                    Six-Pack for Saturday
                    The Fantasy Football Edition...........

-- Wali Lundy is your sleeper running back. Houston is an improved team, and Lundy is a solid runner.

-- Jon Kitna (Detroit) will be the most improved QB in NFL, because he is now in charge of running Martz Madness.

-- Sleeper WR? Devery Henderson, Saints. They dumped Donte' Stallworth, so they must think Henderson can play. Plus, I think Saints will score lot of points this year.

-- When you're taking kickers, you want the kicker from the team that plays either in a dome or in warm weather, with the worst QB, so they stall in red zone all the time. With this in mind, we advise you to take Matt Bryant, Bucs.

-- Odd fact: Joe Horn's backup with Saints is Chris Horn.

-- My fantasy tip to you is this: Look at where guys play in the first week of your playoffs-- if a team is at Green Bay or Buffalo or Cleveland, how can he help you that week? It helps to have guys playing in warm weather in the playoffs.

Saturday's List of 13: Random Labor Day thoughts.......

                      13) Greece 101, US 95. Disappointing score from semifinals of World Basketball Championships, but credit to the Greeks, who shot 62% from the floor, 76% in the second and third quarters. When a team bludgeons you to death with pick-and-rolls, like Greece did, you either switch all screens or go to a zone. Is that so hard to figure out? Obviously, the Greeks know more about basketball than we do.

                      12) Maybe the Greek coach can get a VISA commercial this winter: "You don't know me, but my team kicked the butts of the guy's team who does the American Express commercials"

                      11) The last two games of tournament, US shot 19-68 (27.9%) from outside arc. The dilemma becomes when guy like Kirk Hinrich is your best shooter, he's also your least athletic defender, and you're trying to pressure. Hard to have both when all your guys aren't good shooters. By the way, how about Gilbert Arenas saying he feigned an injury because he thought he was going to cut in favor of Hinrich? Classy.

                      10) Really wish this tournament was held every year; it is the highest level of basketball there is, way better than clutch-and-grab, dribble-dominated NBA tilts. At some point, the powers that be in New York will realize that international rules are the way to go for the NBA.

                      9) The only two sports with an illegal defense rule are NBA and Arena Football. One is a minor league, the other charges $1,000 a ticket for courtside seats. Lets grow up and let teams play any defense they want. It makes for a better product.

                      8) I don't think the Americans have anything to be ashamed of; they competed hard, were good representatives of our country, but as a whole, basketball has improved all over the world by leaps and bounds, so there is international parity now, and that's good, if you like to watch games. Its bad if you have to coach the American team, because American players come from a polluted system.

                      7) Bottom line is this: the NBA is the most overrated entity in sports today. It is a league with tremendous athletes and an inferior style of play that focuses on individuals rather than teams. Until that changes, these results in the international tournaments will stay the same, because teams that play as one will usually beat teams that play as five individuals.

Elsewhere, as I pout about basketball and get ready for football…..
                      6) People will buy anything: Girl at work today had "Boston Massacre 2" t-shirt on, 11 days after the Bronx Bombers' five-game sweep at Fenway ended.

                      5) How would you like to be the guy playing Andre Agassi at the US Open? The whole stadium screaming their lungs out for you to lose. Must be fun.

                      4) Best baseball trade of decade? How about Mark Mulder to St Louis for Dan Haren, Kiko Calero and Daric Barton (21-yr old hitting prospect still in minors)? Scoff at Moneyball all you like, but lets see Brian Cashman make the playoffs with a $60 million payroll.

                      3) Speaking of trades, think Omar Minaya is kicking himself for not trading Lastings Milledge at deadline for a pitching ace? Milledge is now in minors, as Shawn Green is patrolling right field in Flushing.

                      2) Is it mathematically possible that the NL Wild Card team could finish below .500? That would be almost as much fun as it would have been had Willy Taveras broken Dimaggio's hit streak record, the most overrated record in sports history.

                      1) As if I haven't babbled on enough about the Devil Rays this summer, now comes this: Thursday, in Rays' 134th game of the year, Carl Crawford DH'd, for the first time all season. This guy is one of the ten best players in baseball, probably the best athlete in the sport (had his choice of PG at UCLA, QB at Nebraska or baseball). Point is: the Devil Rays stink; they need Crawford's bat in the lineup every freakin' day. If he needs a rest, let him DH; two days in a row, if necessary. But for the love of Pete, how does this guy get days off but not DH until August 31?

Vanderbilt covered eight of nine as road dog last two years; they'll have new QB with Cutler gone, but Johnson has gradually increased Vandy's talent level, and playing in SEC, they won't be awed by Big House. Michigan is 4-7-1 vs spread as home favorite; they covered four of last 12 home openers. Wolverines have younger OL this season.

