    • Saturday’s 6-pack

      — Dolphins traded QB Ryan Tannehill to Tennessee, so they’re obviously trading for a QB, probably either Josh Rosen or a draft pick to take Kyler Murray.

      — New Jersey Giants are going to sign WR Golden Tate, helping fill a big hole.

      — Browns’ RB Kareem Hunt got suspended eight games by the NFL.

      — Raiders will now play the 2019 season in Oakland.

      — Nationals’ OF Michael Taylor is out for while with a sprained knee, hip.

      — Utah Jazz G Dante Exum partially tore the patellar tendon in his right knee, is sidelined indefinitely.

      Tweet of the Day
“The fact that he wanted to throw me out in a spring training game is pretty ridiculous. He’s known for overreaction a little bit.”
Astros’ manager AJ Hinch, after Angel Hernandez threw him out of a spring training game

      Saturday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a frenetic Friday…..

      13) Duke 74, North Carolina 73— Tar Heels were 4-27 on the arc, and lost by a point.

      12) Seton Hall 81, Marquette 79— Three players were ejected after a pushing/shoving thing early in second half. Seton Hall player also got a technical with 1:58 left; for the game, Pirates were 26-44 on foul line, Marquette 29-41. Tough game to officiate; very physical.

Markus Howard was shooting 90.7% on the foul line before this game; he was 18-24 here, and was 1-15 from the floor.

All in all, seven players either fouled out or were ejected.

      11) Southern Miss basketball coach Doc Sadler coaches in sweats, which is a good thing, just a much different thing than most college coaches. I’m sitting on my couch Friday watching his team play, having lunch I bought at Wendy’s and I’m dressed better than he is, and I don’t dress well. Go figure.

      10) Memphis 79, UCF 55— Its good to play the conference tournament on your home court. Tigers host top-seeded Houston today. Bubble teams are rooting for Houston.

      9) Former NFL QB JP Losman is 38 now and is an assistant coach at Clemson; he threw the ball so well at the school’s Pro Day, throwing to WR’s/DB’s, that an NFL team asked Losman if he was interested in coming back to the NFL. Losman hasn’t played in the league since 2011- he declined.

      8) Rhode Island 75, VCU 70— #1-seed goes down in the A-14; VCU’s best player Marcus Evans got hurt while VCU had a decent lead in the first half- they went in the dumper after that.

      7) There was a clip on Twitter Friday of Rockies’ 3B Nolan Arenado shooting hoops outside Colorado’s spring training facility, and his teammates react when he makes a couple of 3-pointers in a row, but the unusual thing is, Arenado shoots the ball left-handed. He plays baseball right-handed.

      6) One of my favorite NBA players to watch is Montrezl Harrell of the Clippers; he works so hard, gives great effort. In four years in the NBA, he’s worked his way up from 3.6 ppg three years ago to 16.2 ppg this year. Not the most skilled player, but he works his butt off, and lot of time, great effort means more than skill.

Another player like that is Steven Adams of the Thunder; its fun to watch guys play hard.

      5) Detroit Tigers met with Players’ Union reps this week, but they insisted on having the meeting outside on a ballfield, instead of in the clubhouse. Players are apparently concerned that their clubhouse would be bugged for the meeting. Not a lot of trust for the front office there.

      4) In case you were wondering (you weren’t), Jerry Blevins had 20 appearances LY where he faced only one batter, most in the major leagues. MLB-wide, only seven relievers had 15+ one-batter appearances.

      3) Winner of the Home Run Derby gets $1 million now? No pressure on the guy who is throwing the pitches. Hopefully the pitcher will get at least 10% of the winner’s share.

      2) Coaching carousel:
      — George Washington fired coach Maurice Joseph.
      — Appalachian State fired coach Jim Fox.
      — Texas A&M fired Billy Kennedy; he was in Sweet 16 two years ago.
      — UNLV fired Marvin Menzies; he really didn’t get a fair shake there. He inherited two players his first year, and this year, his 3rd year, their best player got hurt and didn’t play.

      1) I respect the job ESPN’s Joe Lunardi does with Bracketology, but I try not to look at it that often, because he isn’t the committee. We’ll find out the brackets Sunday night. Until then, just need to sort out all the teams that are earning their way into the tournament.

