    • Heat score first 16 points in OT, beat Hawks 135-121
      December 10, 2019
      By The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) Duncan Robinson tied a franchise record with 10 3-pointers, Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler each had triple-doubles and the Miami Heat scored 22 unanswered points down the stretch to beat the Atlanta Hawks 135-121 in overtime on Tuesday night.

Kendrick Nunn scored 36 points, one off the Heat rookie record. Adebayo finished with a career-high 30 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Butler had 20 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

And Robinson scored 34 points, on a night when the Heat moved to 11-0 at home.

They had to scramble to get there, down by six with less than a minute left in regulation. But Robinson and Butler made 3s late to tie the game, and the Heat opened overtime on a 16-0 run. It was the NBA's widest margin of victory in an overtime game since Oct. 31, 2009, when Philadelphia beat New York 141-127.

De'Andre Hunter scored 28 points, and Trae Young added 21 points and nine assists for Atlanta - which fell to 0-3 against the Heat this season.

      76ERS 97, NUGGETS 92

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid scored 22 points, including two key free throws with 15.3 seconds left, and Tobias Harris added 20 as Philadelphia beat Denver.

Matisse Thybulle added 13 points for the Sixers, who are 13-0 in Philadelphia. They have won three straight and seven of eight.

Will Barton had 26 points to lead the Nuggets, who have lost three in a row and five of six. Leading scorer Jamal Murray was injured with 6:49 left in the first quarter when he collided with Ben Simmons and didn't return.

      HORNETS 114, WIZARDS 107

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Devonte Graham scored 29 points, Miles Bridges hit a big 3-pointer with 7.7 seconds left and Charlotte beat Washington in a game that featured 20 lead changes.

Terry Rozier scored 17 points, Bridges had 16, P.J. Washington added 15 and Cody Zeller and Bismack Biyombo both had double-doubles as Charlotte wrapped up a five-game homestand with a 2-3 record.

David Bertans scored a career-high 32 points and made eight 3-pointers for Washington. Rui Hachimura added 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who have lost six of seven.

      TRAIL BLAZERS 115, KNICKS 87

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Damian Lillard had 31 points, including eight 3-pointers, and Portland handed New York its 10th straight loss.

Hassan Whiteside added 17 points and 15 rebounds, and the Trail Blazers ended a two-game skid. Portland led by as many as 32.

Julius Randle had 15 points for the Knicks, who have won just four games, fewest in the NBA. They have one win on the road.

The Knicks opened their four-game West Coast trip in disarray after coach David Fizdale was fired on Friday, just hours after he ran practice. Mike Miller was named interim coach, and New York lost 104-103 at home to Indiana the next night.

In Portland, New York faced Carmelo Anthony, who played for the Knicks from 2011-17. Anthony finished with 16 points.

        • Wednesday’s 6-pack

Interesting NFL spreads for Week 15:

          — Houston @ Tennessee (-3)

          — Buffalo @ Pittsburgh (-2.5)

          — Cleveland (-2.5) @ Arizona

          — Rams (-1) @ Dallas

          — Minnesota (-2.5) @ LA Chargers

          — Indianapolis @ New Orleans (-9)

          Quote of the Day:
“[Our recent play] is sickening. [Changes are] tough, but it’s a necessary evil. Right now, we’ve got to play better, and we’re going to play better, and there will be changes. There will be changes. What happened [Sunday] will not happen again. I can’t allow it to happen.”
          Jon Gruden

          Wednesday’s quiz
Which NFL team did Steve Spurrier coach for two seasons?

          Tuesday’s quiz
Of the 32 NFL stadiums, LA Coliseum and Oakland Coliseum have hosted a World Series.

          Monday’s quiz
Steph Curry played his college basketball at Davidson.

          Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

          13) I get it that all retired baseball players speak glowingly of the late Marvin Miller, who was the head of the players’ union; he made them all very rich. If Miller made me rich, I’d want him to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, too.

But as an Oakland A’s fan, I had no great fondness for Miller, who helped institute a system that made the A’s a 2nd-rate franchise, financially. Stephen Strasburg making $35M a year is a bit much; not really sure Miller deserves to be in the Hall of Fame- did he make the game better? Did star players being multi-millionaires improve the game?

I’d rather see Dr Frank Jobe get in the Hall of Fame; surgeons who perform Tommy John surgery have done a hell of a lot more to help baseball than a guy who helped make all the players millionaires.

