CAVS CAN'T SCORE

The Magic rank third in the Association in scoring defense allowing 103.4 points per game. Today, they travel to Cleveland to take on a Cavaliers team that has been playing better at home, but still ranks 28th in scoring with 104.2 ppg.

In the three most recent games in the head-to-head the Magic have won all three contests by an average score of 110-93 and have held the Cavaliers to 41 percent shooting. Expect another solid showing out of Orlando defensively and take them to cover as 4-point favorites.


BOARD MAN GETS PAID

Brooklyn's Jarrett Allen has been extremely active on the glass this season averaging 10.6 rebounds per game, with that number even higher over his most recent ten games. Today he's in a very favorable matchup as the Nets take on a Hornets team giving up an average of 24 points and a league high 18.2 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Expect another big night out of Allen and bet Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 25.5.


SLOW AND STEADY

The Celtics put their perfect 8-0 home record on the line as they host the Nuggets who have gone 6-2 on the road. Both teams have gotten out to slow starts this season ranking 24th and 27th in first-half points per game.

On the defensive end, these team rank first and second in opponent first-half scoring, allowing just over 51 points in the first 24 minutes. Expect defense to be emphasized and both squads to continue shooting poorly early. Bet Under the first half game total of 105.5.


TWO TOP OFFENSES

The Bucks are 3.5-point home favorites as they host the Clippers. The Bucks have won nine of their first 10 home games this season and come in today on a 13 game winning streak. Offensively, Milwaukee averages 123.7 ppg at home.

With both squads shooting the ball really well and ranking in the Top-6 in scoring, expect a high scoring game. Looking back at the three most recent games in the head-to-head, the average score has been 127-123 in favor of the Bucks. Look for a similar score today, and bet Over the game total of 232.

The Lakers put their 10 game road winning streak on the line as they travel to Portland to take on the Blazers who have won four of their last five games.

Nets beat Hornets for 5th win last 6 road games

MILWAUKEE (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to their 14th straight victory, a 119-91 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

Antetokounmpo, on his 25th birthday, made 11 of 20 shots and had his 21st double-double of the season.

Antetokounmpo left the game with Milwaukee ahead by 36 with 8:56 to play. The Bucks led by as many as 41 and extended their longest winning streak since winning 16 consecutive games over two seasons in 1973.

Khris Middleton added 17 points and Pat Connaughton and Ersan Ilyasova each scored 13 for Milwaukee.

Kawhi Leonard had 17 points and Paul George added 13 for the Clippers.

LAKERS 136, TRAIL BLAZERS 113

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Anthony Davis scored 39 points, LeBron James added 31 and Los Angeles routed Portland.

It was the 11th straight road win for the Lakers, who have lost just three games overall this season and sit atop the Western Conference standings.

The game was costly for Portland. Starting forward Rodney Hood was injured in the first quarter and the team later announced that he had torn his left Achilles tendon.

Portland coach Terry Stotts was ejected late in the third quarter after angrily protesting a foul call that earned him a double technical. It was the first time that Stotts has been tossed from a game as an NBA coach.

Damian Lillard, who helped pull Stotts back from the confrontation with referee Leon Wood, finished with 29 points. Portland trailed by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter.

THUNDER 139, TIMBERWOLVES 127, OT

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Chris Paul scored a season-high 30 points and Oklahoma City pulled off an improbable overtime victory over Minnesota.

With Minnesota ahead 121-119 and a second remaining in regulation, Oklahoma City fouled Karl-Anthony Towns. He missed a free throw, then Minnesota was issued a technical foul for a delay of game because Jordan Bell did not have his jersey tucked in when he subbed in.

Danilo Gallinari made the technical free throw for Oklahoma City, then Towns shot his second free throw at the other end. He made it, putting Minnesota up two but giving Oklahoma City a chance at a throw-in. Steven Adams completed a nearly length-of-the-court pass to Dennis Schroder, who made a layup as time expired to force overtime.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 29 points, Schroder added 25, Adams had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Gallinari scored 21 points. Jeff Teague scored a season-high 32 points, and Towns added 30 for the Timberwolves.

