      Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

      13) Surprised to hear that the Oakland Raiders will be featured this summer on Hard Knocks; figured that they would wait until next year to feature the Raiders, when they move to Las Vegas.

      12) Mets had two men on, no one out Tuesday with Jeff McNeil up; Bronx plays the 3B in for a bunt, and Mets’ TV guy Gary Cohen exclaims, “They’re playing in for a bunt!!! Doesn’t anyone scout?!?!?!”

Words aren’t out of his mouth and McNeil homers to right-center. I’m guessing Bronx coaches and staff won’t be too thrilled when they hear about Cohen’s comments- they are in first place after all, while the Mets are………the Mets.

      11) There were 13 homers in the Arizona-Philly game Monday night, which is a major league record for one game.

      10) Interesting to follow Twitter late Monday night and Tuesday with reaction to Kevin Durant’s injury; lot of people suddenly became medical experts.

Without knowing the inner workings of the Warriors, am guessing the decision comes down to Durant and the Warriors’ trainer, with Durant having the final say.

What follows now really could alter the NBA’s entire offseason; what teams will throw major $$$ at a big star with a very serious leg injury? Will he get a shorter deal and have to prove himself healthy before he breaks the bank again?

      9) With Game 6 in Oakland Thursday, it bears repeating that Toronto had a 6-point lead and the ball with 3:00 left Monday with a chance to win its first title, but lost at home.

Crowd will be fired up for Game 6, the last NBA game ever in Oakland— the Warriors have a new arena for next year, across the bay in San Francisco.

      8) Royals-Tigers are playing a game in Omaha, Nebraska Thursday, in advance of the College World Series. Teams played Tuesday-Wednesday in Kansas City.

      7) Baseball stuff:
      — Giancarlo Stanton homered (was 2-4) in a Class A rehab game.
      — Orioles’ P Alex Cobb (hip) is out for the year.
      — Tigers’ SS Niko Goodrum left Tuesday’s game (bruised knee).

      6) Memphis Grizzlies hired Taylor Jenkins as their new head coach; he was Mike Budenholzer’s assistant in Milwaukee this season and in Atlanta for five years. Jenkins will the Grizzlies’ 4th coach in the last five years.

      5) Saints signed DE Cam Jordan to a 3-year contract extension that is worth $52.5M with a maximum of $55.5M that includes $42M in guarantees.

      4) FOX Sports produced its US Open promo, but didn’t include the person who won the last two US Opens, which was surprising to Brooks Koepka, who won the last two US Opens.

“We’re amazed that I wasn’t in it, just kind of shocked. Somebody probably got fired over it … or should.”

      3) Most home runs, first 67 games of a career in Major League history:
      1. Jose Abreu, 25 (2014), 2. Cody Bellinger, 24 (2017) 5. Pete Alonso, 22 (2019)

      2) Detroit Tigers have Jack Morris as a TV analyst this year and he is very good, especially when he talks about pitching. Very honest; I learn something every game.

      1) Zack Greinke has thrown 89 pitches this season that were under 70 MPH, 25 more than any other pitcher in the major leagues.

            • Liberty top Lynx as home underdog
              June 12, 2019

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) Kia Nurse and Asia Durr provided the offensive spark to help the New York Liberty beat the Minnesota Lynx 75-69 on Wednesday night.

Nurse scored 26 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, and Durr added a career-high 20.

''Total team effort with a balanced scoring effort and getting key stops defensively allowed us to get the win,'' Nurse said. ''We're continuing to find ways to win, playing with a lot of passion and that will allow you to go far in this league. We just need to continue to close it out.''

New York had a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter that Minnesota whittled down to 61-58 before Nurse hit a 3-pointer. That sparked a 10-4 run and made it 71-62. The Lynx rallied within four, but Durr made a spectacular move, splitting two defenders and scoring with 20 seconds left to seal the win.

''I was just trying to make a play. The shot clock was going down,'' Durr said. ''I didn't want to turn the ball over. Make a move and try to score.''

The No. 2 pick in the draft said she was hearing from coach Katie Smith to shoot the ball more and she did.

Sylvia Fowles had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Minnesota (4-3), which has dropped three of its last four games. Fowles was happy that the team was able to rally from a 15-point deficit in the first half, but the team still needs to work on its end-game.

''Coming back is part of the game,'' Fowles said. ''Finishing and doing what we need to do is something different and we're not executing right now.''

The win was the second straight for New York, which had a 17-game losing streak before Sunday's victory over Las Vegas.

New York used a 14-2 run spanning the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter to turn a 9-8 lead into a 13-point advantage. Durr was a big part of that spurt as the rookie surpassed her previous career-high of 12 points before halftime. She finished the opening 20 minutes with 14 points as New York led 38-28 at the break.

SOLID DEFENSE: Amanda Zahui B. had another strong defensive effort for the Liberty with two blocks and two steals to go along with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

''What she's been able to do on the defensive end, having the energy, she's been the glue for us this year,'' said Tina Charles of her teammate.

