              Six-Pack for Wednesday

-- Why some teams always stink, part 362: Orioles have two men on, two out, Roberts up in 2-2 game in top of the 10th; he hits line drive single to left. With Tejada on deck, they send the runner, who gets thrown out by 30 feet at plate. Leftfielder had the ball two steps before runner hit third.
-- When Boston reacquired Doug Mirabelli from the Padres, they threw in a reliever named Cla Meredith; right now, as Padres jockey for a playoff spot, Meredith has thrown 27.1 consecutive scoreless innings in relief for San Diego.
-- Jay Payton got infield hit Tuesday when his bat exploded and the barrel hit the ball again as it was going towards the fielder, who had to dive back to stop it, but couldn't make a throw on time. Very strange play.
-- Buddy Bell figured out that when your team sucks, and you have a reliever pitching well, just leave him in-- in their 5-0 win over Bronx Tuesday, Todd Wellemeyer got 11-out save-- you don't see a whole lot of those.
-- Only good teams can be secure going with three or four relievers to close out a win; with a bad team, chances are someone will come in and screw it up. Long saves lessen the chance of that happening. Let the hot guy stay in.
-- Some jackass (and this guy gets paid serious money) was ranting on the radio Tuesday about how Johan Santana is overrated; keep in mind that Minnesota is 24-2 in his last 26 starts, winning his last eleven in a row. And he's overrated?

Wednesday's List of 13: Preseason look at Eagles, Rams....

                Philadelphia Eagles
                13) Guaranteed, Eagles will enjoy this year more than they did last; they lost eight of their last ten games, fired Owens, lost McNabb to a hernia injury, just a trainwreck of a season. Now that Owens is in Dallas, things should be more peaceful.

                12) Philly went 3-and-out 81 times on 201 drives last year; the 40.3% ratio was 31st in NFL. Philly was 1-7 when they lost the average starting field position battle.

                11) Eagles were also worst in NFL, with -78 incompletion ratio thats 78 more times they had play that gained no yards. They tossed 284 incompletions, an average of 17.8 per game.

                10) Third down was also a problem; Eagles converted 31.8% of third down plays; only Bears, 49ers were worse.

                9) Even the sturdy defense sprung some leaks; Philly's D in red zone gave up 5.06 ppd (28th); on drives that started in their territory, they allowed 4.5 ppd, second-worst in league.

                8) There is evidence the defense got discouraged, as they did poorly deep in their own territory, but on drives where they had other side 80+ yards from goal line, they held opponents to 0.73 ppd, second-best figure in league.

                7) Eagles were outscored 72-47 on first drives of a half.

                6) Things got ugly late in season; Eagles had turnover ratio of -12 in their last five games. Jeff Garcia has been brought in to be backup QB, an upgrade over McMahon/Detmer.

                5) Brad Childress is off to Minnesota, so Marty Mornhinweg is the new offensive coordinator; not sure how good that is. He seemed overmatched as a head coach in Detroit.

                4) I worry about a team that lost games 49-21 and 42-0 in '05; the only game they won in last five weeks was vs St Louis club that was even more screwed up than the Eagles.

                3) Eagles drafted linemen, defense and a skier (Colorado WR Bloom, who is now out for the year). They traded Fraley to a desperate Cleveland team, so they figure to add decent draft pick in 2008 for that. Philly is a pretty astute organization.

                2) Well, Dallas comes calling in Week 5, so that should be lot of fun for the whole family; Eagles visit Dallas Christmas nite. Week 2's visit by the Giants is big, after being 0-6 in division tilts last year. Their bye is in Week 9, which is late, so if they can stay healthy early, that will be very helpful late in season. Brett Favre and Packers play Monday nighter in Philly, only six days before the hated Cowboys come to town.

                1) Eagles went 0-6 in NFC East games last year; with McNabb now healthy, Owens now history, things figure to get better. How much better depends on how healthy they stay.

