Michigan gets two big tests this week

Michigan's follow-up to its national championship game appearance has been impressive so far. Despite losing three key players, the defensive-minded Wolverines have yet to lose this season and blew out then-No. 8 Villanova in a title-game rematch.

Two big tests come this week.

The seventh-ranked Wolverines (6-0) start the week with a prime time, marquee match-up against No. 11 North Carolina on Wednesday in Ann Arbor. Three days later, Michigan opens the early Big Ten season against No. 19 Purdue and preseason All-American guard Carsen Edwards.

''I don't think we're this juggernaut. We're just OK,'' Michigan coach John Beilein said following an 83-55 win over Chattanooga last week. ''No matter what happens next week, we're going to keep growing and trying to get better.''

It's gone pretty well so far.

Michigan lost Moe Wagner, Duncan Robinson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman, leaving the Wolverines without three of their top four scorers from last year's team. But the Wolverines still play with a defensive fervor few teams can match and have allowed one team - George Washington - to eclipse 60 points this season.

It's still early in the season, but Michigan leads the nation in scoring defense, allowing 48.3 points per game, and its closest win was by 19 points.

The Tar Heels are loaded again this year with preseason All-American forward Luke Maye, Cameron Johnson and Kenny Williams back, playing alongside one of Roy Williams' best recruiting classes in Chapel Hill. North Carolina (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Texas in the Las Vegas Invitational, but bounced back by rolling over UCLA in the consolation game.

The Boilermakers (5-1) got huge news during the offseason. Edwards opted to return instead of leaving for the NBA and he hasn't disappointed, leading Purdue with 25.3 points per game while shooting 46 percent. Purdue's only loss came to No. 13 Virginia Tech. The Boilermakers play No. 15 Florida State on Wednesday before heading to Ann Arbor.

Get through this week with two wins and Michigan will be more than OK.

ZAGS AT NO. 1

Gonzaga (6-0) leapfrogged No. 2 Kansas to take over the top spot in this week's AP Top 25 following a rousing victory over former No. 1 Duke in the Maui Invitational title game.

Playing without forward Killian Tillie, one of their best players, the Zags relied on their experience and defense down the stretch to beat the Blue Devils and earn the program's third No. 1 ranking.

Gonzaga rolled over North Dakota State 102-60 on Monday and has what could be a tough road game against Creighton on Saturday. The Bulldogs also will be without Geno Crandall after the reserve guard fractured his right hand during practice on Sunday.

RANKED VS RANKED

Holiday tournament week is typically filled with multiple games between marquee programs and this year was no different.

The week after the holiday tournaments includes just a handful of games between ranked teams.

No. 4 Virginia gets a big test after winning the Battle 4 Atlantis title in the Bahamas, playing at No. 24 Maryland on Wednesday.

The tough Big Ten has another match-up of ranked teams on Friday, when No. 22 Wisconsin plays at No. 14 Iowa.

ROAD BULLS

Buffalo pulled off a massive upset in last year's NCAA Tournament, knocking off Arizona as a No. 13 seed. The Bulls are a popular pick to have some more mid-major magic with five of their top six scorers back.

Buffalo, up to No. 22 in this week's AP Top 25, opened the season with five straight wins and this week will play in Northern Ireland at the Belfast Hall of Fame Classic.

The Bulls open against Milwaukee at the SSE Arena on Friday, then play Stephen F. Austin or San Francisco on Sunday.

WATCH LIST

Arizona State (5-1) just missed being ranked for the first time this season, finishing five points behind No. 25 Mississippi State in this week's poll despite beating the Bulldogs on the way to the MGM Main Event title. The Sun Devils play Omaha on Wednesday and Texas Southern on Saturday, both at home.

Keep an eye on Furman. The Paladins (7-0) have never been ranked in the AP poll, but were right behind Arizona State and Clemson among teams getting votes this week.