          12) Speaking of Marvin MIller, Bronx Bombers signed Gerrit Cole to a 9-year, $324M contract late Tuesday night. Cole is 29 years old, so this might be his last contract.

Last three years, Cole started 33-32-33 regular season games; if he does that next season, it works out to $1,090,909.09 per start.

          11) 2020 Bronx Bombers:
          — Gerrit Cole, $36M
          — Giancarlo Stanton, $26M
          — Masahiro Tanaka, $23M
          — Aroldis Chapman $17.2M

That adds up to $101.5M…….for four guys.

Oakland A’s made the playoffs the last two years; their ENTIRE payroll last year?

          $92,178,333

          10) Excellent article on actionnetwork.com about how college bowl betting lines are made; it ain’t easy, especially when you have to make them quickly, with matchups coming out early Sunday afternoon- lines were posted roughly four hours later.

          9) NHL leaders in going over in first period:
          Colorado 23-7, Los Angeles 21-10, Carolina 20-10

NHL leaders in going under in first period:
          Calgary 9-23, Dallas 12-19, Jets/Wild/Penguins 13-17

          8) Baseball stuff:
          — Giants signed P Kevin Gausman to a 1-year deal.
          — Phillies signed SS Didi Gregorius
          — Angels dumped some salary, trading SS Zack Cozart for cash and a prospect.

          7) Random question: Are people allowed to meet at a vegan restaurant?
(Think about it, maybe you’ll chuckle later)

          6) Every player at the Outback Bowl will get a gift suite that includes a Fossil watch; $125 Amazon gift card; Jostens ring; Outback Steakhouse gift card; hat.

All the bowls have gift packages like that.

          5) Funny how Golden State Warriors seem to have disbanded for a year; Draymond Green still plays most of he time, the uniforms are the same, and Steve Kerr still coaches, but with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson not playing, this is a totally different team, one that will be in the NBA Draft Lottery, maybe even getting the first pick.

Would Golden State draft LaMelo Ball, the youngest of the three Ball brothers? Cole Anthony? James Wiseman, the big kid from Memphis?

          4) Major League Baseball will relocate its annual amateur draft to Omaha to try and increase interest; Omaha is where the College World Series is played every year. I’m guessing some of the college coaches in the CWS won’t be thrilled with the potential distractions.

          3) Of course the Miami Marlins move their outfield fences in the year after they trade Stanton, Yelich and Ozuna. Makes perfect sense.

          2) Texas Tech 70, Louisville 57— Cardinals are already the 4th #1 team in country to lose this season and it is only December 11. There aren’t any great teams this year.

          1) ESPN drained every last drop out of the Eli Manning story Monday night; he played really well in the first half but the Giants were shut out in the 2nd half as Manning made what will probably be his last-ever appearance on MNF.

Now America will have to wait a couple years for the next Manning; Eli’s nephew Arch is a 9th-grader at Newman HS in New Orleans, where he already is the starting QB.

            Wednesday's Essentials
            Tony Mejia

Game of the Night - Clippers (-3/219.5) at Raptors, 7 p.m.

Raptors fans are great and there’s obviously a stereotype that Canadians are among the friendliest people on earth, but I would think they’re going to stop short of cheering whenever Kawhi Leonard touches the ball once the actual game starts.

C’mon, they’ll at least stop after the first quarter.

The 2019 Finals MVP is back in town for the first and only time this season since departing for his hometown after leading Toronto to its first NBA title. Returns are always mired by the certainty that the player coming back into town will have to deal with animosity, but that simply won’t be the case here. There should still be extra juice in the Air Canada Centre, so expect a great atmosphere and hopefully a game that lives up to it.

The pregame tribute video has already started making the rounds on social media and fans have been advised to arrive early, so make no mistake that this is going to be similar to Mike Conley returning to Memphis earlier this season or Leonard’s former teammate Tony Parker cycling back through San Antonio during his one season with the Hornets.

Leonard hasn’t beaten the Spurs at AT&T, where he has been booed whenever possible, averaging 20 points, four boards and six assists in a pair of lopsided losses. He fell once with the Raps and earlier this season in a Nov. 29 setback that snapped a seven-game Clippers’ win streak.