                St Louis Rams
                13) Martz Madness has scooted off to Detroit, so now Rams are an NFL afterthought, ignored by media this summer, and even picked to go 5-11 by Sports Illustrated. But this is team that still has firepower and with Jim Haslett running defense, they're be tougher on that side of ball, too. If we get lucky, maybe they'll even practice special teams now........

                12) Under Martz, Rams became a turnover-making joke; only the Saints' meltdown last year prevented St Louis from giving ball away the most again-- they still had 37 giveaways (-10), and that was with Martz missing several games with illness.

                11) Rams allowed 13 more TD's than they scored last year; in a nutshell, that has to change. They allowed TD's on 26.2% of enemy drives last year (30th). IF they cut down on miscues that should protect the defense and help reduce that figure.

                10) As far back as George Allen, it was noted that teams who turn ball over 2+ times in game are doomed. Rams turned ball over 37 times in 16 games-- you do the math.

                9) Rams allowed foes to convert 40.2% on third down last yr, a horrible number; they were 30th in red zone defense, and worst in NFL, allowing 4.91 ppd on drives that started in their territory. All this may be why they took chance on Wroten, a talented but troubled defensive lineman from LSU. If he can help to stop the run, things should pick up from there.

                8) For team with lousy record, Rams outscored opponents by 20 points (64-44) on first drive of a half. Their 36 ypd average was 5th in NFL, a tribute to Martz' offensive prowess. All the turnovers and Bulger's injury eventually did them in, though.

                7) On offense, it all boils down to whether the line can open holes for Jackson and protect Bulger. The receivers are still very good, and Jackson is a bigtime back primed for breakout season. But Incognito has to help at left guard, and like every team, they have to stay healthy.

                6) It must be noted that as bizarre as Martz is/was, he was/is a great developer of QB's. Linehan's offense is simpler than the Martz offense, so it shouldn't take players as long to pick it up. Also, gu sFrerotte is the new backup QB; he led Miami on its six-game season-ending win streak, so he knows it inside and out, and figures to be big help to Bulger.

                5) Funny that Colts opened exhibition season with an onside kick that worked; from that point on, Rams blitzed Indy rest of the game. Haslett figures to be more aggressive than last yr. Then again, almost anybody would be more aggressive than the previous regime's defense. The defense has some upside.

                4) Rams drafted defense with three of their first four picks and also signed CB Smith from Saints. Positive sign is that they cut DeJuan Groce this summer; he had started 20 games for them, so they feel they've upgraded att he corner. Setterstrom is sleeper as a guard in 7th round; he helped open big holes at Minnesota for Laurence Maroney.

                3) Tight end will be strange position for Rams; they drafted a pair, but Aaron Walker looks like the starter. If they're going to get Stepehn Jackson some big games running ball, they'll need some blocking from this position, which has been awful ever since Ernie Conwell left town.

                2) Teams who had lousy years get nondescript schedules; they open with Denver for third team in last seven years, for whatever reason, then visit 49ers, Cardinals before Detroity and Coach Martz visit in Week 4. They have no cold weather games, host the Bears in Week 14 Monday nighter and play division titan Seattle in weeks 6 and 10. Manageable slate.

                1) Don't forget though, when Colts were rolling, Rams went to Indy, had 17-0 lead, and were driving for another score when Bulger tossed INT and was injured making tackle. Linehan is coaching team with some talent; if he and Haslett can instill more toughness and the OL protects Bulger, this is a playoff team. Laugh if you want, Rams will be better in 2006.

Top five NFL Week 1 underdogs

Week 1 of the NFL season is probably the hardest on a bettor`s bankroll. Teams, players and coaches are one year older and may have a different agenda. The Minnesota Vikings are a prime example.

That`s why it has been said the first four weeks of the NFL season are when underdogs are most usually the most profitable. The best underdog bets of the last five years for Week 1 of the NFL.

Four of the five teams are road underdogs this week.