NCAA Preview - Michigan State at Louisville

The Michigan State Spartans visit the Louisville Cardinals on Tuesday night in a game that can be seen on ESPN. The Spartans come into this game at 5-1 SU and 4-2 ATS, while the Cardinals are 3-2 SU and 2-2-1 ATS.

The Spartans have played some tough opponents already this season including Kansas, Texas and UCLA. The Cardinals won their first three games of the season, but then suffered losses to Tennessee and Marquette. Let’s look at Michigan State at Louisville and college basketball picks.

This is one of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge matchups and it should be a good one on Tuesday night. Michigan State is one of the top 15 teams in the country, while Louisville has been better than expected. The Cardinals played well in last week’s NIT Season Tip-Off, as they played Tennessee tough for a while and then lost in overtime to Marquette. Both Michigan State and Louisville played in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge a year ago and it was Michigan State beating Notre Dame, while Louisville lost to Purdue.

Michigan State is averaging almost 90 points per game, while giving up about 67 per contest. They have actually gone under in four of their six games. Michigan State has been led by their backcourt duo of Cassius Winston and Joshua Langford who have combined to average 36.5 points per game this season.

The Cardinals have a young squad that goes 10 deep and no player has been averaging more than 28 minutes per game. Louisville is averaging about 86 points per game and giving up 75 per contest. They have gone over in four of their five games this season.

Matchup to Watch

The Cardinals are led in scoring by Jordan Nwora who is averaging 18.4 points and 7 rebounds per game. The Spartans figure to put Kenny Goins on him, although Michigan State really doesn’t have a great choice to defend Nwora. Goins is probably the most capable defender, as Nick Ward isn’t that great on defense and the freshmen, Gabe Brown and Thomas Kithier are not up to the task. It should be Goins against Nwora with Xavier Tillman spelling him. If Michigan State can’t find an answer for Nwora they will have trouble on Tuesday night.

I am tempted to take Louisville, as I expect them to be listed as a home dog in this contest.

I think the better choice in this game is the total. I know that Michigan State has gone under in four of their six games, but that was due to their opponent’s lack of scoring. Louisville is very capable of running up and down the court with Michigan State. Neither of these teams is that great defensively and both have shown early in the season that they can score a lot of points. I expect a high scoring game on Tuesday night that goes over the total at BetDSI.

Wednesday’s 2nd list of 13: Catching up on college hoop

If you spent all of November watching football and you missed the start of college basketball season, here is some of what you missed…….

13) Gonzaga 89, Duke 87— Finals of Maui Classic was a terrific game; Duke led 2-0, but that was it- they were down by 16 with 15:54 left, before tying game late. Zags made 10-19 on the arc, and they were playing without Tillie, who made 47.9% of his 3’s last year.

12) Virginia 53, Wisconsin 46— Predictably slow-paced game (58 possessions) in final of the Battle for Atlantis. Teams combined to go 6-28 on arc; Badgers only got to foul line three times and forced only five turnovers (-8). If you bet the under, this was a rocking chair game.

11) Kansas 87, Tennessee 81 OT— Vols start three seniors, two juniors, led by 8 early in 2nd half, but three Jayhawks played 40:00+ in this OT thriller. Kansas made 44% of its 3’s in its 5-0 start. Tennessee is #36 experience team, Kansas #283.

10) Virginia Tech 89, Purdue 83— Finals of Charleston tourney elevated Hokies into the top 25, which they may have floundered by losing at Penn State last night. Tech outscored Purdue 19-7 on foul line. Both teams made over 40% of their 3’s.

9) Duke 118, Kentucky 84— Result like this in a season opener distorted everyone’s view of the season; did Duke become a little overrated because they played so well in this game? If you’re John Calipari, how do you restore the young Wildcats’ confidence- they were down 91-54 at one point.

8) Louisville 82, Michigan State 78 OT— Chris Mack has a tough job, following Rick Pitino at a place where the fanbase isn’t exactly patient, but this win gets him off on the right foot.

