  • Sunday’s 6-pack

Six best college football QB’s for this year, according to Phil Steele’s magazine:

    — Trevor Lawrence, Clemson

    — Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

    — Sam Ehlinger, Texas

    — Justin Herbert, Oregon

    — Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma

    — D’Eriq King, Houston

    Tweet of the Day
“Ok, I say we all chip in and buy Whataburger back. Make honey butter chicken biscuits available all day, add kolaches to the menu and change nothing else. Especially not the ketchup.”
JJ Watt, after Whataburger was sold to a Chicago investment firm

    Sunday’s quiz
Where did JJ Watt play his college football?

    Saturday’s quiz
Chicago White Sox used to play their home games at Comiskey Park.

    Friday’s quiz
Tom Seaver, Mike Piazza are the two players who have had their number retired by the Mets.

    Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday…….

    13) Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. Hope you all have a great day.

    12) There are 25 guys in the major leagues right now whose dads also played in the big leagues.

    11) New Orleans Pelicans traded Anthony Davis to the Lakers Saturday, for three players and three first round draft picks, one of which is the #4 pick in next week’s draft.

Celtics wouldn’t include Jayson Tatum in trade talks, which was a deal breaker for them.

    10) There is no clock in baseball, except for the pitch clock:

Padres trailed 11-5 in the ninth inning Friday night, but tied the game and wound up winning 16-12 in extra innings. Horrific loss for the Rockies, who’ve played well recently.

    9) Why do the Padres play Austin Hedges behind the plate every day?

He has a reputation as a great defensive catcher, but he’s hitting .217 at home, .154 on the road- it is like having two pitchers in the lineup. The guy can’t hit.

    8) Dodgers led the Cubs 5-3 in 9th inning Friday night; Chicago had a guy on 2nd with two out, so tying run is at the plate. LA closer Kenley Jansen balks intentionally, so the runner can go to third base. Why?

Because when a runner is on second base, he can see the catcher’s signs, and relay them to the hitter; Jansen didn’t want that to happen, so he balked the runner to third and got the save.

    7) Baseball stuff:
    — Cubs put Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) on the IL
    — Tigers put C Grayson Greiner (back) on IL.
    — Indians traded P Brooks Pounders to the Mets for cash.

    6) Pro golfer Patrick Reed hit a shot with a wedge on the 18th hole Friday, and he didn’t like it. He really, really didn’t like it.

He disliked it so much that he snapped the wedge in half over his knee, the way Bo Jackson used to do with his bat after he struck out. Looked like Kevin Costner in Tin Cup.

    5) Cubs are considering putting a sportsbook in Wrigley Field, which would be interesting.

    4) Angels DFA’d closer Cody Allen, who is getting $8.5M from the Halos this season; his ERA this year is 8.33, with 20 walks in 23 IP. Not good.

    3) Phillies 8, Braves 5— Scary moment when Atlanta starter Sean Newcomb got drilled in the back of his head by a 102 mph liner off JT Realmuto’s bat. Newcomb left the game but is OK.

    2) There are rumors that even though this is Bruce Bochy’s last year managing the Giants, he may not be done managing. Bochy could manage France in the next WBC (he was born there) or take a shot with another big league team, if that chance comes up. Who wouldn’t want to hire a guy who has won three World Series?

    1) Christmas in June; the Phil Steele college football magazine came in the mail Saturday, marking the unofficial start to the college football season. Let the studying begin.

      • Preview: Storm (5-3) at Sun (7-1)
        Date: June 16, 2019 3:30 PM EDT

They may be short-handed in terms of personnel, but the Seattle Storm are getting by with their championship mettle.

The reigning WNBA champions wrap up a four-game road swing Sunday versus a Connecticut Sun team looking for a franchise-record 12th consecutive home win.

The Storm (5-3) will be without star forward Breanna Stewart this year due to an Achilles injury, and fellow starter Sue Bird remains sidelined indefinitely following knee surgery. Seattle, though, has found other sources of offense - primarily Natasha Howard and Jewell Loyd - and has shown greater cohesion with each passing contest on this trip, a feat all the more impressive considering coach Dan Hughes has yet to be on the sidelines for a game after being treated to remove a cancerous tumor from his digestive tract.