No. 5 Iowa State vs. No. 3 Kansas (CBS, 6:00 p.m. ET)
The top two seeds in the Big 12 tournament won't be playing for the automatic bid to the Big Dance as Kansas State and Texas Tech have been bounced. Much was made about Big 12 king Kansas not winning the regular season conference title for the first time since 2004, but it's the Jayhawks who have an opportunity to grab the crown with a win over Iowa State. Kansas knocked out 10th-seed West Virginia in Friday's semifinals to reach the title game for the third time in four seasons, while hooking up with Iowa State in the tournament championship for the first time since 2015.

The Cyclones held off top-seed Kansas State in the semifinals, 63-59 to pick up their second victory over the Wildcats this season. Iowa State split the season series with Kansas as the home team won each time. The Cyclones crushed the Jayhawks in Ames, 77-60 as 2.5-point favorites in early January, while KU grabbed revenge in Lawrence less than three weeks later, 80-76. ISU will look to keep up an incredible 12-0-1 ATS mark in the last 13 conference tournament matchups.

        No. 3 Seton Hall vs. No. 1 Villanova (FS1, 6:30 p.m. ET)
For the second time in seven days, the Wildcats and Pirates hook up as they battle for the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Villanova is in regardless of what happens tonight, while Seton Hall has helped its tournament chances over the last 10 days by winning four straight games. The most recent victory came against Marquette on Friday, 81-79 as 4.5-point underdogs in the semifinals as the Pirates picked up their second crucial win over the Golden Eagles this month.

Villanova rallied to stun Xavier in overtime, 71-67, although the Wildcats failed to cash as six-point favorites on Friday. The Wildcats trailed for most of the game before forcing overtime to reach their fifth consecutive Big East title game. In the previous matchup between these squads last Saturday in Newark, Seton Hall downed Villanova, 79-75, as the Pirates avenged a 28-point loss to the Wildcats earlier in the season. The last team other than Villanova to capture the Big East tournament title was Seton Hall, who edged the Wildcats, 69-67 in 2016.

No. 8 Florida vs. No. 5 Auburn (ESPN, 1 p.m. ET)
The Gators looked like they were headed for a nervous Selection Sunday when a six-point possession ensued late in the second half as LSU interim head coach Tony Benford picked up an ill-timed technical foul to compound the Tigers' issues. Eventually, freshman point guard Andrew Nembhard secured the Florida upset with an immense 3-pointer wiht just over a second remaining. Freshman Keyontae Johnson continued his tourney coming-out party by delivering the winning assist to finish off a strong final few minutes. Nembhard stole the show with a career-high 20 points, six assists and no turnovers, but will now have to deal with Auburn's pesky senior floor general, Jared Harper, who helped the Tigers post a 76-62 home win on Feb. 5. This will be the Gators' first SEC Tournament semifinal appearance in five years, the furthest head coach Mike White has taken them since replacing Billy Donovan

The Tigers faced a little adversity against the Gamecocks, trailing early before gaining some separation in the second half and ultimately covering by knocking down the majority of their free-throws down the stretch. Chuma Okeke again looked bothered by a foot injury and didn't score his first field goal until he finished off an alley oop in the closing minutes. Harper recovered from a shaky quarterfinal effort by scoring 19 of his 27 points in the second half to help the Tigers improve to 6-0 this month. Senior backcourt make Bryce Brown added 19 points and has been excellent in Nashville. 7-foot center Austin Wiley, who has been sidelined since Feb. 23 with a slower leg injury, provided limited minutes against the Gamecocks in his return to the lineup and is expected to be available for this one This is Auburn's first SEC Tourney semifinal since 2015.

No. 3 Tennessee vs. No. 2 Kentucky (ESPN, 3:30 p.m. ET)
The Vols took care of business against Mississippi State, getting a ridiculous dunk from Admiral Schofield to punctuate an impressive win over the NCAA-bound Bulldogs. Afterward, he was trending on Twitter over the jam and the fact he went on SEC Network and said the Vols don't feel like Kentucky respects them as an opponent. The rubber match will present an opportunity to move on to the championship game and likely lock up a No. 1 seed in the NCAAs. Tennessee is playing extremely well after Schofield, Kyle Alexander, Jordan Bone and Lamonte Turner all stepped up in support of SEC Player of the Year Grant Williams to pull away and gain separation in a contest that was tied in the second half. The Vols routed Kentucky in Knoxville 71-52 to open March after being blown out in Lexington in February.