7) San Diego 70, Colorado 64— Toreros are #6 experience team in America; they’re 5-1 with a 3-point loss at Washington. The middle of the WCC is better this season than it has been for a few years. San Diego starts four seniors, so this is a big year for them.

6) Buffalo 99, West Virginia 94 OT— Bob Huggins has young guards this year, which isn’t a good thing, but Buffalo is really good and should dominate the MAC. Bulls were down 69-56 with 8:05 left in regulation, but they forced 19 turnovers (+8) and got a great road win.

5) UConn 83, Syracuse 76— Orangemen don’t leave home before Christmas too much; they made only 23.3% of their 3’s in their first five games. This was Danny Hurley’s first statement win as the new UConn coach, coming in New York City, where it was like an old Big East conference tournament game.

4) Michigan 73, Villanova 46— Wildcats graduated four guys from LY’s national champs, and Michigan took its frustrations out for losing the national title game to Villanova eight months ago- this game was 49-17 at one point. Another early season brickfest, with teams combining to make only 8-32 on the arc.

3) Ohio State 64, Cincinnati 56— Good road win for Buckeyes squad that is experience team #281, while Cincy is #131 in experience. OSU led 55-39 with 5:23 left, before Bearcats made a late run but fell short. Buckeyes also have a road win at Creighton already.

2) Seton Hall 83, Miami 81— Finals of Wooden Legacy tournament in Fullerton; when they announce the Field of 68 in March, games like this will carry some weight, even though it was played almost four months before Selection Sunday. Pirates are #233 experience team; this is a great win for them.

1) Texas 92, North Carolina 89— Longhorns look to be improved this year, after going 30-37 the last two years. Texas lost to Michigan State the next night, but they’ve got this win and a neutral court win over Arkansas- the #256 experience Longhorns hope to be a factor in March.

8) Mike Davis is the guy who replaced Bob Knight as the basketball coach at Indiana, which was an enormous job for a rookie coach. That was 18 years ago.

18 years and three jobs later (he has won at all his coaching stops) Davis is now the coach at Detroit Mercy in the Horizon League. His son Antone is a freshman for the Titans, and the kid can shoot a basketball- he’s made 24 of his last 38 3-point shots.

Horizon League has slipped of late (ranked #24 LY, were as high as #10 in 2011) and Davis got this job because the Titans are 16-47 the last five years. Detroit’s last winning season was in 2013, when their best player was the then-coach’s son (Ray McCallum Jr).

Detroit starts young Davis and four seniors, so they’ll be an interesting follow this winter. They also have five true freshmen, six JC transfers and two graduate transfers.

7) Rough start to the season for the Pac-12; Oregon is their highest-rated team, but the Ducks lost at home to Texas Southern Monday, as a 24-point favorite. Not looking good right now for the Pac-12 to get a lot of at-large spots in the NCAA’s.

6) Texas Southern uses November/December to fund its program, playing a ridiculous number of road games for guarantee fees. Here is who they’ve played so far:

The ongoing ACC/Big Ten Challenge starts to really heat up on Wednesday night highlighted by a pair of head-to-head matchups between nationally ranked teams. Right out of the gate, No. 4 Virginia renews an old ACC rivalry against Maryland.

Later that night, No. 23 Purdue will be on the road against No. 14 Florida State just ahead of a tip between No. 7 North Carolina and No. 18 Michigan in Ann Arbor.

No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers at No. 24 Maryland Terrapins (ESPN, 7:30 p.m. ET)

Betting Matchup

The Cavaliers got a jump on things against the Big Ten last Friday with a 53-46 victory against Wisconsin as four-point favorites in the title game of the Battle 4 Atlantis. This bumped their straight-up record to 6-0 with a 4-2 mark against the spread. The total stayed UNDER 119 points in the win against the Badgers. Virginia’s trademark shutdown defense has allowed an average of 49.3 points per game.

Maryland has won its first six games SU, but it has been a tough bet at 2-4 ATS. The Terrapins have eased they way into the new season as double-digit favorites for all six games and five of those contests were played at home. Junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. has been an early driving force with a team-high 16.8 points and 4.7 assists. He is also pulling down five rebounds a game. Maryland is averaging 84.8 points a game.