He’s 2-2 as a visitor in Toronto, although none of the times he came into Canada carried any special significance prior to him being acquired in a package highlighted by DeMar DeRozan in July of 2018. For what it’s worth, and I don’t think it’s much, Leonard is shooting 32 percent (11-for-34) as a visiting player at the Air Canada Centre. The Spurs went 2-2 in those games.

Leonard should be fresh after Monday’s helping of load maintenance. He spent the Clippers’ 110-99 victory over the Pacers cheering on Paul George as he dominated despite being booed by Indiana fans in his second trip back through town since being moved to Oklahoma City. L.A. improved to 2-1 on its current six-game road trip that ends with a back-to-back Friday and Saturday in Minnesota and Chicago.

Leonard and George are 7-2 as teammates this season despite limited practice time alongside one another. Both losses have come on the road by double-digits as both played poorly by their standards at the Spurs and Bucks. George had yet to debut when L.A. defeated Toronto at Staples 98-88 on Nov. 11. Despite shooting just 2-for-11, Leonard finished with nine points, 11 rebounds and nine assists as the Clips used a 25-10 fourth-quarter to post a comeback win. The Raptors were without point guard Kyle Lowry and key reserve forward Serge Ibaka, while starting small forward OG Anunoby played just two minutes. Lou Williams led all scorers with 21 points.

The Clippers are looking to get to .500 on the road this season – they’re 13-1 at Staples Center – and are already 3.5 games behind the Lakers. Toronto is running third in an Atlantic Division where 1.5 games are separating it from the Celtics an 76ers, but there have been struggles of late. The Raptors struggled to hold off Chicago on Monday night in an ugly game, winning 93-92 to snap a season-worst three-game losing streak. They have failed to cover in any of their last four games, last doing so on Dec. 1.

This will be the first time the Raptors will play an underdog role at the Air Canada Centre all season. Toronto is 9-2 at home (8-3 ATS) but has dropped consecutive games to the Heat and Rockets by double-digits. L.A. is 4-3 SU (3-4 ATS) as a road favorite.

Raps guard Fred VanVleet, who suffered a knee contusion during the losing streak and was dealing with some inflammation, missed the Bulls win but probably returns tonight unless the Raptors plan on being overly cautious.

Shooting guards Landry Shamet (ankle) and Rodney McGruder (hamstring) are close to returning but have been ruled out for this one. Reserve forward JaMychal Green is considered doubtful with a tailbone injury.

If the numbers sticks, this will mark only the fourth time a total will close sitting below 220 in games involving the Clippers. The 'under' is 4-0 in those games.

            Best of the Rest

            Celtics at Pacers (-2/210.5), 7:10 p.m. ET:
Gordon Hayward returned for the Celtics on Monday and looked sharper than expected after a lengthy layoff after a broken hand by finishing 7-for-10 from the field. He's due for more minutes if Marcus Smart can't return from an eye infection, but the plan is for the standout defender to be out there. Domantas Sabonis comes off a 22-rebound game in the loss to the Clippers and point guard Malcolm Brogdon is back from his hand injury, but center Myles Turner has been shaky on offense despite providing his typical shot-blocking presence. The 'under' has prevailed in four straight games involving Indiana and three straight involving Boston.

            Lakers (-7/213) at Magic, 7:10 p.m. ET:
With Avery Bradley due back, the Lakers are set to be at full strength so long as fellow point guard Rajon Rondo returns from a hamstring issue. L.A. has won 11 straight true road games but is just 4-4 ATS in the favorite's role in opposing arenas. A win here would tie the franchise's second-longest road win streak, matching the '71-'72 version. The Magic are still without center Nikola Vucevic, who should miss his 10th straight game but is growing closer to a return. They're 8-4 at Amway Center but are just 1-3 as an underdog.

            Thunder at Kings (-2), 10:10 p.m. ET:
A victory would move the Thunder back to .500 for the first time as they've fought back from a 1-4 start and own a season-best three-game win streak, which include road conquests in Portland and Utah on their current four-game trip. OKC will be looking to hold an opponent under 100 points for the third straight game. Sacramento is hot too, coming off wins at Dallas and Houston in games that came down to the closing seconds. The Kings are searching for their first three-game win streak since last February and finally get back forward Marvin Bagley III, who will return after breaking his thumb in the season opener. It remains to be seen whether he'll start or come off the bench given the success Nemanja Bjelica and Richaun Holmes have had as a tandem.