Northern Illinois is 9-4 vs spread as road dog since '01, 26-10 SU last three years. Ohio State goes to Texas next week; they're
18-9 vs spread as home favorite, but will be holding some stuff back for Longhorns. Buckeyes lost nine starters on defense, so NIU's senior QB could do some work. OSU has covered 11 of last 13 home openers.

Akron has all five starters on offensive line back from last year's team that went to bowl; Zips lost 48-10 on this field two years ago (+15) but they've covered six of last nine road openers. Penn State plays Notre Dame next week; they're breaking in new QB in Morelli (11 games, no starts) so expect them to run ball more. Lions covered three of last 11 home openers.

Oregon covered five of last six games vs Stanford, winning last two games at this site, 35-0/41-14. Ducks covered their Pac-10 opener in fifteen of last nineteen seasons. Cardinal is 5-0-1 vs spread in last six season openers; they're 20-13 as road dog (4-0 under Harris), 16-4 vs spread in September and have senior QB with 24 career starts. Both sides have experienced OLs, with Stanford's having combined 122 starts.

Cal Bears are shaky at QB, young on OL, loaded everywhere else; they're 16-9 vs spread in last 25 road games. Tedford has brought in OC from Northwestern, so they're going to run more of spread offense, while keeping star RB Lynch in mix. Huge game for Vols, which was 5-6 last year, a disaster in Knoxville. Vols covered just nine of last 32 tries as home favorite. Will return of OC Cutcliffe (coached both Manning brothers) restore Ainge's confidence?

Navy is 26-11 SU last three years, 12-6 vs spread as favorite, 6-4 at home; they have deep OL and are very good. East Carolina has senior QB with 25 career starts; they were 5-1 vs spread on road in Holtz's first year in '05- they have young OL this season. Navy has new QB, but four seniors starting on OL.

Utah is 21-4 vs spread as road dog since '97, and covered road opener nine of last 12 years; they're 22-8 vs spread in non-MWC road games, and covered eight of last 12 on grass, all of which makes them live dog at Rose Bowl, where Bruins are 8-3 in last 11 tries as home favorite, covered 10 of last 12 home openers. Bruins are 30-12-1 vs spread in last 43 non-Pac 10 games. Both sides have inexperienced QBs.

Pittsburgh is 8-5 vs spread in last thirteen home openers, 6-1 in last seven tries as home favorite; senior QB Palko is in third year as starter, second in Cavanuagh's system. Virginia not only lost five starters on both sides of ball, they lost both coordinators, their QB and three starters on OL. New QB is good passer but far less mobile, which makes it easier for defensive whiz Wannstedt to pressure passer.

Washington State covered nine of last 12 road openers, 14 of last 21 on grass and is 10-7 as road dog since '00; they have good OL and junior QB who has already made 16 career starts. Auburn is 9-3 in last dozen tries as home favorite, but they've lost three of last four openers, and have SEC games the next two weeks, but doubt they'll be looking ahead after shocking loss to Ga Tech in last year's opener. Third defensive coordinator in last three years for Auburn.

Notre Dame has senior QB in Quinn, four senior starters on OL and has covered nine of last 13 as road favorite. Georgia Tech failed to cover last five tries as home dog, but they did win at Auburn in opener last year. Tech has senior QB with 36 career starts- they've played in nine straight bowls, and are 11-9 vs spread in last 20 games as underdog. Irish has new kicker and punter, and has Penn State next week.

USC waxed Arkansas last year in LA, 70-17 (-30), but with major personnel losses, can Carroll keep recent trends going (8-1 vs spread in road openers, 29-16 as favorite last four years)? Arkansas brought in HS coach to teach new offense (star recruit played for coach last year) but star RB McFadden is doubtful with toe injury. Hogs are 8-4 vs spread as home dog; they have 19 of 22 starters back, if McFadden starts, but are shaky at QB.

Houston has 4th-year coach and senior QB who made all 36 starts in Briles era; they're 3-2-1 as road fave under Briles, and have eight of top 10 back on OL. Cougars won three of last four vs crosstown rival Rice (five miles apart), with UH winning last losing here, 10-7. Owls have ditched option for spread offense, but their players are, for most part, ill-suited to run it. Rice is 21-7 vs spread as home dog, but almost everything about Owls this season will be new.

Clemson has new QB in senior Proctor; they play at Boston College next, so could be holding back vs Florida Atlantic squad that is 6-5 as road dog and covered its first road game in each of last two seasons. Tigers covered just four of last thirteen home openers and nine of last 24 as home favorite, but they're 9-4 vs spread outside the ACC.

