The top college basketball betting options for Big Monday offers a trio of games in the Big 12 and ACC.

Getting things started as a bonus matchup, the Texas Longhorns will be on the road against the No. 12 West Virginia Mountaineers. At the same time, the NC State Wolfpack travel to Charlottesville to face the Virginia Cavaliers.

Later Monday night, the Oklahoma Sooners tangle with the No. 2 Baylor Bears in Waco to round out the betting action.

Texas Longhorns at No. 12 West Virginia Mountaineers
(ESPNU, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: West Virginia -9, Total 128

Betting Matchup

The Longhorns have lost three of their first five Big 12 games both straight-up and against the spread with Saturday’s 66-57 loss to Kansas as 7 ½-point home underdogs. The are 12-5 SU overall with a 6-11 record ATS after failing to cover in eight of their last 11 contests. The total stayed UNDER in Saturday’s loss and it has stayed UNDER in six of the last nine games.

Junior guard Matt Coleman III’s 12.0 points per game leads a group of five players scoring in double figures.

West Virginia (14-3 SU, 10-7 ATS) should drop a few spots in the rankings with Saturday’s 84-68 loss to Kansas State as a 6 ½-point road favorite. This was their second SU conference loss in five games after losing to Kansas on the road on Jan. 4. This was also the first time the Mountaineers failed to cover the spread in their last six games.

The total has gone OVER in their last two outings after staying UNDER in their previous eight games. Saturday was the first time West Virginia allowed more than 70 points in its last 10 games.

Betting Trends

-- The Longhorns are 2-8 SU in their last 10 road games closing as underdogs. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games getting points on the road.

-- The Mountaineers have won their last eight home games SU as favorites with a 6-2 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER in six of those eight contests.

-- Texas won both meetings last season SU, including a 75-53 romp on the road as a 3 ½-point underdog. The total stayed UNDER in each game. The Longhorns have the 6-3-1 edge ATS over the past 10 matchups.

North Carolina State Wolfpack at Virginia Cavaliers

Betting Matchup

With wins at home against Miami and Clemson as favorites, the Wolfpack (13-5 SU, 9-8-1 ATS) improved to 4-3 SU in the ACC. They failed to cover as 6 ½-point favorites in Saturday’s 60-64 win against the Tigers to fall to 2-4-1 ATS over their last seven games. The total stayed UNDER 139 points in that game and it has stayed UNDER in seven of NC State’s last eight contests.

This team boasts five different players averaging at least 10 PPG as part of a 77.4-point scoring total.

The Cavaliers are also 4-3 SU in conference play as part of an overall record of 12-5. They snapped a three-game skid on Saturday with a 63-58 road victory against Georgia Tech. Virginia covered as a slight two-point favorite but it is still just 6-11 ATS on the year.

The total has stayed UNDER in 10 of the 17 games behind a scoring average of 55.8 PPG and a points-allowed average of 49.5 that is ranked first in the nation.

Oklahoma Sooners at No. 2 Baylor Bears

Betting Matchup

Following a road loss to Iowa State and a loss to Kansas at home (SU and ATS), the Sooners hammered TCU 83-63 on Saturday as 3 ½-point home favorites. They are 3-2 SU in Big 12 play with a 2-3 record ATS. Oklahoma is 12-5 SU overall and 6-10-1 ATS. It is 2-4 ATS this season closing as an underdog. They total went OVER 143 points against TCU after staying UNDER in four-straight games.

Brady Manek scored a career-high 31 points in Saturday’s win.

Baylor continues to state its case for the top spot in the national polls with a SU 14-game winning streak. Saturday’s 75-68 victory on the road against Oklahoma State as 5 ½-point favorites was the Bears’ fifth cover in a row. They are 15-1 SU overall with an 11-5 record ATS. The total went OVER 126 points on Saturday after staying UNDER in their previous four games.

Jared Butler scored 19 points with six assists to help erase a nine-point deficit at the half in that last game.

13) This from VISN, the terrific Las Vegas-based radio station, with regards to betting on over/under win totals in baseball:

If you add up all the season win totals for MLB teams at William Hill books, it comes to 2,457 wins.

One small problem; there are only 2,430 baseball games in a season, so they’ve basically inflated each team’s total by one win.

Sharp bettors turn this in their favor by emphasizing under plays. Just a thought.

12) Rutgers is ranked 24th in the AP basketball poll this week, first time the Scarlet Knights have been in the top 25 since 1979, when ESPN didn’t exist yet and I had a full head of hair.

11) CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein said something over the weekend that was probably true, and also a little disappointing; “The day of mid-majors building programs is over”

Someone in the game he was covering was a transfer from North Texas, usually an also-ran in Conference USA; when a team like North Texas gets its players poached by the bigger $$ teams, all they can hope for is to catch lightning in a bottle now and then to make the NCAA’s, and that is too bad.

9) Golfer Andrew Landry won the PGA event in LaQuinta this weekend, after blowing a six-stroke lead on the back nine Sunday; it was his second PGA Tour win.

In Landry’s five outings prior to this weekend, he won $0, as in five missed cuts in a row; now he is exempt thru 2022, and will be in the tournament of Champion at Kapalua next January, plus The Masters in April.

91 golfers have already qualified for The Masters; 87 players were in LY’s field.

8) Interesting bit of strategy for Villanova Saturday; coming out of a TV timeout with 7:42 left in a 43-43 game with UConn, Villanova came out with five guards on the floor, in order to defend better. Wildcats eventually won a sluggish game 61-55 against a UConn team they’ll be Big East rivals with once again next season.

7) There will be scapegoats; Houston Texans lost 51-31 in the playoffs at Kansas City, and now word comes that DC Romeo Crennel is done with the Texans.

72-year old Crennel has been a football coach for 50 years, the last 39 in the NFL; he’s been head coach in Cleveland, Kansas City. Now his career may be over after one cruddy game. Go figure.

6) Miami Hurricanes landed transfer QB D’Eriq King from Houston.

Former Florida Gators QB Feleipe Franks transfers to another SEC team, Arkansas.

5) Home teams won 41 of the first 48 Big 14 conference games this season, but ACC home teams are only 22-29 SU. Go figure.

4) When UNLV beat New Mexico 99-78 Saturday night, Marvin Coleman became the first Rebel player in 21 years to post a triple-double. Mark Dickel got the last one one against Mississippi Valley State on November 19, 1999. Coleman came to UNLV as a walk-on, but has a scholarship now. UNLV started Mountain West play 6-1, but their schedule has been soft do far.

3) Pelicans 126, Grizzlies 116— Last 11 New Orleans game went over the total; Wednesday is their next game, with Zion Williamson making his NBA debut. Is Williamson going to slow the Pelicans down? He is going to take 20:00 or so away from someone; will they run as much?

A pair of early evening starts in the Big East and the Big Ten highlight Tuesday night’s college basketball betting action.

The No. 13 Butler Bulldogs will try and get back on track in a road game against the No. 9 Villanova Wildcats. At the same time, the No. 21 Illinois Fighting Illini will be on the road in West Lafayette to tangle with the Purdue Boilermakers for the second time this season.

Betting Matchup

Butler’s drop in the latest AP Top 25 was rather steep coming off back-to-back losses to Seton Hall at home and DePaul on the road as a favorite. This slide doubled its previous straight-up losses on the year. The Bulldogs are now 15-3 SU. The two losses against the spread dropped their record to 11-6-1 against the closing number.

The total has gone OVER in their last three games. Senior guard Kamar Baldwin has exceeded his team-high scoring average (15.1 points) in each of his last five starts. Butler is averaging 68.7 points per game and allowing 57.1.

The Wildcats (14-3 SU, 7-9-1 ATS) are 4-1 SU in Big East play and a game and a half behind No. 10 Seton Hall in the standings. The lone loss was a 71-60 setback on Jan. 4 to Marquette as slight 1 ½-point road underdogs. They have failed to cover in their last two wins against DePaul and Connecticut at home.

The total has stayed UNDER in eight of Villanova’s last 10 outings. Jermaine Samuels scored 19 points in Saturday’s win over UConn. The Wildcats are averaging 74.8 PPG and giving up 66.8 points a game on defense.

The Fighting Illini have fought their way into the national rankings with four SU victories in their last four games. This includes Saturday’s 75-71 home victory against Northwestern. Illinois (13-5 SU, 8-8-1 ATS).failed to cover as heavy 12 ½-point home favorites in that latest win to fall to 2-3 ATS in their last five games.

The total has stayed UNDER in seven of its last 10 games. The Fighting Illini were aided by Trent Frazier’s 16 points in Saturday’s win. This includes four three-point buckets. He is one of six different players averaging at least nine points a game as part of the team’s 75.8-point scoring average.

Purdue has dropped three of its last four games SU to fall to 10-8 SU with a 3-4 record in Big Ten play. The Boilermakers have failed to cover in six of their last nine games as part of an 8-10 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER 124 ½ points in Saturday’s 57-50 loss Maryland as 6 ½-point road underdogs and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last four outings.

Purdue has averaged just 59.0 points over its last four games, including a dismal 37 points in an earlier 26-point road loss to Illinois as a two-point underdog on Jan. 5.

