      Quote of the Day
“The word “listen” has the same letters as the word ‘silent’”

      Friday’s quiz
      Where is Gonzaga University located?

      Thursday’s quiz
Portland Trailblazers have excellent guards, Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum; Lillard went to college at Weber State, McCollum went to Lehigh.

      Wednesday’s quiz
LSU’s basketball arena is named after the late Pete Maravich.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…….

      13) Annual tradition here in not-so-beautiful upstate New York. When it snows outside, and it is snowing now. I get on the Interweb and price condos in Las Vegas, where snow is merely a rumor.

Snow is the only bad part of living here; nothing is quite as much fun as getting up on a step-ladder to sweep the snow off my satellite dish.

      12) Last year at this time the Miami Marlins sold off their whole outfield; Stanton, Ozuna and Yelich. Wonder what the odds were that of those three guys, Christian Yelich would be the MVP this season? He had a great year, leading Milwaukee to a playoff berth.

      11) San Diego Union-Tribune writer John Maffei is the only one out of 30 voters who didn’t vote for Jacob deGrom for the NL Cy Young Award. Mr Maffei values W-L record as a stat, so deGrom’s 10-9 record for a dismal Mets team didn’t impress him much.

      10) UConn 83, Syracuse 76— Huskies made 12-21 behind arc; Syracuse was playing without G Howard; things aren’t as easy when you play away from home.

      9) DePaul 72, Penn State 70 OT— Nittany Lions jumped out to 11-0 lead, trailed 36-31 at half, then forced OT, where they missed wide open, game-tying jumper at end of OT. DePaul is 3-0 for first time in ten years.

      8) Ohio State 69, Creighton 60— Second quality road win for the young Buckeyes, who won at Cincinnati last week.

      7) Seahawks 27, Packers 24— Seattle outrushed Green Bay 173-48; Packers converted only 3-11 third down plays. 46-yard FG Crosby missed when Packers led 7-0 turned out to be painful.

      6) Houston Rockets and Carmelo Anthony parted ways after 10 games; who thought this pairing was going to be a good idea? Anthony didn’t want to come off the bench, but when you get older and your skills decline, what did he think was going to happen?

      5) Lakers’ G Rajon Rondo broke his hand, is out 3-5 weeks.

      4) Former LSU football coach Les Miles took a one-time lump sum payment of $1.5M from the school, reduced from the $6.5M he was scheduled to get over the next five years, but that tells me that Miles is going to be a head coach somewhere else next season. If he took the $6.5M, he would’ve had to stay out of coaching until 2023.

      3) Someone on Twitter posted a list of their ten favorite airports, and it started a firestorm of responses; since I only fly to one place, and it is usually a non-stop flight, my list is short:

      1) Las Vegas
      2) Albany
      3) Baltimore (sometimes my flights stop there; they have a Chick-fil-A)

      2) Cal Bears postponed their basketball game with Detroit Mercy Thursday night because of poor air quality in the area due to the wild fires. San Francisco also postponed Friday night’s home basketball game with Arizona State.

      1) Jim Boeheim has been the basketball coach at Syracuse for 43 years; he played for the Orange, was an assistant coach there before being head coach. Boeheim’s son Buddy is a player for Syracuse now; how the hell do they spell the kid’s last name wrong on his orange jersey?

St Joe’s made 16-30 on arc yesterday- they scored 82 ppg in first three games. UCF is a top 40 experience team; they’ve got three starters back from 19-13 team that went 9-9 in AAC.

West Virginia has young guards so they’ll struggle against teams they can’t dominate inside. WKU has two starters back from a 27-11 team that lost in NIT semifinals- they used three guys 30:00+ yesterday.

2K Classic, Madison Square Garden, NYC
Syracuse is playing without G Howard, which hurts; they used three guys 36:00+ in 83-76 loss to UConn last nite, when Huskies made 12-21 on arc. Orange are making 21.8% of their 3’s so far- young Boeheim is 1-11 behind arc. Only one of eight guys Orange played last night is a senior. Oregon lost three starters from a 23-13 team that was in NIT- they shot only 37.8% inside arc in loss to Iowa last nite. Three Ducks played 32:00+. ACC favorites are 13-6 vs spread this season; Pac-12 underdogs are 0-4 vs spread so far this season.

UConn made 12-21 on arc in emotional win last nite; how will they bounce back here, vs Iowa team that played only one guy more than 28:00 last nite. Huskies won first three games of Dan Hurley era; they’ve got three starters back from 14-18 team that cost Kevin Ollie has job. Iowa has all five starters back from 14-19 team that went 4-14 in Big 14; they got to foul line 33 times (29-33) in 77-69 win over Oregon last nite- they also made 10-29 on arc. CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) No. 16 Virginia Tech and No. 23 Purdue both go into Friday looking for berths in the Charleston Classic championship game.

The Hokies and Boilermakers each had handy opening round wins and seek to advance in the semifinals.

Virginia Tech got 21 points from Nickeil Alexander-Walker to defeat Ball State 73-64. Purdue star guard Carsen Edwards had 25 points in a 92-70 win over Appalachian State.

