        BC,

Thanks a million for trying to keep this updated! The fact is, though, that this thresad was a misfire this morning. It was accidentally started with info from yesterday so dj and I started a fresh thread.
I wish I had noticed earlier! I could have saved you all that work!
        Thanks again, BC!

          Football Line Watch

          NCAAF LINE WATCH

Florida Atlantic at Clemson (-32), total 44

Florida Atlantic recently found its Clemson expert in the unlikeliest of places.

Tight end Paul Muse was actually a member of the Tigers until he was dismissed from the team on Aug. 16. Ironically, he decided to transfer to Florida Atlantic.

The 6-foot-5, 255-pound Muse can’t actually play with the Owls because NCAA transfer rules will force him to sit out the season, but he has been practicing with the team.

Muse was a high school teammate of FAU freshman tight end Jamari Grant.

“He told me good things about FAU,” Muse said.

          Wisconsin at Bowling Green(-10 1/2), total 48

Bowling Green starter Anthony Turner is suspended for the opener against the Badgers, leaving the quarterbacking duties squarely in the hands of redshirt freshman Freddie Barnes.

Falcons head coach Gregg Brandon is a big fan of the athleticism Barnes bring to the table, but frankly, the change shouldn`t affect the Badgers` game plan too much. Barnes is replacing another mobile quarterback in Turner, who had more carries than completions in his limited time last year.

Books appear to have reacted to Turner`s suspension, dropping the total by 2 1/2 points over the last three days.

The teams met last year in Wisconsin, with the Badgers covering the 1 1/2-point spread in a 56-42 shootout win. Today`s "home" game for the Falcons will be played in Cleveland.

San Jose State at Washington (-20), total 50

The Huskies lead their series with the Spartans 9-0 SU, but have failed to cover the spread in each of their meetings this decade.

San Jose State, picked to finish sixth in the WAC in both coaches and media polls, will likely start Adam Tafralis at quarterback. But also expect JUCO transfer Sean Flynn to take some snaps.

Whoever takes the snaps for the Spartans is likely to hand off the rock to running back Yonus Davis quite a bit. Davis`s 6.7 yards per carry in 2005 was the fourth-best average in the NCAA.

Washington`s new spread offense makes its debut, intended to showcase the talents of quarterback Isaiah Stanback.

The Huskies hope Stanback can revers their recent losing trend in season openers: they haven`t won an opener straight-up since 2001 and have failed to cover in each of their last three.

Akron at Penn State (-18), total 41 1/2

It might be a quieter crowd cheering on the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Penn State University has banned alcohol from parking lot tailgate parties, as has the University of Georgia, in an effort to make home games a safer environment for students and non-students alike.

A spokesman for the school told ESPN that 353 students went straight from Penn State home games to the emergency room due to alcohol last season, more than double the number of similar trips in 2003.

Penn State was 5-2 ATS at home last year. They beat South Florida and Cincinnati at Beaver Stadium to start their 11-1 2005 season, but failed to cover the double-digit spread in either game.

Utah at UCLA (-3), total 54

The UCLA Bruins booked a difficult season opener when they invited Utah to the Rose Bowl. Injuries and suspensions have rendered their task even more difficult.

Joe Cowan, the Bruins’ top returning receiver, is out for Saturday’s game with a knee injury, stripping new quarterback Ben Olson of his most reliable target.

A bigger problem is UCLA’s decimated defense. Starting linebackers John Hale and Eric McNeal, nickel back Michael Norris and backup safety Robert Kibble are all out for Saturday’s game due to various ailments, off-field incidents and academic transgressions.

That’s a lot of missing bodies for a back seven that returned only two starters from last year’s squad, especially with Brett Ratliff at the helm of Utah’s high-powered offense.

The Utes were a disappointing 4-8 ATS in 2005, but won both of Ratliff’s starts to end the year despite being an underdog in each game. The Ratliff-led offense put up 41 points against BYU to end the regular season and hung 38 points on Georgia Tech in the Emerald Bowl.

          Marshall at West Virginia (-21 ½), total 47 ½

The suspension of Marshall’s top wide receiver from last year, Hiram Moore, opens the door for Marcus Fitzgerald to make a name for himself on national TV.

Younger brother of NFL star Larry, the junior wideout will be Marshall’s go-to target as the Herd tries to trample the heavily favored Mountaineers.

“His heart is the size of the state of West Virginia,” Marshall head coach coach Mark Snyder told reporters this week. “We were going to count on Marcus. We`re really going to have to count on him now.”

Marshall has been a thorn in the side of monster opponents in recent years, as well as bettors who like to back heavy favorites.

The Herd has been a double-digit underdog against five BCS conference teams over the last three seasons. Their 1-4 SU record might not impress, but their 5-0 ATS record certainly should.

          Vanderbilt at Michigan (-26 ½), total 48

Covering the big spread at the Big House has become a big task for the Wolverines.

Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Jackson announced that starting tailback Cassen Jackson-Garrison will start on Saturday afternoon, despite undergoing an appendectomy just three weeks ago. He was listed as “out indefinitely” following the procedure.

