  • Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……

    13) After spreading lot of rumors to the contrary this week, turns out that Major League Baseball has no plans to adopt a universal DH before the 2022 season, which is disappointing.

This collective bargaining agreement ends in three years; the DH will apparently be a bargaining chip in the next CBA. Too bad it couldn’t be put into place sooner.

    12) Gonzaga won its first nine WCC games by n average of 29.2 ppg, the biggest average margin of victory in a team’s first nine conference games over the last 21 years.

    11) Pac-12 is having a dismal basketball season, right now, Washington is 10-0 in conference, with the next eight teams in the standings all either 6-4 or 5-5.

Pac-12 has slipped below the AAC in conference ratings; Washington is the only Pac-12 team with a shot at an at-large bid. Pac-12 is a one-bid league if Washington wins Pac-12 tourney, and maybe even a one-bid league no matter what if the Huskies stumble down the stretch.

    10) Front office of the New Orleans Pelicans think the Lakers were tampering with Anthony Davis, so they purposely jerked the Lakers around in trade talks the last two weeks, never intending to send their star player to LA, at least not to the Lakers.

We’ll see if the Pelicans cut off their own nose to spite their face; can they can get a better deal for Davis from another team?

    9) Kansas basketball star Lagerald Vick is taking a leave of absence for unsaid reasons, but its not good news for a Jayhawk squad that lost four of its last six games.

    8) Eight NHL games went to overtime Thursday night, the most ever in one day.

    7) Former Texas Longhorn QB Shane Buechele is leaving the Longhorns and will transfer to SMU, where he will be eligible to play next season.

    6) Friday, the NCAA approved a waiver that allows sophomore transfer quarterback Justin Fields to play right away for Ohio State. Fields played as a true freshman at Georgia in 2018 and transferred to the Buckeyes in January following bowl season.

    5) NCAA basketball conferences that are playing the fastest tempo:
Atlantic Sun, Ohio Valley, Sun Belt, Southern Conference

    Slowest tempos:
Missouri Valley, Colonial, America East, Big West

    4) NCAA basketball conferences that are making highest %age of 3’s:
Summit, Southern Conference, Sun Belt, Big West

    Lowest %age of 3’s made:
Ivy League, Atlantic 14, MEAC, SWAC

    3) NCAA basketball conferences that are making highest %age of foul shots:
    Summit, CAA, Horizon, Big East

    Lowest %age of FT’s made:
    SWAC, MEAC, Ivy, Big West

    2) NCAA basketball conferences with highest home court win %:
SWAC, AAC, Big X, Big South

    Lowest home court win %:
    Big West, MEAC, Big Sky/SEC.

    1) NCAA basketball conferences with highest %age of close games:
    Lowest %age of close games:
Mountain West, Pac-12, Atlantic Sun, ACC

      • Duke at Virginia
        February 8, 2019
        By Brian Edwards

Round 2 (of probably three and maybe even four?) of the Duke-Virginia men’s basketball rivalry in 2018-19 will take place Saturday in Charlottesville at John Paul Jones Arena. As of late Friday afternoon, several offshore books had Virginia (20-1 straight up, 16-5 against the spread) installed as a two-point favorite with a total of 136.

When these teams met at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham on Jan. 19, Duke (20-2 SU, 14-8 ATS) captured a 72-70 win but failed to cover the number as a four-point home favorite. The 142 combined points went ‘over’ the 136-point total even thought there were only 127 combined points 69 seconds remaining. The side could’ve gone either way, too, as UVA got the backdoor cover thanks to a bucket with three ticks left.

R.J. Barrett led the way with 30 points, five rebounds and three assists compared to only one turnover. Zion Williamson made 10-of-16 field-goal attempts and finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot. Cam Reddish contributed nine points, eight boards and a pair of steals.

UVA sophomore De’Andre Hunter had 18 points and four rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome scored 14 points apiece, but they combined to make only 3-of-12 attempts from 3-point range. The Cavs hit only 3-of-17 (17.6%) shots from downtown, although they made 52.8 percent of their overall FGAs.

