  • Sky end Sun's seven-game winning streak
    June 23, 2019
    By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) Cheyenne Parker scored 22 points and the Chicago Sky ended the Connecticut Sun's seven-game winning streak with a 95-73 victory Sunday.

Tied at 27 after one quarter, the Sky scored the first 11 points of the second quarter and kept rolling, outscoring the Sun 29-8 in the period for a 56-35 lead at the half.

Allie Quigley scored 14 points while Stefanie Dolson and Diamond DeShields had 12 apiece for Chicago (6-4). Jantel Lavender, the fifth starter had 13 rebounds to go with eight points.

The Sky, coming off a season-low 69 points in a loss at Indiana that ended their four-game winning streak, shot 67% in the first half and 53% for the game.

Connecticut (9-2) was led by Alyssa Thomas with 13 points and Jasmine Thomas with 12. Jonquel Jones had 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Sun, which got seven 3-pointers from Shekinna Stricklen and had 12 as a team in its last win, went 5 of 17 behind the arc and Stricklen was scoreless.

    MYSTICS 89, DREAM 73

ATLANTA (AP) - Elena Delle Donne scored eight of her 21 points in a game-changing 14-0 run to start the second half and Washington rolled to a win over Atlanta.

Kristi Toliver and reserve Tianna Hawkins added 17 points apiece for the Mystics (7-3), who won their third straight game on a four-game road trip. Delle Donne also had 10 rebounds. Toliver hit three 3s, pushing her career total to 581 which is ninth best in league history.

Tiffany Hayes led the Dream (2-7), who led 45-42 at the half, with 18 points. Monique Billings came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 14 rebounds.

    MERCURY 82, SPARKS 72

PHOENIX (AP) - Leilani Mitchell scored 22 points in her first start of the season and Phoenix handed Los Angeles its fourth-straight loss.

Briann January and DeWanna Bonner scored 15 points each, Brittney Griner had 13 and Essence Carson 11 for the Mercury (3-5), who had lost three straight. Griner blocked two shots for 588, breaking a tie with Lauren Jackson for third in league history.

Candace Parker and Chiney Ogwumike led the Sparks (4-6) with 12 points apiece. Parker added 10 rebounds for a double-double in just her third game of the season.

    STORM 65, FEVER 61

SEATTLE (AP) - Jewell Loyd scored 21 points, including the go-ahead basket with 24.6 seconds left, to lift Seattle over Indiana.

Erica Wheeler scored seven straight points for the Fever, the last two coming from the free throw line to tie the game at 61 with 35 seconds remaining. Loyd responded with a driving layup 10 seconds later. The Storm defense forced Wheeler into a difficult, contested layup with eight seconds to go and Natasha Howard came up with the loose ball and drew a foul. She hit both free throws with 5.6 seconds left to seal the win.

Alysha Clark and Shavonte Zellous added 11 points apiece for the Storm (7-4), who won their second-straight since coach Dan Hughes returned from cancer treatments.

Wheeler led the Fever with 18 points and Kelsey Mitchell had 13.

      • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Caeser’s posted NFL player props for this season:

        — Lamar Jackson over/under passing yards: 2,679.5

        — Baker Mayfield passing yards: 4,331.5

        — Ben Roethlisberger passing yards: 4,405.5

        — Andy Dalton passing yards: 3,511.5

        — Matthew Stafford passing TD’s: 25.5

        — Kirk Cousins passing TD’s: 28.5

        **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

        13) Long time ago when I was in college, had a summer job for New York State; I worked in an office, had to dress like an adult— think I was 18. Six of us were hired for the summer.

One of the other guys played college hockey; at the end of the summer, we all had to write a letter of resignation that they put in the file- for some reason this guy didn’t do that, so in the last hour of the last day we’re there, someone tells him he has to write the letter- the rest of us had all handed in typed letters of resignation.

He takes a notebook, rips out a piece of paper, and with a magic marker writes “I QUIT!!!!” on it and signs the bottom and hands it in to the boss and walks out, so to this day, somewhere in the archives, there is this letter.

Not sure what reminded me of that today, but it was funny as hell when it happened.

        12) Former NBA star Stephon Marbury said Monday that he’s been named head coach of the Beijing Royal Fighters, a Chinese Basketball Association team. Marbury is 42 now; he retired as a player last year.

        11) Mets had a news conference Monday afternoon where manager Mickey Callaway didn’t apologize for cursing out a Newsday reporter Sunday; couple hours later, they had another news conference, where Callaway apologized for not apologizing the first time. Not sure if he actually apologized for cursing out the writer, but he did apologize for something. What a mess.

        10) Right now, the Lakers’ over/under win total for next year is 53.5; how do you bet on this either way, without knowing who the hell is going to be playing for them? As the roster stands right now, they’re not a 54-win team.

        9) Fantasy baseball tip: I’m in a Monday-Sunday head-head league; we get four pickups a month and I was down to my last pick-up this month, needing to find a shortstop for the next two weeks (Story/Seager are both on IL).

