                Dunkel Index – MLB

                Sunday September 3, 2006

                Baltimore at Oakland
On a staff already loaded with quality starters, Oakland's Esteban Loaiza has surprisingly moved to the top of the list after going perfect in August (4-0, 1.48) and not allowing an earned run in his last 28 2/3 innings. Loaiza is matched up today against Baltimore prospect Hayden Penn, who had an up-and-down experience with the Birds last year (3-2, 6.34 in eight starts). With Penn making his first start of the season against a playoff-caliber team and red-hot pitchers, the A's look like a strong play to cover the run line in this one according to Dunkel, which has Oakland favored by 2. Dunkel Pick: Oakland (-1 1/2). Here are all of today's games.

                  Six-Pack for Sunday

-- Funny how the Dodgers struggled while they had young GM who went to Harvard, but now that they canned him and hired a more veteran guy to run the operation. they're winning. Think there's a connection?

-- Odd how with Kris Benson getting traded for Jorge Julio, attention focused on those two, the key player in the trade is throw-in John Maine, who is helping the Mets bigtime.

-- I toyed with idea of investing in Brady Quinn to win the Heisman last week; he was +$220 to win. Luckily for me, I passed, because a 14-10 win on national TV doesn't win many awards. Heisman race tightened up this weekend, but would still think Quinn is the favorite.

-- Lot less penalties called in college football games, which is why lot of college games have a better flow to them than the pro games do. The NFL game is so over-officiated.

-- Is Tiger Stadium at LSU only bigtime D-IA field in this country that has the goal posts with two poles in ground, instead of one?

-- Ohio State-Texas next week; let the hype begin.

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping1st college football Saturday

                    13) Montana State 19, Colorado 10; couple of 4-8 seasons out in Boulder, and those restrictions on recruiting will get lifted, and strippers will become part of the recruiting process again.

                    12) Bad day for Big 12: Kansas State 24, Illinois State 23, in a game where K-State scored on punt return and blocked punt. If they struggle that badly with a I-AA team, major red flag.

                    11) USC 50, Arkansas 14. But Nick Saban is one of the 5 best football coaches in America. It is time to face facts, America: Pete Carroll is a great college coach, and was 34-33 in the NFL

                    10) By the way, there appears to be bitter struggle going on for Arkansas' QB job, with the two players not speaking to each other on sidelines. The new offensive coordinator was the HS coach of the freshman upstart QB, so figure out who is going to be the starter, over the long haul.

                    9) Tennessee 35, Cal 18. Huge sigh of relief in Knoxville, and the questions remains for Ole Miss faithful-- Why did you fire David Cutcliffe? He had six winning years out of seven.

                    8) Rice led crosstown rival Houston 30-14 in third quarter, but more experienced Cougars rallied to win 31-30. Encouraging debut for suddenly pass-happy Owls, under coach Graham.

                    7) Arizona QB Willie Tuitama is best QB you've never seen on TV-- Wildcats are only Pac-10 club never to play in Rose Bowl game, but Tuitama might change that before he's done.

                    6) Syracuse was 6-19/50 passing with a senior QB; they need a good QB up there. Wake Forest ran for 247 yards in a 20-10 win that was tied with 5:00 to play.

                    5) Rushing yardage in Oklahoma's 24-17 win vs UAB: 141 for the Sooners, 135 for UAB. Either Blazers are pretty good club in C-USA, or the Sooners are hurting playing a backup QB.

                    4) New Mexico State had 16 penalties for 162 yards Thursday in their 30-15 win vs SE Louisiana. Too sloppy for sure, but at least the Aggies didn't lose to a I-AA team, like New Mexico did, dropping 17-6 decision to Portland State.

                    3) Richmond 13, Duke 0. Hoop practice starts October 15.

                    2) NC State's passing stats Saturday: 7-13/44. Not exactly the kind of numbers that give you hope for when they play the ACC's big boys, which they will be very soon.

                    1) Purdue 60, Indiana State 35; it was 26-21 at half. Either the Boilers have a horrible defense (Sycamores had 379 total yds) or Indiana State is hell of a I-AA ballclub. I'm not sure Boilers would score 60 against Sycamores in basketball, by the way.

                      Us Open

                      ROUND 3

Fernando Gonzalez (+105) vs. Andy Murray (-115)

This should be a great match between two players who got a tough draw to have to meet this early at the U.S. Open.

Murray is playing sensational tennis since famed coach Brad Gilbert started working with him after Wimbledon. The 19-year-old Scotsman has made it to one final, two semifinals, and one quarterfinal in the four tourneys he’s played since Wimbledon. He also became the only player not named Rafael Nadal to beat the world’s No. 1 Roger Federer this year when he beat him in Cincinnati just before the U.S. Open.

His current play is the reason he’s favored here, even though he has a lower ranking (19th) than Gonzalez (11th).

Gilbert has been trying to get Murray to play smarter, more tactical tennis and you can see the teenager being more patient than he was at the start of the year. That’s good heading into his match with Gonzalez because the Chilean likes to use longer rallies to his advantage and work his opponent around the court.