Duke had a 30-27 edge in the rebounding department. The Blue Devils went to the free-throw line 31 times compared to 17 trips to the stripe for UVA.

Since hooking up its betting supporters with 10 consecutive spread covers, Tony Bennett’s squad has failed to cover in back-to-back games after beating Miami 56-46 as an 18-point home ‘chalk’ this past Saturday. Hunter led the way with 14 points, six rebounds, two assists, a pair of steals and one blocked shot. Kamari Diakite finished with 11 points, six boards and three blocks, while Kyle Guy contributed 10 points, four rebounds and three assists without a turnover. The Cavaliers dominated the glass with a 40-23 rebounding advantage over UM.

UVA is ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense (52.9 points per game) and at defending the 3-point line (24.7%). The Cavs are third nationally in field-goal percentage defense, forcing foes to make merely 37.0 percent of their shots. They aren’t too shabby at the other end, either, ranking 14th in the country in 3-point accuracy (39.5%), 19th in free-throw percentage (76.1%) and 39th in FG percentage (47.7%).

Hunter, who went down with an injury late in last year’s regular season and didn’t play in his team’s unprecedented 1/16 loss in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, is averaging a team-best 14.7 PPG. Hunter averages 5.4 RPG, has a 47/24 assist-to-turnover ratio, makes 52.9 percent of his FGAs and 43.2 percent of his 3-pointers.

Guy (14.5 PPG, 4.5 RPG) has a 44/26 assist-to-turnover ratio, hits 43.8 percent of his trifectas and 85.4 percent of his FTAs. Jerome (13.0 PPG) is burying 40.6 percent of his downtown launches and has a stellar 99/33 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Virginia is undefeated in 11 home games with an 8-3 spread record. The Cavs are 6-1 ATS in seven games as single-digit favorites, 2-0 ATS in pair of single-digit home ‘chalk’ situations.

UVA is ranked No. 1 at KenPom.com, compiling a 7-1 record against K-Pom Top 50 opponents. The Cavs are 13-1 against the Top 100.

Duke and UVA are in a three-way tie with North Carolina for first place in the ACC standings with 8-1 records. This trio holds a one-game edge over Louisville, which is a short road underdog (+2.5) at FSU. UVA has won seven of its nine ACC games by double-digit margins.

Duke has won outright in all four of its true road games while posting a 3-1 spread record. The Blue Devils have had less prep time for UVA since they had to play on Tuesday, beating Boston College 80-55 as 24-point home favorites. The 135 combined points dropped ‘under’ the 158-point total. Mike Krzyzewski’s team trailed BC 30-28 at intermission before covering in front-door fashion by taking its only 25-point lead with about a minute remaining.

Reddish went 8-of-16 from the field and scored a game-high 24 points. Barrett had 19 points, five rebounds and a pair of assists, while Williamson produced 16 points, 17 rebounds, four steals, three assists and three blocked shots. Tre Jones added 11 points, five rebounds, one rejection and three assists without a turnover.

Since losing in overtime at home to Syracuse on Jan. 14 when Jones left the game early in the first half with an injured shoulder and Reddish was ‘out’ sick, Duke has won six straight games and gone 4-1 ATS its last five times out. The last five victories have come by 13 points or more, including a 91-61 home win over St. John’s last Saturday. (The Red Storm bounced back and won at Marquette 72 hours later.)

Williamson torched the Johnnies by making 13-of-17 FGAs in a 29-point effort. The freshman sensation also had six rebounds, five steals and a pair of rejections, while Barrett added 15 points and 14 boards.

This is only Duke’s second (and probably last) underdog spot of the season. In their opener at Banker Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis back on Nov. 6, the Blue Devils humbled Kentucky by a 118-84 count as 2.5-point ‘dogs. Barrett, Williamson and Reddish scored 33, 28 and 22 points, respectively, in their collegiate debuts.