                RECENCY BIAS

Two weeks ago, we missed the Darius Slayton Over by six yards and stayed away with Uncle Eli under center on Monday. Big mistake. Slayton saw a team-high eight targets and accounted for 75.9 percent of his team’s total air yards even with Golden Tate and Sterling Shepard in the lineup.

This week, Eli Manning and the Giants host the Miami Dolphins, who are giving up 292 yards passing a game over the last three weeks - the league’s third-worst mark. Slayton has averaged over six catches for 96.5 yards in his last four outings, which is almost one-third of the Giants’ entire season to date.

We don’t mind backing Slayton's quarterback in a match that we think will have a welcoming New York crowd at MetLife Stadium for their former starter. We will back Slayton’s receiving total of 69.5 yards and taking the Over.

                DIVISIONAL FIRST-HALF

The Green Bay Packers pace the league in first-half points scored at home at 16.7 per game. Lambeau’s inhabitants have won each of their last three first halves as hosts (3-0 ATS) and are 5-2 ATS versus the first-half spreads at home this year. Green Bay just runs a better offense at home as it has the fifth-best offense (yards per game) at home but rank 31st in yards per game on the road.

The Chicago Bears will stroll into the Cheese Factory on Sunday with their 29th-ranked road offense (yards per game). Mitch Trubisky & Co. are scoring 7.3 first-half points on the road this year and have put up just 10 points over their last three road first halves - zero points in two of those three contests.

We’re backing the Pack and taking Green Bay first-half spread at -3.

                RAVENS TO REST LATE?

Coming off a big win in Buffalo last week, the Baltimore Ravens will take on the New York Jets who could be without their best player, safety Jamal Adams. The Ravens have some bumps and bruises they need to tend to in the short week as well. Lamar Jackson is dealing with a quad injury but will start while TE Mark Andrews returned to practice on Tuesday but is still banged up.

There’s a real chance that the Ravens jump out to a big lead and hold out some of their players later in the game versus the Jets. Baltimore leads the league in first-quarter and first-half points scored, so the table could be easy to set.

The Jets aren’t scaring anyone these days as they have played the four-worst DVOA defenses in five of their last seven games and have seen five of the bottom-seven DVOA offenses over that time as well. But the Jets haven’t played the league’s worst offense this year because that would be impossible. That prestigious title belongs to the J-E-T-S themselves.

We are taking the first-half as the highest-scoring half in this Ravens-Jets matchup, as we hope the Ravens will rest players heading into the second half on the short week versus an inferior opponent.

                RUNAWAY MAGIC

Do you know which quarterback had the most rushing yards last week? Obviously, it was Ryan Fitzpatrick, who ran for 65 yards on seven carries and led his team in rushing. The Miami QB has rushed for 167 yards and three TDs since Week 7 and topped 22 yards rushing in three of his last five games.

In their last four games, the New York Giants are allowing opposing QBs to take off 4.5 times a game and have given up two rushing TDs. Miami is throwing the ball nearly 40 times a game over its last three as the Dolphins’ running game is pretty much nonexistent, giving Fitzpatrick plenty of chances to gain a few yards on the ground.

We’re waiting for the Fitzpatrick rushing total to open and will pounce on the Over on any number below 26 yards and may sprinkle the rushing TD as well.

                THE THIN RECEIVING LINE

There’s thin, and then there’s the Philadelphia Eagles’ WR depth thin. Alshon Jeffrey has been put on the IR leaving Nelson Agholor, J.J. Arcega-Whiteside and Greg Ward as their only receivers and Agholor isn't guaranteed to dress for Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins with a foot issue.

Washington is allowing 376 yards at home this year which has translated to 25.7 points per game, but recently Bill Callahan has whittled those numbers down to 328 yards per game and 19 points since Week 12. This game could feature a run-heavy approach from both offenses which cut into each teams’ total plays.

With just as many tight ends as receivers, we are going to fade the Eagles’ team total and hit the Under on 23.5 - a number Washington hasn’t allowed an opponent to top in three straight games.

                  • Leonard back in Toronto, leads Clippers past Raptors 112-92
                    December 11, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) Kawhi Leonard scored 23 points in his return to Toronto, Lou Williams had 18 and the Clippers won their third straight game Wednesday, beating the slumping Raptors 112-92.

Maurice Harkless scored 14 points and Paul George had 13 as the Clippers evened their road record at 6-6.

Before the game, Leonard received his championship ring from the 2018-19 season, when he helped Toronto beat Golden State in six games for the franchise's first NBA title.

