        June 26, 2019
        By The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Arike Ogunbowale made a late go-ahead 3-pointer and finished with 23 points to help the Dallas Wings beat the Connecticut Sun 74-73 on Wednesday night.

Down 13 late in the third quarter, Connecticut opened the fourth on a 15-2 run to take a 66-63 lead.

Ogunbowale, a rookie who had 25 points on Saturday night in a loss in Las Vegas, banked in a long 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining for a 72-70 lead. Neither team scored again until Allisha Gray made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to give Dallas a four-point lead. Jasmine Thomas answered with a corner 3, but Gray ran out the clock at the other end.

Isabelle Harrison added 13 points for Dallas (3-6).

            — Bengals’ rookie LT Jonah Williams (shoulder) will likely miss the whole 2019 season.

            Quote of the Day
“I’m not a kid anymore, I know I’m getting old. In Vegas, I played the slot machine. Three prunes came up.”
            Rodney Dangerfield

            Thursday’s quiz
What number did Michael Jordan wear the year he played minor league baseball?

            Wednesday’s quiz
Burgess Meredith played Rocky Balboa’s trainer Mick in the Rocky movies; Meredith played the Penguin on the old Batman TV series.

            Tuesday’s quiz
Before moving to Atlanta, the Braves called Milwaukee, Boston home.

            *********************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

            13) When you’re a college basketball coach trying to win, you do all kinds of stuff to get players:

Oklahoma State hired the older brother of top prospect Cade Cunningham as its new assistant coach; this is perfectly legit, has been done many times, usually with a father- that is how Kansas got Danny Manning back in the 80’s, they hired his father as an assistant. Ed Manning played in the NBA, but was a truck driver when Kansas hired him.

Cannen Cunningham played at SMU from 2011-15 and spent last season at Tulane as the associate director of video operations under Mike Dunleavy Sr.

            12) What happens if the Cunningham kid goes somewhere other than Oklahoma State? Does Oklahoma State tell the brother to take a hike? Chances are strong the kid is going to OSU.

            11) The last few weeks, I’ve heard five different Bronx baseball fans refer to DJ LeMahieu as “this kid LeMahieu” as if they had never heard of him before this year. Oy.

LeMahieu will be 31 on July 13; this is his ninth year in the major leagues, he has 1,125 hits and a career on-base %age of .353. Two All-Star games, three Golden Gloves; he’s been a really good player for several years, but since a lot of the Bronx fanbase just follows their own team and not the whole sport, they just don’t know.

            10) Blake Snell’s last three starts for Tampa Bay:

            7 IP, 18 hits, 17 runs (16 earned), 9 walks, 7 strikeouts.

When you’re using an opener 60% of the time, you need your two aces to give the bullpen lot of rest and that isn’t happening for the Rays right now.

            9) Kerry Blackshear transfers from Virginia Tech to Florida, big pickup for the Gators- some pundits have now put Florida in the preseason top 10 for college hoop.

            8) Middle of the night a few nights ago, Moneyball appeared on TV, which was fine with me; hadn’t seen it in a while. I won’t embarrass myself by telling you how many times I’ve seen it, but couple of thoughts popped up in my head while watching it this time:

            — Bill James should be in the Hall of Fame, as a contributor; he certainly changed the game.
            — There must be some great discussions/arguments behind the scenes now, with the old school baseball guys taking on the numbers guys, as far as strategy goes.

            7) Baseball stuff:
            — Bronx put Giancarlo Stanton (knee) back on the IL.
            — Detroit recalled 3B Jeimer Candelario from AAA.
            — Angels recalled P’s Jaime Barria, Trevor Cahill
            — Twins’ OF Eddie Rosario (hamstring) left Wednesday’s game early

            6) Kevin Durant declined his $31.5M player option and will be an unrestricted free agent; will be interesting to see what kind of contract a 31-year old guy (he turns 31 in September) with a torn achilles gets. History tells us achilles injuries aren’t kind to basketball players.

            5) New York City is made up of five boroughs; Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and Queens- the borough of Queens, by itself, has more people than 16 states.

            4) I’ll say this once and only once: I don’t give a rat’s ass who wins the MVP in any league, ever, in any sport. Some days, it is all ESPN talks about. Individual awards? They. do. not. matter.

            3) White Sox 8, Red Sox 7— Jose Abreu homered in the ninth inning for the win.

            2) San Diego 10, Baltimore 5— Orioles have allowed 165 home runs n 80 games; not good.