Barrett is averaging 23.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Williamson (22.0 PPG, 2.0 BPG) is averaging team-highs in rebounding (9.4 RPG), steals (2.1 SPG) and FG percentage (68.2%). Reddish is scoring at a 13.5 PPG clip, while Marques Bolden (5.7 PPG, 4.8 RPG) leads the Blue Devils in blocked shots (46, 2.1 BPG). Jones (8.4 PPG) has an incredible 110/23 assist-to-turnover ratio and 39 steals.

Duke is ranked fourth in the country in scoring with its 87.0 PPG average. The Blue Devils rank No. 21 nationally in FG percentage (48.6%), but they struggle from 3-point land (#317 nationally, 30.8%). They defend at a high level as well, ranking sixth in the nation in FG-percentage defense (38.2%) and ninth at defending the 3-point line (28.8%). Duke is 38th nationally in scoring ‘D’ (65.2 PPG).

Duke is No.2 at K-Pom, going 8-2 versus the Top 50 and 13-2 against the Top 100.

Since Duke’s win over UVA saw the ‘over’ hit, the ‘under’ has been a winner in each of its past five games. The ‘under’ is 15-5-2 overall for the Blue Devils, 3-0-1 in their road assignments.

The ‘under’ has cashed in back-to-back UVA games to improve to 12-9 overall and 7-4 in its home games.

Tip-off on ESPN is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Eastern.

        B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Washington won its 12th straight game, covered the spread for the 10th consecutive time and remained unbeaten in Pac-12 play with Thursday’s 67-60 win at Arizona as a 2.5-point underdog. The Huskies hooked up money-line backers with a +125 return. Noah Dickerson (ankle) was a game-time decision and didn’t start, but he contributed 10 points and three rebounds in 26 minutes of playing time. Mike Hopkins’ squad plays Saturday at Arizona State. The Sun Devils are desperate for a win here, especially after seeing their resume decimated by Thursday’s 91-70 loss to Washington State as 15-point home favorites.

-- Speaking of the Cougars, let’s give a shout out to one of the nation’s most underrated players, Robert Franks. The Washington State big man was downright nasty against the Sun Devils, erupting for 34 points, 13 rebounds, four steals, four blocked shots and two assists. Nate Ellery nearly had a triple-double for the Cougars, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

-- Looking for an under-the-radar squad that could be heard from in March and, most importantly for our purposes, is cashing tickets galore? We introduce you to the Hofstra Pride, the owners of a 20-4 SU record and an 18-5 ATS mark. After an overtime loss at VCU on Nov. 24, Hofstra won 16 games in a row until falling last Saturday at Northeastern (a team that won by double digits at Harvard, beat Alabama by 16 on a neutral court and only lost by three at Hofstra). The Pride bounced back in Thursday’s 102-61 win over Elon as an 18-point home favorite. Hofstra, which is 11-3 ATS in its past 14 outings, will host William & Mary on Saturday. The Pride is led by senior guard Justin Wright-Foreman, who averages 25.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He’s making 51.1 percent of his FGAs, 41.4 percent of his launches from downtown and 87.8 percent of his FTAs. Wright-Foreman scored at a 24.4 PPG clip last season and averaged 18.1 PPG as a sophomore.

-- The injury notes below were all from late Friday afternoon, so you’ll obviously want to check these for updates on Saturday morning. Let’s start with Colgate’s Jordan Burns, who averages 17.4 points, 5.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 SPG. He’s ‘questionable’ against Loyola-Maryland due to a leg injury.

-- Creighton guard Ty-Shon Alexander (knee) is ‘questionable’ at Seton Hall. Alexander averages 17.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.7 APG. The Pirates and Bluejays will collide at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on the CBS Sports Network.

-- Baylor’s Makai Mason (foot) is ‘questionable’ for a home game vs. Kansas State. Mason averages 16.1 points and 3.0 APG for the Bears, who saw their six-game winning streak both SU and ATS snapped in Wednesday’s 84-72 loss at Texas. The Wildcats are in first place in the Big 12 with their 7-2 record. Iowa State is one-half game back at 7-3, while Baylor is one game behind at 6-3. Texas Tech and Kansas are 6-4 in Big 12 action.