13) LSU 84, Florida 82— Almost an epic collapse by the Bayou Bengals, who led 79-69 with 1:15 left in the game. Florida ran an out-of-bounds under play with 0:00.5 left and got an easy layup that would’ve tied the score, but it was ruled to come a split-second too late.

12) 2017 draft:
— Chicago Bears traded up to the #2 spot, giving up two 3rd-round picks an a 4th-round pick to move up one place to take QB Mitch Trubisky with the #2 pick. Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes was picked #10, Deshaun Watson was picked #12.

Oy.

11) Most people seem eager to bet the over in the Super Bowl. So if you like the under, wouldn’t it be a good idea to wait a while, hoping the total goes up and you get a better number?

10) LF Marcell Ozuna signs a one-year, $18M deal with the Braves, who also signed Felix Hernandez to a minor league deal. Ozuna went 9-for-21 against Atlanta in the playoffs LY, while he was playing for the Cardinals.

9) Sounds like the Jaguars are going to hire Jay Gruden as their next offensive coordinator; lot of former Redskin coaches all over the NFL.

8) There is a woman named Red Panda who performs at halftime of basketball games; she balances plates on her head while riding a unicycle. Her act is very popular nationwide.

Evansville announced Todd Lickliter as its new head coach; he signed a multi-year deal and will coach the Purple Aces against Drake tonight. Good move to hire a new coach quickly, or else the current players might jump ship to other programs.

5) ESPN’s obsession with Zion Williamson is baffling; he seems like a good kid, but he played at Duke last year, they didn’t make the Final Four. He gets treated like he is this generation’s version of Kareem, Jordan or Lebron. Not really sure why.

4) Random fact: former NFL QB Elvis Grbac is the football coach at Villa Angela-St. Joseph HS in the Cleveland area. It is interesting to see what retired players in their post-playing lives.

3) Quote of the Day part 2, from Texas alum TJ Ford:
“It’s very disappointing and disheartening to watch the direction Texas Longhorn has now taken. I’ve never witnessed a blowout of this magnitude in BIG12 play like tonight.”

He was talking about the Longhorns getting drubbed at West Virginia Saturday.

2) Was considering going to Las Vegas for the NFL Draft, but decided against it; draft is better on TV, where you can see everything. Draft will be far flung all over the Strip and downtown; will be ton of extra people in town. Hotels are jacking prices up; and since I’m not a great people person to begin with, I’ll take a pass.

Having the red carpet on a stage on the lake in front of Bellagio should be quite a sight.

1) My only comment on the baseball Hall of Fame voting is that I am amazed more than half the voters (52.6%) picked Omar Vizquel as a Hall of Famer. Very good player, not a great player. To get in the Hall of Fame, think you had to be a great player.

This snapped a four-game winning streak both SU and against the spread. They are 12-6 SU overall with a 10-7 record ATS. The total has gone OVER in five of their last eight outings. St. Bonaventure is averaging just 68 points per game and it is allowing 63.3 points a game on defense.

Sophomore guard Kyle Lofton leads the team in points (14.5) and assists (6.5). He had just six points with five assists in Saturday’s loss.

Dayton has positioned itself as one of the top teams in the nation at 16-2 SU. It is 10-7-1 ATS and the total has gone OVER in four of its last five games. The Flyers extended their SU winning streak to seven games with last Friday’s tight 78-76 overtime road win against St. Louis. They failed to cover as seven-point favorites to slip to 4-5 ATS over their last nine contests. Jalen Crutcher hit the winning three-point shot as part of his 21 points in that game.

Obi Toppin has been slowed a bit with a bad ankle as the team’s leading scorer this season (19.6 points).

-- The Bonnies are 2-7 ATS in their last nine road games and the total has stayed UNDER in 10 of their last 13 games played on Wednesdays.

The Lions improved to 3-4 SU in conference play as part of an overall record of 13-5.They are just 2-5-1 ATS over their last eight outings. The total went OVER 137 ½-points in the win against the Buckeyes and it has gone OVER in five of their last seven games.

Lamar Stevens scored 24 points in that latest win. The senior forward leads Penn State in scoring this season with 16.6 PPG. The Lions are averaging 77.9 PPG.

The Wolverines have faded from the national rankings with three losses in their last four games (SU and ATS) . They are 2-4 in six Big Ten games and 11-6 SU overall. Michigan is 3-5 ATS over its last eight contests and the total has gone OVER in its last four games.

With five players averaging at least 10 PPG led by center Jon Teske, the Wolverines are scoring 78.2 points a night. Isaiah Livers (13.6 PPG) remains questionable for Wednesday with a groin injury.