Loyd's go-ahead jumper with 8.6 seconds to play lifted the Storm to a 74-71 victory over the Washington Mystics on Friday night in a rematch of last year's WNBA Finals. Seattle closed the game on a 10-0 run over the final 2:47 and erased a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit as both Howard and Mercedes Russell posted double-doubles, with Russell finishing with career highs of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

"We wanted to get Tash in some space so we ran a nice high ball screen with a clear outside that we normally run for Tash," Loyd said when recounting the final play, "and they went with her because she's been killing it all night and left me open in my sweet spot and God willing, I was able to hit that shot."

Howard, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double, is third in the league in scoring (19.5 ppg) and fourth in rebounds (9.4). She will meet her equal in current two-time WNBA Player of the Week Jonquel Jones, who is fifth and first in those respective categories with 17.8 points and 12.1 rebounds per game.

Jones notched her fifth double-double in Connecticut's 85-81 victory over Minnesota on Friday night, totaling 16 points and 12 rebounds. After entering the game 10th in the league in shooting at 39.1 percent, the Sun (7-1) knocked down 50 percent of their attempts against the Lynx and Shekinna Stricklen hit 4 of 5 from 3-point range wile also finishing with 16 points.

"We had high assists on baskets, especially in the first half," Sun coach Curt Miller told the team's official Twitter account, "so we were moving the ball, sharing the ball, and we got the ball in the paint it created opportunities to kick the ball back out. We haven't had that all year, so making shots, high assists on those baskets is big for the way we play."

Connecticut, which has won five straight overall, is trying to break the franchise record of 11 consecutive home victories originally established from Sept. 19, 2004-July 28, 2005. The Sun made their only two WNBA Finals appearances in those seasons, losing to the Storm in 2004.

The Storm are the last opposing team to leave Mohegan Sun with a victory, winning 78-65 on July 20 as Loyd scored 20 of her season-high 31 points in the second half. That completed a season sweep of the series for Seattle, which won the three games between the teams by a combined 38 points.

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) Alyssa Thomas scored 20 points, Shekinna Stricklen added 16 and the Connecticut Sun won their franchise-record 12th straight home game, beating the Seattle Storm 81-67 on Sunday.

The Sun led 56-54 heading into the fourth quarter when Thomas scored the first four points to spark a 10-2 run that gave Connecticut a double-digit advantage. The Storm could only get within eight the rest of the way.

Connecticut (8-1) broke the franchise mark of 11 consecutive regular-season home victories set in 2004-05. The last loss at home was against Seattle on July 20. That doesn't include the playoff loss to Phoenix in the second round. Connecticut has won six straight overall.

Natasha Howard scored 20 points for Seattle (5-4).

              • Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six least experienced offensive lines, according to Phil Steele’s magazine:

                Navy— 23 returning starts

                Florida— 24

                Oklahoma— 24

                Colorado State— 26

                Tulsa— 27

                Rice, Cincinnati– 31

                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's Den: Some early notes for SEC college football……

                14) Vanderbilt— Vandy has new QB this year but grad transfer Neal started 23 games at Ball State. Commodores have won three straight over Tennessee for first time since 1926.

                13) Texas A&M— Jimbo Fisher is 6-2 in bowl games; Aggies scored 52-52 points in their last two bowls, are 8-1-1 vs spread in last 10 non-league games. A&M has only 4 starters back on defense.

                12) Tennessee— Volunteers haven’t gone bowling since 2016; they won last three bowls, scoring 42.7 ppg. Last two years, Vols are 3-11 vs spread at Neyland Stadium. Their offensive line is expected to be much better this year.

                11) South Carolina— Senior QB Bentley has already started 32 games; last two years. Gamecocks are 6-0 vs spread as a road dog. Carolina last four games with Georgia, by 32-14-14-24 points.

                10) Missouri— Clemson transfer Kelly Bryant takes over at QB for Drew Lock; under Odom, Mizzou is 10-7 vs spread as a HF. Former Tennessee coach Derek Dooley is the Tigers’ OC.

                9) Mississippi State— Last seven times Bulldogs were an underdog, the home team covered the spread; last two years, State is 8-3 vs spread as a home favorite. New QB for MSU this season.

-- Home teams are 22-21-2 ATS
                  -- The 'under' is 31-14

                  Team Betting Notes

-- Atlanta (1-5 SU, 1-5 ATS) continues to struggle without F Angel McCoughtry (knee), as they have dropped five in a row since opening with a victory against Dallas (1-5 SU, 3-3 ATS). The Wings returned the favor with a 71-61 victory against the Dream as 3 1/2-point underdogs at home on Saturday.