-- Speaking of the Jayhawks, their quest to win a 15th straight Big 12 regular-season championship is in even greater danger after yesterday’s news that Lagerald Vick is not going be around for at least a few games. “Lagerald has some personal matters that require his immediate attention and he will be taking a leave of absence from our team,” KU head coach Bill Self said in a statement released by the school. “During this time, we will respect Lagerald’s privacy. There’s no timetable for his return.” Vick, the starting senior guard, is averaging 14.1 points and 4.0 RPG while draining 45.5 percent of his 3-balls. Without Vick’s threat from the perimeter, KU star Dedric Lawson is going to be getting double-teamed on nearly every touch. Making matters even worse, Marcus Garrett (ankle) is ‘doubtful’ vs. Oklahoma State. KU will host the Cowboys at noon Eastern on ESPN.

-- Auburn’s Jared Harper (ankle) has been upgraded from ‘questionable’ to ‘probable’ for Saturday’s SEC showdown at LSU. Bruce Pearl’s team has struggled mightily on the road, going 1-4 both SU and ATS in five road assignments. LSU is 11-1 SU and 5-7 ATS at home. Auburn has had an extra day of prep time after dropping Florida 76-62 an eight-point home favorite Tuesday. Meanwhile, LSU responded to its first loss in SEC play at home to Arkansas on Saturday by going into Starkville and winning in overtime Wednesday behind Herculean efforts from Tremont Waters and Naz Reid. Offshore books opened LSU at -1.5 late Friday afternoon, but I believe that number will be higher in a few hours (and on Saturday morning, obviously).

-- Florida is winless and 1-6 ATS in seven games as an underdog this year. Mike White’s team is also mired in a 0-5 ATS slump. Although UF is 12-10, it’s still in the hunt for an at-large berth but must start picking up some key wins. This is obviously a great opportunity Saturday at top-ranked Tennessee, which opened offshore as an 11-point home favorite. This is the richest ‘dog spot of the season for Florida for the second straight game.

-- Alabama, currently on the good/right side of the bubble according to most bracketology gurus, can’t afford a bad loss at Vanderbilt. The Crimson Tide opened -2 at offshore books. Vandy remains winless in SEC play and is an abysmal 4-9 ATS in its past 13 games. The ‘over’ is 4-1 for the Commodores in their last five contests. The ‘over’ is 14-7 overall for ‘Bama, but the ‘under’ is 4-3 in its road games and has cashed at a 5-2 rate in its past seven outings. The total was 143.5 points on the send-out.

-- As I’ve noted multiple times over the last week and change, Nebraska is at the top of my Fade List right now. The Cornhuskers, who are mired in a 0-6 slump both SU and ATS and have looked awful since losing Isaac Copeland to season-ending ACL tear, opened as 10-point underdogs at Purdue.

-- Troy’s Jordon Varnado (indeed, the younger brother of former Mississippi State shot-blocking king Jarvis) is ‘questionable’ against Arkansas State. Varnado averages 21.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 blocked shots per game.

          • Guy's big shots finish No. 4 Virginia's rally over No. 8 UNC
            February 11, 2019
            By The Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) Kyle Guy scored 20 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes, to help No. 4 Virginia beat No. 8 North Carolina 69-61 on Monday night.

De'Andre Hunter also had 20 points for the Cavaliers (21-2, 9-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who played with veteran poise down the stretch after trailing for a good chunk of the second half.

The Cavaliers were coming off a second loss this season to No. 2 Duke and arrived in Chapel Hill facing the prospect of their first losing streak of any kind in two years. Yet Guy and his teammates rallied from seven down in the final eight minutes to snap UNC's seven-game winning streak.

                Quote of the Day

                Monday’s quiz

                **************************

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                13) Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray chose football over baseball Monday, ending speculation as to whether he would show up at Oakland’s training camp later this week.

Murray forfeits the vast majority of his $4.66M signing bonus from the A’s, but he’ll make a lot more than that when he gets picked in the first round of the NFL Draft. Read Monday that Murray winds up earning $210,000 from the A’s, for pretty much doing nothing.