                      1. Atlanta Falcons
                      Record: 4-0

Close may be reserved for horseshoes and hand grenades but it’s no stranger to the Atlanta Falcons in the opening week. Three of Atlanta’s four underdog paydays over the last five years have been by four points or less, with the other being a straight up win over the Cowboys in Dallas.

That’s nothing new for the Falcons. Three of their paydays have come on the road while last year’s win over Philadelphia came on Monday Night Football. Obviously, Atlanta loves pressure in Week 1.

Week 1 opponent: at Carolina (-5)

                      2. Minnesota Vikings
                      Record: 2-0

If any team needs a win to start the season, it’s the Minnesota Vikings. Just when things appeared to be getting back to normal in the Twin city, No.1 wide receiver Koren Robinson is arrested and charged with drinking and driving, which leads to him being released by the team.

Minnesota did lure Todd Pinkston to fill the void but the former Philadelphia Eagle hasn’t played a regular reason game since the 2005 Super Bowl because of a torn Achilles’ tendon. Pinkston caught one pass in his lone preseason game last week versus Pittsburgh.

Week 1 opponent: at Washington (-4)

                      3. San Francisco 49ers
                      Record: 2-0

Initially, San Francisco’s back-to-back opening week underdog paydays, makes the 49ers a solid sleeper. The straight up win over St. Louis was impressive, as was the 3-point loss to the Atlanta Falcons two years back. But the fact both opponents are dome teams raises major questions about whether San Francisco was simply a beneficiary of home field advantage.

Dome teams playing on real grass, as opposed to artificial turf, often struggle, which is likely the case here. Neither Atlanta nor St. Louis was a pushover in either of those seasons.

                      Week 1 opponent: at Arizona (-7 1/2)

                      4. Houston Texans
                      Record: 2-1

Four years removed from their first payday in their first game, as an underdog no less, the Houston Texans continue to search for respect as a competitive NFL team. That won’t happen until the Texans do something drastic, like finish with a winning record or even .500.

Until then, oddsmakers will continue to stack the line against Houston knowing the public will fade the Texans because of the notion Houston is still in its infancy. The loss of running back Domanick Davis for the season likely won’t change the public’s opinion either.

Week 1 opponent: vs. Philadelphia (+4)

                      5. Dallas Cowboys
                      Record: 2-1

It’s hard to imagine a public darling the Cowboys being dogged in the opening week of the NFL. But for the third straight year, oddsmakers are doing exactly that. While it may be by less than a field goal, the Cowboys again find themselves beginning the season on the road, where the Cowboys have more trouble covering than Mike Vanderjagt does keeping quiet.

Since 2001, the Cowboys are 18-21 against the number away from the Lone Star State.

                      Week 1 opponent: at Jacksonville (-2 1/2)

                        HOT TIPS FROM MAUI

                        NCAA

                        U S C
Starting Southern California free safety Josh Pinkard tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the third-ranked Trojans` 50-14 opening victory over Arkansas and won`t play again this season.

                        TEXAS
Texas starting cornerback Tarell Brown and backup linebacker and special teams player Tyrell Gatewood were suspended for Saturday`s game against No. 1 Ohio State after their arrest on misdemeanor charges.

                        NFL

                        STEELERS VS THE DOLPHINS

Ben Roethlisberger underwent an emergency appendectomy Sunday evening and won`t be available for the NFL opener Thursday night against the Miami Dolphins.

Batch doesn’t have the ability to stretch the defense. Without Roethlisberger, defenses can just stack the box and blitz and that really plays into what Miami likes to do.

The problem is further compounded by Hines Ward`s’ status. The star wideout is listed as day-to-day with a strained hamstring.

Ward is probably going to play, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be healthy enough to practice until later in the week

This is also a short practice week, so this creates a real tactical headache.

FOR THE EARLY BIRDS. NFL WEEK 1 LINE MOVES

Miami at Pittsburgh (Thursday) – The line opened Pittsburgh -5 and is down to -4. Expect it to dip even more, perhaps even down to a field goal. There’s tremendous buzz about the Dolphins this season, especially now that Daunte Culpepper appears recovered from a knee injury.