Clippers guard Patrick Beverley scored 11 points in 19 minutes before leaving in the third quarter because of a concussion. Beverley collided with Marc Gasol's shoulder as the Raptors center was setting a screen.

Pascal Siakam scored 24 points, Norman Powell had 22 and OG Anunoby 13 as the Raptors lost for the fourth time in five games and dropped their third straight at home. Toronto set a franchise record with nine straight home victories to begin the season.

                    LAKERS 96, MAGIC 87

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - LeBron James had 25 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds to help Los Angeles beat Orlando.

Anthony Davis had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who have won 13 of 14. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 15 points for Los Angeles.

Jonathan Isaac led Orlando with 19 points. Evan Fournier had 18 and Aaron Gordon finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Lakers weren't crisp offensively at the start of the game but didn't have to be. Los Angeles limited Orlando to a season-low first quarter shooting of 19% (4 of 21) and turned that into a 26-9 lead.

                    PACERS 122, CELTICS 117

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Malcolm Brogdon scored 29 points and Aaron Holiday scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter to help Indiana rally past Boston.

Indiana trailed 94-84 after three quarters but took the lead for good on the first of Holiday's two 3-pointers with 4:16 left.

Kemba Walker scored a season-high 44 points and had seven assists - not enough to extend the Celtics' four-game winning streak.

Indiana snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series - including Boston's first-round playoff sweep last season.

Domantas Sabonis flirted with a triple-double before finishing with 15 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Brogdon closed it out by making all six free throws in the final 17 seconds.

                    ROCKETS 116, CAVALIERS 110

CLEVELAND (AP) - James Harden scored 55 points - 20 in the fourth quarter - and Russell Westbrook added 23 points as Houston withstood an unexpected scare from Cleveland.

The free-falling Cavaliers have lost eight straight and 14 of 15.

Harden matched Kyrie Irving's arena record for points in a game, and his fourth with 50 or more this season bailed out the Rockets, who allowed the Cavs to score 24 straight points in the second half.

Cleveland was still up 108-107 when Harden, who came in leading the NBA in scoring at 38 points per game, dropped a floater in the lane. After a turnover by Cavs guard Jordan Clarkson, P.J. Tucker hit a 3-pointer from the corner and Clint Capela (13 rebounds) had a dunk following another Cleveland miscue.

The Cavs made three turnovers in the final minute.

                    HORNETS 113, NETS 108

NEW YORK (AP) - Devonte' Graham scored a career-high 40 points, and Charlotte rallied from a 20-point deficit to beat Brooklyn.

Graham had 27 points in the second half in Charlotte's second straight victory. Miles Bridges added 14 points.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 24 points and Jarrett Allen added 21 points and 10 rebounds for Brooklyn, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

                    JAZZ 127, TIMBERWOLVES 116

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Donovan Mitchell had 30 points and six assists, Joe Ingles pitched in a season-high 23 points and Utah dealt Minnesota its sixth straight loss.

Rudy Gobert added 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Jazz, who won for just the third time in nine games by taking over with a 38-24 advantage in the third quarter.

Jeff Teague scored 32 points, making all four of his 3-pointers and all six of his free throws, but the Timberwolves dropped their sixth consecutive home game and fell to 3-8 at Target Center this season.

Andrew Wiggins had 26 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota.

                    BULLS 136, HAWKS 102

CHICAGO (AP) - Zach LaVine scored 35 points in three quarters, Lauri Markkanen added 22 and Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over road-weary Atlanta.

LaVine, who sat out the final 14 minutes, was 12 for 15 from the field, including 7 for 7 from 3-point range.

Wendell Carter Jr. had 11 points and 10 rebounds and rookie Coby White had 19 points.

Trae Young had 15 points and 13 assists, Alex Len scored 17 points and rookie Cam Reddish added 16 for Atlanta, which has dropped two straight and 13 of 15.

                    GRIZZLIES 115, SUNS 108

PHOENIX (AP) - Dillon Brooks scored 27 points, Jaren Jackson Jr. added 24 and Memphis earned a win over Phoenix.

Memphis won two games in a row for the first time in nearly a month. Jackson shot 10 of 18 from the field, including 3 of 7 from 3-point range, and the Grizzlies improved to 6-0 when Brooks scores at least 20 points.

