The last Thursday of college betting action in January serves up a trio of featured options in the Big Ten and Pac-12.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers get things started in a road game against the No. 19 Illinois Fighting Irish. Later Thursday night, the No. 18 Iowa Hawkeyes head to College Park for a showdown against the No. 15 Maryland Terrapins. Moving across the country to the West Coast, the Arizona Wildcats will be on the road against the Washington Huskies.

Betting Matchup

Minnesota fell back to .500 in the Big Ten (straight-up and against the spread) at 5-5 with Sunday’s 70-52 loss at home to Michigan State. It closed as a three-point underdog and the total stayed UNDER 142 points. It has stayed UNDER in four of the last six games. The Golden Gophers are 11-9 SU overall with a 7-11-1 record ATS. Their top two players all season long have been center Daniel Otura (19.7 points and 11.3 rebounds) and guard Marcus Carr (16.1 points and 6.8 assists).

The Fighting Illini remain one of six Big Ten teams in the national rankings. They are tied with Michigan State for first place in the conference standings at 7-2 SU. Saturday’s tight 64-62 road victory over Michigan as 4 ½-point underdogs was their sixth SU win in a row. They are 4-2 ATS during the same span. Illinois (15-5 SU, 10-8-1 ATS) has averaged 67.7 points per game over the last six games as opposed to an overall scoring average of 75.4 points on the season.

Betting Trends

-- The Golden Gophers have a 6-1 record ATS in their last seven Thursday games and the total has stayed UNDER in 13 of their last 14 games on the road.

-- The Fighting Illini are a perfect 6-0 SU in their last six home games but they slip to 1-4 ATS in their last five games played on Thursday.

-- The series is tied 2-2 SU in the last four meetings with Minnesota holding the 3-1 edge ATS. Illinois has the slight 6-4 edge (SU and ATS) over the last 10 meetings with the total going OVER in six of the last eight matchups.


No. 18 Iowa Hawkeyes at No. 15 Maryland Terrapins

Betting Matchup

Following back-to-back road losses to Penn State and Nebraska to start the month of January, the Hawkeyes have won their last five games starting with a 67-49 home victory against Maryland on Jan. 10 as two-point underdogs. Their record ATS in these seven games is 3-2-2. Iowa has an overall record of 15-5 SU (12-6-2 ATS) with a 6-3 mark in the Big Ten. Center Luka Garza racked up 21 points with 18 rebounds in Monday’s 68-62 win at home against Wisconsin.

Maryland was able to make it three SU wins in a row with Sunday’s tight 77-76 victory on the road against Indiana. It closed as a 2 ½-point road underdog to cover in the last four contests. The total went OVER 133 points on Sunday but it has stayed UNDER the closing line in nine of the Terrapins’ last 13 games. They are 6-3 SU in the conference and 16-4 overall. Anthony Cowan Jr. (15.5 points) and Jalen Smith (15.2 points) are the team’s top two scorers. Smith scored the final seven points in Sunday’s win.

Betting Trends

-- The Hawkeyes are 3-2 ATS this season on the road and 4-2-1 ATS in seven games closing as underdogs.

-- The Terrapins have a 7-4 record ATS in 11 home games and they have won their last 12 games at home SU.

-- Maryland has won four of the last six meetings SU but Iowa has the 4-2 edge ATS. The total stayed UNDER 146 ½ points in the first meeting and it has stayed UNDER in three of the last four games between the two.


Arizona Wildcats at Washington Huskies

Betting Matchup

The Wildcats are 3-3 SU and 4-2 ATS in six Pac-12 games this season. They lost to Arizona State 66-65 on Saturday as five-point road favorites after covering as six-point favorites at home in their previous 75-54 romp over Colorado. Arizona is 13-6 SU with a 10-9 record ATS. It is averaging 80.7 PPG behind a trio of players scoring at least 12 points a game. The Wildcats are shooting a respectable 47.8 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from three-point range.