MILESTONES: Fowles moved into the top 20 on the WNBA career scoring list, passing Taj McWilliams-Franklin in the first quarter for 20th. The Lynx star has 5,025 points.

CHINESE CONNECTION: Wednesday night marked the first time in WNBA history that two Chinese players competed against each other in a regular-season game. New York's Han Xu and Minnesota's Shao Ting chatted before the game. Han was drafted 14th by New York this year while Shao was signed as a free agent in April. The pair played together for China on the national team that finished sixth at the FIBA World Cup last fall. The pair didn't get on the court.

TRAINING ROOM: Liberty forward Rebecca Allen broke the third metacarpal bone in her right hand in practice on Tuesday. She's out at least three weeks. Allen was wearing a soft cast. ... Minnesota guard Seimone Augustus traveled with the team and is still recovering from arthroscopic surgery on her right knee on May 30. She's out indefinitely. She was charged with a technical foul from the bench early in the fourth quarter. ... Lynx rookie Jessica Shepard wasn't with the team after tearing the ACL in her right knee. She will miss the remainder of the season and have surgery once the swelling on the knee goes down.

              UP NEXT:

Lynx: Host Connecticut on Friday night.

Liberty: At Las Vegas on Friday night to begin a two-game trip.

                  **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                  13) Why does there always have to be someone to blame? People today always need someone to blame when something bad happens.

Kevin Durant got hurt Monday night; all I see on Twitter is “Whose fault is it?”

The Warriors trainer? Their GM? Durant? His agent? Russell Westbrook?

Sometimes stuff just happens, then people have to react/adjust to it. This was no one’s fault.

                  12) Durant already had his injured achilles tendon operated on; that was quick.

                  11) Of the top 100 top-rated TV programs of 2018, 64 were NFL games.

                  10) Tuesday night was the first time the Pittsburgh Pirates allowed four home runs in an inning since 1956, when the New York Giants did it, with a young Willie Mays hitting one of them.

                  9) This week at Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, a gambler bet $44,000 that Phil Mickelson won’t finish in the top 5 at the US Open at Pebble Beach; if he wins his bet, he banks $4,000.

                  8) Reds opened the first inning Wednesday with back/back homers (Senzel/Votto), first time they did that since 2001, when Alex Ochoa/Barry Larkin did it.

                  7) Baseball stuff:
                  — Padres sent P Chris Paddack to Class A ball, just to rein in his innings.
                  — Arizona put P Jon Duplantier (shoulder) on IL.
                  — Marlins put P Jose Urena (back) on IL.

                  6) Something you don’t see much anymore; a defensive tackle on the Baltimore Ravens was so out of shape at minicamp that the team set him home, basically after stretching exercises. With so much money at stake nowadays, players get tend to stay in shape year-round.

                  5) Tennessee Titans will retire Steve McNair’s #9 and Eddie George’s #27 this fall; McNair’s #9 will be the first #9 ever retired by an NFL team.

                  4) Back in January, the St Louis Blues were having a bad season and fired their coach; a gambler in Las Vegas wagered $400 on them to win the Stanley Cup, at 250-1 odds. Probably seemed like throwing money away to most, but today the guy cashes a ticket worth $100,000.

                  3) Braves 8, Braves 7 (11)— Game ended around 12:30 am; teams have a 12:10 first pitch today, so lot of people better sleep fast.

                  2) Brewers 6, Astros (14)— Mike Moustakas hit the deciding home run in the 14th inning. Milwaukee batters walked once, struck out 24 times in this game, and still won.

                  1) Wednesday night, a person paid $69,287.21 each on the Warriors’ website for two courtside seats (total: $138,574.42) for Game 6 of the NBA Finals.

Someone should tell this person that the games are on TV.

                    • Preview: Fever (3-3) at Wings (0-4)
                      Date: June 13, 2019 8:00 PM EDT

Still waiting on their best player to return, the winless Dallas Wings could also be without their top rookie Thursday night when they open a three-game homestand versus the Indiana Fever.

All-Star guard Skylar Diggins has yet to play for the Wings (0-4) after giving birth to a boy in April, and the team is letting her work her way back into playing shape at a pace comfortable to her. Dallas has struggled transitioning without both Diggins and the since-traded Liz Cambage, with close losses in its first two games followed by blowout defeats on the road.

The most recent one occurred Sunday in the nation's capital, where the Wings were overwhelmed in the final three quarters of their 86-62 loss to the Washington Mystics. Dallas led 20-15 after a quarter but lost Arike Ogunbowale to a sprained ankle in the second quarter, and the Wings were outscored 71-42 in the final three periods.

Ogunbowale, who is listed as day-to-day, had started two of the first four games and is averaging 7.3 points and 2.5 rebounds in 18.5 minutes per game.

"Her response made it look like it was more serious than it really was, but again it's like anybody going through a first-time experience, 'Oh, I've never felt like this before. What is this?'" Wings coach Brian Agler told the Dallas Morning News. "When you've played basketball and you've turned your ankle several times, you know how bad it is, but it being the first time, I don't think she realized it."

One of Dallas' losses was a 79-64 loss at Indiana on Friday in which the Wings never recovered from a 10-point deficit after one quarter.