The Boilermakers (3-0) take on Davidson (3-0), which upended Wichita State 57-53.

In the consolation bracket, the Crimson Tide (2-1) play Ball State (1-2) and Appalachian State (1-2) faces Wichita State (1-2).

The tournament will take Saturday off before finishing up at TD Arena with four games Sunday.

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) The Paradise Jam tournament begins play Friday with Oregon State facing Old Dominion in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

That is the first of four games in the first round of the eight-team field. No. 12 Kansas State headlines the field and opens play against Eastern Kentucky in Friday night's final game.

Kennesaw State will take on Missouri in the second game, while Northern Iowa faces Penn in the day's third game at the University of the Virgin Islands' Sports and Fitness Center.

The Paradise Jam returns to the Virgin Islands after a one-year absence caused by the damage suffered from Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017.

No. 12 Kansas St. beats E. Kentucky at Paradise Jam
                    November 17, 2018
                    By The Associated Press

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP) Xavier Sneed scored 16 points to lead five Kansas State players in double figures, and the Wildcats led by as many as 31 points in the second half in their 95-68 win over Eastern Kentucky at the Paradise Jam on Friday night.

Dean Wade and Cartier Diarra added 14 points each, and Kamau Stokes and Barry Brown Jr. had 10 points apiece for the 12th-ranked Wildcats (3-0).

''Our guys have prepared well, but I don't think they realize how their opponents are preparing for us,'' Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. ''Those guys, they know if they beat us, they're going on ESPN because we're a Top-15 team. So they're going to come at us with some emotion.

''At times, we got some good reads and made some easy layups; other times, we forced the issue. The second half, we were much better. We got some steals and some easy layups, and started to break their spirit.''

Dujuanta Weaver scored 12 points and Nick Mayo added 11 points for Eastern Kentucky (2-2), whose only lead came when Kelvin Robinson's jumper 19 seconds in made it 2-0.

But Kansas State went on a 13-5 run over the next six minutes before taking a 37-28 lead into halftime.

James Love's hook shot made it 93-62 with 1:46 to play.

''We drew the toughest team, with a Hall of Fame coach coming off an Elite Eight appearance,'' Colonels coach A.W. Hamilton said. ''We fought like crazy, we tested them and made them work. But that's the No. 12 team in the country, and we're building right now. We battled like crazy. We had some chances to take the lead early, and we just couldn't get it to go in.''

In Friday's other games at Paradise Jam:

                    PENN 78, NORTHERN IOWA 71

There's not much that bothers Penn's men's basketball team - and certainly not something like a missed flight.

The Quakers quickly shook off the team's travel woes to beat Northern Iowa 78-71.

Devon Goodman scored a career-high 27 points and three other players finished in double figures as Penn (4-0) rallied in the second half to advance into Sunday's semifinal games at the University of the Virgin Islands' Sports and Fitness Center.

''It's just not that big a deal, it's overrated,'' said Quakers coach Steve Donahue. ''The only way it bothers you is if you let it.

''I'm glad everyone got here safely, but there's a lot of other things that I need to worry about as a coach. We just came out excited to play basketball.''

Penn's travel adventure began at 4 a.m. Thursday, when the team boarded a bus to Philadelphia International Airport for a 6 a.m. American Airlines flight to Miami.

However, only two members of the traveling party - Donahue and one of the team's radio broadcast crew - made the flight after the rest of the team encountered problems at the ticket counter.

The Quakers' starters and key reserves were rebooked onto American flights going through Miami and Charlotte, North Carolina, and on to St. Thomas. Those players arrived Thursday afternoon in time for a walkthrough practice.

The rest of the Penn's traveling crew - walk-on reserves, managers, assistant coaches and other personnel - were booked on a JetBlue flight to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with connections (after long layovers) to San Juan and, finally, St. Thomas.

That group didn't arrive on St. Thomas until 8 a.m. Friday - 28 hours after boarding that bus to the Philly airport.

''And we went straight to practice,'' said guard Ray Jerome, one of the 16 in the final group. ''I couldn't feel my legs. We just stayed positive the whole time. We knew we were going to get there; the question was when.''

Down 41-34 with 18:49 left, Penn fought back to tie the score twice before pulling ahead for good at 58-56 on Bryce Washington's 3-pointer with 8:56 remaining. The Quakers would go on to extend their lead to seven points three times in the final 2 minutes.

Washington and Antonio Woods finished with 12 points each, and AJ Brodeur had 11 points for Penn.

AJ Green scored 21 points, and Wyatt Lohaus and Luke McDonnell added 11 points each for the Panthers (1-2), who will play in the consolation round Saturday.

OREGON STATE 61, OLD DOMINION 56

Gligorije Rakocevic scored 15 points, including a pair of key baskets down the stretch, and the Beavers (3-0) rallied in the second half to beat the Monarchs (1-2).

Tres Tinkle had 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Stephen Thompson Jr. scored a game-high 17 points for Oregon State.

B.J. Stith scored 15 points, Ahmad Caver added 12 and Justice Kithcart had 10 points for Old Dominion.