CELTICS 108, NUGGETS 95

BOSTON (AP) - Jayson Tatum scored 26 points, Jaylen Brown added 21 and Boston beat Denver to remain perfect at home for the season.

Kemba Walker added 19 points. The Celtics won for the fifth time in six games and improved to 9-0 at home. No Boston-area pro team has lost a home game since the Baltimore Orioles beat the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Sept. 28.

Nikola Jokic had 30 points and 10 rebounds for Denver. The Nuggets have lost three of their last four.

NETS 111, HORNETS 104

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Joe Harris scored 22 points, DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Brooklyn continued its recent strong road play, beating Charlotte.

The Nets (12-10) won for the fifth time in their last six road games, all while playing without injured point guard Kyrie Irving. Taurean Prince also scored 16 points, and Jarrett Allen had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Spencer Dinwiddie finished with 12 assists.

Devonte' Graham had 29 points for the Hornets.

PISTONS 108, PACERS 101

DETROIT (AP) - Blake Griffin broke a tie with a 3-pointer with 41 seconds left and scored 25 points, Andre Drummond had 25 points and 22 rebounds and Detroit beat Indiana.

Derrick Rose had 14 points and set up Griffin's go-ahead shot. The Pistons have won three of four.

T.J. Warren scored 26 points and Domantas Sabonis added 18 points and 13 rebounds for Indiana. The Pacers lost for the second time in nine games.

WARRIORS 100, BULLS 98

CHICAGO (AP) - Glenn Robinson III scored the go-ahead basket and finished with 20 points to help Golden State beat Chicago.

The Warriors beat the Bulls for the second time this season, their only victories in the last nine games. Golden State escaped when Zach LaVine missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds, and Draymond Green secured the rebound. LaVine had 21 points, and Lauri Markkanen added 20 points for Chicago.

HEAT 112, WIZARDS 103

MIAMI (AP) - Jimmy Butler scored 28 points and had his second triple-double of the week, Bam Adebayo had a career-high 24 points and Miami beat Washington.

Butler finished with 11 assists and 11 rebounds for Miami, which is 9-0 at home for the first time in franchise history. Tyler Herro scored 22 points and Adebayo grabbed 14 rebounds.

Bradley Beal scored 23 points for Washington.

SPURS 105, KINGS 104, OT

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 13 rebounds in his return from an injury and San Antonio rallied from nine points down in the final 1:50 of regulation before beating Sacramento in overtime,

The Kings missed four shots on their final possession of overtime, including a pair of 3-point attempts by Trevor Ariza. Buddy Hield had 23 points and Harrison Barnes added 19 for Sacramento.

MAGIC 93, CAVALIERS 87

CLEVELAND (AP) - Terrence Ross scored 21 points, Evan Fournier added 18 and Aaron Gordon had a big dunk in the final 20 seconds to lead Orlando past Cleveland.

Orlando has won four straight to reach .500 - at 11-11 - for the first time this season. Collin Sexton scored 19 points for Cleveland. The Cavaliers have lost four in a row and 11 of 12.

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

13) Oregon 37, Utah 15— This score makes the Oklahoma-Baylor game a play-in game for the 4-team national playoff, unless Georgia upsets LSU tomorrow night. Ducks led this game 23-0, Utes got back within 23-15 but that was it.

How do you handicap a disappointed Utah team when they play in their bowl game?

12) There have been 18 conference games in college basketball so far this season; home favorites are 5-5 ATS, home underdogs are 3-5. Home teams are 8-10 ATS, underdogs 8-10.

11) Baseball’s collective bargaining agreement ends after the 2021 season; lot of people think that when 2022 starts, both leagues will have the DH, so look for NL teams to add a sluggish defensive player who can hit in the next year or so, with 2022 in mind.

Some teams will probably use the DH to give guys a day off from playing in the field, while keeping their bat in the lineup. Will be curious to see how each team handles the change.

10) San Diego Padres added OF Tommy Pham in a deal with Tampa Bay; Rays get OF Hunter Renfroe, SS prospect Xavier Edwards and a prospect to be named later. Pham hit .273 with an .819 OPS LY, with 33 doubles, 21 homers, 68 RBI, 77 runs and 25 steals LY for the Rays

9) Four college football coaches used the job opening at Florida State to get contract extensions at their current job: Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, Penn State’s James Franklin, Washington State’s Mike Leach and Indiana coach Tom Allen.