Was deciding between Brock Holt/Chris Taylor Friday night, but in a rare fit of wisdom, decided to wait until Sunday night to make the call. Good thing; Holt hurt his hamstring Saturday, which made it unnecessary to make the decision. Hope Taylor has a hot couple of weeks.

        8) With Marlins’ C Jorge Alfaro on the IL, 35-year old Wilkin Castillo was brought up from AAA and he had a big hit in Saturday’s 5-3 win in Philly.

Castillo hadn’t been in the major leagues since batting three times in four games for the ’09 Reds. Imagine what he must’ve felt like, being back in The Show for the first time in a decade?

        7) Baseball stuff:
        — Minnesota signed P Cody Allen to a free agent contract.
        — Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks (torn UCL) is on the IL.
        — Astros activated OF George Springer, P Collin McHugh from the IL.

        6) Phoenix Suns declined Jimmer Fredette’s team option, Warriors say he’ll join them in summer league, so summer league just got a little more interesting. Summer league starts at the end of next week; if you like the NBA, do yourself a favor and go watch it in person some time.

Its in Las Vegas, so even if you wind up hating summer league, chances are you’ll find something to occupy your time, of that I am not uncertain.

        5) Portland Traiblazers are trading Evan Turner to Atlanta for Kent Bazemore.

        4) NBA fined the New York Knicks $50,000 for refusing to credential the New York Daily News for a press conference last week. Tough week for the media in the Big Apple.

        3) Steven Matz’s first inning ERA this season is 10.93; in 15 starts, he’s allowed 10 first inning home runs. No bueno.

        2) There have already been seven games this season where both sides hit 4+ homers; all of last season, there were only three games like that.

        1) Mike Conley won both the 2018-19 Twyman-Stokes Teammate of the Year Award and NBA Sportsmanship Award, right after he gets traded to Utah. Wonder what the fans in Memphis are thinking when such a good guy/popular player (12 years with Grizzlies) gets traded away?

          Season Totals To Date

-- Underdogs 34-23-2 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams are 34-25 SU
-- Road teams are 29-28-2 ATS
          -- The 'under' is 36-23

          Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (2-7 SU, 3-6 ATS) posted an outright win as a one-point underdog, but they lost their past two outings by 10 or more points. While they're not winning games, they're at least a respectable 3-2 ATS over the past five outings. The 'over' has also connected in each of the past three, mainly thanks to a lack of defense. The Dream have allowed 84.3 PPG over the past three outings.

-- Chicago (6-3 SU, 6-3 ATS) slipped up as a 4 1/2-point favorite at home against Indiana (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS) in their mid-week game, but they rebounded to hand Connecticut (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) just their second setback of the season. The Sky have rebounded after a slow start to go 5-1 SU/ATS across the past six.

-- The Sun saw their seven-game winning streak snapped by the Sky. While they've been winning, they're just 1-3 ATS across the past four, and 2-4 ATS in the past six outings. The 'over' has connected in three of the past four contests, too.

-- Atlanta (2-6 SU, 4-4 ATS) was treated rudely in Las Vegas (5-4 SU, 4-5 ATS) by former teammate Liz Cambage on Saturday, falling 86-68 as 14 1/2-point underdogs, snapping a mini two-game win and cover streak. The over result also snapped a seven-game under run.

-- The Aces have hit the 'over' in consecutive games for the first time this season, as they're starting to jell on offense a little. Las Vegas is up to second in the WNBA in offense, registering 83.2 PPG, and they're No. 1 in 3-point shooting percentage at 38.2. They're also No. 1 in field-goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to hit just 38.6 percent form the field.

-- Los Angeles (4-6 SU, 3-6-1 ATS) fired out to a nice start, but they have since dropped four in a row and failed to cover in each of the outings as favorites. In fact, the Sparks are 0-4-1 ATS as a favorite this season.

-- Minnesota (5-5 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) slapped the brakes on a four-game losing streak, pushing past New York (3-7 SU, 4-5-1 ATS) by a 92-83 score on Saturday as an 8 1/2-point favorite. The Lynx have covered three in a row.

-- The Liberty entered the week with three wins and cover across their past four outings, but they dropped a pair of games this week, including a 91-83 decision against the Sky as two-point favorites. The Liberty are 0-2 SU/ATS as a favorite this season.

-- Phoenix (3-5 SU, 3-4-1 ATS) snapped a three-game losing streak and non-cover streak in a 10-point win over L.A. on Sunday. The over result in that game also put the end to a three-game under skid.

-- Seattle (7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) started out rather slowly, alternating wins and losses across their first six. However, after a 3-3 SU/ATS start, the defending WNBA champs are 4-1 SU/3-2 ATS across the past five outings. The 'under' has also connected in four in a row heading into the new week.