-- The Wings have hit the 'under' in all six of their games so far, as they're averaging just 68.0 points per game (PPG), ranking 11th in the WNBA. They're also 11th in field-goal percentage (37.6 percent), 11th in 3-point percentage (26.4 percent) and 10th in free-throw percentage (76.5 percent), too.

-- Chicago (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) stumbled out of the gate at 1-2 SU/ATS, but they have rattled off three consecutive victories. The improvement on the defensive end has been the biggest difference, as they allowed 90.3 PPG in the first three games, while yielding just 70.0 PPG over the past three.

-- Connecticut (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS) has posted five consecutive victories since their lone loss on May 31 in Los Angeles (4-3 SU, 3-3-1 ATS).

-- The Sparks have played just two home games in their seven outings, going 1-1 SU/ATS in their two games at home.

-- Indiana (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) has hit the 'under' in each of the past two games, their first consecutive games with an under result after opening with overs in five of their first six outings. Next up is a trip to visit the struggling Dream on June 19.

-- Minnesota (0-4 SU, 2-2 ATS) fired out of the box with a 3-0 SU mark, but they're 1-4 SU across the past five, and 0-5-1 ATS in the past six outings.

-- Las Vegas (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS) has posted back-to-back victories for the first time this season. While they're been a bit uneven against the spread, they're a friend of total bettors with the 'under' going 6-1 through the first seven games, including each of the past five.

-- New York (3-5 SU, 4-3-1 ATS) saw their mini two-game win streak come to a close, but they're still a solid 4-3-1 ATS across the first eight outings. They have also covered four of the past five outings after opening the season 0-2-1 ATS through the first three.

-- Phoenix (2-4 SU, 2-3-1 ATS) has gotten off to a rough and uncharacteristic slow start. In the two victories, the 'over' is 2-0, and in their four losses the 'under' is a perfect 4-0. They're 1-3 SU/ATS in four games on the road, and they'll likely be heavy favorites on June 20 in Dallas in their next road contest.

-- Seattle (5-4 SU, 5-4 ATS) picked up victories in consecutive games for the first time this season in Indiana and Washington, but Connecticut slapped them back to Earth in a 14-point loss on Sunday. The under is 7-2 through the first nine outings for the defending WNBA champs.

-- Washington (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) has ripped off five wins in the first seven outings, and they're 0-2 SU/ATS in two games against the Sun, and 5-0 SU/4-1 ATS in five games against everyone else. The 'under' is also 2-0 in their two outings against Connecticut, and 3-2 against the other five.

WNBA Lady Luck: June 18 free picks, predictions and betting odds

Candace Parker, a two-time WNBA MVP, averaged almost 18 points per game in 2018 and adds another weapon to a L.A. offense ranked third in scoring in the league, pouring in 81.1 points per game.

There’s only a single game on the WNBA betting odds board Tuesday but it so happens to feature the return of one of the league’s all-time greats, when the Washington Mystics visit the Los Angeles Sparks for a late 10:30 p.m. ET tipoff.

We size up tonight’s odds and give our best bets and WNBA predictions in our daily "Lady Luck".

Washington Mystics at Los Angeles Sparks (-3, 162.5)

One of the biggest stars of the WNBA returns to action Tuesday night. Los Angeles Sparks forward Candace Parker has been cleared to play after missing the start of the 2019 schedule with a hamstring injury.

Parker, a two-time WNBA MVP, averaged almost 18 points per game in 2018 and adds another weapon to a L.A. offense ranked third in scoring in the league, pouring in 81.1 points per game.

The 6-foot-4 Parker should also help improve the Sparks defense (even if she plays limited minutes), which has struggled in recent contests. Los Angeles is allowing an average of 85 points against on 42.9 percent shooting over the past four games, going 2-2 SU and ATS in those outings.

While L.A. brings back its top talent (and possibly Alana Beard, who is listed as questionable tonight), the Washington Mystics are missing some important role players. Emma Meesseman and Kim Mestdagh have been “suspended” by the team while they participate in the Women’s EuroBasket tournament for Belgium.

Meesseman was scoring 13.3 points per contest while Mestdagh was logging more than 16 minutes per game and scoring three points per outing off the bench. Washington has undoubtedly missed them, dropping their past two games without the duo and scoring just 71 and 75 points in defeats to Connecticut and Seattle.