Washington (12-9 SU, 9-12 ATS) has lost its last three games SU and ATS to fall to 2-6 SU and ATS in conference play. The total went OVER 130 ½ points in Saturday’s 76-62 road loss to Colorado as an eight-point underdog. It had stayed UNDER in the Huskies’ previous seven contests. They have failed to score more than 66 points in each of the last six games. On the year, this team averages 70.0 PPG while holding its opponents to 63.4 points a game.

-- The Wildcats have gone 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS in four previous road games this season. The total has gone OVER in 12 of their last 18 games played in the month of January.

The final Friday of January is rather quiet when it comes to betting on college basketball. However, there are a pair of matchups in the MAC and Atlantic 10 that could attract some attention from the public.

The early start sends the Akron Zips on the road to face the Kent State Golden Flashes. A little later Friday night, the VCU Rams head to Kingston to tangle with the Rhode Island Rams.

Betting Matchup

At 6-2 straight-up in conference play, the Zips are one game ahead of Kent State in the MAC standings and one game out of the lead held by Bowling Green. They are coming off Tuesday’s surprising 77-74 loss to Buffalo as 7 ½-point home favorites. They have now failed to cover in three of their last four games. Akron is 7-2 SU over its past nine games as part of an overall record of 16-5. It is 11-8 against the spread with the total staying UNDER in four of the last six games.

The Zips are averaging 77.8 points per game and allowing 65.2 points on defense.

Kent State (15-6 SU, 10-8-1 ATS) snapped a recent three-game skid (SU and ATS) with back-to-back road wins as an underdog against Buffalo and Toledo. It is 2-4 ATS over its last six games. With 83 points in Tuesday’s 13-point win against Toledo, the Golden Flashes were able to erase a 21-point deficit.

The Rams closed as 8 ½-point favorites in that game. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five outings.

Junior forward Marcus Santos-Silva leads all scorers with 13.2 points per game and he has a team-high 9.2 rebounds a game.

The other Rams in this matchup have a SU 7-1 mark in A 10 play. After an opening loss to Richmond, they have won their last seven games while going 6-1 ATS. Hawkeyes worth backing at home, and the NCAA basketball best bets you need to make this weekend

Luka Garza has put up 23 points and 10.4 rebounds per game for Iowa this season, leading them to a 15-6 record.

There's more than just the Super Bowl going on this weekend with a bevy of great college basketball games on the betting board, highlighted by a rematch of last year's Elite Eight matchup between Auburn and Kentucky as well as a Big Ten battle on Sunday with Iowa hosting Illinois. We break down the odds for both those games and much more, as we bring you the best betting notes and predictions in NCAA basketball this weekend.

LOOKING FOR ANOTHER NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH

We're starting things off with some Ivy League ball on Friday night, as Yale hosts Columbia as 15.5-point favorites. Yale is 14-4 SU and two of those losses were by just two points on the road against North Carolina and Penn State.

The Bulldogs play excellent perimeter defense while forward Jordan Bruner protects the rim. They hold opponents to just 36.4 percent shooting from the floor, and limited Clemson to 45 points and PSU to 58 points earlier this season.

That's bad news for a Columbia team that ranks outside the Top-300 schools in the country in shooting percentage, converting at a clip of just 41 percent. Take Columbia's team total Under 58.


ELITE EIGHT REMATCH

We get a rematch of last year's Elite Eight matchup as the No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats take on the No. 16 Auburn Tigers on Saturday. Auburn started the season off 15-0 before getting destroyed in back to back contests on the road against Alabama and Florida.

The Tigers performances at home haven't been impressive either, barely holding on for victories against Vandy, Iowa State and Ole Miss. Their five conference wins have come against programs that are a combined 10-25 in SEC play this year.

While Auburn is averaging 79.3 points per game they shoot a modest 44.3 percent from the field, compared to the Wildcats who convert at a clip of 46.2 percent. And while UK doesn't shoot well from deep the Tigers haven't exactly excelled in that department either this season.

Kentucky's Ashton Hagans, Immanuel Quickley, Tyrese Maxey, and Nick Richards all average over 13 points per game which makes the Wildcats very hard to defend. John Calipari's squad seems to be getting better with every week. The Wildcat have won eight of their previous nine games and have quality wins against Texas Tech, Louisville and Michigan State this season. Take Kentucky to cover the spread.


ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE

Wichita State moved back into the AP Top 25 rankings after victories last week against South Florida and Central Florida. Despite their 17-3 record overall, four teams are ahead of the Shockers in the America Athletic Conference standings, including Tulsa who they face on the road on Saturday.

This was expected to be a rebuilding year for Frank Haith's squad, but the Hurricanes have been winning thanks to a defense that holds opponents to just 39 percent shooting from the field and just 28.2 percent from beyond the arc.

Wichita State shoots just 40.7 percent from the field and that number drops to 37.7 percent on the road. That said, the Shockers limit foes to a shooting percentage of 38.4, so Saturday's contest could get ugly.

With Tulsa 10-1 to the Under at home this season, bet it again.


BIG TEN BATTLE

If you're looking for some action before Super Bowl festivities get underway, a Big Ten showdown between Iowa and Illinois should whet your appetition on Sunday. Illinois has won seven games in a row while Iowa was on a five-game winning streak before losing to Maryland on Thursday night.

In conference play Iowa has the highest scoring team in the Big Ten, putting up 77.6 ppg against conference foes. But Illinois has the top defense, holding Big Ten opponents to 60.1 ppg. So who has the edge? Illinois hasn't had much success from deep, ranking outside the Top-300 in 3-point percentage and 3-pointers made. While Illinois usually has an advantage in the paint with big man Kofi Cockburn, he might be slowed down by Iowa center Luka Garza (23.1 ppg, 10.7 rpg).

The Fighting Illini are coming off a victory against Minnesota but went just 21 for 63 from the floor in the game. If they shoot anywhere near that poorly on Sunday they won't be able to keep pace with the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes have an average scoring margin of plus-14.9 ppg at home and are 4-0 SU and ATS in the last four meetings head-to-head. Back Iowa to cover.


MID-MAJOR TO WATCH: STEPHEN F. AUSTIN (18-3 SU, 10-7-1 ATS, 7-11 O/U)

The Lumberjacks are at the top of the Southland Conference standings thanks to an offense that puts up 80.9 ppg (13th in the country) on 49.2 percent shooting from the field. On Saturday they play on the road against Sam Houston State who sit just behind them in the conference standings.

Sam Houston State also averages 80.9 ppg and sits outside the Top-200 schools in scoring defense. The Over on the game total might seem like the obvious play with two-high scoring teams in action, but we're not so sure.

Over the last three games, Stephen F. Austin has seen its scoring dip to 70 ppg on 42.8 percent shooting. And while Sam Houston State runs at the sixth-fastest pace in the country on the road (79.7 possessions per game), the Bearcats slow the pace down at home (73.7 possessions per contest). When you add in the fact that the Lumberjacks pressure defense forces the most turnovers in the country (21.6 per game), we like the Under.


NATIONAL TITLE ODDS

We now have a three-way tie for first place in the National Championship odds list. Baylor, Gonzaga and Kansas are all listed at +1,000 despite Baylor having a better overall and conference record than Kansas, and defeating them 67-55 at Allen Fieldhouse three weeks ago.

The Jayhawks host Texas Tech on Saturday while Baylor faces Texas Christian. Gonzaga should have an easier matchup on the road against San Francisco a program they have defeated in 16 consecutive games dating back to 2012.


BETTING TRENDS

• Home teams have been a good bet to fade over the past seven days. Over the last week, away teams have gone 164-142 ATS (53.6 percent) while away favorites have gone 54-39 ATS (58.3 percent).

• Conference play has not been kind to Oklahoma State. The Cowboys lost 65-50 to Kansas on Tuesday making them 0-7 SU and ATS against Big 12 opponents. They'll try to snap out of their funk against the Oklahoma Sooners on the weekend. With both teams outside the Top-250 in field goal percentage and inside the Top-50 in opponent field goal percentage, the Under might be the play. And for those that like head to head trends, the Under has cashed in nine of the last 11 meetings between the rivals.