-- Washington (7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS) is on a roll, winning and cover in three straight games during their current road trip. The last stop is in Chicago on Wednesday.

                    • Aces edge Storm 60-56
                      June 26, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) Liz Cambage had 14 points and 13 rebounds, A'ja Wilson added 12 points, eight boards and three blocks, and the Las Vegas Aces used a closing 7-1 run to beat the short-handed Seattle Storm 60-56 on Tuesday night.

Seattle's second-leading scorer Jewell Loyd injured her right ankle early in the first quarter trying to finish a fast-break layup. She remained on the floor for several minutes before slowly walking to the locker room with the help of two others. She later appeared on the bench with crutches.

Wilson gave Las Vegas a 57-55 lead by converting a contested layup and she was fouled after grabbing a rebound on the other end. She made 1 of 2 free throws with 19 seconds left and blocked Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis' 3-pointer to seal it.

Kayla McBride added 12 points for Las Vegas (6-4), which shot just 31%, including 3 of 17 from 3-point range.

Natasha Howard finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Seattle (7-5) after playing just 12 minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Loyd had totaled 44 points in her previous last two games. The Storm are already missing reigning MVP Breanna Stewart and all-time assist leader Sue Bird to injuries. They did get back Jordin Canada, who had been sidelined for a few games with a bone bruise.

                      LYNX 78, FEVER 74

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Odyssey Sims scored 25 points, including two free throws with 29.1 seconds left, and Minnesota held off Indiana despite blowing a 22-point lead.

Minnesota was ahead 43-23 at halftime until Indiana scored 24 of the next 30 points to tie it at 60. Kelsey Mitchell sank a fade-away 3-pointer with 6:07 remaining in the fourth quarter for the Fever's first lead, 63-61, since a 5-4 advantage.

But Indiana did not score again until the 1:58 mark as Minnesota had 10 straight points, capped by Damiris Dantas' 3-pointer, to rebuild its lead to 71-63. The Fever did not get closer than three points the rest of the way.

Napheesa Collier added 16 points and Sylvia Fowles had nine points and 11 rebounds for Minnesota (6-5). Sims also had seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals.

Mitchell scored 17 points and Erica Wheeler added 13 for Indiana (5-7), which would have set a team record for largest comeback with a victory.

Indiana was coming off a three-game road swing, ending with travel woes returning home. Mechanical issues with a plane in Seattle forced Indiana to miss its connecting flight in Atlanta and after alternative travel options were exhausted, the 18-member traveling party embarked on an 8 +-hour bus trip from Georgia to Indiana. The Fever begin a three-game road swing on Friday at Phoenix.

                              • Washington Mystics at Chicago Sky (+5.5, 164.5)

The Mystics and Sky have a high-noon shootout scheduled Wednesday, and WNBA bettors who are balancing action and work have an opportunity to get in and out of this one in a hurry.

Washington and Chicago rank No. 2 and No. 3 in first quarter points per game, with the Mystics posting 23.5 and the Sky averaging 22.9 in the first 10 minutes. Both teams shoot a blistering percentage in the first frame as well, with Washington knocking down half of its takes and Chicago making more than 48 percent of its first-quarter field goals.

Defensively, the Mystics and Sky have enjoyed early-game shootouts with Washington allowing almost 21 points per first frame (ninth in WNBA) and Chicago giving up 21.8 points to foes in the first quarter (12th in the WNBA).

These teams met in D.C. back on June 5 and combined for 52 first-quarter points, blasting Over the first-quarter total. Bettors looking for some quick and dirty daytime action have an edge here with the Over in the first Q again Wednesday.

                                PREDICTION: Over first-quarter 41.5

Connecticut Sun at Dallas Wings (+8.5, 150.5)

It’s a first-versus-worst matchup in Dallas tonight, with the league-leading Sun visiting the 2-6 Wings. Dallas is playing better basketball – outside of a recent road loss in Las Vegas (but don’t we all lose something every time we visit Sin City?) – especially at home.

The Wings picked up their first two wins of the season inside College Park Center in the middle of the month and looking back over their four home stands on the season, they own a +4.5 margin of victory versus an average pointspread of +4.12 which has led to a 3-1 ATS mark as hosts.

Dallas ranks as the No. 2 defense in the league but much of that has to do with the team’s methodical pace with the basketball. The Wings are the slowest pace in the WNBA at 91.28 and that alone limits opponents to only 64.4 field goal attempts per game. That said, Dallas has done a good job defending those looks, with foes shooting just under 41 percent per game.

Connecticut likes to get out and run, averaging a league-high 12 points of fast breaks per contest and pushing a pace of 96.16, while attempting more than 71 shots an outing. Given the size of this spread, Dallas’ strong showings at home, and the Wings’ slow-motion style limiting the Sun’s scoring chances, there’s value with the home dog Wednesday.

                                PREDICTION: Dallas +8.5

                                Tuesday’s picks: 2-0
                                Season to date: 24-16