Jackson-Garrison led the Commodores in rushing yards and touchdowns last year and averaged 5.6 yards per carry, double the average of other Vandy rushers.

The Commodores went 3-0 ATS last year as double-digit road dogs.

SMU at Texas Tech (-26 ½), total 53

Earlier this week, Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach called his Red Raiders “soft” for not practicing through small injuries and “complacent” due to their lack of focus.

Now Leach is complaining about the lack of vocal leadership on this year’s team.

The biggest concern for Texas Tech backers, however, is the removal of receivers Jarrett Hicks and Michael Crabtree from their lineup for Saturday’s game against the Mustangs. Both had last-minute eligibility issues.

The 6-foot-4 Hicks was the top red zone target in the Red-Raiders’ pass-happy “Air Raid” offense last year, leading the team with 10 touchdown catches. Freshman Crabtree was making a big impression in camp.

Sophomore Graham Harrell starts at quarterback for the Raiders, the first time in five years the team hasn’t had a fifth-year starter lining up behind center.

Texas Tech was 4-2 ATS as a double-digit favorite last year.

North Texas at Texas (-41), total 53 ½

It could be a Texas-sized trap for bettors on Saturday afternoon, as the Longhorns’ new quarterback Colt McCoy gets his first taste of actual college ball in a game that amounts to little more than a tuneup for next week’s game against Ohio State.

It’s the third time in the last five years that these teams have met to open the season. Texas covered the 26-point spread two years ago, but failed to meet the 35-point in 2002. North Texas failed to score in both games.

That could change with a healthy Jamario Thomas in the North Texas backfield.

Yes, his monstrous 2004 numbers were boosted with five 200-yard games against Sun Belt opponents. But no matter how you dissect it, leading the nation in rushing as a freshman is impressive.

Nagging hamstring issues limited Thomas to 361 yards in his sophomore season. Not surprisingly the Mean Green’s record dropped from 7-5 in 2004 to 2-9 last year.

Memphis at Mississippi (-3), total 40

For the first time in years, Ole Miss will have the top running back in this annual matchup.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis plays his first meaningful game since November of 2004 on Sunday, suiting up for the Rebs after spending two years as Indiana’s workhorse.

Green-Ellis had 456 carries as a freshman and sophomore, led the team in rushing both years and ran over Penn State for 203 yards in his highlight game as a freshman.

The Tigers play their first game without DeAngelo Williams, who carried or caught the ball a whopping 930 times for Memphis over the last three years.

Memphis is 3-2 ATS against SEC opponents over the last three years, but lost last year’s season opener to Ole Miss as two-point dogs.

                  Hot Streaks

Jon Lieber (Philadelphia Phillies) - After dealing away All-Star slugger Bobby Abreu and deciding to pack up the season, the Phillies now find themselves in the middle of the National Leage Wild Card chase. They can attribute their recent push to guys like Jon Lieber, who`s 2-0 in his last three starts with a 2.91 ERA. He`ll face Oscar Villarreal and the Atlanta Braves today in Game 1 of a double-header. Oddsmakers have yet to release a line.

John Maine (New York Mets) - Maine has filled in quite nicely in the Mets` rotation. He`s started 12 games this season and put up a very respectable 3.50 ERA. Over his last three trips to the hill, he`s 2-0 while giving up just one walk per game. He`s on the road tonight in Houston as a -127 favorite against Jason Hirsh and the Astros.

Josh Johnson (Florida Marlins) - Johnson continues to surprise bettors and batters this season. When pitching away from home, he`s 6-3 with a 2.69 ERA while giving up just three round-trippers. Tonight he`ll face the struggling Ben Sheets and the Milwaukee Brewers as a +117 underdog.

                  Cold streaks

Scott Baker (Minnesota Twins) - After a promising finish to the season last year, Baker has disappointed on the mound this season. Over his last three games, he`s 1-2 with a horrendous 9.84 ERA. He`s in tough tonight against the powerhouse New York Yankees, away from home where he`s just 1-4. Oddsmakers have set the Twins as +153 underdogs.

Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) - Verlander has begun to slide somewhat for the Tigers. He`s 15-7 on the season, but just 1-2 in his last three with a 7.13 ERA while walking more than three batters per game. He squares off against Joe Saunders and the Angels tonight as a -160 favorite.

Brad Penny (Los Angeles Dodgers) - The Dodgers sit three games up on the Padres in the National League West and with their ace Brad Penny struggling, the gap may get even closer. He`s 1-2 in his last three while giving up four walks per outing with a 7.80 ERA. Tonight he`s a -161 favorite against Aaron Cook and the Colorado Rockies.

                  Other notables

Danny Haren (Oakland Athletics) - 5-4 at home with a 2.77 ERA.

A.J. Burnett (Toronto Blue Jays) - 6-6 season record, averaging just under five strikeouts per game.

Mark Buehrle (Chicago White Sox) - 2-1 in his last three with a 3.38 ERA.