Frank Kaminsky III led the Suns with a season-high 24 points and Ricky Rubio tied a season-high with 22. Kelly Oubre Jr. added 14 points and 13 rebounds. Leading scorer Devin Booker had an off night with just 15 points on 6-of-17 shooting.

                    BUCKS 127, PELICANS 112

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo sat out but Milwaukee kept on rolling, getting 29 points from Eric Bledsoe in a over the New Orleans that extended the Bucks' winning streak to 16 games.

The Bucks (22-3) tied the second-longest winning streak in franchise history and moved closer to the franchise record of 20, set during the team's 1970-71 championship season.

Antetokounmpo sat out with a right quad tendon injury, missing his first game this season.

Khris Middleton added 24 points for Milwaukee and Ersan Ilyasova had 18 points and nine rebounds. George Hill contributed 13 points off the bench.

New Orleans (6-19) lost its 10th straight game despite a season-high 31 points from J.J. Redick and 25 points and 10 rebounds from Brandon Ingram. Jrue Holiday had 21 points.

                    KINGS 94, THUNDER 93

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Bogdan Bogdanovic made a 3-pointer with 13.4 seconds remaining, and Sacramento overcame an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Oklahoma City.

Both teams committed turnovers with the game tied in the final minute before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hit two free throws to put the Thunder up 93-91 with 31.6 seconds left.

Bogdanovic got the ball outside the arc and paused as Oklahoma City defender Dennis Schroder went flying past him trying for a block. Bogdanovic then hit a 28-foot jumper to give Sacramento the lead.

Chris Paul missed a shot from the elbow for the Thunder as time expired.

Buddy Hield had eight of his 23 points in the fourth quarter for the Kings. Bogdanovic scored 17 and Marvin Bagley III added 11 points and six rebounds after missing the previous 22 games with a broken right thumb.

Schroder had 17 points to lead six Thunder players in double figures. Paul wasn't one of them. Oklahoma City's point guard had eight points, 12 assists and seven rebounds.

The Thunder had won three straight.

                        Too-early 2020 baseball over/under in totals:

                        — Astros 99.5

                        — Dodgers 98.5

                        — Twins 90.5

                        — Padres 84.5

                        — Giants 68.5

                        — Mariners/Royals 66.5

                        Quote of the Day:
“I like Kiffin a lot. He’s a fun interview and honestly one of the smartest offensive minds out there. He’ll make Ole Miss entertaining again — and that’s saying something considering its last game was lost due to a dog pissing celebration.”

                        ***************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                        13) Los Angeles Angels signed 3B Anthony Rendon to a 7-year, $245M contact Wednesday night; Angels have a potent lineup, but they still lack pitching.

                        12) Want to know why fantasy baseball is increasingly popular? I’ll repeat something that I posted yesterday; it tells a story of why it is difficult to be a fan of a small market team:

                        2020 Bronx Bombers:
                        — Gerrit Cole, $36M
                        — Giancarlo Stanton, $26M
                        — Masahiro Tanaka, $23M
                        — Aroldis Chapman $17.2M

That adds up to $101.5M…….for four guys.

Oakland A’s made the playoffs the last two years; their ENTIRE payroll last year?

                        $92,178,333

                        11) If you and I play checkers, and you start wth 12 checkers but I start with 24, then I’m going to win most of the time, even if you’re smarter than me.

Gerrit Cole is going to make $1,090,909 per start next year; Oakland’s five starting pitchers LY made a total of roughly $12,500,000 for the whole season.

                        10) So having your own fantasy team where there are no salaries and you compete against people you know eliminates a lot of that BS and makes the summer more fun. At least if you have a cruddy season, you can blame yourself, instead of a ridiculous system that rewards the teams with the most money to spend.

                        9) 84 basketball players left college early LY and declared for the NBA Draft; only 44 of them were taken in the draft.

                        8) College football stuff:
                        — Colorado State hired former BC coach Steve Addazio as its new football coach.
                        — UNLV hired Oregon OC Marcus Arroyo as its new football coach.
                        — Florida Atlantic hired former Florida State coach Willie Taggart.

                        7) Baseball stuff:
                        — Mets signed P Michael Wacha to a 1-year deal, $3M deal (with incentives).
                        — Dodgers signed P Blake Treinen for one year, $10M.
                        — Blue Jays gave P Tanner Roark $24M for two years.