Los Angeles, on the other hand, has played well without Parker and Beard to start the year. The Sparks are 4-3 and 3-3-1 ATS and getting terrific work from sisters Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike as well as guard Chelsea Gray. Take L.A. to cover the spread at home tonight.

                        PREDICTION: Los Angeles -3

                        Sunday’s picks: 2-0
                        Season to date: 18-9

                        • Mystics spoil Parker's return, rout Sparks
                          June 18, 2019

LOS ANGELES (AP) Ariel Atkins hit five 3-pointerss and scored 22 points Tuesday night to lead the Washington Mystics to an 81-52 win over Los Angeles, spoiling the return of former MVP Candace Parker to the Sparks' lineup.

Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had a career-high 17 points off the bench for the Mystics (5-3), who snapped a two-game losing streak in the first game of a four-game road trip. Kristi Toliver added 12 points and nine assists. Elena Delle Donne only made 4 of 12 shots and scored nine points for Washington but grabbed 15 rebounds.

Parker had three points on 1-of-9 shooting in 25 minutes after missing the first seven games because of a hamstring injury. Sydney Wiese and Nneka Ogwumike had 12 points apiece for the Sparks (4-4).

Parker played the first 7:43 and went 0-4 before checking out of the game with her team behind 20-3.

Atkins opened the game with a 3-pointer and after Chiney Ogwumike made a basket for the Sparks to make it 3-2, the Mystics reeled off 10-straight points. Neka Ogwumike made a free throw for Los Angeles at the 5:56 mark the Washington scored seven more and it was 20-3.

Washington led 24-10 after one quarter and 48-27 at the half, turning 14 L.A. turnovers into 23 points.

The Mystics finished 13 of 28 behind the arc while Los Angeles was 3 of 19 and had 26 turnovers. LaToya Sanders had a career-high six of Washington's 20 steals.

                              Quote of the Day
“We have two high-level competitors, Chris and James, who their only goal in life at this point is to win the title. They’ve accomplished everything else, they are both going to be first-ballot Hall of Famers. Two competitive superstars at that level, there’s going to be times when they are extremely competitive, extremely focused on how do we get to that next level, and when we don’t there’s going to be frustration,. I’m frustrated, our top players are frustrated, Mike D’Antoni is frustrated. We want to take the last step and be the champion and I think it’s good that there is tension in the sense that we all want to win.”
                              Rockets’ GM Daryl Morey

                              Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                              13) Washington’s best pitcher Max Scherzer broke his nose while working on his bunting during batting practice Tuesday night; he is supposed to pitch for the Nationals today, As I type this, it is unclear whether Scherzer is going to pitch or not.

Phillies-Nationals got rained out for second night in a row, so now Scherzer won’t have to pitch Wednesday so his nose can heal a little bit.

                              12) The resume of Toronto Raptors’ head coach Nick Nurse:
                              1989-90: Northern Iowa (assistant)
                              1990-91: Derby Rams (player/coach)
                              1991-93: Grand View
                              1993-95: South Dakota (assistant)
                              1995-97: Birmingham Bullets
                              1998: Telindus Oolinde
                              1998-200: Manchester Giants
                              2000-01: London Towers
                              2001: Oklahoma Storm (assistant)
                              2001-06: Brighton Bears
                              2005: Oklahoma Storm (assistant)
                              2007-11: Iowa Energy
                              2011-13: Rio Grande Valley Vipers
                              2013-18: Toronto Raptors (assistant)
                              2018-19: Toronto Raptors (head coach)

The man has paid his dues.

                              11) Josh McCown threw passes for seven different NFL teams in his 17-year career, going 23-53 as a starter; he retired this week, but should have an excellent career, either as a coach or on TV- he also signed with ESPN this week.

Only six other QB’s have thrown a pass for seven NFL teams; this fall, Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to become the first QB to throw a pass for eight NFL teams.

Playing QB in the NFL is profitable, even if you’re a backup; McCown earned $49,668,000 in his playing career, pretty good cash for a guy who won 23 games in 17 years.

                              10) Zion Williamson and Lonzo Ball figure to be teammates with the Pelicans next season; it was July 2017 that I saw Zion’s AAU team play Lavar Ball’s team at an adidas tournament in Las Vegas. Lonzo was sitting in the front row, watching his younger brother play.

That was the night there were so many people in the Cashman Center, when Lebron James pulled up to watch the games, the Las Vegas police told him that he could go in the building, but they couldn’t guarantee his safety in there, so Lebron left.