Ole Miss is set to hire Lane Kiffin as their new football coach; Kiffin could write a hell of a book, with some of the jobs he’s had— Tennessee, USC, the Raider- he was an assistant coach at Alabama, too.

8) New York Knicks fired head coach David Fizdale Friday after the team’s 4-18 start. It isn’t Fizdale’s fault; the Knicks have a terrible owner, a mediocre front office- their roster isn’t a winning one. The bigger question is this: Why did they hire Fizdale in the first place?

7) Get well soon to Jeff Tedford, who resigned as football coach at Fresno State due to health concerns; Tedford had heart problems five years ago, when he had to step down as OC with the Tampa Bay Bucs in the NFL. No word whether his health issues now are heart related.

6) A few days after Georgetown’s off-court problems resulted in two of their starters entering the transfer portal, the Hoyas also lost a top 100 recruit for next year. Not good.

Terrance Williams is a 6-6 F from Gonzaga College HS in Washington DC who originally chose the Hoyas over Michigan and Notre Dame.

5) Florida Gators will name its basketball court after former coach Billy Donovan on February 15, during the NBA All-Star break; Donovan led the Gators to two national championships and four Final Four appearances during his 19 seasons in Gainesville.

4) Duke 77, Virginia Tech 63– Blue Devils outscored Tech 39-22 after trailing by 3 at the half; they win their ACC opener.

3) Michigan 103, Iowa 91— Wolverines scored 1.39 points/possession- there won’t be many figures higher than that anywhere all season long. Not often a team scores 103 points but no one on that team scores 20+. Iowa’s Garza scored 44 of their 91 points.

2) Patriots will re-sign Nick Folk to kick for them Sunday; he had an appendectomy couple weeks ago, so they cut him and brought in another guy last week, but that guy missed a PAT in Houston so they told him to take a hike. New England has used four kickers this year.

1) Interesting article in The Athletic about RJ Hampton, a young man who skipped college to play pro ball for the New Zealand Breakers of Australia’s National Basketball League- he hopes to be in the NBA at this time next year.

Hampton will make around $500,000 this season; he also signed a five-year shoe deal with Li-Ning. He averaged 10.5 ppg in his first six games of a 28-game season- in the short time he’s been in New Zealand, the Breakers’ general manager quit, and an assistant coach walked out at an airport- the team also lost four of its first six games.

Hampton had the grades to go to college and play there, but chose this route instead. Lot of other people are watching to see how he does.

Pacers deal Knicks 9th straight loss, 104-103

NEW YORK (AP) Julius Randle missed a free throw with 0.1 seconds left, sending New York to a 104-103 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Saturday night in the Knicks' first game since firing coach David Fizdale.

The Knicks were much more competitive under interim coach Mike Miller than they had been in recent games under Fizdale, who was fired Friday. They chased after rebounds and loose balls throughout the fourth quarter, erasing an 11-point deficit and giving themselves a shot at overtime when Randle was fouled while trying to put back the rebound of a scramble.

He calmly made the first free throw but the second was long, sending New York to a ninth straight loss and a 4-19 record.

T.J. Warren scored 25 points and Domantas Sabonis had 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Pacers. They bounced back from a loss at Detroit on Friday.

The Knicks lost by 44 and 37 in their last two games under Fizdale and he was fired Friday after running practice. The Knicks offered no details about the decision in their press release announcing the firing, and team executives didn't speak Saturday.

DALLAS (AP) - Luka Doncic scored 28 points in 26 minutes, leading Dallas in a rout of New Orleans.

Dallas (18-8) has won five in a row and 10 of 11 for the first time since winning is its only NBA championship in 2010-11.

New Orleans is on an eight-game losing streak.

Tim Hardaway Jr. and Kristaps Porzingis scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Boban Marjanovic had season highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds off the bench. Jalen Brunson scored 14.

