    Six-Pack for Sunday

-- Wasn't hard to read between lines in Troy Aikman's Hall of Fame speech Saturday; he didn't seem to like playing for Jimmy Johnson too much, instead heaping praise on Norv Turner. Aikman is the next big star in NFL broadcasting; I am guessing he'll replace John Maddon on Sunday night games, when the time comes in a few years.

-- The NFL Network bent over backwards not to show the ceremony's MC, Chris Berman; I only saw him once all day, although you could hear his voice a lot in background.

-- The six presenters are supposed to submit their speech in advance for approval; five of the six presenters did. Guess which one (think black shirt, silver tie) didn't?

-- It was oddly refreshing to hear Warren Moon thanking his agent and presenter, Leigh Steinberg, for making him millions of dollars. They went to the same high school, out in LA, by the way.

-- After seeing Josh Paul, Greg Norton steal bases easily against Javy Lopez Saturday, I'm saying that Beantown has itself some defensive issues until Varitek comes back.

-- This just in: Rocco Baldelli is hurt again. When this guy becomes a free agent, you know he's going to sign up with either Bronx or Beantown, and immediately become Ripken-like, play 160 games, and hit .330. You can just feel it. For now, he's a good-for-nothing, injury-prone guy with ability.

    Sizing up the Big 11...........

Lot of tradition in Big 11 football; the Horseshoe, Hail to the Victors, JoePa, Minneosta blowing games it should win-- but this offseason, Barry Alvarez retired, and Randy Walker died tragically, leaving two gapies holes for new coaches to fill..... Here is our quick glance look at the Big 11 Conference

-- Illinois had only eight takeaways all season, and never won again after being 2-0, and blowing 10-point lead at Cal. They have a freshman QB named Isiah "Juice" Williams, and he is expected to challenge Brasic for playing time, especially if the season gets off to slow start. Zook can recruit, but it takes bit of time for those recruits to mature. Illinois is still rebuilding.

-- Indiana hasn't had winning season in 11 years, but with QB powers throwing to former hooper Hardy, Hoosiers figure to be explosive on offense. Coach Hoeppner had to have a brain tumor removed last December, but is said to be fine. Indiana is on upswing, but they have threw new starters on OL, and could use better placekicking in their close games.

-- Iowa has senior QB and coach who could be running team in NFL if he wanted to; they also have RB Young, one of Big 11's most dynamic RBs. Hawkeyes have Ohio State, Badgers at home, and they don't play Penn State. Iowa's defense and receivers have gotten younger, but with three senior starters on OL and a brilliant coach, iowa will be tough once again.

-- Lloyd Carr is 102-34 in 11 years at Michigan, but 7-5 in Ann Arbor is like Jessica Simpson reading a book; not supposed to happen. QB Henne is back for his third year as starter, but there are two new coordinators. Expect Wolverines to be lot more aggressive and emotional, while their OL is going to be smaller and quicker. This is a bounceback year for Michigan.

-- As long as an OL with three new starters can keep senior QB Stanton upright, Spartans will score ton of points, since their WRs, RBs are deep and talented. Team imploded last year after special teams gaffe near end of first half in Ohio St game caused 10-point swing-- will these Spartans be tougher mentally than last year's were? They play Notre Dame, Ohio State and Michigan in four-week span in middle of season.

-- Minnesota is going to get its on-campus stadium, now they need to replace two four-year starters on OL, while sprucing up their defense (added two new defensive coaches). Expect Gophers to throw ball more with third-year starting QB Cupito Mason and his coaches all signed extensions last winter, as they were rightly rewarded for six bowl games in seven years.

-- 31-year old Pat Fitzgerald, anchor of Northwestern's Big 11 champs in mid-90's, is new coach after tragic death of Randy Walker this spring. Wildcats are breaking in new QB, they're not playing Indiana or Minnesota, and their OC left for west coast last winter. Emotions will run high in Evanston all year long. It will be very difficult for them to replace Walker, but they do have solid OL and star running back in Sutton.

-- Ohio State plays at Texas in September; teams are ranked #1, #2 in country, despite Buckeyes replacing nine starters on defense. Tressel is 50-13 in five years in Columbus. They've got senior QB in Smith, with senior Zwick an insurance policy with some experience. They are breaking in new kicker, so if that game in Austin is close late, Buckeyes will be depending on a rookie to bail them out with late FG.

-- Penn State was 11-1 last year, after being 7-16 the two years before, but has new QB this season, and four new starters on OL. QB Morelli was highly-touted recruit two years ago- now he gets to start-- he better be good, because there's nothing behind him. All four starters from secondary are also gone, so this is Penn State ballclub with a ton of new faces, but one of greatest coaches ever to put the new pieces together.

-- Purdue missed bowl for first time in nine years last season; as result, there are five new coaches, four on offense. Purdue hired Ed Zaunbrecher (formerly of Marshall, Florida) to be its QB coach- he has good track record (Pennington, Leftwich, Grossman) with QB's, so young Painter has a support system. Only two starters start on OL. Their pass defense is suspect, to be kind- no returning DBs had a pick last season.

-- Barry Alvarez has gone upstairs to be AD, leaving job to former defensive coordinator Bret Bielema; he has only three starters back on offense, but eight on defense, but he does have senior QB in Stocco. Four Badger WR/TEs were drafted in April, so there are holes. They dumbed-down schedule to point where anything but 4-0 non-conference record would be a disaster. Offensive line will have lot of new faces.

                    Hot Streaks

Scott Olsen (Florida Marlins ) - Another impressive young arm takes the mound for the surprising Marlins. Olsen hasn`t lost since June 28 (a span of seven starts) while striking out 37 batters in 41 innings, including double-digit strike out totals in two of his last three. The Marlins are good value again today as oddsmakers have them listed at -119 at home against the Dodgers and a struggling Mark Hendrickson (see below).

John Smoltz (Atlanta Braves) - "Old Faithful" hasn`t been defeated in his last nine starts, pitching at least seven innings in all but two while racking up five wins. A revamped Braves bullpen has helped, with newly acquired Bob Wickman saving both of Smoltz`s last two victories. Atlanta is favored at -154 today in Cincinnati.

Livan Hernandez (Washington Nationals ) - One of the big names who didn`t get traded at the deadline, Hernandez has picked up three consecutive victories and hasn`t lost since late June. The Nationals are 7-0 in Hernandez`s last seven starts and are dogged at +157 today in San Diego with the total set at 8.

                    Cold Streaks

Mark Hendrickson (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Hendrickson has struggled with his move to the National League, going winless since being acquired from the Devil Rays in June. Overall, he has only one win in his last eight starts. L.A. takes on the Florida Marlins today with oddsmakers listing the Dodgers as +111 underdogs and setting the total at 9.

Jason Johnson (Boston Red Sox ) - Johnson has only one victory in his last 14 starts and has yet to win since joining the Red Sox. Boston faces the Devil Rays today in Tampa Bay as -139 favorites. Johnson sports a 7.49 ERA on the road this year and a 9.00 ERA versus the Rays. The total is set at 11.

Chris Capuano (Milwaukee Brewers) - All-Star Capuano has struggled since the break, going 0-3 with a 6.94 ERA compared to a 10-4 record and tidy 3.21 ERA before the festivities. The good news is, he has a respectable 3.86 ERA against Cardinals this year. Milwaukee is listed as a +116 underdog for today`s tilt in St. Louis with the total set at 9.

                    Other notables:

A.J. Burnett (Toronto Blue Jays) - Burnett has lost two in a row, failing to pitch past the fourth inning in either start.

Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels) - Saunders has yet to lose since being called up to the big club. He`s gone 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in four starts.