            1) Bob Ley is retiring after 40 years at ESPN; he joined ESPN as a SportsCenter anchor in 1979, on the third day ESPN was on the air. In 1980, he hosted the first NCAA selection show and live broadcast of the NFL draft and continued in that role for the next nine years.

In a modern age when every TV studio person has to have their own shtick, Ley had no shtick, he was just really good at his job, and he will be missed.

The Sparks are 0-3 since the former MVP joined the lineup (and on a four-game losing skid entering Thursday) after missing the start of the schedule with a hamstring injury, but Parker finally showed shades of her veteran talent with a 12-point effort through 28 and a half minutes (3-for-10 shooting) in Sunday’s loss at Phoenix. That came on the heels of a collective five points on a combined 2-for-18 shooting in her first two games back.

Parker gets a big challenge in the talent-rich Las Vegas Aces Thursday. However, the Aces are another WNBA team not meeting its lofty expectations. Las Vegas has been terribly inconsistent, most notably on the road where it owns a 1-3 mark against the spread despite playing some of the league’s weakest defenses. The Aces have allowed an extra 7.2 points against when in the role of visitors, which makes a big difference to those laying the points with Vegas as a road favorite in each of those four away games.

The Sparks have had some time to rest (played three games - two on the road - in six days) and reflect on their poor start to the year since losing at Phoenix last weekend and entered this week’s practices with the largest number of healthy bodies they’ve had all season. That time should help with the chemistry that’s been lacking in Derek Fisher’s new offense, which has stumbled during this losing skid – averaging 69.5 points during those four losses.

Those quality practice reps and a sense of desperation on their home floor will evoke a spirited effort from L.A. – at least in the opening 20 minutes. Things may fall apart after the break, so keep this one to the first half.

                  PREDICTION: Los Angeles first-half +1

                  Wednesday’s picks: 2-0
                  Season to date: 26-16

Friday’s List of 13; Random stuff with weekend here…….

                      13) Over the last year, state of Nevada turned a $310M booking sports bets.

During that same time, they’ve made a $3.3B profit on penny slots. Thats billion, with a B.

                      12) Speaking of which, May 2019 was the first month ever where more money was legally bet on sports in New Jersey ($318.9M) than in Nevada ($317.4M).

                      11) Ralph Michaels posted some great knowledge on Twitter Thursday:

Since 2011 there have been 74 games with a line of -330 or higher; the favorite went 61-13 in those games. Of the 13 teams that lost (Red Sox were #13 Wednesday), those teams went 5-7 in their next game after the loss, with an average line of -$199.

Oddity here is that the Red Sox don’t play again until Saturday in London.

                      10) Rays 5, Twins 2 (18)
                      — 2nd time in ten days Minnesota played a 17+-inning game.
                      — Twins scored twice in first inning, never scored again.

                      — Five players went 0-7 in same game for first time since 1901.

                      9) Only other teams in the last 40 years that played a 17-inning game and a longer game within ten days of each other:

2013 BlueJays – lost their next two before going on an 11-game winning streak.
1980 Padres – went 4-7 and then went on a 7-game winning streak.

                      8) The out-of-business AAF spent $40M to develop its in-game betting app; MGM wound up paying $5,125,000 to acquire the app.

                      7) Baseball stuff:
                      — Twins put C Willians Astudillo (oblique) on IL.
                      — Cubs activated P Craig Kimbrel
                      — Detroit P Spencer Turnbull left after two innings Thursday
                      — White Sox DFA’d 1B Yonder Alonso, three days before his charity bowling event, which also benefits White Sox charities- awkward.

                      6) Phillies 6, Mets 3— Juan Segura hit a walk-off HR for Philly, which swept the Mets despite trailing by 2+ runs in all four games. Edwin Diaz gave up five runs in an ugly ninth inning.

Gambling is hard; total on this game was 9; Phillies led 1-0 after the 8th inning.

                      5) Last time the Phillies swept a 4-game series despite trailing in the 5th inning or later in every game was September 24-26, 1929. Nineteen. Twenty. Nine.

                      4) College basketball transfer portal:
                      — Quentin Grimes transfers from Kansas to Houston.

                      3) Cubs 9, Braves 7— Craig Kimbrel gets a save in his first appearance as a Cub.

Washington sent the Pelicans cash to complete what is now a 3-team trade.

                        • Preview: Wings (3-6) at Liberty (3-7)
                          Date: June 28, 2019 7:30 PM EDT

Rookie Arike Ogunbowale has typified the play of the Dallas Wings thus far: Inconsistency with flashes of promise. Coming off a victory over the league's best team, the Wings again bid for their first road win of 2019 when they face the New York Liberty on Friday night.