                        6) Adam Jones signed an $8M deal to play baseball for the Orix Buffaloes in Japan; Jones has played 14 years in the majors, mostly with the Orioles.

                        5) I’d track the movement of college football coaches on here, but those guys are nomadic- they constantly change jobs, especially assistants. Coaches’ wives must be experts at packing.

                        4) There have been 12 NBA games this season where a player had 20+ points and 20+ rebounds; Detroit’s Andre Drummond has five of those 12 games.

                        3) Diamondbacks/Padres will play two regular season games in Mexico City April 18-19; the first regular season MLB games in Mexico City. Games had previously been played in Monterrey.

                        2) Bad beat of the week: NBA’s Atlanta Hawks (+8.5) led Miami by 6 points with 0:59 left in regulation Tuesday night, but they didn’t cover. Seriously.

Miami scored the next 22 points and won by 14 in OT. It was the NBA’s widest margin of victory in an OT game since October 31, 2009, when Philadelphia beat the Knicks, 141-127.

                        1) Good trivia; Denver rookie QB Drew Lock plays against the Chiefs this week; Lock’s dad Andy was the starting right guard for the Missouri Tigers in 1989, when KC coach Andy Reid was his offensive line coach. 30 years later, they cross paths again.

                          Top Game - Blazers at Nuggets (-6/213), 10:40 p.m.

On Tuesday night, all was right with the Trail Blazers again.

Damian Lillard hit eight 3-pointers, Hassan Whiteside broke off a double-double with five blocks and Portland was so impressive that extended garbage time ensued in a 115-87 rout. Unfortunately, the Knicks can only come through town once and they still woke up this morning as both a last-place team and the NBA’s biggest disappointment.

Portland (10-15 SU, 11-14 ATS) still has time on its side, but must start getting its act together in piling up wins to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time since 2013, head coach Terry Stotts’ inaugural season at the helm. The Blazers have incredibly put together winning streaks only twice this season and have dropped eight of their last 10 road games. They’ve only defeated a single team with a winning record outside of Portland and are down three pieces who would ordinarily be in the rotation. Center Jusuf Nurkic is still a few months from returning from compound fractures of both his fibula and tibia in his left leg, forward Zack Collins is out until March after suffering a torn labrum and wing Rodney Hood ruptured his Achilles last Friday, adding to the doomed feeling around the group.

Talk of finding a way to add Portland native Kevin Love has begun making the rounds as a franchise that entered the season with aspirations of taking advantage of Golden State’s demise looks to reverse course from the sea of nowhere if appears headed towards. Carmelo Anthony has already had his contract guaranteed after providing a boost, so the Blazers have already proven willing to do just about anything to get on track.

They don’t play again until visiting Phoenix on Monday and then return home to start a four-game homestand played exclusively against teams with losing records, so this is the beginning of a crucial stretch as they attempt climb back towards .500. As things stand entering Thursday’s action, they’re just one game behind the playoff pace behind a pack featuring the Jazz, Thunder and Kings.

Less than five full games separate the entire Northwest Division, which continues to be led by the Nuggets in spite of their season-worst three-game losing streak. Denver (14-8, 10-11-1) has actually dropped five of six, beating only the Knicks on an East coast trip they returned from following a disappointing 97-92 Tuesday night loss in Philadelphia. Despite a strong start, losing Jamal Murray to a trunk contusion after colliding with fellow point guard Ben Simmons in the opening quarter. X-rays came back as hoped for, but it remains to be seen whether he plays here.

Paul Millsap is also questionable with a foot issue, which could lead to more minutes for rookie forward Michael Porter, Jr., who got early time against the 76ers as Michael Malone seeks to spark a slumping offense. Jokic is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds, numbers more on par with what he did in his second season than what we’ve grown accustomed to seeing over the previous two as he’s grown into an MVP candidate. Jokic has averaged 15.6 points while shooting 46.6 percent over the last 10 games and is in a 4-for-26 slump from 3-point range (15.3 percent). Getting him going is crucial if the Nuggets are to live up to preseason expectations. They lead the league in fewest points allowed per game this season but have only topped 102 points themselves once in their last six games. Not surprisingly, the ‘under’ is 5-1 over that stretch.