Betting Matchup

Purdue’s lone SU loss of the season against five wins was to the ACC’s Virginia Tech Hokies on Nov. 18 in a 89-83 setback as a one-point favorite. The Boilermakers bounced back by crushing Robert Morris 84-46 last Friday to cover a hefty 25.5-point spread on their home court. They are now 4-2 ATS. Junior guard Carsen Edwards was the leading scorer in Friday’s win with 19 points followed closely by fellow guard Ryan Cline with 17 points.

The Seminoles suffered their first SU defeat in their first six games with Sunday’s 66-60 loss to Villanova as 2 ½-point favorites in the championship game of the AdvoCare Invitational. They also failed to cover as 3 ½-point favorites in last Friday’s tight 79-76 win against LSU. Florida State is averaging 79.0 points and 36.5 rebounds per game with four players averaging at least nine points.

NCAA Basketball Game Preview - North Carolina Tar Heels at Michigan Wolverines

The North Carolina Tar Heels might not be getting the same type of attention as their rival Duke, but UNC has another talented team in its own right this year. The Tar Heels could make a big statement this week as they hit the road to face off against the Michigan Wolverines.

Both of these teams are ranked in the top-11 nationally and have both looked solid early in the season. Michigan has a big early-season win over Villanova under its belt already and could really turn some heads by picking up this one against North Carolina.

The Wolverines are at home and should be a slight favorite to pick up the victory in NCAA basketball betting lines.

This NCAA basketball game between the North Carolina Tar Heels and Michigan Wolverines will be held at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan at 9:30 p.m ET on Wednesday, November 28th, 2018. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Odds Analysis

Michigan has started the season with a perfect 6-0 record, including a 3-0 mark at home. North Carolina is 6-1, with its lone loss coming by just three points to Texas. The Tar Heels bounced back last time out by knocking off the No. 17 ranked UCLA Bruins.

The Wolverines are the three-point favorites to win this matchup at home. The scoring total is listed at 146.5 points. Check back later for a moneyline option, as choosing the Tar Heels to pull the upset could pay off nicely in NCAA basketball gambling.

Key Stat

48.3. That’s the number of points Michigan has allowed in the earlygoing, which is the lowest number of any team in the country. The Wolverines have shut down some bad teams, but they have also done a tremendous job against high-major foes. Michigan faced off with Villanova earlier this season in a rematch of the national championship game and came away with a 73-46 win.

North Carolina is not an easy team to slow down as it is averaging 96.6 points per contest. It is going to be interesting to see which team can dictate the pace in this one. The oddsmakers don’t believe the Tar Heels are going to be held down too much as the scoring total expects a high-scoring game.

Player To Watch

Cameron Johnson -- North Carolina has some nice experience on its team, which is rare among the best teams in college basketball that often see their players head to the NBA. Johnson is a senior forward who is averaging 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 53.9 percent from the field and 48.5 percent from three-point range.

Johnson has been in myriad hostile environments throughout his career and will be more than ready for this matchup. If he has a good game it could help North Carolina come away with a nice early-season road win.

Michigan has started off strong but North Carolina is a bit underrated. This team can score on anyone in the country and will show that ability against the stingy Wolverines. This one should come down to the final minutes, but look for the Tar Heels to hit enough big shots to pull the upset in NCAA basketball gambling.

The “over” is the pick as the pace should be fast in this one, especially if North Carolina gets ahead and forces the pace to be fast in the second half.

Guy scores 18, No. 4 Virginia outlasts No. 24 Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) Kyle Guy scored 18 points and No. 4 Virginia combined effective outside shooting with its usual stout defense to slip past 24th-ranked Maryland 76-71 Wednesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The Cavaliers (7-0) blew most of a 17-point lead before making six free throws in the final 37 seconds to hand Maryland its first loss. Ty Jerome scored 17 and De'Andre Hunter had 15 for Virginia, which improved to 121-35 in nonconference games under coach Tony Bennett.