The 58th overall pick in last year’s NFL draft got a contract worth $4.86M, so as long as Murray is picked higher than 58th (which he will be), he makes money on this deal.

Meanwhile, A’s had the 9th pick in the MLB draft LY and totally wasted it. No bueno. They do retain Murray’s baseball rights, but those are basically worthless now.

                12) With Hall of Fame baseball player Frank Robinson passing away this past week, there were pictures of him posted on the Interweb; one of them was when he was managing the Nationals, in 2005 or 2006. He is leaning against the front rail of the dugout.

You look right behind the dugout and you can see the fans in the front row; one of the fans is Brett Kavanaugh, the Supreme Court judge who was under scrutiny last year for how much money he spent back then on tickets to Nationals’ games. Pretty sweet seats he had.

                11) Cincinnati Bengals’ new offensive coordinator is Brian Callahan, whose father Bill coached the Oakland Raiders for a while; the Bengals’ new head coach is Zac Taylor, who played QB for Bill Callahan at Nebraska.

                10) Weird stat: Duke hasn’t won or shared the ACC regular season title since 2010; they haven’t won it by themselves since 2006.

                9) Tennessee is 22-1 and ranked #1 in country, even though none of their players were top 100 recruits nationally coming out of high school.

                8) Indians’ SS Francisco Lindor has a right calf strain that will keep him sidelined from 7-9 weeks, which makes him doubtful to start the regular season.

                7) From Tyler Bischoff:

UNLV’s basketball team has never had a defense finish outside the top 200 in kenpom.com‘s defensive efficiency rating. This goes back to 2002.

With seven games left this season, Rebels are ranked #238 in defensive efficiency, which helps explain their 12-11 record. Losing their best player Shakur Juiston for the season was a back-breaker.

                6) Once you watch an AAF game on TV and you hear the replay official as he gives his verdict to the referee, it is obvious that the NFL has to do this next year, just to give transparency to the replay process. Makes the broadcast more interesting.

                5) Three of eight AAF teams ran 70+ plays in Week 1; NFL teams rarely run 70 plays in a game, so it looks like the shorter play clock will result in more action during their games.

                4) New Orleans Saints hired Darren Rizzi as special teams coordinator; he spent the last eight years as Miami’s special teams coach.

                3) Los Angeles Rams hired Wes Phillips as their new TE’s coach; he worked with Sean McVay in Washington and is the son of Rams’ DC Wade Phillips.

                2) When the Texas Longhorns were recruiting Patrick Mahomes, they recruited him as a DB, not a quarterback, which makes you question what the hell were they thinking about? How many QB’s in the NFL right now played at Texas?

                1) It snowed in Las Vegas Sunday night; that doesn’t happen much. There was a video on Twitter of a guy driving around Las Vegas, with the traffic lights and street lights both out, but all the casinos were lit up like usual. Was a little eerie, though.

                          **Louisiana State at Kentucky**

-- A crucial conference battle will go down night at Rupp Arena. Kentucky (20-3 straight up, 14-9 against the spread) will play host to LSU in a showdown of 9-1 teams who are looking to keep pace with 10-0 Tennessee at the top of the SEC standings. As of early this morning, most books had Kentucky installed as an 8.5-point favorite after most books opened the Wildcats at nine. The total was 149 and LSU was +350 on the money line.

-- Since losing at Alabama in its SEC opener, John Calipari’s team has won 10 consecutive games and has covered the number in eight straight. Kentucky went into Starkville on Saturday and won by a 71-67 count as a 3.5-point road favorite. UK led 40-25 at intermission, only to see that deficit cut to two by the eight-minute mark. But the Wildcats promptly went on a 12-4 run to extend the lead back to 10 and held off a late charge from the Bulldogs. P.J. Washington was the catalyst with 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field. Washington had game-high scoring honors despite fouling out after playing for only 24 minutes. Keldon Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Tyler Herro finished with 12 points.

-- UK is undefeated in 13 home games with a 7-6 spread record. The ‘Cats get four of their next five games at home, including a trip to Lexington from top-ranked Tennessee this Saturday. Does that qualify the ‘Cats for a letdown scenario tonight? We shall see.