Denver at St. Louis – The Broncos opened -3 ½ and currently are at -3. That’s where the line figures to stay.

New York Jets at Tennessee – The Titans opened -2 ½ and are up to -3. The move up isn’t because of the Titans signing Kerry Collins. He’s an upgrade on Billy Volek, but most likely Collins won’t be ready for the opener. The change in the pointspread is because the Jets look plain awful. They won’t be getting any help (at least for the first six weeks) from Curtis Martin either. No matter how bad the Jets might look, though, don’t expect the line to climb higher. If anything it might go down to 2 ½ because the Titans are also a bad team.

Baltimore at Tampa Bay – The Bucs opened -4 and are at -3. Expect buy-back on Tampa Bay, though, before a probable closing at -3 ½. Baltimore looks improved with Steve McNair at quarterback, but it has dropped 12 of its last 13 road games.

Buffalo at New England – The Patriots have gone from -8 to -8 ½. This is dead number area. The public may push it to -9 or higher remembering how good the Patriots looked against the Redskins last week and maybe thinking about how New England has defeated Buffalo in 10 of the past 11 meetings.

Cincinnati at Kansas City – Very early, the Chiefs were -4 ½. The line was taken down for a while and now, after Carson Palmer’s smashing performance this past Monday, the line has been adjusted to Chiefs -3. Considering how great Palmer and the Bengals looked against the Packers, the line could shrink to -2 ½.

Seattle at Detroit – The Seahawks opened -3 ½ and are either there or -4. Don’t expect any different number to emerge.

Atlanta at Carolina – The Panthers are -4 ½. Solid number.

Philadelphia at Houston – The Eagles opened -3 and are up to -3 ½ with Donovan McNabb having an impressive preseason. This line probably holds at 3 ½.

New Orleans at Cleveland – Some places opened Cleveland -2 ½. Now the line is -3 and could reach 3 ½ soon. A number of wise guys already have gotten involved with the Browns here.

Dallas at Jacksonville – The Jaguars are a steady -3. This may not be a big-handle game for the books. The number is real solid.

Chicago at Green Bay – The Bears are -3, but this game probably goes to at least -3 ½. It’s hard to make a case for the home underdog Packers with their rookie guards against such a tough defense even if Bears coach Lovie Smith is foolish enough to stick with Rex Grossman.

San Francisco at Arizona – The Cardinals are -7 ½. Look for them to get bet up. It’s their first game in a new stadium and there’s going to be plenty of hype and optimism.

Indianapolis at New York Giants – The Colts opened -3 ½ and are down to -3. The public loves Indy and Peyton Manning, but perhaps not in this spot. This is the first NBC Sunday night game, so money may continue to come on the home underdog.

Minnesota at Washington (Monday) – Washington opened -6 and is down to -5 ½. Considering how bad the Redskins looked in preseason, the public may keep away from them even though Clinton Portis may be OK to start. Don’t be shocked if the line gets down to -4 ½ by post.

San Diego at Oakland (Monday) – San Diego opened as a 2 ½-point road favorite and is up to -3. The line, though, may go back down since Philip Rivers didn’t look good in his last preseason game and will be making his first road start. The Chargers also lost their offensive left tackle, Roman Oben.

                              Atlanta at NY Mets
While Dave Williams can't find a steady spot in the rotation, moving back-and-forth between the Mets and Triple-A Norfolk, he has has been effective when called upon (2-0, 3.79 ERA). He'll look to build on that today for New York against Atlanta in the first of a doubleheader. The Mets come in a Vegas underdog facing Atlanta's John Smoltz, but a steady performance out of Williams combined with a more-focused New York attack should make New York a solid play according to Dunkel, which has the Mets favored straight up by 1. Dunkel Pick: NY Mets (+1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.