Guy nailed five 3-pointers and the Cavaliers went 10 for 22 beyond the arc. Virginia committed only two turnovers and had assists on 15 of its 28 baskets.

Bruno Fernando had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 15 for the Terrapins (6-1). After trailing 48-31 with 16:29 left, Maryland closed to 63-59 before Jerome popped a 3-pointer and Jack Salt added a dunk to quell the comeback.

NO. 6 TENNESSEE 95, EASTERN KENTUCKY 67

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Grant Williams had 21 points and 11 rebounds as No. 6 Tennessee bounced back from its first loss of the season.

Tennessee (5-1) was playing for the first time since falling in overtime to No. 2 Kansas on Friday at the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York.

Eastern Kentucky (3-4) and Tennessee were tied 11-all seven minutes into the game before the Volunteers scored 13 straight points to pull ahead for good.

Admiral Schofield scored 20 points and shot 8 of 9 from the floor for Tennessee. Jordan Bone added 14 points and seven assists. Williams had five assists to go along with his double-double.

Nick Mayo led Eastern Kentucky with 23 points and nine rebounds.

NO. 7 MICHIGAN 84, NO. 11 NORTH CAROLINA 67

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Charles Matthews had 21 points and seven rebounds, and Zavier Simpson spearheaded another impressive defensive effort by Michigan, which rolled past North Carolina.

Jordan Poole scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half for the Wolverines (7-0), who led 39-35 at halftime and then shut down the Tar Heels' fast-paced offense for a while. North Carolina (6-2) came in averaging 96.6 points per game, but Michigan was allowing half that at 48.3. The Tar Heels ended up a good deal closer to the lower number.

Michigan outscored North Carolina 34-16 in the first 12:13 of the second half. At times, just getting a shot to the rim felt like an accomplishment for the Tar Heels. An alley-oop dunk by Jon Teske put the Wolverines up 49-39, causing North Carolina to take a timeout.

Luke Maye had 11 points and 15 rebounds for North Carolina.

NO. 8 AUBURN 99, SAINT PETER'S 49

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Anfernee McLemore and Bryce Brown each scored 19 points as Auburn rolled past Saint Peter's.

The Tigers (6-1) scored the game's first 13 points and led by as many as 32 before halftime over the Peacocks (1-5), who have lost five straight.

McLemore tied a career-high in points and Auburn had five players score in double figures.

Austin Wiley had 16 points and nine rebounds. Malik Dunbar scored 14 off the bench, including four 3-pointers, and Chuma Okeke added 12. Okeke was 5-of-5 shooting.

Davauhnte Turner and KC Ndefo scored 12 points each for the Peacocks.

NO. 10 KENTUCKY 90, MONMOUTH 44

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Tyler Herro had 16 points, Keldon Johnson added 15 and Kentucky cruised past Monmouth for its sixth straight victory.

The Wildcats (6-1) never trailed, though the winless Hawks (0-8) used a 12-5 spurt to get within 22-18. Kentucky took charge from there, closing the first half on a 22-4 run over 8:46 for a 44-22 halftime lead and stretching the lead to as many as 47 with 2:40 remaining.

Quade Green had four 3-pointers for 14 points, and Reid Travis scored 13 for the Wildcats.

Ray Salnave had 14 points for Monmouth, which shot just 2 of 16 from behind the arc.

NO. 15 FLORIDA STATE 73, NO. 19 PURDUE 72

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Trent Forrest forced a turnover with 16 seconds left and drove the lane to hit a pull-up jumper with 5.2 seconds remaining as Florida State rallied to beat Purdue.

The basket was Forrest's only one of the second half, but the defensie play was part of a critical sequence as the Seminoles (6-1) held on after Purdue led by eight points with 3:43 left.

Purdue (5-2) didn't score after holding that eight-point lead. That included a pair of missed free-throw attempts by Carsen Edwards, who led the Boilermakers with 24 points on 7 of 19 shooting.