Gonzalez has a strong all-round game but doesn’t have the power of Murray on serve or forehand. If Murray is patient and can get his first serve working, he should be able to advance in this one.

Gonzalez won the only previous meeting between the two, which was on carpet last year in Switzerland.

                      Prediction: Murray -115

Serena Williams (-130) vs. Anna Ivanovic (+120)

Serena opened as a heavier favorite in this match, but savvy bettors picked up on a few things from her first round match against Huntachova and action has sided with Ivanovic.

Williams was fortunate to get past Huntachova, who was up 4-1 in the first set before giving the set and the match away with unforced errors. When Huntachova wasn’t choking in that match, she was moving Williams all over the court and managed to score some relatively easy points. Serena’s lack of conditioning was apparent and it could catch up to her against in-form Ivanovic.

The younger Williams sister missed six months this season due to injuries and dealing with family issues, according to reports. Whatever the reason, she is hitting the ball well but needs more time to get into game shape.

Ivanovic, meanwhile, might be in the best form of her career. She is fresh off a title at the Rogers Cup in Montreal prior to the U.S. Open. However, she needs to be better on her first serve than she has been so far if she wants to get past Serena.

Ivanovic was less than 50 percent on first serves in Rounds 1 and 2 and she was broken four times in the first round. Serena has too much power on her return and it will cost Ivanovic if she doesn’t sharpen up.

                      Ivanovic +120

                      Other picks
Petrova -205 over Golovin... Kuznetsova -145 over Jankovic... Blake -215 over Moya

FOR THE EARLY BIRDS. NFL WEEK 1 LINE MOVES

Miami at Pittsburgh (Thursday) – The line opened Pittsburgh -5 and is down to -4. Expect it to dip even more, perhaps even down to a field goal. There’s tremendous buzz about the Dolphins this season, especially now that Daunte Culpepper appears recovered from a knee injury.

Denver at St. Louis – The Broncos opened -3 ½ and currently are at -3. That’s where the line figures to stay.

New York Jets at Tennessee – The Titans opened -2 ½ and are up to -3. The move up isn’t because of the Titans signing Kerry Collins. He’s an upgrade on Billy Volek, but most likely Collins won’t be ready for the opener. The change in the pointspread is because the Jets look plain awful. They won’t be getting any help (at least for the first six weeks) from Curtis Martin either. No matter how bad the Jets might look, though, don’t expect the line to climb higher. If anything it might go down to 2 ½ because the Titans are also a bad team.

Baltimore at Tampa Bay – The Bucs opened -4 and are at -3. Expect buy-back on Tampa Bay, though, before a probable closing at -3 ½. Baltimore looks improved with Steve McNair at quarterback, but it has dropped 12 of its last 13 road games.

Buffalo at New England – The Patriots have gone from -8 to -8 ½. This is dead number area. The public may push it to -9 or higher remembering how good the Patriots looked against the Redskins last week and maybe thinking about how New England has defeated Buffalo in 10 of the past 11 meetings.

Cincinnati at Kansas City – Very early, the Chiefs were -4 ½. The line was taken down for a while and now, after Carson Palmer’s smashing performance this past Monday, the line has been adjusted to Chiefs -3. Considering how great Palmer and the Bengals looked against the Packers, the line could shrink to -2 ½.

Seattle at Detroit – The Seahawks opened -3 ½ and are either there or -4. Don’t expect any different number to emerge.

Atlanta at Carolina – The Panthers are -4 ½. Solid number.

Philadelphia at Houston – The Eagles opened -3 and are up to -3 ½ with Donovan McNabb having an impressive preseason. This line probably holds at 3 ½.

New Orleans at Cleveland – Some places opened Cleveland -2 ½. Now the line is -3 and could reach 3 ½ soon. A number of wise guys already have gotten involved with the Browns here.

Dallas at Jacksonville – The Jaguars are a steady -3. This may not be a big-handle game for the books. The number is real solid.

Chicago at Green Bay – The Bears are -3, but this game probably goes to at least -3 ½. It’s hard to make a case for the home underdog Packers with their rookie guards against such a tough defense even if Bears coach Lovie Smith is foolish enough to stick with Rex Grossman.

San Francisco at Arizona – The Cardinals are -7 ½. Look for them to get bet up. It’s their first game in a new stadium and there’s going to be plenty of hype and optimism.

Indianapolis at New York Giants – The Colts opened -3 ½ and are down to -3. The public loves Indy and Peyton Manning, but perhaps not in this spot. This is the first NBC Sunday night game, so money may continue to come on the home underdog.

Minnesota at Washington (Monday) – Washington opened -6 and is down to -5 ½. Considering how bad the Redskins looked in preseason, the public may keep away from them even though Clinton Portis may be OK to start. Don’t be shocked if the line gets down to -4 ½ by post.

San Diego at Oakland (Monday) – San Diego opened as a 2 ½-point road favorite and is up to -3. The line, though, may go back down since Philip Rivers didn’t look good in his last preseason game and will be making his first road start. The Chargers also lost their offensive left tackle, Roman Oben.