J.J. Redick led New Orleans with 15 points. Brandon Ingram and Jrue Holiday scored 14 each and Jaxson Hayes had 11.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Simmons hit his second career 3-pointer and scored a career-high 34 points, and Philadelphia didn't need Joel Embiid's help to rout Cleveland.

Simmons made 12 of 14 field goals, including his only 3-point attempt, and hit 9 of 12 free throws to help Philadelphia improve to 11-0 at home.

Embiid sat out with a left hip contusion.

Darius Garland had 17 points for the Cavaliers, who have lost six in a row and 12 of 13.

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden scored 18 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter and Ben McLemore added 27 points to help Houston outlast Phoenix.

Harden had a tough shooting night through three quarters and was 5 of 19 overall and 1 of 10 on 3s with 16 points before getting going in the fourth. The game was tied with about 7 minutes left, and he scored all of Houston's points in a 13-6 run that made it 102-95.

Russell Westbrook had 24 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists for his third straight triple-double and sixth this season. Harden finished 8 of 27, 3 of 17 on 3s and made 15 of 18 free throws.

Devin Booker led the Suns with 35 points after scoring a season-high 44 in an overtime victory at New Orleans on Thursday night.

Random thoughts on a December day when I’m hunkered down inside because it is damn cold outside, and I’m already tired of winter:

Noon-4pm:
Oklahoma 30, Baylor 23 OT— NFL teams are very high on Baylor coach Matt Rhule as someone who will be an NFL head coach someday. His QB got knocked out of this game in the 2nd quarter, but they still took Oklahoma to OT, behind freshman 3rd-stringer Jacob Zeno, who completed only two passes, but for 159 yards.

11am local time kickoff means a 7am pre-game meal. Not an ideal situation, though, such an early kickoff. TV decides which games are played when.

This was Baylor’s first appearance in the Big X title game; they were outgained 146-16 in the first quarter, 433-265 for the game.

Baylor 63, Arizona 58— Feel bad for the Baylor basketball players, with this game at same time as the football game, which was played 98 miles away in Arlington. They actually let fans into the basketball game in Waco for free, and not that many showed up.

— Cheerleading trivia: Half of Baylor’s cheerleaders went to the football game, half stayed behind in Waco and went to the basketball game. The cheerleaders who stayed behind get to go to Baylor’s bowl game, which seems like it would be more fun than a 98-mile bus ride to Dallas.

Appalachian State 45, Louisiana 38— This game was 42-17 with 2:00 left in third quarter; Ragin’ Cajuns closed to within final margin with 1:19 left to play. ULL gained 513 yards, but their minus-2 turnover ratio did them in. App State’s last TD was a pick-6.

Miami OH 26, Central Michigan 21— RedHawks won their 16th MAC title, after gaining only 61 yards in the first half. CMU did great just getting to this game, after going 1-11 LY.

Ohio State 106, Penn State 74— If the NCAA tournament started tomorrow (it doesn’t), I’d pick a Louisville-Ohio State national title game.

LSU 37, Georgia 10— Joe Burrow is going to win the Heisman Trophy; at one time, he was the 3rd-string QB at Ohio State. Three of the four QB’s in the national playoff are going to be guys who transferred from their original school.

Memphis 29, Cincinnati 24—- Not often teams play each other two weeks in a row; Tigers beat Cincinnati twice in eight days- thats the good news.

Bad news for Memphis— their coach is expected to bolt to Florida $tate today.

Boise State 31, Hawai’i 10— If you went to college at Hawai’i, how excited would you be about visiting Boise in December? Broncos win their third Muntain West title game.

Wisconsin 84, Indiana 64— Hoosiers were last D-I team in America to play outside their home arena, and it showed here- they got waxed. This was Indiana’s 17th loss in a row in Madison.

Creighton 95, Nebraska 76— Bluejays led this game 37-7; Nebraska has ton of work to do on the recruiting trail.

Memphis 65, UAB 57— Blazers were up 20 in first half, but Memphis is so talented; they won this going away. When Tigers get Wiseman back in January, they have shot at developing into a Final Four contender. Big afternoon for the Memphis athletic department.

Xavier 73, Cincinnati 66— One of best rivalries in the country, been dominated by the home team recently. Naji Marshall scored 31 for the Musketeers.
