          • Maryland at Illinois
            David Schwab

This Friday night’s limited betting board for college basketball does offer one showdown of note between nationally ranked teams in the Big Ten.

The No. 9 Maryland Terrapins head to Champaign to tangle with the No. 20 Illinois Fighting Illini.

No. 9 Maryland Terrapins at No. 20 Illinois Fighting Illini
            (FOX Sports 1, 8 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Illinois -3, Total 133.5

            Betting Matchup

Maryland joins Illinois at the top of the current Big Ten standings with identical straight-up 8-3 records. The Terrapins are coming off Tuesday’s tight 56-51 victory at home against Rutgers. This was the Terrapins’ fifth SU win in a row, but as 7 ½-point favorites, it was the first time they failed to cover the closing line in their past six contests. They are 18-4 SU overall with a 12-10 record against the spread. The total stayed UNDER 130 points in that last game and it has stayed UNDER in six of Maryland’s last nine outings.

The Terrapins opened this season’s conference schedule with an early 59-58 home victory against Illinois closing as heavy 10-point favorites back on Dec. 7. Anthony Cowan Jr. led all scorers in that game with 20 points. Against Rutgers in Tuesday’s win, he ended the night with 17 points. The senior guard is Maryland’s leading scorer this season with 16.3 points per game. Jalen Smith added 14 points to the winning effort on Tuesday as the Terrapins second leading scorer (15.2 points) this year.

Illinois just got strapped with its third conference loss in Sunday’s 72-65 setback against Iowa as a 4 ½-point road underdog. The Fighting Illini (16-6 SU) slipped to 7-4 ATS in those 11 Big Ten games as part of an 11-9-1 record ATS overall. The total has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games after staying UNDER 146 ½ points against Iowa. Illinois only other conference loss was against Michigan State on January 2. It loss that game by 20 points as a 10-point road underdog.

The Fighting Illini are averaging 74.2 PPG led by sophomore guard Ayo Dosunmu’s 15.8-point scoring average. He has failed to reach that average in three of his last five starts with 11 points in Sunday’s loss. Yet, he did put up 27 points in a recent win against Michigan. Illinois has four different players scoring at least 10 PPG. It is shooting 45.6 percent from the field but that percentage drops to 31.2 from three-point range. The Fighting Illini are allowing 64.2 PPG on defense.

            Betting Trends

-- The Terrapins are 2-5 SU and 3-4 ATS in their last seven road games but they have won their last two games on the road SU and their last three ATS. The total has gone OVER in four of the seven games.

-- The Fighting Illini are 12-1 SU in their last 13 home games and they have gone 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games played at home. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven home games.

-- With the earlier win this season, Maryland has carved out a slight 6-4 SU edge against Illinois over the past 10 meetings. The series is tied 5-5 ATS during that same span. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of the last seven meetings.

“I’ve never heard in 25 years anybody say a bad word about Leon Rose. Not one. He’s a gatherer, he’s a culture-builder. I understand why [the Knicks] would do it if they do that [hire Rose]. Because I’m so close, I’d help him in any way I could being a resource. It just wouldn’t be to coach.”

Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                  13) Robert Covington was traded from Minnesota to Houston this week; he took a 6am flight to Houston Wednesday, caught a red-eye flight to LA, had a crash course film session with the Rockets’ coaching staff, and later scored 14 points in 30:00 off the bench at Staples Thursday.

Houston won the game 121-111; they were +16 with Covington on the court, -6 with him on the bench.

Covington is making $11,301,219 this year, which breaks down to $137,819.74 per game.

                  12) Suns 127, Rockets 91— Houston beats the Lakers in Staples Thursday, then loses by 36 in Phoenix the next night. Kelly Oubre scored a career-high 39 points for the Suns.

                  11) Maryland 75, Illinois 66— Illini scored 42 points in first half, only 24 in second; Maryland swept them, which is impressive.

                  10) South Alabama 70, Troy 66— When ESPN started up 40 years ago, Sun Belt was one of the first leagues to let them televise their basketball games- there were a lot of Sun Belt games on TV back then. As ESPN’s profile grew, they dropped the Sun Belt, which is too bad- the league is pretty good right now and deserves more TV exposure.

                  9) Northern Illinois 57, Kent State 54— Huskies haven’t been to NCAA Tournament since 1996; they’re 15-9 this year, 8-3 in MAC, leading the West Division. Can the Huskies make it this year?

                  8) VCU 73, Davidson 62— 148th consecutive home sellout for VCU, in the 7,637-seat Siegel Center; its good to be a big fish in a smaller pond.

                  7) Former UNLV basketball coach Marvin Menzies sold his old home in a Las Vegas suburb for $1.15M on Friday; Menzies is now an assistant coach at Grand Canyon.

                  6) Why doesn’t ESPN or the MLB Network televise the Caribbean Series? They want to grow the game, but they blow a chance here to promote the game- this is good baseball being played.

                  5) Kendrys Morales retired after a major league career where he hit 219 homers and earned around $75M; I’ll always remember Morales for hitting a walk-off homer, leaping on home plate in celebration, but breaking his ankle when his spikes slipped off of home plate; he missed the whole 2011 season because of that injury.

                  4) North Carolina A&T is leaving the MEAC for the Big South Conference, apparently to reduce travel time for road games.

                  3) Clemson’s offensive coordinator makes $1.7M a year; if he’s smart, he’ll grab a head coaching job after QB Trevor Lawrence moves on to the NFL a year from now.

                  2) Houston Astros players can’t be penalized by MLB in the sign-stealing debacle; they were given immunity so they would tell MLB what they knew about what went on.

                  1) Turns out the Peloton exercise bike costs $58 a month, for someone in a studio somewhere to yell at you while you ride an exercise bike at the crack of dawn. Ummm….no thanks.

Duke is 9-2 straight-up in ACC play and a game and a half behind Louisville for the top spot in the standings. Its current SU winning streak reached four games with a 2-2 record against the spread after failing to cover in Tuesday’s 63-55 road victory against Boston College as a heavy 14-point favorite.