An active 'Cats defense made quick work of the Crimson Tide, helping dominate the action and setting up easy offense. Although this game will be played in Nashville, Kentucky fans have again taken over the SEC Tournament, creating an interesting dynamic for this one. The Wildcats held the Vols to 40 percent shooting in their win and were stifled in the loss, shooting just 31.8 percent. They held Alabama to a shooting clip of just over 30 percent in Friday's rout. Reid Travis had eight points, seven boards and three blocks in his return to the lineup, so we'll see how his knee is feeling playing on consecutive days after putting in 23 minutes. P.J. Washington has been the leader of this young UK group and has held his own against Williams and the highly touted Tennessee frontcourt. He must against be at his best if the Wildcats are to suit up on Sunday.

No. 4 Florida State vs. No. 3 Duke (ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET)
One of the hottest teams in the country is a squad that was one victory away from the Final Four last March. Florida State overcame a pair of ugly road losses at Pittsburgh and Boston College to win 13 of their past 14 games, including an overtime triumph over Virginia Tech in the ACC quarterfinal and a 10-point victory to bounce top-seed Virginia in the semifinal. FSU has allowed 64 points or less in five of the past six contests, while improving to 5-1 ATS in the last six opportunities in the underdog role.

Duke held off rival North Carolina in the semifinal, 74-73 to beat the Tar Heels for the first time in three tries this season. The Blue Devils failed to cash as 4.5-point favorites to fall to 2-8 ATS the last 10 games. In the first matchup this season in Tallahassee, the Blue Devils edged the Seminoles with a last-second three-pointer, 80-78 to pick up their seventh win in the last eight matchups since 2013. Duke is seeking its second ACC tournament championship since 2012, while Florida State won its only ACC title in 2012 by beating North Carolina, 85-82.

        Overall: 26-6 SU, 22-10 ATS
        Totals: 14-18 O/U

No. 4 Wisconsin vs. No. 1 Michigan State (CBS, 1 p.m. ET)
D'Mitrik Trice drained a huge late 3-pointer to help the Badgers outlast another great effort from the 'Huskers, allowing the Badgers to survive a dreadful game from top player Ethan Happ, who had just four points and seven turnovers and sat the bench as his teammates helped seal their passage to this semifinal. This matchup with the Spartans is more up his alley, but it remains to be seen if he can leave his struggles behind and overcome being a liability at the free-throw line. Happ had 20 points and 12 boards in Wisconsin's 67-59 home loss to the Spartans in the lone regular-season meeting between these teams, but missed all six of his free-throw attempts. Trice, the younger brother of former Michigan state standout Travis Trice, joins guards Brad Davison and Khalil Iverson along the perimeter and must supply the scoring for Wisconsin to pull this upset. He shot just 1-for-6 from the field in the first game against his big brother's alma mater.

Nick Ward returned from a five-game absence after a hand injury and looked sharp. He's playing with a wrap but should be fine for this one if his conditioning holds up as he looks to duel with Happ inside. Cassius Winston isn't likely to leave the floor much here as Tom Izzo watched a 21-point lead with four minutes to go trimmed to five points as his starters left the floor against Ohio State. Izzo won his 600th game on Friday and got solid games from Foster Loyer and Kenny Goins as x-factors against the Buckeyes. Loyer played only one minute in Madison. Winston had 22 points, six rebounds and six assists in the win over Wisconsin and was named Big Ten Player of the Year earlier this week. His form suggests he's looking to add more hardware to his collection.

        Totals: 13-19 O/U

No. 7 Minnesota vs. No. 3 Michigan (CBS, 3:30 p.m. ET)
Considering the Gophers were sweating their NCAA Tournament inclusion when they arrived in Chicago, finding themselves in this one should have them breathing easier. Will that affect their killer instinct here? Amir Coffey and Jordan Murphy combined for 48 points to help upset Purdue and have been excellent down the stretch, but Richard Pitino is basically playing five guys and must sprinkle in a few more bodies to ensure his guys have something left in the tank if this is tight in the closing minutes. Freshman center Daniel Oturu had 13 points and 10 boards against the Boilers and needs to avoid foul trouble to stay on the floor. Dupree McBrayer, who was tremendous in the opener, missed all four of his shots on Friday. .

