      TOTAL WATCH

      Atlanta at Philadelphia - under 10 ½

Rain, rain. Go away. The Braves and Phills play four in two days.

Thanks to the leftovers of Hurricane Ernesto, Atlanta and Philadelphia are cramming four days of baseball into one soggy, action packed weekend. After Friday’s series opener was postponed, the clubs agreed to play two on both Saturday and Sunday. The teams split yesterday’s contests.

The Braves and Phillies will go deep into their rosters for this marathon series, leaving both managers with questionable lineup adjustments.

“We`ve got a better bench and we`ve got some guys we can put out there now that can definitely do the job,” Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel told reporters.

If weather permits the teams will play Game 1 of the second doubleheader at 1:35 p.m. ET and then take the field for Game 2 at 4:35 p.m. ET.

      Baltimore Oakland – under 9 ½

They say prison changes a man.

In the case of Esteban Loazia, it was for the better. Loaiza was arrested for a DUI in June of this year, but has bounced back to give the A’s a much needed boost in the rotation. Oakland is 22-6 since Aug. 2.

Loazia has won four straight starts, posting a 1.21 ERA and allowing one earned run in his last 30 2/3 innings pitched. The right-hander has given up only one walk in 22 2/3 innings and has made a bundle for under bettors with eight of his last 10 starts playing below the total.

"Right now, I`m playing good ball and feeling great," Loaiza told reporters. "Whatever was said in April and May was said. I don`t read the newspapers."

Los Angeles at Detroit – under 9

The Angels expect another lengthy performance from their staff workhorse when Kelvim Escobar takes the bump today against the Detroit Tigers.

Escobar, 9-12 this season with a 3.79 ERA, is 6-0 in his last seven starts with six of his last eight playing under the total. The right-hander has pitched an average of almost seven innings in his last 10 appearances, with the under cashing in five of his last six starts.

"One of the keys was trusting my stuff a little bit more. Sometimes, I tend to overthrow the ball," Escobar said of his recent success.

Los Angels will try to give its red-hot hurler some backup, but the Angels have scored three or fewer runs in nine of Escobar’s 12 losses this year.

        LINE WATCH

Chicago White Sox at Kansas City – Royals +141

Kansas City Royals pitching coach Bob McClure turned to football to help today’s starter Mark Redman halt a seven-game losing streak.

McClure approached the 32-year old veteran a couple of weeks ago about the prospects of adding a cut fastball to his repertoire, but Redman said he had never tried to use one before.

“Then he asked me if I`d ever thrown a football,” Redman told the San Diego Union Tribune. “Well, I was a quarterback. That was my love. He told me to hold it and throw it like a football. Don`t do anything with your wrist. Just throw it like a football. And . . . it just cuts.”

The results of McClure’s teachings were evident in Redman`s last start. Using his new pitch, Redman tossed a complete game, five-it shutout in Kansas City’s 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Cincinnati at San Diego – Padres -127

If nothing else David Wells is a competitor.

For that reason alone, the San Diego Padres had no hesitation in trading for the 44-year old pitcher at last week’s trade deadline.

“He`s definitely the kind of guy you want on your team at the end of the year and in the playoffs,” second baseman Mark Bellhorn told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “He`s been in this game a long time and pitched in a lot of huge games.”

Of course, Wells` current form made the decision much easier for the Padres, who sit just one game up on Philadelphia and 1 ½ up on Cincinnati in the NL wild-card race. Wells, a San Diego native, has lasted at least six innings and has given up more than two runs only once in his last five starts.

“(This is) just an opportunity to pitch and try to help a team win and try to go to the playoffs,” Wells told reporters this week. “That`s when I shine. I`ve done it my whole career. I love the ball in a big game.”

Colorado at Los Angeles Dodgers – Dodgers –155

Nomar Garciaparra may have found his hitting stroke.

The Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman, who continues to be plagued by a knee injury, went 2-for-4 with six RBIs in the team’s 14-5 pasting of the Colorado Rockies Saturday.

But the former All-Star stayed away from any suggestion a slump that has seen him hit .205 since the All-Star break is over.

“I did my job,” Garciaparra told the Los Angeles Times. “I`m concerned about winning. That`s all I care about.”

All told, the Dodgers have now won seven games in a row and have owned the Rockies this season, winning 12 of 15 meetings.