Ogunbowale was a key contributor to Dallas' 74-73 victory over Connecticut on Wednesday night, finishing with 23 points and banking a key 3-pointer with 1:23 left to give the Wings (3-6) a 72-70 lead. She became the first Wings rookie to finish with back-to-back 20-point games since 2014, but what pleased coach Brian Agler more was her efficiency.

After needing 26 shots to score 25 points in a loss to Las Vegas, Ogunbowale was 10 of 17 from the field versus the Sun. The fifth overall pick is averaging 12.9 points while shooting 34.8 percent thus far.

"That's what we're looking for," Agler told the Dallas Morning News. "Good players and great players, they don't shoot 40 percent or below. They're usually every other game they're 50 percent or above. So that's what we're looking for."

Isabelle Harrison added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench as the Wings now look to end an 11-game road losing that dates to a 92-77 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on July 12. It also does not include their 101-83 first-round playoff loss at Phoenix.

"We have it in us. We have a really good defensive team and we can score and when we make sure that works to our benefit, we're unstoppable." Harrison said. "But we've really got to carry this energy, momentum, focus and dedication on the road."

The Wings continue to play without starting guard Skylar Diggins, who is out on maternity leave, and forward Glory Johnson, who is representing Montenegro at the EuroBasket tournament.

New York (3-7) has also dealt with inconsistency and is looking to avoid a third consecutive loss. The Liberty's defensive shortcomings were again evident in a 92-83 loss at Minnesota on Saturday that marked the fourth consecutive game they have allowed 90 or more points.

Kia Nurse scored 24 points and Tina Charles added 22, but New York allowed Minnesota to shoot 51.6 percent and failed to recover from being outscored 28-14 in the third quarter. The Liberty are last in the league in scoring defense at 86.7 points allowed per game - 5.4 points worse than the next-closest team. They are also last in defensive field goal percentage (44.8).

Nurse has averaged 20.4 points in her last five games, and her 16.1 per game trails only Charles (18.1). The Liberty are also missing players who are competing in the EuroBasket tournament, most notably starting forward and leading rebounder Amanda Zahui B. Bria Hartley, Marine Johannes and Kiah Stokes are also in Serbia.

Dallas took two of three games between the teams and split its two visits to New York. The last matchup saw the since-departed Liz Cambage set a WNBA single-game record with 53 points to power the Wings to a 104-87 victory.

                          • Preview: Fever (5-7) at Mercury (3-5)
                            Date: June 28, 2019 10:00 PM EDT

The Phoenix Mercury are at their best when they have a third scorer to complement DeWanna Bonner and Britney Griner. Whether that could be Diana Taurasi for Friday night's game against the Indiana Fever is yet to be determined, but they may have found another option in Leilani Mitchell.

The Mercury (3-5) are still waiting on Taurasi - the WNBA's all-time leading scorer - to make her season debut after undergoing back surgery in April. She has been practicing with the team the past two weeks but was held out of Sunday's 82-72 win over Los Angeles as the medical staff continued to take a cautious approach with the 37-year-old.

Enter Mitchell, who was cut by the Mercury last month to stay under the cap but then re-signed to provide depth for the expected departure of Yvonne Turner to play for Hungary in the EuroBasket tournament in Serbia. Mitchell got her first start Sunday and responded with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists as the Mercury improved to 3-0 when they have at least three scorers reach double figures.

"She controls the tempo of the game, she understands everything I want to run," Mercury coach Sandy Brondello told the Arizona Republic. "She created offense just by pushing the ball and running. She's crafty."

Mitchell is averaging 11.8 points while shooting 47.2 percent (17 for 36) from 3-point range. Taurasi's status for this game is unknown after taking a leave of absence Tuesday and Wednesday for personal reasons. Bonner and Griner, who combined for 29 points and 16 rebounds, continue to be 1-2 in scoring for Phoenix.

Bonner is averaging a league-high 20.9 points while Griner is contributing 16.4 per contest. The duo totaled 51 points in Phoenix's 94-87 win at Indiana on June 9 in which Mitchell chipped in 17 off the bench and shot 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Indiana (5-7) is opening a set of games on back-to-back nights and trying to avoid a third straight loss. The Fever were again denied in their bid to match their 2018 win total with Tuesday's 78-74 loss to Minnesota.