-- Kentucky is 2-0 ATS in a pair of games as a single-digit favorite.

-- UK is No. 7 at KenPom.com, compiling a 7-2 record against K-Pom Top-50 opponents. The other L’s for the Wildcats have come against Duke (118-84) and Seton Hall (84-83 in overtime) on neutral courts. They have quality home wins over Kansas and Mississippi St., in addition to road scalps at MSU, at Florida, at Auburn and at Louisville. UK also has a neutral-court victory over North Carolina.

-- Washington leads UK in scoring (14.2 points per game), rebounding (8.1 RPG) and 3-point accuracy (44.9%). Johnson is averaging 14.0 points and 5.3 RPG while hitting 40.5 percent of his 3-pointers. Herro (13.3 PPG) is draining 91.8 percent of his free-throw attempts, while Stanford grad transfer Reid Travis is averaging 11.7 points and 7.0 RPG.

-- LSU (19-4 SU, 13-9 ATS) owns a 5-1 record both SU and ATS in six road assignments. The Tigers are 3-1-1 ATS with three outright win in five games as underdogs.

-- Will Wade’s club has won 12 of its past 13 games while going 10-3 ATS. The only loss during this span came two Saturday’s ago in Baton Rouge, where Arkansas came in and pulled a 90-89 upset as a 10-point road underdog. LSU bounced back nicely last week, however, winning 92-88 in overtime at Mississippi St. on Wednesday as a three-point underdog. Then on Saturday, the Tigers held off Auburn 83-78 as 2.5-point home ‘chalk.’

-- Naz Reid scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win over the Bulldogs at The Hump in Starkville. Tremont Waters produced 26 points, five steals, five assists and four rebounds. Skylar Mays led the way Saturday against Auburn, scoring a team-high 20 points to go with three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists without a turnover. Waters finished with 19 points, three steals, three boards and 10 assists compared to two turnovers. Reid added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

-- Waters, a sophomore point guard, isn’t as prolific a scorer as LSU legend Chris Jackson, but he can get buckets in bunches and is a better distributor. Waters is averaging team-highs in scoring (15.7 points per game), assists (6.1 APG) and steals (3.0 SPG). He ranks tops in the SEC and third in the nation in steals and is third in the SEC in assists.

-- Reid, the 5-star freshman out of New Jersey, has been ‘as advertised.’ He is currently listed as the No. 26 overall picks in the latest 2019 mock draft at NBADraft.net. The 6’10” 250-pounder is averaging 13.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shots per game. Mays is scoring at a 13.4 PPG clip, is second on the team in steals with 47 and has a 52/30 assist-to-turnover ratio.

-- LSU is No. 21 at K-Pom, producing a 5-2 record against Top-50 foes. The Tigers are 11-4 versus the Top 100. They’ve lost at Houston and on a neutral court vs. FSU (in OT) and vs. Oklahoma St. LSU’s best wins have come at Misissippi St., at Ole Miss, at Arkansas, vs. Saint Mary’s (neutral court), vs. Auburn, vs. Alabama and vs. Furman.

-- The ‘under’ is on a 7-2 run for the ‘Cats to improve to 14-9 overall and 9-4 in their home games.

-- The ‘over’ is on an 11-3 roll for LSU to improve to 14-8 overall and 4-2 in its road assignments.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- As of early this morning, most books had Duke (21-2 SU, 15-8 ATS) listed as an eight-point favorites with a total of 151.5. U of L was +280 to win outright (risk $100 to win $280).

-- Duke is atop the ACC standings with a 9-1 record in league play. The Blue Devils lead UNC and Virginia bye one-half game, while Louisville and Syracuse are 1.5 games back with 8-3 ACC ledgers.

Reddish also had three assists, three steals, two blocked shots and two rebounds, while Tre Jones contributed 13 points, seven assists, six boards and two steals.