                    MISSOURI 55, KENNESAW STATE 52

Kevin Puryear scored 17 points and Jeremiah Tilmon had 12 points, and the Tigers (2-1) pulled ahead in the final two minutes to beat the Owls (1-3).

Tyler Hooker and Kosta Jankovic finished with 13 points each, and Kyle Clarke added 10 points for Kennesaw State.

Williams and Lamar Morgan led Coppin State (0-4) with six points each. The Eagles trailed 45-17 at halftime and 63-20 after a 15-0 run by Virginia in the second half.

Mamadi Diakite started for Virginia in place of Jack Salt and had a career-high 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Salt was sidelined by a stiff back.

Dujuanta Weaver scored 12 points and Nick Mayo added 11 points for the Colonels (2-2), whose only lead came when Kelvin Robinson's jumper 19 seconds in made it 2-0.

                            **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

                            13) Today’s Cal-Stanford football game was moved to December 1, due to poor air quality in the Berkeley area because of the wildfires in northern California.

                            12) Monday is always one of my favorite sports days of the year; first day of the Maui Classic, plus Monday Night Football, but this year should be even better.

Rams-Chiefs is obviously a possible Super Bowl preview, plus the Maui Classic this year has an amazing field, eight good-to-great teams.

                            First round Maui matchups:
Game 1: Auburn vs. Xavier, 2:30 on ESPN2
Game 2: Duke vs. San Diego State, 5:00 on ESPN2
Game 3: Arizona vs. Iowa State, 9:00 on ESPNU
Game 4: Gonzaga vs. Illinois, 11:30 on ESPN2

Not a bad day; I’m guessing there will also be pizza involved.

                            11) The record for most 3-pointers made in a D-I basketball game is 15; the record has been tied twice this week, first by Furman’s Jordan Lyons, and then by Josh Williams of Robert Morris.

Lyons was 15-34 on the arc in a 107-67 win over North Georgia; Williams was 15-25 in a 104-57 win over Mt Aloysius- both of those opponents are obviously not D-I opponents, but still…….

                            10) It is funny how TV people change their mind: 15-20 years ago, when John Chaney had his Temple Owls rolling, he helped popularize the idea that when one of your players got two fouls in the first half, he sat for the rest of the half. It became almost an unwritten rule, and guys on TV religiously adhered to that. Keep the player out of foul trouble so he can play hard later on.

Nowadays, coaches don’t do that as much; with thinner rosters due to more transfers and early jumps to the NBA, coaches try to steal minutes here and there when a guy has two fouls in the first half, and yes, the TV guys are now saying that THIS is the right way to coach. Go figure.

                            9) University of Houston DT Ed Oliver, projected as a first round pick in next April’s NFL Draft, missed his 4th straight game Thursday; apparently there is tension between Oliver and the Houston coaching staff on that issue- Cougars lost two of their last three games.

Oliver and coach Major Applewhite had a heated exchange as the team walked off the field at halftime Thursday; Oliver didn’t return to the sidelines for the second half.

                            8) Worse news for Houston is that their QB, D’Eriq King, tore up his knee Thursday and is done for the season.

                            7) Green Bay Packers were trailing Seattle 27-24 Thursday night and had a 4th-and-2 from their own 33 with around 4:30 left; they punted, despite having only one timeout left and having Aaron Rodgers as their QB. Green Bay never got the ball back and coach Mike McCarthy took a ton of grief for it Friday.

Winning only Super Bowl in 13 years when your QB’s were Brett Favre and Rodgers might get McCarthy shown the door after this season.

                            6) Packers’ TE Jimmy Graham broke his thumb Thursday; not sure how long he is out for.

                            5) NFL teams who have the fewest draft picks playing somewhere in the NFL:
                            — 31 Giants
                            — 32 Jets
                            — 34 Falcons, Chargers
                            — 35 Titans, Bears
                            — 37 Saints

                            4) A 27-year-old Georgia man and his 54-year-old mother were arrested Tuesday at an IHOP restaurant in Newnan, GA after the man escaped prison, but then stopped at IHOP for pancakes, and also to meet with his children. Unfortunately the mother ran a stop sign on her way to the IHOP, which was her undoing.

The man had been slated for work release; now he’s charged with felony escape and his mother is charged with aiding and abetting.

                            3) Iowa 91, UConn 72— Huskies had an emotional win over Syracuse Thursday, then were flat as a pancake here, and got squashed here by the Hawkeyes.

                            2) Loyola Marymount 65, Georgetown 52— Lions are 4-0; Mike Dunlap is a really good coach- he used to be a head coach in the NBA and he won a national title in D-2 ball. LMU is trying to play like Virginia this year and so far, it is working.

                            1) RIP William Goldman, 87, who wrote All The President’s Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; he also worked on the script for A Few Good Men and had a great writing career that included Marathon Man, The Princess Bride, The Stepford Wives, The Great Waldo Pepper, A Bridge Too Far, Chaplin and Misery.

                            RIP, sir.
Remember the 3 G's Gambling, Golf, Girls not in any particular order.....