Kelsey Mitchell scored 17 points as Indiana made a furious second-half rally to erase a 22-point deficit - the largest comeback in club history - but the Fever were unable to sustain the charge as the Lynx regrouped and regained control with a 10-0 burst in a 4:09 span of the fourth quarter.

"You get tired of the same song and dance," Mitchell told the Indianapolis Star while refusing to use the team's logistical travel issues as an excuse. "You get tired of coming out flat, finishing the first half flat and having to play catch up is tough."

Erica Wheeler added 13 points and rookie Teaira McCowan chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds. McCowan, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, had all sorts of issues trying to guard Griner in the first meeting as the Mercury center hit 11 of 21 shots. McCowan, though, has averaged 9.8 points and 10.4 rebounds in her last five games while recording a pair of double-doubles.

                            • Preview: Sky (6-4) at Storm (7-5)
                              Date: June 28, 2019 10:00 PM EDT

If the Seattle Storm are going to remain undefeated at home and keep from being swept in the season series by the Chicago Sky, they'll likely have to do it without another key contributor.

The Storm could be minus injured guard Jewell Loyd when they try to improve to 5-0 at home Friday night against the Sky.

Seattle (7-5) is opening a stretch of six consecutive games at Alaska Airlines Arena, one of its two home venues for 2019. The Storm have not won their first five home contests since 2010, but have concern about Loyd going forward.

Second the team with 15.8 points per game, Loyd suffered a sprained ankle early in Tuesday's 60-56 loss at Las Vegas. Her potentially extended absence would be another blow to the Storm, who are minus reigning WNBA MVP Breanna Stewart (Achilles) for the season and legend Sue Bird (knee) indefinitely.

Playing all but four minutes without Loyd, Seattle shot 30.1 percent from the field and went 7 of 30 from 3-point range against Las Vegas. However, it was in position to win late before the Aces closed on a 7-1 run to keep Seattle from a third consecutive victory.

Natasha Howard had 14 points and 12 boards for Seattle, which still remains one of the league's top teams despite its injuries. Howard is an MVP candidate while averaging 18.9 points and 9.2 rebounds. and point Jordin Canada (9.0 points per game, 5.0 assists per game) has been more than serviceable in place of Bird.

That probably has not been lost on the Sky, who are quite familiar with the defending WNBA champs this season.

"I think the season's taken on a life of its own and players are stepping up," Chicago guard Allie Quigley told her team's official website.

The Storm will try to avoid a third straight loss in 2019 to Chicago (6-4), which last swept the season series in 2015. The previous two meetings this season came at Chicago and were decided by a combined 11 points.

The Sky also will be looking to win a third consecutive contest on the road, where they tip off a three-game West Coast stretch that features stops at Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Chicago, however, needs to bounce back from an 81-74 home loss to Washington on Wednesday. Quigley made four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points for the Sky, who went 5 of 22 from beyond the arc and committed 17 turnovers that the Mystics turned into 17 points.

"We're better than we showed and we'll show it next game," Chicago coach James Wade said. "They work hard, and they'll work hard to get this right."

Quigley, who has totaled 35 points on 14-of-25 shooting in the last two games, scored a season-high 25 in an 83-79 win over Seattle on June 1. Howard, meanwhile combined for 41 points in the first two meetings with Chicago.

SEATTLE (AP) Jordin Canada scored 17 points, Natasha Howard added 14 points and nine rebounds and the Seattle Storm beat the Chicago Sky 79-76 on Friday night.

Alysha Clark banked in a one-handed shot just before the shot-clock buzzer to give Seattle a 79-76 lead with 10.1 seconds left. Chicago forward Diamond DeShields missed a 3-pointer, and Seattle ran out the clock.

Mercedes Russell added 12 points to help defending champion Seattle (8-5) improve to 5-0 at home.

Jewell Loyd, Seattle's second-leading scorer, sat on the bench with a walking boot on her right ankle. The Seattle Times reported she will miss at least two weeks after spraining her ankle Tuesday night in a loss at Las Vegas.

DeShields led Chicago (6-5) with 19 points, and Jantel Lavender had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

It was the first of six consecutive games for Seattle at Alaska Airlines Arena on the University of Washington campus.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Reshanda Gray hit one of two free throws with 24.4 seconds left to lift New York past Dallas.

Arike Ogunbowale missed two late shots that would have given Dallas the lead. Her floater in the lane missed with 5.7 seconds, and Dallas fouled Brittany Boyd after her rebound. Boyd missed both free throws, giving Ogunbowale one final chance, but her off-balance shot from 30 feet missed. She finished 2 for 23 from the field.