• From the conference that brought us Ja Morant, comes the top Over team in the country: the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks! The Skyhawks are absolutely brutal, hanging out near the bottom of the Ohio Valley Conference standings but their terrible defense has them 15-3 O/U this season. On Saturday, the Skyhawks take on Morehead State who has cashed the Under in five of its previous six contests.

Saturday’s Den: Looking at mid-major college hoop leagues……

13) WCC— Gonzaga is 8-0; they’ll be in the NCAA’s, but will anyone else from this league get in? The middle of the WCC has gotten better, and Saint Mary’s/BYU have been upset by teams in the middle, putting them squarely on the NCAA’s bubble. The conference tournament in Las Vegas could wind up being very interesting, especially a BYU-Saint Mary’s semi-final.

12) MAAC— Weird league; every team has 3+ losses, and 3+ wins. The last place team is only 3.5 games out of first place. In other words, the conference tournament in Atlantic City figures to be a circus. Iona has been in the NCAAs the last four years, but they’re playing with an interim coach this season and are struggling at 5-11, 3-6 in MAAC.

11) Horizon— Wright State is 9-1 and leads by two games; Northern Kentucky is the only other team in the league over .500 in league play. Five teams (half the league) are currently 5-5 in Horizon games.

10) Big Sky— Another wide-open league; Eastern Washington is 6-2, Montana is 7-3, despite being only 11-10 overall. Conference tournament is in Boise this year, should be interesting. The two Idaho teams in the league are in last and second-to-last place.

9) CAA— William & Mary has never been in the NCAAs, but they’re in first place in CAA right now, and their coach’s name is Fischer, so he must be smart, right? 🙂 Hofstra, Charleston and Towson are only a game behind the Tribe; Conference tournament is in Washington DC this year and as usual, should be solid entertainment.

8) Former NBA player Darrell Walker (10-year vet) has Little Rock at 10-2 in Sun Belt and in first place, four years after Chris Beard won 30 games with the Trojans. Rob Lanier has Georgia State at 7-3 in his first year with the Panthers. Sun Belt tourney starts out at campus sites; the semis/finals are in New Orleans. Having home court edge figures to be a powerful thing.

7) Southern— Bottom three teams in league are combined 3-25 in conference play, which means the other seven teams are all over .500 in league games. Semi-finals of their tournament figure to be excellent. This is an underrated league whose games should be on TV more.

6) Missouri Valley— Evansville won in Rupp Arena in November, but they’re 0-9 in Valley games. Northern Iowa leads league at 7-2; three teams are 6-3, so Arch Madness figures to be fun. UNI is 18-3 overall, with a win at Colorado; they’re the clear-cut favorite here.

5) Mountain West— San Diego State is jogging to a league title; doubtful they get another team in NCAA’s, unless Aztecs get upset in conference tourney. Not sure who second-best team is; Utah State has been a disappointment, UNLV isn’t deep enough, Colorado State won six of its last seven games. Steve Alford has done better than expected in his first year at Reno.

4) Atlantic 14— Dayton is in NCAA’s; VCU/Rhode Island are both bubble teams that will be a problem if they make the field of 68. Dayton is going to be a popular pick to make the Final Four, maybe too popular. St Joe’s is 0-8; why the hell did they fire Phil Martelli?

3) American— Any team where Memphis is in 6th place has to be pretty good; Tigers are #353 experience team, the youngest team in country. Kelvin Sampson has Houston in first place, Tulsa is a surprising second, Cincinnati/Wichita State are bubble teams. SMU split its last six games, as they try to stay on the bubble.

2) Conference USA— This league is weird; their schedule after Feb 15 is determined by where teams are in standings, to try and boost league’s power ratings. North Texas is in first place as I type this, followed by Louisiana Tech/Western Kentucky. Half the teams in the league are either 4-5 or 5-4 in conference games.

1) Big West— No teams in top 100, so their tournament in Anaheim will be late night fun during Champ Week. Cal-Irvine/Hawai’i lead the league right now; Riverside/Northridge are much-improved, while Santa Barbara has been a disappointment. Who improves the most between now and the conference tournament? League appears to be fairly wide open.