-- Since dropping a home game to Syracuse in overtime, Duke has won seven games in a row and it has covered in four straight contests. The Blue Devils are No. 1 at K-Pom, going 8-2 versus Top 50 foes. Their only other loss of the year came against Gonzaga in finals of the Maui Classic out in Hawaii. Duke’s best wins have come at Virginia, at FSU (on a Reddish buzzer beater) and vs. Kentucky, Texas Tech and Auburn on neutral floors. -- Chris Mack had done a remarkable job in his first season as head coach at U of L. He re-tooled the roster with several impact transfers and has seen sophomore Jordan Nwora make a big leap in his sophomore campaign. Nwora averages team-highs in scoring (17.6 PPG) and rebounding (7.6 RPG). Dwayne Sutton is averaging 11.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game, while Samford transfer Christen Cunningham (10.7 PPG) has a 108/42 assist-to-turnover ratio and has hit 39.3 percent of his 3-balls. He’s hit 37.9 percent from beyond the arc and made 94.4 percent of his FTAs.

-- Louisville has dropped two of its past three games both SU and ATS, including an 80-75 overtime loss Saturday at FSU as a three-point underdog. U of L led by as many as eight in the first half, by six at halftime and by 10 with less than 10 minutes remaining. However, the Seminoles forced the extra session with a late rally and then put the clamps on the Cardinals defensively in the first three-plus minutes of OT. Cunningham scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists in the losing effort. Sutton added 14 points, six boards and four assists, making 4-of-7 attempts from 3-point territory. Nwora had 13 points and five boards.

-- Louisville is ranked No. 13 at K-Pom, producing a 5-6 record against the Top 50 and a 9-7 mark versus the Top 100. The Cardinals own wins at Va. Tech, at North Carolina and at Seton Hall, in addition to home victories over Pitt, N.C. St., Miami, Michigan St., Vermont and Lipscomb.

-- When these teams met last season in Durham, Duke coasted to an 82-56 win as a 10.5-point home ‘chalk’.

-- Totals have been an overall was for the Cards (12-12-2) with the ‘over’ going 8-6 in their home outings.

-- The ‘under’ is 15-6-2 overall for the Blue Devils, 3-1-1 in its their road assignments.

-- Anthony Edwards committed to Georgia over Kentucky on Monday morning. This is a huge recruiting coup for Tom Crean and the Bulldogs. NBADraft.net’s latest 2020 mock has Edwards listed as the No. 1 overall pick.

-- West Virginia’s nightmare campaign got even worse on Monday when Bob Huggins dismissed a pair of starters, Esa Ahmad and Wesley Harris, from the program “for a violation of athletic department policies.” The Mountaineers, who are 10-14, have already been playing without their best player, Sagaba Konate, since early Decembrer. Konate was averaging 13.6 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots per game in the team’s first eight contests. Ahmad was averaging 12.0 points and 5.8 RPG, while Harris was averaging 7.9 points and 4.5 RPG.

-- Wisconsin will host Michigan St. on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. Eastern tonight. As of early this morning, most spots had this game as a pick ‘em with the total in the 131-132 range. The Badgers are 9-2 SU and 6-5 ATS at home, while the Spartans are 6-3 both SU and ATS in nine road assignments. Wisconsin had its six-game winning streak both SU and ATS snapped in Saturday’s 61-52 loss at Michigan. The Spartans snapped their three-game losing streak both SU and ATS with Saturday’s 79-55 win over Minnesota as 13.5-point home ‘chalk.’ The ‘under’ is on a 7-2 run for Tom Izzo’s squad. The ‘under’ has cashed at a 7-1 clip for the Badgers in their past eight contests.

-- Bettors should take note of tonight’s early 6:30 p.m. Eastern tip on the Big Ten Network between Maryland and Purdue in College Park. As of early this morning, the Boilermakers were one-point road favorites with the total at 141. The Terrapins are 12-2 SU and 5-8 ATS at home, while Purdue is 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS on the road. • TOP 25 THIS WEEK: Big matchups abound in SEC, Big Ten
                            February 12, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) It's going to be a big week for the top teams in both the Southeastern and Big Ten conferences.