                        Other Games of Interest
-- Michigan State is 7-16 vs spread as home favorite since 2001, 4-11 vs spread in last 15 non-league games, 4-11 as favorite of 10+ pts. Idaho is once again coached by Dennis Erickson; they are 5-10-1 in last 16 as road dog.

-- Wisconsin beat Bowling Green 56-42 last year (-1.5) at home; Falcons are 6-2 as home dog, but QB Jacobs left school early, which leaves void under center. Badgers are 9-11 as road favorite, 5-8 vs spread on grass- they had 388 rushing yards vs BG last year.

-- Intrastate rivalry with Marshall-West Va; much bigger game for Herd, which covered just five of last fifteen as road dog. WVU 4-9 as home favorite. There were spying issues with these two teams during spring practice.

-- Washington is 8-15 vs spread in last 23 tries as home favorite; they won last two meetings vs San Jose 34-10/21-6; hard to lay three TDs with team that has total of three wins in last two seasons. San Jose State 5-12 in last seventeen as road dog.

-- Hawai'i beat Alabama 37-29 three years ago in paradise (+2.5); Warriors covered 11 of last 16 games on grass, but are 4-7 vs spread in last 11 road openers. Long trip, this is. Tide is 5-9 last 14 tries as home favorite, 18-26 in last 44 overall when favored; they're breaking in new QB, and have three sophomores starting on offensive line.

-- Utah State had one of its players arrested for selling drugs during summer, never a good sign; they're 12-24 as road dog since '99, and 2-5 in last seven road openers. Wyoming last two series meetings (43-42/48-21). Cowboys are 5-3 as favorite under Glenn. Wyoming put down artificial turf field this spring

-- Western Michigan has 11 fifth-year seniors, a senior QB with 25 career starts and is 7-4 vs spread in last 11 games vs Big 11 teams. Indiana covered 12 of last 17 home openers, is 5-2 vs spread in last seven tries as home favorite, and is 5-1-2 vs spread in last eight games vs MAC teams. Hoosier coach Hoeppner had brain surgery last winter but is said to be OK.

-- Southern Miss covered its road opener 11 of last 14 years; they're 14-6 vs spread on grass, 5-2 in last seven as road dog- they have nine starters back on offense, but have new starting QB. Florida covered seven of last nine non-SEC games; they want to run ball more, but have young OL. Will be interesting to see how much time freshman phenom QB Tebow gets under center.

-- Syracuse has only 10 starters back from 1-10 team; they're 10-17 vs spread in last 27 games on grass, 9-16 as road dog, but they have covered 10 of last 15 road openers. Wake Forest is just 6-18 as home favorite since '93, and 3-9 vs spread in last dozen non-ACC games; they have 19 starters back, but it is always dicey to lay heavy lumber with Wake.

-- Texas Tech won last three games vs SMU (24-14/58-10/27-13); Raiders are 11-1-1 vs spread in last 13 home openers, and are
25-16 vs spread as favorites under Leach (19-9 at home). For first time in five years, their starting QB isn't a senior, although he is talented. SMU is getting better, but they're 3-14-1 vs spread in last 18 September road games.

-- Oklahoma has new QB now, one who was playing WR during spring; he is a senior, and he can hand off to Heisman hopeful Peterson, but teams will put nine in box until Thompson burns them thru air. UAB is 19-10 vs spread as road dog since '99, and are 11-4 vs spread in September road games. They won't be awed, losing 17-10 in last year's opener at Knoxville. Oklahoma is 7-12 vs spread last 19 times they were favored.

-- BYU covered its road opener in only three of last 18 years, are 5-12 vs spread in non-league road games, but they are 10-7 vs spread as dog since '03. Arizona covered only three of last 17 as home favorite, but with Tuitama sparking rally last season, lot of optimism in Tucson right now, maybe little too much. Arizona is improving, but they've covered just 5 of last 22 as a favorite.

-- Army covered one of last seven games as road favorite; they beat Arkansas State 38-10 last year, as 8.5-pt home favorite. ASU covered 13 of last 17 as home dog; this is first time since '95 they played their opener at home.

-- North Texas covered one of last six vs Big 12 teams; they're
4-8 vs spread as road dog, 11-19 on grass; they lost last two games vs Texas (27-0/65-0). Longhorns have new QB, and are playing Ohio State next week, so they should have some rust. Texas is 21-13 vs spread in last 34 tries as home favorite

-- UL-Lafayette covered six of last eight as road dog; their coach is old Va Tech guy- Ragin' Cajuns blocked 23 kicks in his four years at helm. LSU covered four of 12 as home favorite, one of last five if favored by double digits. LSU beat ULL 48-0 four years ago (-27).