The Wolverines dominated Iowa in bouncing back from their regular-season loss to Michigan State, welcoming Charles Matthews back to the mix. They set a Big Ten record with their ninth consecutive win in this event as they look for a third straight title. Michigan shot the ball extremely well and clamped down defensively, making them a heavy favorite here against a Minnesota team it has already beaten twice. The Wolverines won 59-57 and 69-60 and have gotten better over the past few weeks with point guard Zavier Simpson getting everyone comfortable and taking control of games more efficiently. Iggy Brazdeikis and Jordan Poole have stepped up with Matthews out and continue to respond.

                        • Sunday’s 6-pack

Some trends to consider when filling out your brackets:

                          — Six of last nine Final Fours had only one #1 seed in it.

                          — That said, last four national games had six #1 seeds, a 2-seed and a 3-seed.

                          — Last time a #4-seed made the Final Four; 2013.

                          — Five of last six years, a team seeded #7 or worse made the Final Four.

                          — Since 2002, #2-seeds are 64-4 SU in first round; last six years, #3-seeds are 19-5.

                          — Last two years, Big East teams are only 7-6 in the first round.

                          Quote of the Day
“We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to Alliance of American Football, which we’ve always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers. We completed extensive background work to determine whether it would be appropriate for Johnny to play this season, and after consulting with many people familiar with his situation, we concluded that it would be good for him to resume his pro football career here at The Alliance.”

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                          13) I’m watching the Seton Hall-Marquette game Friday night, and it dawned on me; half the league has to travel halfway cross the country for the conference tournament every year, while the other half of the league? Their fans can drive or take the train to Madison Square Garden.

This is the sixth year of the “new” Big East; during that time, the midwestern part of the league is 8-19 SU against the eastern part in the conference tournament.

Creighton lost in finals of the tournament twice, Xavier once, but no midwestern team has won it, and this year is no different. Something to think about going forward.

                          12) Houston 61, Memphis 58— This is going to be the last year in the foreseeable future where Memphis won’t go to the NCAA’s; Penny Hardaway did a good job in his first season, and he is crushing it on the recruiting trail. Memphis has a lot of high school talent.

                          11) Tennessee 82, Kentucky 78— This is Wildcats’ first loss in SEC tourney since a 61-60 loss to Florida in the finals of the 2014 tournament. Tennessee plays Sunday for its first tournament title since 1979.

Both of these teams are really good and either could win the NCAA title.

Sometimes it is better to lose in the semi-final of the tourneys that play their final on Sunday; one thing you do NOT want is to play on Sunday, then draw a Thursday game in the NCAA’s, especially if it is Thursday afternoon— not lot of prep time.

                          10) Michigan 76, Minnesota 49— Wolverines got swept by rival Michigan State this season; now the teams meet a third time, for the Big 14 title.

                          9) Utah State 64, San Diego State 57— You could make a legit argument for Chris Smith to be national Coach of the Year. Last three years, Aggies were 22-32 in Big West games; this year, in his first season in Logan, Utah State is 27-6, 18-3 in conference.

                          8) Iowa State 78, Kansas 66— Cyclones won Big X tournament for 4th time in last six years; this year, they came into the tournament on a 2-6 skid, but they seem to like Kansas City.

                          7) Villanova 74, Seton Hall 72— Wildcats win Big East tournament for fourth time in last five years. For the season, 54% of Villanova’s shots were 3-pointers; thats unusual for a good team.

                          6) Oregon 68, Washington 48— Huskies laid an egg here; they scored two points in first 9:30 of second half. Washington is 5-4 in its last nine games, after starting season 19-4.

                          5) Chargers signed QB Tyrod Taylor this week, an excellent signing by a team in desperate need of a backup for aging Philip Rivers, who will be 38 in December. Last year’s Chargers’ backup QB’s were Geno Smith and Cardale Jones; Taylor is a huge upgrade from those two.

                          4) Cleveland Browns’ QB Baker Mayfield took batting practice and then coached first base for the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday. Apparently Mayfield is buddies with Christian Yelich; he hit a foul ball into the stands that broke a woman’s watch.

                          3) Pittsburgh Pirates honored TV analyst Steve Blass this weekend in Florida, naming the press box in Bradenton after him. Blass has been on TV for the Pirates for the last 34 years- he also pitched for the Pirates for a decade, helping them win the 1971 World Series.

in 2009, Blass recorded two hole-in-ones in the same round of golf, a pretty cool feat.