Eight of the nine ranked teams in the SEC and Big Ten have at least one matchup against a ranked league mate in the week ahead. The list includes top-ranked Tennessee's trip to fifth-ranked Kentucky on Saturday, which is the headlining game on this week's AP Top 25schedule filled with measuring-stick matchups for those conferences' top teams.

''The next two, you have games that are Elite Eight games, Final Four games,'' said Kentucky coach John Calipari, whose surging Wildcats face against No. 19 LSU on Tuesday before hosting the Volunteers. ''That is where we are playing now. Let's see where we are.''

Tennessee (22-1, 10-0 SEC) has spent four straight weeks at No. 1 and hasn't lost since Nov. 23, rolling to a school-record 18 straight wins in a streak that also stands as the longest of Rick Barnes' head coaching career. The Vols host South Carolina (12-11, 7-3) on Wednesday before Saturday's trip to Rupp Arena.

Kentucky (20-3, 9-1) has won 10 straight games entering the matchup with LSU, while the Tigers (19-4, 9-1) have won 12 of 13.

As for the Big Ten, the league has three ranked matchups this week.

On Tuesday, No. 11 Michigan State (19-5, 10-3) visits No. 20 Wisconsin (17-7, 9-4) while No. 12 Purdue (17-6, 10-2) travels to No. 24 Maryland (18-6, 9-4). Then the Terrapins get another challenge when they visit sixth-ranked and league-leading Michigan (22-2, 11-2) on Saturday.

By Sunday, those leagues could have some significant movement atop the standings.

                            ACC DEVELOPMENTS

Second-ranked Duke now sits alone atop the Atlantic Coast Conference after an eventful few days entering Tuesday's trip to No. 16 Louisville.

That's because the Blue Devils beat No. 4 Virginia on the road Saturday night to secure a season sweep, then the Cavaliers regrouped to stop No. 8 North Carolina's seven-game win streak Monday night. That win allowed Virginia to avoid its first losing streak of any kind in two years as they host Notre Dame on Saturday.

''I think our guys just understood that it was going to take a high-level performance to come away with it,'' Cavaliers coach Tony Bennett said. ''They were ready and they were locked in. I liked how they responded.''

As for the Tar Heels, they had been tied with Duke with its first 9-1 ACC start under Roy Williams before the loss. They were already without sophomore reserve big man Sterling Manley and freshman reserve Leaky Black for the Virginia game, and now head to Wake Forest on Saturday with two new injuries to monitor: freshman Nassir Little left early Monday after rolling his right ankle, while No. 2 scorer Cameron Johnson (15.8 points) missed key minutes late after rolling his left ankle.

''You can't let one game dictate the ones that are to come,'' Johnson said of regrouping from UNC's first loss in nearly a month.

                            IN THE BIG 12

The Big 12 has one matchup between ranked teams this week: No. 23 Iowa State at No. 18 Kansas State on Saturday.

The Wildcats (18-5, 8-2) are alone atop the Big 12 with a chance to snap Kansas' 14-season run of winning at least a share of the Big 12's regular-season title. They have won eight of nine games entering Tuesday's trip to Texas.

The game will pair an Iowa State attack that ranks 14th nationally in KenPom's adjusted offensive efficiency (117.1 points per 100 possessions) against a defense that ranks sixth in KenPom's adjusted defensive efficiency (88.2).

                            WATCH LIST

Cincinnati (20-4, 9-2 American Athletic Conference) fell out of Monday's latest poll from No. 25 after a loss to league-leading and ninth-ranked Houston. The Bearcats are the leading vote-getters among unranked teams and could climb back in by beating Wichita State at home Sunday.

Auburn (16-7, 5-5 SEC) peaked at No. 7 in December but has lost four of seven games entering Wednesday's visit from Mississippi, which spent two weeks in the AP Top 25 last month.

Wofford (21-4, 13-0 Southern Conference) hasn't lost since mid-December and can all but wrap up the league's regular-season crown by beating VMI on Thursday, then UNC Greensboro (22-3, 11-1) on Saturday.
