 win over White Sox as a +118 underdog.

But don’t expect that to happen when Boston faces Chicago hurler Jose Contreras tonight. The Cuban righty has been brutal lately, losing his last four starts while posting a 9.95 ERA over his last three games.

New York Yankees at Kansas City – Royals +204

Mariano Rivera’s ailing elbow won’t cause Joe Torre to lose any sleep.

But all things being equal, the New York Yankees manager won’t use his ace reliever until Friday when the team travels to take on the Baltimore Orioles.

“He felt tight yesterday when he threw,” Torre told the New York Times Tuesday. “But before he went out there, he did a lot of work. We’ll just see how it feels.”

That means Rivera won’t be available tonight and that just might tell you how important (or unimportant) this two-game set versus the Kansas City Royals is to the Yankees.

That was certainly the case Tuesday when the team showed as much fight as Gerry Cooney versus Mike Tyson, losing 5-0 as a -225 favorite behind Mike Mussina.

Now they throw Randy Johnson on the hill tonight. The big right-hander has struggled over his last three games, going 2-1 with a 5.09 ERA while his counterpart, Runelvys Hernandez, has been solid (2-1 , 2.29 ERA).

"NY Giants: 44-1 Under with a total of 42.5 to 49 points"

Is that a typo? Is that even possible?

This is definitely a typo! Good catch! I just read this morning that, last season, the over-under was 8-8 for the NYG.

                                GrandPa,

I have noticed, over time, that mistakes are not unusual in this info. We get it from major stat-tracking outfits and are just copying what they are posting.
If you're reading carefully, though, you will catch them. They're usually glaringly obvious like the one on NYG today.