                          2) During that same game, Pirates’ TV guys were insisting that Starling Marte has as much talent as Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, an interesting claim.

                          1) Way back in 1963, the San Francisco Giants had three Alou brothers on their team: Matty, Felipe and Jesus. All three could hit;
                          — Matty wound up with a .307 career batting average over 15 years,
                          — Felipe wound up being a manager, winning more games than he lost over 14 years.
                          — Jesus hit .280 in 15 major league seasons, winning two World Series rings with the A’s.

This year, Vermont has three brothers on its team this year; the Duncans- Ernie, Robin and Everett. Never heard of three brothers on the same basketball team before. Now they’re all going to March Madness together, which is pretty cool.

No. 3 Michigan vs. No. 1 Michigan State (CBS, 3:30 p.m. ET)
The Wolverines look for revenge after being denied the Big Ten regular-season championship in East Lansing last weekend. Winning a third straight tournament title would ease a lot of the sting. Michigan has won 10 consecutive conference tourney games, posting 75.8 points and winning by an average margin of nearly 14. John Beilein is the common denominator, finding ways to mold different types of teams into juggernauts by the time this juncture of the season rolls around. The head coach got wing Charles Matthews, his lone senior, back from an ankle injury to add depth. He makes a difference even though he hasn't looked 100 percent. Point guard Zavier Simpson has had a tremendous tournament getting everyone involved and controlling pace. Freshman Iggy Brazdeikis was voted the conference's top newcomer, but he fouled out in last weekend's loss after scoring 20 points and will be targeted for mismatches.

Cassius Winston has been nursing numerous injuries but playing through them, so he'll look to hold up physically in order to make the difference against the Spartans' arch rival for the second straight week. The Wolverines held him to 1-for-8 shooting before he made five straight buckets to open a 25-4 run and take control of the game. He's averaging 25 points and 7.5 assists in two games against Michigan. Center Nick Ward missed last week's win but has been effective in his return from a hand injury, giving Tom Izzo a post threat to consistently work through who is more consistent than Xavier Tillman, who had 17 points and five blocks last weekend. Stretch-four Kenny Goins has shot 6-for-15 from 3-point range while grabbing 27 rebounds against Michigan, so he'll be relied upon heavily again. The Spartans were eliminated from last year's Big Ten Tournament by Michigan (75-64) after losing in the regular-season.

No. 5 Auburn vs. No. 3 Tennessee (ESPN, 1 p.m. ET)
Bruce Pearl has the Tigers back in an SEC Tournament title game for the first time since 2000. Auburn hasn't won since 1985. Chuck Person, now embroiled in scandal, led the way as a player. Charles Barkley had just left for the NBA the year prior. This is a rarity for folks on the Plains, so expect the Tigers to receiver that message and come out ready to play. Pearl himself lost at Tennessee in '09, so running into them a decade later after all that's happened is wild. As far as his team goes, they defeated Tennessee 84-80 just last weekend, getting 22 points from Chuma Okeke and 16 points and eight assists from point guard Jared Harper. Both will have to be at their best for the Tigers to pull off this upset and become a historic team. Senior Bryce Brown knocked down four 3-pointers in the win over Tennessee and will have the green light, so count on him being aggressive. Auburn attacked a sound Tennessee defense that ranked top-10 in field-goal percentage defense most of the season. The Tigers wanted no part of bogging down by being complacent. Expect that to remain their strategy

The Vols are playing to put themselves in position for a No. 1 seed, though the NCAA Tournament selection committee typically likes to have their decisions made overnight. It's very possible they're already locked in as a No. 2 seed, but you can expect they'll go out there to try and claim an SEC title anyway. It will be interesting to see if Vols fans can get tickets off of dejected Kentucky fans ready to leave Nashville in order to bolster Tennessee's advantage. Admiral Schofield has been spectacular down the stretch, stepping up to help keep defenses from completely locking in on Grant Williams, whose excellence in the clutch has become a driving force for this group. Point guard Jordan Bone was given a lot of credit for keeping Tennessee poised during its comeback against Kentucky and finished with 17 points, seven assists and just one turnover in the 84-80 March 9 loss that saw the teams combine for 62 3-point attempts. The Vols have won five of six outright since back-to-back road losses to Kentucky and LSU. Auburn has won seven straight.