The Nuggets are perfect against Northwest Division opposition, while Portland is 2-2 in such games. Rebounding is likely to play a major role since Denver is 8-2 when winning the glass and the Blazers are 4-13 when outrebounded, so it’s crucial that Whiteside stay out of foul trouble against All-Star Nikola Jokic for the Blazers to hang around and pull off an upset. Skal Labissiere, who has been getting the bulk of the minutes as the primary reserve center, is banged up and would require Stotts to go small with Mario Hezonja and rookie Nassir Little among his limited frontcourt options.

Denver won at Portland 108-100 in the season opener on Oct. 23, capitalizing on knocking down 18 3-pointers, the most in series history. It gave the Nuggets a small measure of revenge after losing last May’s Western Conference semifinal series upon fumbling Games 6 and 7. Jokic scored 16 points in the fourth quarter. He hasn’t scored 16 points in a whole game in seven of the last 11, though he’s starting to show signs of coming out of his slump and did deliver 11 assists against Philly, his second-largest total of the season.

This will be Anthony’s first trip in to Denver with the Blazers and will mark only the third time he faces the team that drafted him while suited up for a conference rival. Anthony was 0-2 at Pepsi Center with OKC in ’17-’18. After a hot start, Anthony is shooting just 33 percent in December, averaging 13.8 points. Including the postseason, the Blazers have won just two of their last nine in Denver, which includes an 0-7 regular-season run. The Blazers' last win in the Mile High city outside of their most recent playoff series came in OT back in the '16-'17 season opener.

                          Best of the Rest

                          76ers (-1/210) at Celtics, 8:10 p.m. ET:
Boston lost a rollercoaster ride of a game in Indiana on Wednesday, falling victim to the absence of Marcus Smart (eye infection) in addition to Gordon Hayward exiting early after being struck in the face. The Celtics hope both can return and help the team improve to 11-0 at TD Garden, but Hayward reported feeling dizzy after being struck on the nose by Doug McDermott, so he'll have to pass concussion protocol. The 76ers won the season opener 107-93 by holding Kemba Walker to 4-for-18 shooting but he comes off a 44-point outburst in Indy and is looking increasingly comfortable with his role in Boston. Philadelphia is just 5-7 SU on the road and 2-5 ATS in a favorite's role away from home, which is what it would currently close as unless late money comes in on the Celtics, which is possible if the injury situation improves in their favor.

                          Cavs at Spurs (-11.5/219.5), 8:40 p.m. ET:
Cleveland stunningly had the Rockets on the ropes in the fourth quarter of a 116-110 Wednesday night loss and fumbled away the game down the stretch, so an unhappy young team will take the floor at AT&T Center for the second of a back-to-back. The Cavs are 1-2 when playing on the second night in succession, absorbing blowout losses vs. the Knicks (123-105) and 76ers (141-94) on the road while beating the Blazers at home. Cleveland has dropped eight straight and 14 of 15. San Antonio is looking to match its season-long by winning a third straight game and will be playing for just the third time since Dec. 1 allowing them to get healthy and put in some much-needed practice work. The Spurs have won six straight in the series but are just 1-1 SU as a double-digit favorite this season, failing to cover either time.

                          Mavs (-5.5/220.5) vs. Pistons, 9:10 p.m. ET:
This matchup is being played inside Mexico City Arena, which opened in 2012 and has hosted a number of games, most recently last December 13 in a 97-91 Orlando win over the Bulls. Altitude is a varaible, but both teams have had a number of days off entering this one. The Mavs come in off their first loss since Nov. 26, falling late against Sacramento in a home upset. Detroit has won four of five and is looking for its first three-game winning streak of the season after Derrick Rose's heroics helped win in New Orleans on Monday night. The Spurs and Suns will come into town and play on Saturday.

BOSTON (AP) Joel Embiid responded to criticism from Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley to score a season-high 38 points and add 13 rebounds in the Philadelphia 76ers 115-109 victory over the Boston Celtics on Thursday night.

Embiid scored 16 points in the fourth quarter, hitting five of six free throws in the final 26 seconds to hold off Boston's last charge. With Philadelphia leading by four in the final 15 seconds, he blocked Daniel Theis' shot to help clinch it.

Earlier in the week, Barkley said Embiid is the toughest matchup in the league, but he doesn't take advantage of it. O'Neal said on the TNT broadcast that Embiid shouldn't settle for 22 points a game, his current average, but should aim for more like 28 or 30.

Tobias Harris had 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Sixers. They who won their fourth straight eighth in nine tries.

Andre Drummond led the Pistons with 23 points and 15 rebounds.