Ryan Cline added 21 points, including four 3-pointers after halftime, for Purdue.

M.J. Walker scored 13 points to lead the Seminoles.

SYRACUSE 72, NO. 16 OHIO STATE 62

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Tyus Battle scored 20 points and Elijah Hughes added 18 to help Syracuse upset Ohio State in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Syracuse (4-2) won its second straight by shooting 49 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range.

C.J. Jackson had 19 points for Ohio State, and Kaleb Wesson contributed 13 for the Buckeyes (6-1).

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) 40 years ago this week, one of my all-time favorite TV shows made its debut on CBS.

The White Shadow was about a retired NBA player who coached an inner-city high school team in Los Angeles- his old college friend was the school’s principal.

The show starred Ken Howard, who was brilliant as a high school coach who bickered with the female assistant principal; the show was written by Bruce Paltrow, better known as Gwyneth Paltrow’s father.

Now that I’ve written that, I feel old. 40 years ago. Damn

12) This week, Major League Baseball announced a multi-year partnership with MGM Resorts that includes sponsorships and promotions across various media platforms, as legalized wagering becomes an established thing all over America. Right now, eight states have legal sports betting, with more to come, for sure.

11) Last year, Scott Tolzien started at QB in the Colts’ season opener against the Rams in LA; Tuesday night, he was the THIRD quarterback taken by the Birmingham Fire in the new AAF, who will be coached by former Packers’ DB Tim Lewis.

10) If you’re wondering about this new football league, the AAF that drafted its QBs Tuesday night, there will be no TV timeouts and 60% fewer commercials than NFL games.

Other differences will include no kickoffs and instead of onside kicks, the trailing team will get the ball on their own 35-yard line facing 4th-and-10. There will also be a 30-second play clock and mandatory two-point conversion attempts after touchdowns.

The league starts the Saturday night after the Super Bowl and has a 10-game schedule this year, with eight teams in the league, at least for the first season.

9) USC kept head football coach Clay Helton, but four assistant coaches were told to take a hike over the weekend. In college football, the assistant coaches do the recruiting, so this is no small thing, since college football recruiting is basically a 24/7/365 pursuit.

8) Larry Scott is the commissioner of the Pac-12 conference; he makes $3.1M a year, more money than every football coach in the Pac-12.

Greg Sankey is the commissioner of the SEC; he makes around a million bucks a year, less than every head football coach in the SEC.

At $3M a year, you’d think Mr Scott could find a way to get the Pac-12 Network on DirecTV.

7) West Virginia OC/play caller Jake Spavital is the new football coach at Texas State; they must’ve been watching that 59-56 game with Oklahoma last week. Mountaineers finished in the top 10 nationally in scoring offense this year; Spavital is considered a really good recruiter, which will come in handy at Texas State, which needs a lot of players.

6) Purdue football coach Jeff Brohm turned down Louisville’s offer, will stay as coach of the Boilermakers, which is good news for Purdue football fans.

4) Why is ESPN running another hour-long story on Bob Knight? Hasn’t this subject been beaten to death by now? Knight won three national titles but was a creep/bully who made the game less fun for everyone around him. When winning isn’t fun, thats a problem.

3) Vanderbilt’s star freshman guard Darius Garland is out for this season after he had meniscus surgery; big loss for the Commodores.

2) Fact that I found weird: Eldrick Woods made his first hole-in-one in 20 years last week while playing golf with Fred Couples in La Quinta, CA. How does a guy who is that good a golfer go 20 years in between hole-in-ones?

1) I’m guessing you do too, but I get dozens of e-mails from companies promoting their Cyber Monday or Black Friday sales. They shout out “Hurry before its too late!!!!”

When it comes to spending your money, it is never too late. A few hours after that sale ends, another one just like it begins, and that too, according to e-mails, is too good to pass up.

Guess it is a cheaper way of advertising, but enough already with the e-mails!!!!