That win, though, was Indiana's last victory as it settled for a split of its four-game homestand with back-to-back losses to Phoenix and reigning champion Seattle. The Fever (3-3) absorbed an 84-82 loss to the Storm on Tuesday night, wasting a rally from an 11-point second-half deficit.

"Those first 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 possessions of the third quarterâ?¦ that's something you have to correct," Fever coach Pokey Chatman said after watching her team fail to gain traction in that period. "You can't talk about a valiant effort when you come back with the 'L.'"

Natalie Achonwa put Indiana ahead with a free throw with 29 seconds to play, but she was whistled for a blocking foul on Jewell Lloyd with 24.4 seconds left. Loyd sank both free throws, and both Kelsey Mitchell and Candice Dupree missed potential go-ahead and game-tying shots around a foul shot for the final margin.

Mitchell finished with 21 points while Achonwa added 17 for Indiana, which placed five players in double figures. This game kicks off a stretch of seven in nine on the road for the Fever, who have held only one opponent under 77 points.

Dallas, though, could be in line to become the second since it is averaging a league-worst 66.3 points and is second-to-last in shooting at 38.1 percent.

                          June 13, 2019

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) Candice Dupree scored 20 points to help the Indiana Fever beat the winless Dallas Wings 76-72 on Thursday night.

Kelsey Mitchell added 18 points for Indiana (4-3). The Fever also beat the Wings on Friday night in Indianapolis

Kayla Thornton led the short-handed Wings (0-5) with 19 points.

All-Star guard Skylar Diggins has yet to play for the Wings after giving birth to a boy in April, and rookie Arike Ogunbowale missed the game because of a sprained ankle.

The Wings re-signed AP college player of the year Megan Gustafson earlier Thursday. The former Iowa center was drafted 17th by the Wings, but was one of the final cuts from the roster before the season started. She was in uniform, but didn't play.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

                              13) Raptors 114, Warriors 110— Toronto wins its first NBA title; Siakam/Lowry both had 26 points. Raptors went 6-2 vs Golden State this season, counting regular season games.

Golden State won only five of 24 quarters in this series. Klay Thompson scored 30 points in 32:00, but he hurt his left knee and left the arena on crutches- he tore his ACL.

                              12) People on Twitter Thursday were getting excited, one way or the other, because the Warriors were 3-5 this season in games Marc Davis officiates; Raptors were 9-0. Now it is 3-6 and 10-0.

There are three officials for every game; doubtful one guy makes that big a difference. There are always going to be stats like that; how relevant they are is debatable.

                              11) You can actually bet on which player scores the first basket of the night; Kyle Lowry (9-1) was the winner in this game.

                              10) Best I can tell, 2006 is last time the NHL/NBA both had first-time champs in same season; Miami Heat, Carolina Hurricanes won titles that spring.

                              9) Angels 5, Rays 3— They had a power outage at the Trop during this game.

Albert Pujols became the 6th player ever to hit 200+ homers for two different teams. Shohei Ohtani hit for the cycle.

                              8) Former Texans’ GM Brian Gaine was accused of discriminating against African-Americans in a complaint that was recently filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which may help explain the odd timing of his recent firing.

A former security coordinator for the Texans made the accusation, after he was let go by the team on May 8. Gaine was fired on June 7.

                              7) Baseball stuff:
                              — New York (A) put 1B Kendrys Morales (calf) on the IL.
                              — Tampa Bay put 3B Christian Arroyo (forearm) on the IL.
                              — Cubs put P Carl Edwards Jr (thoractic strain) on the IL.

                              6) Royals 7, Tigers 2— Game was played in Omaha, to kick off the College World Series; nine players in this game, plus Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire, played in the CWS in their college days. Omaha is where the Royals’ AAA team plays.

This was the first major league game ever played in Nebraska; let the record show that KC’s Cheslor Cuthbert is the first player in MLB history to get a hit in a game in Nebraska.

                              5) Former St Joe’s basketball coach Phil Martelli will be making $450,000 a season to be an assistant coach at Michigan the next two years.

                              4) Sounds like Zion Williamson will fit into the NBA just fine; he signed a marketing deal with Prime Sports back in April but terminated the agreement on May 31, three weeks before he is even drafted into the league. NBA has more drama off the court than on it.

                              3) Apparently, Thursday was Walmart’s 40th birthday; how do I know this? Kept getting text messages from them Thursday telling me this, and I rarely shop there.

                              2) Detroit’s prize pitching prospect, Casey Mize was pulled from a minor league game after 23 pitches in the third inning Thursday; he left with the trainer with an undisclosed injury.

                              1) John Calipari parlayed his dalliance with UCLA into a 10-year deal with his current team (Kentucky) that is worth $86M. It has some unusual pieces to it.

Starting with the sixth year of the contract, Calipari has the option to step down as coach and become “special assistant to the athletics director/university representative,” a title that receives $950,000 per year, as opposed to the $9M a year he makes to coach. Calipari is 60 right now; he figures to end his career with the Wildcats.