                              9) Toronto Raptors had their championship parade Monday; thousands of people jammed the streets to celebrate Canada’s first NBA championship. It was estimated that 2,000,000 people jammed the parade route.

                              8) US Open golf champion Gary Woodland originally went to Division II Washburn on a basketball scholarship, but transferred to Kansas after his freshman year and got a golf scholarship from the Jayhawks.

                              7) Angels DFA’d Cesar Puello this week; the guy hit .390 in 12 games (50 PA) and he got freakin’ DFA’d. Hopefully someone will trade for him or pick him up when he becomes a free agent. He is only 28 years old.

                              6) College basketball transfer portal:
                              — Derryck Thornton bolts from USC to Boston College; he had previously played for Duke. If kids could transfer during a TV timeout, he would be a strong candidate to do it.

                              5) San Francisco Giants are struggling at 31-39, but they’re 17-6 in one-run games, 14-33 in all their other games. In other words, they could be a whole lot worse than 31-39.

                              4) Last night, my TV informed me that the batteries were low in my remote control. No idea how my TV knew that, but I paid attention and changed the batteries. Thanks, TV!!!

                              3) Bellarmine College in Louisville is going D-I in basketball, starting in 2020-21; the Knights will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

                              2) It must be fun to be a good player in the NBA:
                              — Al Horford turned down his $30.1M option from the Celtics.
                              — Harrison Barnes turned down his $25.1M option from the Kings.

Can you imagine turning down that kind of money? I’d be afraid to walk across the street until I signed a new contract. Guys dislike playing on a team so much that they turn down $25M to go elsewhere. Wow.

                              1) There is a photographer named Tom Fox who was in Dallas Monday to cover a trial; when he got to the courthouse, he saw a gunman and the gunman saw him and the police/gunmen wound up in a shootout, with bullets flying over the photographer’s head (he was hiding behind a column). Mercifully, he didn’t get hit.

The photographer got a great picture of the gunman, the gunman wound up getting killed. Sad way to start the week; imagine having the onions to snap a picture of a guy with an assault rifle who can see you and isn’t that far away? Amazing.

Indiana Fever at Atlanta Dream (-1.5, 146.5)

It’s an early work day for these WNBA teams. The Fever limp into Wednesday having lost three of their last four, with the lone victory coming against the lowly Dallas Wings. To make matters worse, those three losses came at home.

Indiana could be without starting center Natalie Achonwa Wednesday, as she’s listed as doubtful due to a calf strain. Achonwa is averaging 11.6 points and grabbing 5.4 rebounds per game so far in 2019 and coming off a 15-point performance in the defeat to Chicago last weekend. The Fever have been terribly inconsistent on offense to begin with, and run one of the slower paces in the WNBA at 93.15.

Atlanta sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 1-5 SU mark and ranks dead last in scoring, putting up just 67.7 points per contest. The Dream have cracked the 70-point mark just once in their last four games, playing below the total in three of those four outings.

With Indiana missing a significant scorer and Atlanta’s offensive atrophy, we’re calling for a low-scoring snorer this early in the day.

                                PREDICTION: Under 146.5

Chicago Sky at New York Liberty (-2, 165)

The Sky are one of the hottest teams in the WNBA, stringing together three wins in a row – and more importantly, covering the WNBA pointspreads in that span.

Chicago has come out swinging, leading the league in first-quarter points with an average of 23.1 in the opening frame. That's helped the Sky account for 41.2 first-half points on the year. Defensively, Chicago is allowing an average of 42.2 points against in the first 20 minutes of action but has significantly slimmed that down to 34.7 during this three-game winning streak.

New York, on the other hand, is giving up 20.5 points in the first quarter on the season, including a 35-point smack from Las Vegas in the first 10 minutes this past weekend. They've countered that with only 17.6 points of offense in the opening stanza. As for first-half production, the Liberty are putting up 38.4 points per outing but giving up 43.9 points against - worst in the WNBA.

The Liberty have been playing well, especially considering their slow start to the year, having gone 3-1 SU and ATS in their last four outings. However, Chicago is really finding its footing, most notably on the defensive end. The Sky have limited foes to 78.4 points per game over their last five (4-1 SU/ATS) while holding those opponents to 40.5 percent shooting.

                                PREDICTION: Chicago first-half +1

                                Tuesday’s picks: 0-1
                                Season to date: 18-10
